El Monte was the 82nd smokehouse on my quest to visit as many BBQ restaurants on the planet before I cross over. Here are a few thoughts from a self-proclaimed BBQ snob:) First off, El Monte is an absolute dive! You can very easily pass by and not give it a second look. But then again, many of the really good smokehouses are. My fiancee and I are new to San Antonio and like trying new BBQ places. We picked El Monte at random after our initial choice turned out to be closed. I ordered a 2-meat platter with brisket and sausage, which is my "go to" meal when trying out any new smokehouse. IMHO, those two meats...and their sides...tell you a lot about a BBQ joint. My fiancee ordered the brisket sandwich. The sausage was a slightly charred but still good, although nothing to write home about. The Barracho beans were pretty good, but not my style. Nor do I like rice with BBQ. Just to be clear...I like Mexican food, I like Tex Mex and I like BBQ. But I don't necessarily like them combined; it's a matter of personal taste for me. The potato salad was okay, but again, nothing to write home about. My fiance had the brisket sandwich and thought it was awesome. For starters, it was HUGE! In addition to the brisket, it had white cheese, pico and guacamole. She offered me a bite, but I was too occupied with my own plate. So, what was good? The brisket was freaking AWESOME!!! It was some of the best I've had. Great flavor and extremely tender. It literally crumbles on your fork and melts in your mouth. Not sure what was in their BBQ sauce, but it complements the brisket extremely well. Nothing else on my plate was bad at all, the brisket just blew everything out of the water. There is nothing special about this place which now a days makes it special? Really, this BBQ has a target audience. It's old man barbecue and it does it the best. The sausage is a standard peppered sausage that is peppered forward. The brisket is peppery as well and doesn't have a lot of give but has some. The ribs are their best thing and could probably compete with new age ribs. Their charro beans are okay but their cream corn is really good! This place is what Rudy's BBQ franchise is trying to be. The customer service is great. I would give this a four however the price range seems to mimic a new age barbecue when this place is what minimum barbecue place should try to be. In fact, I had to use there BBQ sauce which is vinegar forward and I appreciate that. However, you know barbecue should never be put on brisket here in Texas but if you are a old man, you don't care about that lol it's a small place but they do have seating in the back. Continuing my effort to try out the best bbq spots in town led me to this place. I've been meaning to visit this place due to its close proximity to my home but never got around to it. The interior is pretty small with a couple of tables set up. There is also outdoor seating. However, I took my order to go. The gent working the counter was friendly. There was a second person working in the back putting the orders together. I decided on the two meat plate. I chose brisket and turkey for my mains. I also added a sausage for a few dollars more. For my sides, I went with potato salad and the rice/beans combo. The final piece was the pan de campo. I had never tried this bread before, so I was looking forward to it. There was a side tray adjacent to the counter which contained pickled serrano peppers, pickles, onions. They also had BBQ sauce, only one option though. After a brief wait my order was ready. After a short drive home, I was ready to dig in. The brisket and turkey were both delicious. I was a little unimpressed by the sides. They were good but I think they could have been better. The pan de campo was great, especially with butter and honey. I really liked the price point for this spot. It was less costly than other spots I have visited. I will definitely be back. The food was very bland, and for the price I paid we received VERY little food. I ordered the 3 taco plate- which comes with a sausage wrap, brisket taco, and pulled pork taco. I asked to change the sausage wrap for a brisket taco, and I was charged an extra $1. That was fine, I was shocked a sausage wrap was considered a "taco" on a 3 taco plate. But I was more so frustrated that the "brisket" taco had a single sliver of cut brisket on a plain stale tortilla. I used my own tortilla and bbq sauce, which luckily I had from HEB, and made a brand new taco. The sides were very salty and room temperature, not fresh and inedible. I won't return and I wouldn't recommend. we got to the restaurant at 6pm, they closed at 8pm. We thought since it wasn't even close to closing time our food should be good and fresh, we were wrong. Don't go here on a empty stomach! The brisket has a nice flavor. Juicy and tender, along with the ribs. It also has a nice layer of fat to hold in the juice and flavor. The rub gives it a little kick on the end, that's not overwhelming. After driving by this spot for some time I finally decided to try it out. I ordered a pound of turkey, brisket, two pork ribs and a side of pinto beans and potato salad as my first taste test. All the meats were tender, juicy and seasoned very well. The ribs were really good and even got a thumbs up from my mom who is not a regular rib eater. All had a nice bark and smoke ring on the outside and were juicy and tender on the inside. The potato salad is a heavy mustard based style (I like a little less mustard personally) but it was chunky and very tasty. The beans were solid paired well with the meats. With my order I got white bread, onions and jalepenos as my additional sides along with some bbq sauce. The sauce was good but is very subjective to taste so I'll let you judge for yourself. Overall, this place is great but with really good hand made food there is a premium price for this BBQ. Be sure to check the pricing before your order so you don't get sticker shock and be sure to take advantage of their specials and/or coupons. My son and I searched Google and found this close to our work. We decided it was time to give it a try. We had seen this restaurant next to the water store we visit. My son ordered the chopped beef and brisket. I ordered the turkey and brisket. Both were great. The sides were large enough and the barbecue sauce was excellent. Pickles, onion, and jalapeno at no extra charge. Someone from the restaurant came out to offer my son and me a place to eat because we used the roof of the car to munch down.
