We tried the nachos and a few sandwiches, and everything was really solid. The chopped brisket sandwich was my top pick--super moist brisket with just the right texture and flavor for a great BBQ bite. Their potato salad was good too--smooth, creamy, and way better than most. The BBQ sauce deserves a shoutout--smoky with a little sweetness, and it worked perfectly with everything we tried. If you're in the area and looking for some good BBQ and a cool place to relax, definitely check this place out. Super friendly service too!

El Monte was the 82nd smokehouse on my quest to visit as many BBQ restaurants on the planet before…read moreI cross over. Here are a few thoughts from a self-proclaimed BBQ snob:) First off, El Monte is an absolute dive! You can very easily pass by and not give it a second look. But then again, many of the really good smokehouses are. My fiancee and I are new to San Antonio and like trying new BBQ places. We picked El Monte at random after our initial choice turned out to be closed. I ordered a 2-meat platter with brisket and sausage, which is my "go to" meal when trying out any new smokehouse. IMHO, those two meats...and their sides...tell you a lot about a BBQ joint. My fiancee ordered the brisket sandwich. The sausage was a slightly charred but still good, although nothing to write home about. The Barracho beans were pretty good, but not my style. Nor do I like rice with BBQ. Just to be clear...I like Mexican food, I like Tex Mex and I like BBQ. But I don't necessarily like them combined; it's a matter of personal taste for me. The potato salad was okay, but again, nothing to write home about. My fiance had the brisket sandwich and thought it was awesome. For starters, it was HUGE! In addition to the brisket, it had white cheese, pico and guacamole. She offered me a bite, but I was too occupied with my own plate. So, what was good? The brisket was freaking AWESOME!!! It was some of the best I've had. Great flavor and extremely tender. It literally crumbles on your fork and melts in your mouth. Not sure what was in their BBQ sauce, but it complements the brisket extremely well. Nothing else on my plate was bad at all, the brisket just blew everything out of the water. I would go back just for the brisket alone. If you stop by El Monte without trying it, you're selling yourself short. I've never given a 5-Star review based solely on the brisket, so this is first for me.

I looked over the menu & even mentioned to the lady that it's my 1st time here....She said take your time as I looked at the menu, asked a few questions & went with the Wings & Waffle Combo plus Drink for $19.99 plus tax.....I had #22 tag & tried sitting at the counter but I was almost suffocating myself, so I decided to eat outside with the little outdoor seating tables. I told the guy behind counter that I'd be outside, so whenever the Waffle was done to bring it out. Well, it never came & I ate the 6 wings that I had. I was expecting to be blown outta my mind with flavors or tastes that I haven't had for awhile, but Nopeeee it was just some average wings & NOTHING Special. I came back inside to enquire about my Waffle & the young Man from the kitchen came out to tell me that there was an issue with the Waffle & it came out soupy. So I said alrighty then, what ya gonna do for me then? He said they'd give me some more Wings, I said sure, that would do & I really appreciate the kindness & follow through. When they finally told me that the wings we're ready, they must fixed the Waffle maker & gave me a Waffle too. Again, I was thankful & pleased until I took this order TOGO. I attempted to eat the Waffle dry, No Syrup or anything?? Then I took out my receipt & I Immediately was Shocked & Pissed Off The machine I used to checkout had a spot for tips or custom tip, I made the purchase for $19.99 plus tax & tip of $3.00 dollars ~ but when I looked at my sales receipt it showed a 30.00 Tip I said Hellll Nawwww, I called back this location & no answer but I left a vmail about this situation & scenario ~ No One Returned My Call ‼ So NOT Only was this Food OverPriced but also OverRated & scammed Me of an extra $27 Bucks Needless to say, I'm contesting this transaction with My Chase Bank & will get my monies back momentarily ~ But I'm Never-Ever gonna come back or try anything from this Establishment again‼ As far as Me, Myself & I goes....as a Former Chicagoan from the Southside, I've had plenty of Real Soul Food & My Tastebuds have sampled countless delicacies from around America & the Globe I typically don't like to leave "Bad Reviews" but after waiting until today for someone to correct or respond to Me, I felt compelled to explain my outburst & remarks. The turkey is always flavorful and juicy and just the right portion for a satisfying lunch. The BBQ sauce that comes with it has the perfect amount of spice, and the pinto beans have a nice smoky BBQ flavor that pairs really well with the meal. Today I decided to add a couple of extra sides and tried the creamed corn and the green beans. The creamed corn is probably one of the best I've ever had because it's super creamy, cheesy, and full of flavor. The green beans are cooked with pieces of bacon and are very well seasoned. They were good, though not my personal favorite compared to the other sides.

The mac and cheese was awesome, and my loaded baked potato was enormous. For the prices, this place is extremely reasonable and lunch (which left most of us with enough food for dinner) came out to less than $10/person. I love the down home, rustic feel of the truck and being able to watch them make all the food. They kept great music going the whole time, and overall, just a great food truck vibe and a welcome break from the work day!

So my wife and I are in San Antonio for a few months and we decided to visit all the Yelp places in San Antonio that made the top 100 for Texas. There are seven of them, and Nelson's BBQ (#21) was the last one on the list for us. I call on Saturday after I get off of work to just ask him if he's still got food left and I find out that his hours are kind of non-standard. He typically takes orders and gets food ready as the orders come in but he's not at his food truck all the time. That was a little bit different for me but he was very accommodating and willing to make his schedule work with mine and get our order done as soon as he could. It did take about 2.5 weeks until it finally worked out but the food was delicious. The timing and communication could've been a little bit better but Mr. Nelson was working hard and really trying to get as much done as possible. Needless to say, the food was delicious. We tried the nasty Nate (our favorite), the Mac n cheese which was delicious, pulled pork (very good), sausage (thought it was going to be a little better), ribs (good), cornbread (very good). The best dish was the nasty Nate and the cornbread but the sausage was disappointing. Still, overall 5 stars for the meal. The wait was a little excessive I thought but I definitely recommend checking his place out if it works out for you because the food was really good! Overall: 4.5 stars
