Came here on a weekend morning and they weren't terribly busy. We were meeting people who were already seated. Looked over the menu and decided to get Migas $9.99 (which sounded like chilaquiles-SPOILER ALERT they are not!) and husband got biscuit and gravy combo $11.99. It came with biscuits and gravy, 2 eggs, bacon and sausage. Portion sizes were ok. Food was pretty standard breakfast fare (similar to chain restuarants). Best thing about this place was the price. For 4 adults ordering 4 meals, 2 coffees, a tea and some sides it was $63.50. I actually laughed when I got the bill because it was so low. I always forget how inexpensive food can be in the midwest as a meal for 2 where I live can get pricey. This place is located at the end of a strip mall. Parking was easy and it did not look like they were on a wait. Would stop in again if in the area for a quick cheap meal. Oh and for anyone curious what migas were per their menu "Scrambled eggs with tortilla chips, jalapeno, tomato and onions, cheddar cheese. Served hash browns with two flour tortillas and salsa." I was surprised how bland these were. Unless I got a jalapeño there was little to no flavor to the entire thing. I was surprised it was so flavorless considering all the things in it. The first time I came here I had The Colony Skillet. I walked into the place for the first time at around 1:30 p.m. on a Sunday for my "breakfast". Keep in mind that this place closes at 2:30, so by then, there weren't that many people there anymore. The first thing I noticed about the couple tables that were there was that they seemed to be on very familiar terms with the staff. Good sign. Starving, didn't really know what to order. I had read that the coffee was good, so I knew I was going to try it. Coffee aside, I asked my server "I'm hungry, what's popular?" In my less manner-observing thoughts this roughly translated to "Feed me the best food you've got" I think she read my mind. "The Colony Skillet." she said. Now normally in small establishments such as this one, I'm always skeptical of food that's named after a city. After she explained everything that's in it (during which I didn't really take in half the things she said), I agreed to it. First came the coffee. The coffee was very decent. It wasn't an exotic brew filled with rich and aromatic flavors from the depth of Colombia, nor did it have the [insert all coffee descriptions] of [insert all foreign coffee producing places]. It was simply a good, solid, morning (afternoon, in my case) cup of joe. AND courtesy of my server, I never saw the bottom of my coffee mug. Keep them refills coming. Needless to say I was very well (read: excessively) caffeinated for the remaining afternoon. Then came the food. Delicious. Sausage, eggs, cheese, hash brown on English muffin, all topped off with a generous serving of gravy. I personally didn't think the combination of everything was too much. Both times I have been here the lunch special was Pot Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Homemade Roll, and Pecan Cobbler. Both times it was delicious and very reasonably priced. The service was very attentive and my drink was never empty. The Colony Cafe has a very good "hometown" feel that makes you want to keep coming back. I wish more placed like this existed in place of the huge chain restaurants that care nothing about the customer. I can't wait to go back. read more

Not sure how this place got such good reviews. We found this place through yelp and honestly it was terrible. The food took over 30 minutes and they were all half cold and half hot. Our group had to send back some food (I ate cold eggs and soggy hash brown). The air conditioning doesn't work too great since they have an open kitchen. The biscuits are heated up in a microwave and very chewy. The coffee was weak at best. The city of colony health department have this place a C rating (76/100) and I saw the servers touching the food without gloves. Which I don't mind. But I don't think I saw them washing their hands constantly (they handle cash, clean tables, and then plate food with their hands). Will not be returning. read more

I've been in for breakfast and lunch and I've enjoyed both experiences enough that I know I'll be back and bring people with me. The food and service were great. At lunch I asked to make some minor alterations to a couple of menu items to make them "more healthy" (guilt) and they were happy to oblige without any hassle. AND, they got it right. I find a lot of places are willing to take your order with substitutions but they don't always get it right by the time it hits the table. My breakfast order was a to-go order and the gal behind the counter made sure to include lots of condiment options to please all the people I was feeding. I appreciated hr volunteering the options rather than waiting for me to ask. I was also thankful they open at 6:30 am so I could stop by on my way to work. Overall I'm glad to see a place like this open up in The Colony. read more

Update 3/12/13- This place has become part of our Saturday mornings (and some evenings when I do not want to cook). Food and coffee are still yummy, the crowd has grown larger so there is a skoch of a wait time after 10am. Small yet cozy the food was fresh and hot. The coffee was good no sugar required no bitter taste. The music playing in the back ground was classic rock. Not overbearing but pleasant.This will be my new breakfast spot for a while. read more

