This is a really fun place. We came in for drinks and a bite. We got the teriyaki dumplings and they were fantastic. The staff is really friendly and take very good care of you. I did not look up the restaurant's website before we visited; we saw it while walking down the street and decided to stop in. I was not aware they added a 20% living wage charge to all checks. I am not opposed to the policy, I was just surprised. I may have missed it on the menu, but I believe it should be posted everywhere conspicuously; especially considering how unique the policy is in the hospitality industry. read more

I admit, I'm a fan. This place is the bees knees, man. No seriously- they do an excellent Bees Knees cocktail which is like the best thing you can ever have on a chilly Hudson day. This is a money making operation to be sure. But I was really enjoying the staff bip-and-bop to the pop classics that permeated the entire space- maybe a tad bit too loudly. The only detail I have to add is this: Backbar is awesome, and if you wrote a bad (or even middling-lets be real) review, you're just one of those people who goes on Yelp with an axe to grind rather than actually inform people and their choices. The staff respond well to really hectic crowds and just want you to have a good time. The owner walks around and checks in on everyone and is HEAVILY invested in your enjoyment. We had an amazing dinner at Backbar this evening! The restaurant gave kind of bohemian vibes and the service was amazing. Everyone was SO friendly and accommodating. We brought our dog because we saw it was dog friendly online. Fully intending to have to sit outside we were pleasantly surprised when they said we could sit outside or anywhere we wanted inside. There were plenty of other dogs inside too and we just loved the vibe of it. The food was so different and good! We got the cumin spiced tots, fried lemongrass chicken dumplings, pork belly bao buns, and dan dan noodles. Everything was delicious and came out very quickly. We tried the pineapple cider and kolsch which we also enjoyed. My only complaint about this place is that they are priceyyyyy. I was surprised by how much some of the stuff cost, but the quality was spot on. I hope to come back again and definitely recommend it if you are in the area! read more

A few years ago this place was exciting and alive, but the new management has really turned it in the wrong direction. I came here for lunch with a couple friends while spending the day in Hudson and we really enjoyed it! They have vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options which are all clearly labeled on the menu. We were able to find plenty of vegan options even though the menu isn't huge and really liked everything we ordered, especially the spiced tater tots! Was quite a surprise to find out that this was an Asian fusion restaurant because the name doesn't give that away at all ha! Came here the first day in town and the outdoor area is fantastic with an area to play corn hole if that's your thing. Ordered several things off the menu including: fried chicken, taro cake skewers, and the cucumber, which were all great. Everyone who works here is quite nice, much friendlier than most servers in New York but it seems like they don't know how to deal with volume adequately, running into some bottlenecks there. read more

I love a good restaurant bar with a smoker, tons of outdoor "beer garden style" seating and funky design. So from a design and ambiance standpoint, this is a 5 start spot. The food and pricing was disappointing. I thought I paid $16 for Dan Dan noodles but after taxes, tip and a $3 living wage fee, it came out to $22.5. At the end of the day, I don't think the customer should be forced to tip 40% and take all of the burden to help the servers, especially when I just did take out. Part of that should be assumed by the owner. Furthermore, they should be upfront about it rather than adding it on at the end. The amount of food I got for that price was really small. The flavor was solid, yet lacked an umami punch that I would hope for with such noodles. I found myself looking for soy sauce to fill the void. read more

Despite its convivial and lovely outdoor garden, dinner here was an epic disappointment. We ordered and paid for food with the cashier and then sat down and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. After 40 minutes of waiting, I went back to the cashier and asked about the food. With an apathetic shrug, she agreed to go into the kitchen, and made it clear that it wasn't going to affect anything and that she really didn't care. All the tables around us were going through the same thing. Finally, 10 minutes later, the remarkably bland and sad food arrived. Had we not been starving and hangry, we would not have eaten it. Hmmm, maybe the whole wait was a ploy to make the food pass as decent? It hurt that we paid for this unpleasant experience. We felt terrible for the kind waiters who were thrown onto the front lines to deal with the irritated customers and doing their best to make up for the back of the house failures. I almost never write reviews, but this experience was so egregiously bad, I just felt compelled. The garden is nice. So, I would go there for just a beer (but not a cocktail. I met the chef here in Saturday and he convinced me to have the Char Siu Ribs, Chicken & Lemongrass Dumplings, and the Dan Dan noodles with Chili Crisp. THESE are the BEST Char Siu ribs that I have had. Very tender, with a crispy crust that macks of Sichuan peppercorns and authentic flavor. The dumplings were perfectly steamed and have a marvelous flavor and texture, The house-made Chili Crisp is authentic and an homage to his Hawaiian/Chinese upbringing. The ribs are the best that I have EVER had in the state of NY. The draft beer system leaves a little bit to be desired and the beer is tad bit flat, but it paired well with the not-too-spicy food! read more

