Salmon bagel and fruit plate
Ivan S.

It's a hotel restaurant with overpriced menu, all you need to know about it. I stayed at JW Marriott and had breakfast here. Salmon bagel I got was $17, fruit plate another $7, and coffee $5. The JW currently has their lounge closed for elites and they give $30 breakfast credit per person per night, so that works out, but otherwise definitely wouldn't go here. Oh and they have breakfast buffet for $24/person, the buffet actually looked quite nice with a lot of options.

Can I interest you in some "Amish" chicken (hint: say no)?

Boy oh boy, did I want to love this place. I go to the National Theatre about once a month and the proximity score is a 5. Sadly, how close you are to my final destination earns you no stars. We showed up for a pre-show lunch at 12:30. I understand that this is the end of the brunch buffet but I knew that going in. The place was mostly empty with a limited number of people catching some March Madness and the service was a little bit slow considering the empty tables. To say that the menu was thin would be an understatement. My 11 year-old, who despises being offered a kids' menu, had to ask to see the kids' menu in hopes of improved options. So let's talk food. I had what they referred to as "Amish Chicken." Now I'm pretty confident that the Amish are not known for pounding a chicken breast for 30+ minutes but this poor thing looked like it had been run over by a convoy of Mack trucks on 495. The "Amish" process then apparently is to overcook said chicken by about fifteen minutes. I'm going to go with, "not a fan." The youngest (the one who reverted to the kids' menu) went with the spaghetti and meatballs which I immediately wished that I'd ordered when my "Amish" chicken showed up. Well...that is until I tasted it. Is it possible for a meatball to taste like freezer burn (that's a rhetorical question)? Why yes, yes it is. I'm going to go with "seriously not a fan." Kid #2 ordered a burger that he said was "meh" which, considering how the rest of the meal was going, was a ringing endorsement. The fries, though, looked great but were a tremendous letdown. The Mrs. had a salmon caesar salad which was also "meh." So I gave them one star because I can't give them zero (it's like getting 200 points for filling your name in correctly on the SAT) and I gave them one star for the burger's and salad's meh-ness. We will not be returning here for lunch...or probably ever. Sorry.

The honest reason for the 4th star was our service. It was WOW!! Genuinely some of the BEST service ever!! Smiles, prompt, kind and everyone seemed to be happy to be there and loved their job. This is so rare. Our kids even commented on how nice and happy and friendly everyone was!! Well done!! Food was ok but I'd come back for the service alone. I had the burger and Fries. Decent. Loved the bun. Nice and buttery. Hubby had fried Chicken- that's a huge winner!! Kiddos had spaghetti w meatballs - great for kids and generous kid sized portion. Appetizers was great/ spicy chicken. I'd order that again for sure!!

It is conveniently located next to the national Theater. The menu is typical fair. The salmon and burger were okay. I wouldn't say this is a destination restaurant but for the area it's okay.

After a busy day of travel and walking to most of the monuments, I made it back to my hotel and was exhausted. Travelling alone for a conference, I was going to venture to dinner outside of the hotel, but decided to try Avenue Grill which was in my hotel, the JW Marriot. I was skeptical at first. The decor was a little outdated and the restaurant was pretty empty. I was seated immediately, but it took a while for a server to greet me. The menu has small plates, salads and entrees. I decided on two small plates as my meal. It wasn't a large menu, but there was variety and I wanted to try multiple items. I ordered the crab Mac and cheese and fried brussel sprouts. The brussels were crisp and delicious. They had a sweet sauce and some basil and onions mixed in. I didn't care for the basil, but still devoured half the bowl before moving on to the Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was divine. It was piled really high so it was like playing jenga to make sure it didn't tip over. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was rich. I liked the crisp texture of breadcrumbs and parmesan on top. And the pieces of crab were fairly generous chunks. I enjoyed the meal a lot. Other than the somewhat slow service and decor, I would recommend trying the food or order through room service if you are staying at the hotel.

Turkey Club Sandwich w/Homemade Chips. The picture doesn't do it justice on how much food this actually is! Yummy!

We were in D.C. for a sightseeing day. It was getting later in the day and the food court at the Ronald Reagan building was closing. We looked up something nearby to eat. Avenue Grill popped up and away we went! I'm so glad we stopped here. The restaurant is located in the JW Marriott. The hostess was very friendly. Everything was very clean and modern. You are given a bread basket which after a long day of not eating made it delightful! I had ordered the turkey club sandwich which is served with homemade chips. Oh My Goodness!! This sandwich alone could be easily split between two people. There was so much food on this plate! Usually when you order a sandwich, it's portioned enough for one. My friend and I had to chuckle about how much food was brought out! And let me tell you.... this was wonderfully great! There was so much turkey! There was so many chips! I did not regret one bite of my meal. If you are looking for somewhere to please your appetite during your sightseeing, stop here! You'll love it!

The bar was clean and well stocked. The drinks were on point. The bartender was friendly and every helpful. The corn bread of beyond delicious. This was a great place for a night cap and to warm up from the cold weather.

Hours are wrong. Maybe fix that so people can actually eat food. Geez this hotel is ridiculous.

Well I do enjoy burgers and plenty of places have upped their burger game. As much as it cost for a burger at certain fast food places you might as well hit up some of these other places. The prices are basically the same now. On a few trips to Capital Grille I did go with the burger and so I decided to check out its affiliate Capital Burger. Capital Burger actually has more burger options to choose for over Capital Grille and a more slimmed down menu. Still with the name burger in its name, you know where their focus is. I went with the bacon cheeseburger that comes with candied smoke bacon that came at $22 with your chose of sides (fries or various salads). It was cooked to the perfect medium rare and you can tell when a burger is cooked with better ingredients and cooked with a give a damn. It was not thrown together, and the fries were not just sitting under a heating lamp. I actually ordered a to go burger for the spouse. Here is where customer service comes in. I was asked how far I had to travel and the person taking my order said she will separate portions so it will travel better. Thank you. It is that little extra that goes a long way. This time I went with the Capital Burger to go along with some key lime pie to nibble on later. Great service and great food. There are plenty of good burger places but if you are a burger fan then definitely check this place out. Absolutely no disappointment. For a true high end burger experience I have no problem giving this place a solid five stars.

The bartenders were friendly, filled waters promptly and were fast. I came in about 5pm on a Saturday and there were only 5-6 other people at the bar, but the dining area was pretty full. This place has an almost pioneer-ish vibe with all of the taxidermy on the walls mixed with like your Uncle's cabin in the woods in the 60s. I was digging it. I started with the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese. Wow. I could have eaten all of them. The bartender and I agreed that it wasn't a good idea. He said he did it once. I also had a mint julep, and while I normally like them, this one was a little different. The presentation was cool, but the drink was all ice, which was disappointing. For dinner I had the Butcher's Steak, medium well (should have gotten medium) and the Brussels sprouts. I'm thinking about the leftovers now. The folks next to me ordered my exact meal because it looked so good. I will indeed return! Thanks, St. Anselm!

They had a variety of different cocktails, beers, and wines. I was particularly impressed with the Asian beers and Japanese whiskey, you don't find that too often. I really liked the inside, a lot of mahogany wood panels. Old fashion boujie, with a lot of bird art. Service was slow because there was a very large party seated in my section. But to be fair, our waitress tried to be attentive. Once we got our order in though, the food came out pretty quickly. This place is great for romantic dates to huuuge parties of ppl. It's also a music venue, but didn't see that side. They have different musicians/bands playing Friday's and Sunday's.
