Food and staff is friendly relaxing and have a live jazz duo on Sundays. As a feedback, if the place is not busy, why seat all the people together? the place is huge, and as a customers we wish we were seated somewhere where we don't hear other people's conversations. Overall a good experience but with some caveats. We came in on a Saturday a few weeks ago in a group of 8. I had placed a reservation a few days before and they were able to seat us quickly. The service and the ambience was very good. Speed of the food came out very fast and they came up and checked on us pretty often and made sure our glasses were full. However the food was a bit questionable for terms of the quality. My friend's chicken fried steaks were overcooked and quite rubbery. Another friend ordered steak to be medium rare and it came out well done. The menu is HUGE!! gorgeously prepared with excellent flavors! we spent as much time enjoying our meal as we did looking at all of the dishes coming out of the kitchen! These people can cook! We stopped in for breakfast early on a Sunday morning, & it wasn't too busy. The staff were nice. Most importantly though, everything was cooked PERFECTLY. My wife and I went to have breakfast. The single on duty waitress did a fantastic job. However, you can only do so much and her employer has not made her a manager per se. The owner is new to restaurant s and his full time job is an accountant. So he knows little the food business it is cash flow cash flow cash flow. They have been in business (new ownership) 3 months. The food selection is still limited and does not reflect restaurant style servings (make lots of item from same basic ingredients). His cook is NOT short order as was evident in the time difference of arrival between our two different selections of food. He can't master doing two things at the same time The eating area is simple and clean no loud music and ample light. However, he knows nothing about lighting as he has track lights pointed at outside windows vs down at tables and booths Portions were large. Actually to large and wasteful. Better off with lowering his prices and cutting sizes. The potatoes were good but too much. Salad on a breakfast plate was wasteful and did not add to the plates presentation Menu not well organized misspellings. Coffee: 2/10 While you can add your own creamer and sugar, the coffee itself tasted a little "burnt". Note that I'm no coffee aficionado but that's what my tastebuds picked up. Wish they had raw sugar but not sure if that would have impacted the flavor much. We both ordered the griddle favorite which comes with two eggs your way, two meats (note ham is an up charge), Nutella French toast with bananas and cinnamon French toast. Griddle w/nutella and bananas: 5/10 I was automatically disappointed when my eggs came out and the cheese wasn't cooked in with them as requested. I asked for cheddar cheese but as you can see in the photo, that's not cheeses and the cheese is on top of the eggs. The sausage was overcooked and the bacon was ok. The French toast didn't have much flavor so I'm glad I went with Nutella and bananas because there was no flavor. Griddle w/cinnamon French toast: 5/10 Same situation with the eggs but also there was too much cheese. The person I was with, enjoyed French toast, but there was a misunderstanding on the meat order and by the time they received the second meat, they were almost done with their meal. My son told me this is a new restaurant. He has gone here a couple times. He wanted me to try it out for breakfast while I was in town. Son had a Veggie Omelette, I had the Biscuits and Gravy. (both were good) the gravy was the stick to your ribs kind. Omelette was fluffy. Restaurant was clean, staff were friendly, food was good. I've been patronizing Tops Café since their original opening. They haven't he changed ownership. The menu has been expanded to include lots of appetizers and an extended bar menu. I almost can't express how I feel about the restaurant now. I do not like at all the change in the aesthetics. The windows have been blacked in and there's an inside bar now that has a black schematic. It's really dark and strange next to what was I really open in Bright diner feel before. So there's a black bar and the original fresh feeling mint green/neutral palette. It's dark and weird. It's almost the lounge feel which is not consistent at all with the food experience. That's sad. The people are nice. And the food is absolutely still consistent. I can see myself turning into a carrier customer but I don't enjoy the dine in experience anymore. read more

I'm really disappointed with my experience here. While the food itself was quite good, the service was abysmal. We waited about 10 minutes just to get menus or any acknowledgment from the staff, who seemed to simply ignore us. I had to get up and request menus and drinks myself, which felt awkward and unnecessary. After another 5-10 minutes, we finally had our drink order taken, but the server seemed disinterested and unfriendly. It took another 20 minutes for a different server to check in about our food, and then we waited an additional 30-40 minutes for our meals to arrive. At that point, we had been in the restaurant for over an hour without receiving our food or drink refills, despite there only being two other tables occupied. The lack of training and evident disinterest from the staff made the experience incredibly frustrating. We were patient and respectful throughout, and we were prepared to spend a good amount and leave a decent tip. Unfortunately, due to the poor service, we won't be returning. It was very tasty. The service was attentive and friendly. When I asked about the bad reviews, I learned the ownership changed recently. What a hidden gem in Far North Dallas on the corner of Midway and Frankfurt! We were intending on going to another well-known eatery for Sunday brunch, but it was packed. Instead we ended up going to Tops Cafe and boy are we glad we did. First, there was plenty of packing and an abundance of seating. We were seated right away and provided menus - what a massive menu, not only for breakfast, but for lunch and dinner too! I believe it was the owner who then came by; since it was our first time, he provided plenty of recommendations. We finally decided on the traditional breakfast and their Savannah skillet. Both meals were cooked to perfection and the portion sizes were just right (not the gargantuan sizes that you see served elsewhere which is a waste). Great coffee too! The service is usually good but today was terrible today There was only one waitress working and there were 30 customers in the restaurant. We waited for 35 or 40 minutes and finally we're getting up to leave and she came over and took our order. It was still a long wait because there were so many dishes ahead of ours. I felt sorry for the waitress because she can't help that. she's the only one here and she was apologetic and embarrassed and a little overwhelmed which I understood. My son and I went here for breakfast. My son had the waffle combo with turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, and hash browns. He also had hot chocolate. He really enjoyed the meal; the bacon was fried perfectly crispy and the hash browns had the perfect crust on them without being over done. The scrambled eggs were done right too. The waffle was brown and the right level of slightly crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and served with hot syrup and whipped butter. I had the blueberry pancake combo with ham and eggs over easy. They asked if I wanted the fresh blueberries in the pancakes or on top, which allowed me to ask for my blueberries in the waffle. The ham was a thick slice of ham and the eggs were perfectly over easy (egg white done, egg yolk nice and creamy). The only thing that wasn't excellent was the coffee. It was good, but not exceptional. I am a bit picky about coffee, as I grind my own Sumatran beans at home, so my review may not be on target for a diner. For diner coffee, it was fine. My review rating is for the food and the friendly service. This would be a great neighborhood restaurant to keep around. They s aid all their dinner specials are scratch made.
