I went here for brunch one Saturday with some friends. They were very accommodating for our big party with a few kiddos. I got the Biscuit & Gravy $11.00 which comes with 2 eggs, I ordered them over easy. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The sausage gravy had noticeable sausage pieces in it but it was very bland. I added pepper and salt to everything. This came with a side and I got the fruit cup which was almost the best part of my meal. I love this place! I love the minimalist decor, makes the restaurant look sleek and cute. I always get the Kale Cooler as my drink, so refreshing and a great alternative to high sugar juices. Unfortunately, the first day of the year was off to a rough start. Although I was seated immediately, I waited and waited for someone to take my order. After about 10-15 minutes, when she saw no food or beverage on my table, the lead waitress asked if anyone came by. Soon after, someone finally took my order. The problem was that I was seated in the section directly behind the hostess/register. A partition behind me blocked the view from the other side. Unless someone already has a reason to walk by, that person would never know I had been seated at their table. Eventually my waiter did come to take my coffee order. As for my breakfast, I ordered the Awake omelette. The kitchen must not have been too busy because my order came pretty quickly. The omelette is ideal for mushroom-lovers. Because I failed to asked for it dry, the English muffin was soaked in butter. The coffee was okay. Because of the delay in getting it, I did not drink more than a cup. M and I tried Awake for the first time this weekend and we had a great experience. Our server, Jasmine (sp?), was wonderful and she was very patient with me when I told her this was our first time. I usually choose a savory option at brunch (often veering into the lunch territory), but I was hoping for both salty and sweet, and the sweet combo works so nicely for that. I ended up going with the French Toast, ordering the two eggs over easy and the pork sausage. M ordered the Hiker's Benedict with the side of potatoes. The food came out pretty quickly, which I was grateful for. The French Toast was delightful, with a fluffy interior, and I really enjoyed the pork sausage. The eggs were exactly how I wanted, with the yolk still runny but all the whites set. I added some of the house-made hot sauce to my eggs and sausages and really liked it. M's benny was a hit as well. I tried a bite and was pleasantly surprised at how smoky the ham was. The bacon was good, although I was glad that I ordered the sausage for my dish (as much as I love bacon, I am a sucker for the breakfast sausage patties). The potatoes were probably my favorite. They didn't necessarily look that crispy but oh they were. And they were well seasoned--who wants bland potatoes? So with the delicious food and Jasmine's great service, we were happy and full and ready to go. When I got up to pay our check, I found out that another couple had paid for our food! I thought this was just something that happens in movies and on TV. The couple was already gone when I found out, so I didn't even get to thank them, but It was such a nice gesture and I can't wait to pay it forward one day. "Awake" - what a catchy name! It tells you right away what they serve. We came in a Saturday morning. There was no wait time at all. We were greeted and seated right away. We ordered a couple of breakfast items: Parisian benedicts and pancakes and eggs. It's called Parisian because it uses a croissant instead of an English muffin. The poached eggs on the Benedicts were nicely made. I particularly like the creamy mushrooms and Swiss cheese, and of course the smoky bacon. The croissant didn't disappoint. It was nice and buttery. The pancakes were whole-wheat pancake, not as eggy and chewy like regular pancakes. But you know you're getting something more wholesome and healthy. The house coffee was very smooth and well-balanced. They serve you a whole pot of coffee. We were not able to finish it all. So we asked for a to-go cup to enjoy it for the next couple of hours. We also got a kale juice, which was crisp and refreshing. We loved it! This is not a big place. But it seems like the wait staff seat people every other table. We felt quite comfortable sitting inside. If you want to have more distance, you can take one of the few tables right outside. You can also access the electronic menu via your cell phone. This is my usual location and I always order an egg Benedict and my eggs have never been over cooked!! This consistency, the brioche French toast and usually the drinks is what keeps me coming when I want a place close to home. My last visit was a tad bit disappointing because of how warm both the restaurant and my carafe of mimosas was. I didn't get a chance to tell the waitress because it was a while before she came back to check on us. The food was delish as usual although you could tell it was sitting out for a bit. My Monterey Benedict was thankfully still warm and yummy as usual. We were on a bit of a time limit so the other order of scrambled eggs that were cold weren't eaten. The brioche French toast was great as usual as well, thick, fluffy, sweet, and not to eggy. I recommend if you prefer cold mimosas you ask for champs to be cold as well not just the juice they add in- I will def make this request next time. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! I don't give 5s out lightly, but this place is deserving! We went for late brunch after Sunday church service and we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. The waiting area is a decent size, we had a party of 8 and they put tables together for us. Our server was attentive and took his time with the kids as they ordered. I had a coffee but the sell some beer and wine and mimosas so you have that option which is ni e if you want that. The ambiance was nice, soft music in the background and clean, modern lines and furniture. Now, let's talk about that damn waffle......it was something special. You see I dabble a bit in the kitchen and getting waffle to that level of cunchiness with a moist batter and enough sweet to balance the bananas and tart strawberries is an art. You can tell they spent time perfecting that batter. The fruits were super fresh....maybe let the strawberries sit in sugar water for 5 minutes, but that quibble wasn't enough o drop my score. The egged perfectly done as was sausage/hash browns, add some cholula and we are set!! I snagged a bit of my new ogres omelette and it was fluffy and savory, perfectly done. The way the restaurant tables are set up you might find yourself sitting closer to a stranger than you prefer because of the bench seating but there's other options of course!! Service was good, perfect amount of out of the way but accessible most of the time. I don't remember my servers name or I would share so you could get her good service. The host on duty when we dined there was young and a bit lacking in experience I dare say, so you might have to to get her attention. I have never had anything less than excellent service and delightful meals at Awake. Orlando is our server every time we go, and seems to be a one-man band of sorts, running the register, serving (and doing a dang good job of it, too, on time with refills, etc.), often seating, the works. We were a bit later than usual Saturday morning, arriving at about 7:30am, so there were a few other staff assisting. (NOTE: I do not mean to imply anything negative about the staff in any way; I simply want to applaud the recognizably challenging workload.) I always get the hot cocoa, which is sweet and rich (I generally add sugar to cocoa to fully enjoy it, but there is absolutely no need here) and I love the whipped cream on top. We've had waffles, pancakes, sandwiches, omelets, you name it - nothing has ever been disappointing. I'm one of those people who always has requests (crispy bacon, add cheese...) and they have accommodated all of them with a smile. I wish I'd thought to take photos, but I'm always too hungry (maybe next time). All in all, fantastic experience and highly recommended. read more

Doretta was our server today and was fantastic. Two of us had the frozen peach Bellini's. They were blended really well and had a mild flavor. I had the Awake omelette, my mom got the skillet and said it was really good, and my sister had the avocado toast. They do not have Turkey bacon or sausage in place of pork which is a bummer but I got breakfast potatoes in place of the bacon or sausage. First off our server was so kind. I just hoped he would have notified us about paying up at the front after your done eating because my group and I were un-aware since it was our first time there. Anyways I really liked the waffle! Great food and great service... Came here for Barksdale Spirit Day just to support the school and ended up finding a really great breakfast spot. It now has a new name and I believe new owners, so not sure why Yelp is showing reviews for "The Egg and I" under the new name "Awake". My previous review was for when it was called "The Egg and I". The Eggs Benedict looked so good I was jealous that I didn't order it. The scrambled eggs were like the best ever. And, my spinach salad was absolutely delicious. To take it one step higher I'd recommend using grilled chicken breast over whatever you're using now. Andy was air server and she was great because she anticipated our ever need.