From the outside you wouldn't think much of the place as it looks very generic. But since several friends had spoken about how good it was we gave it a try for the first time the weekend after Thanksgiving. The first surprise was the ambience inside. Contrary to the plain look and feel on the outside of the place, the inside is very beautiful and had an Italian bistro feel. T he second surprise was the price, the menu is full of wonderful items at very reasonable prices, slightly under IHOP actually. The third was the service, extremely accommodating and friendly. OK I decided to eat here a few times before I actually reviewed. The first time I came I had the colony combo with pancakes and a side of hash. Loved it! Pancakes were most and hot but my only complaints were that the hashbrowns lacked flavor. Just fried potatoes...no seasoning. Bummer. The next time I had an omelet with cheese and spinach added and Bacon. I cut into my omelet and it ran! Like I ordered over easy eggs inside the omelet.....grossed me out. Needless to say, I stayed with my Bacon that was nice and crispy. Left feeling very disappointed. This last time, for the sake of needing a repeat breakfast from my first encounter, I ordered my colony combo with pancakes with a side of hash. My pancakes were hot, but dry. No matter what syrup/butter combo I used, my pancakes crumble when I cut into them. Oh Well, still ate them. My hash was again bland but at least I had my trusty Bacon there to never let me down. All in all, the service is always a pleasure but the inconsistency of my food makes me not want to try it again. I still advise everyone to just give it a try. read more

I ate here with my team from work (table of 5) and we found the food to be delicious. Well made, simple food that tastes great. However, the service was disappointing and incredibly slow. We were there about 45 minutes waiting for very basic, fast-food style dishes. There seemed to be a lot of employees there but nobody interested in taking our orders or preparing our food. I do recommend trying this place out for a great meal, but make sure you have plenty of time, we nearly had to take our food to go in order to get back to work! read more

My son and I tried this place out over the weekend and we were both impressed. The coffee was quite good. The food was fresh and tasted like home cooking. We were happy that the breakfast sausage actually tasted like breakfast sausage and that the bacon was not paper thin and covered in grease like at some other places. I had the southwest omelet minus the sour cream and it was delicious. Hash browns were better than most places. The pancakes were also quite good. I think we've found our new local weekend breakfast spot. I tend to be a bot on the harsh side in my Yelp reviews, so for me to give a four star is a rarity. To anyone who has had a bad experience at The Colony Cafe, I'd say give the place another shot, maybe at a different time. And if you didn't like what you were served, try something different. This is such a cute little local place, so much character and charm. The people who work here are helpful, quick, and happy. Ever my time I come here I bow to get a breakfast item, but always end up with a turkey club or BLT! The salads are huge! Fiancé usually gets the breakfast special or the breakfast wraps. This place has great breakfast! It's not fancy, just a little hole in the wall. Their coffee is really tasty- I only add a bit of cream and doesn't even need sugar. My favorite is the Steve's skillet with hash browns. It's a lot of food! Perfect to share with my kid. Tons of flavor! Service isn't awesome here, it's more of the people in the area. That's just how they are. But if you go out of your way to be nice to people, they're nice in return. So just kill them with kindness :) read more

My husband and I love this place. We try to go at least every other weekend since we discovered it a couple months ago. It's simple food so if you're a "foodie" who wants something fancy or over the top then keep moving. The food is great, I love the Breakfast Biscuit and think about it often. :) It's a small restaurant with a "small town feel" so if you want a hostess and waiters in uniform that wait on you hand and foot...then keep moving. The staff looks like it's mostly family and friends helping out, I imagine their hours makes it hard to keep a constant staff. I love the place and wish they were open more but then I think if they were open more than we'd get sick of it. With the short hours it makes it like a once a week treat for us. read more

We went here based on 4-1/2 stars on Yelp. The food was okay. It's hard to mess up a patty melt and breakfast sandwich. The hash browns were a tad too over cooked, like it had been on the grill waiting for a bit. What knocked stars off was the service and cleanliness. The waitress was nice enough but was too busy chatting it up with the regulars that I only got one cup of coffee for nearly my entire meal. When I did finally get my second cup, it was time to pay and I noticed the other side of my cup had a lip stick stain. I wasn't wearing lipstick. Yuk! I got a dirty cup and I felt sick. I ordered the scrambler with bacon and hashbrown, it was so so. I have definitely had better. The eggs were over cooked and the hashbrown were under seasoned. Salt and pepper goes a long way.