Great location in Hudson for this funky space. Right off the main drag (Warren Street) there is outdoor space both in front (nice but exposed) and in the back (much nicer and dog-friendly). As many have stated the vibe is chill and welcoming. Interesting menu with well made food and a diverse beer and cocktail menu. Service was solid though a bit disjointed - a common ailment for restaurants post-COVID. Yes the food and drinks are pricey, but that's not unexpected for the "Brooklyn of the Hudson Valley". Uninspiring food with a heaping serving of social justice for desert! What a disappointing experience. We stumbled across Backbar a few years ago and really enjoyed it then - unique space, creative menu, excellent presentation and friendly staff. This visit leaves us to likely not return. Rather boring menu now and bland preparation over-seasoned with heat to the point that you can't taste anything. None of the dishes we ordered were anything beyond mediocre. Most disappointing though is the virtue signaling "living wage fee" that's added to the bill. A flat 20% assessment that is explained on the menu as not meant to replace a gratuity but is meant to supplement wages. If you think your staff deserves to be paid more then raise their wages and then raise your prices accordingly. Afraid your menu will look too pricey and that might deter business? You could still fulfill your social justice agenda by explaining on the menu that your prices are higher than the surrounding market because you believe your entry-level staff deserve to be paid more than they could get anywhere else. But at least you'd have shown some courage in your mission. Based on what we were served your food isn't worth 20% more than the prices shown. And while our server was pleasant and attentive enough, the service didn't merit reward beyond the relatively standard 20%. So yes, your "living wage fee" was the gratuity and your staff will now see less of it as you've forced it through taxation. I'd have much preferred to tip in cash and let them sort out their own accounting. Find the inspiration in your food that wowed us on our previous visit and abandon the obnoxious pricing structure and maybe we'll be back. Otherwise there are plenty of other restaurants where we'll be happy to tip generously and reward staff for their efforts. read more

Very odd experience. The blonde female bartender enjoyed ridiculing me for asking an allergen question about the menu. Apparently this bar is going outta there way to be the edgy place in town - while I'm just trying to avoid an allergy attack lol. If the fried rice really is GF, then mark it as such (soy sauce / tamari often has wheat) and don't make your patrons feel like crap for asking what should be a routine question. Finding lunch in Hudson on a Sunday is not the easiest, particularly if you've over shopped and lost track of time. (Most of the few places open for lunch close at 3 and reopen at 5.) Since we had done exactly this, we wandered into an unassuming but quirky spot that shares a building with an eccentric antiques joint. Backbar is an old garage converted into an indoor/ outdoor bar. Decorated inside with eclectic antiques and a wood stove and outside with lovely umbrella covered tables and flowers, we found the space to be relaxing and cheerful. The menu is an Asian (Indonesian) inspired one with an obvious small plates section and a slightly heartier noodles section. For the three of us, we ordered the vegan noodles, the pork noodles (both out of this world), the lamb dumplings (spicy and mind blowing), the tiger salad and the eggplant dip. All were very good, but the meat dishes really stood out- which is saying a lot coming from a infrequent meat eater. The amount of food was perfect. We were full but not stuffed and our bill with two delicious cocktails a piece came to about $120. The service was friendly and efficient, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was super comfortable and hip. I look forward to another visit. read more

Our favorite bar in the state of New York! Wish we had this back in Brooklyn. The food here is so on point and the vibes are always great. The staff is wonderful and everyone who comes here just seems like they're in a great mood- probably bc of the delicious slushees chalk full-o-booze. Came here for probably our 10th visit over the years a few nights ago. Got some dumplings, the shrimp & crispy rice & the smoked ribs. Came here on a Friday night at 6pm. We wanted to try karage chicken sando, ube ice cream, and pandan Pana cotta. All were sold out which seemed strange at 6pm.. We ended up getting the chicken lemon grass dumplings (solid but not much flavor) and pork belly bao (solid - it's what you expect). My partner got a pineapple cider which he thought was good. Overall solid drinks (from what we can tell on the menu) and vibes. Food could be better and maybe not run out so early. Service was good but took awhile. Stopped here on a whim and what a hit. Hidden place but large once you get in. Outside drinks and eating. The appetiser was amazing and the waiter knew everything he should have to make it enjoyable. The dumplings, the roti - eat it all! But as good as good as the food and atmosphere is here, there is nothing like being greeted like you're a part of the family when you walk into a restaurant; no matter if you're a local or visiting from out of town, the backbar team have your back! The staff are always one step ahead of you in terms of service, dog bowl for dog when they see him pant, top up of drink when you're empty. The food was good, the audience was fun, and any bar where the owner closes the kitchen so his staff can watch and participate in democracy is one that I will support (and review!) Eggplant Tiger Salad - I'd skip this, the eggplant was non existent so it was basically a salad Crispy Tofu Rice Bowl - Fine. The tofu doesn't need the breading and deep frying in my opinion.
