I was staying at the Courtyard Marriott in Washington, DC for a conference, and at the end of each long day I wanted just two things: a nice dinner and a chance to catch my breath and unwind. I had absolutely no energy left to figure out where to eat, so the hotel restaurant, The Delegate, seemed like the easiest choice. It turned out to be a GREAT choice. I was greeted by the hostess with a smile and promptly seated near the bar. Despite being close to the bar, it wasn't too loud at all. The restaurant sits on a corner with beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, giving the space a light and airy feeling. There is also a more intimate area with dark wood paneling, but I was perfectly happy by the windows where I could people-watch and decompress after a full conference day. Then I met my server, Erika. What a delight! She was happy, bubbly and always had a smile on her face. She was attentive without hovering and somehow managed to keep my water glass filled throughout dinner. I couldn't decide between the Smash Burger and the Chicken & Waffles, so I asked Erika for advice. Her first question was, "How hungry are you?" Apparently, the Chicken & Waffles is HUGE! I decided the Smash Burger was the safer choice. Let me tell you: it was the best Smash Burger I've ever had. I ordered it medium rare, and that's exactly how it arrived. The burger was tender and juicy with just the right amount of cheese. And the French fries? Piping hot and crispy--exactly the way fries should be! Since it was only the first day of the conference, I decided I deserved dessert. The cheesecake was beautifully presented with fresh berries and a lovely sauce. A perfect ending to the meal. My experience was so good that when the second evening rolled around, I didn't even consider going somewhere else. Back to The Delegate I went! This time I ordered the Salmon Piccata, again requesting my salmon medium rare. Erika made sure the kitchen got it just right--and they absolutely did. Perfectly cooked and delicious. When a hotel restaurant is simply convenient, you eat there once. When you voluntarily return the next night, they're doing something right. Between the quality of the food, the relaxing atmosphere and Erika's wonderful service, The Delegate became part of my conference experience rather than simply a place to grab dinner. There is honestly nothing I would change. I'm already planning ahead: when I return for the conference next year, I know exactly where I'll be having dinner. I was in DC for the day looking for a nearby lunch spot for me and my mom. The Delegate was one of the first places to pop up. Just a heads up that it's INSIDE the Marriott and you pretty much walk straight into the restaurant. It wasn't too busy when we walked in despite the convention happening near by and it's such a calm, snazzy vibe! A perfect spot for grabbing a bite and catching up with a friend. Erika was such a delight and very patient with us as we figured out what we wanted to eat. When my mom was concerned about the spiciness level of the shrimp and grits, Erika was kind enough to let her test out the sauce first before committing to the dish. Onto the food! I ordered the Grilled Mahi Sandwich and my Mom got Chef Sammy's Award Winning Shrimp and Grits. The Mahi was very well done! I will say it was not the most seasoned and drier than I would've liked but still SUPER fresh. I think a different green would serve this sandwich better, the arugula was a bit bitter for my taste, I think maybe a kale or spinach would provide more umami. Amazing portion size and again, the fish itself was cooked very well; tender with an edge of crust. I'd have liked it to be seasoned a bit more. A solid 7.5/10 I know I just like my food saucy so was glad I ordered some extra mayo and ketchup and red onion for it. Mommy LOVED her dish. Came here for the happy hour while staying at the Marriott Convention Center, where it was located. The Delegate's HH is Mon-Friday 4-6p. It had an impressive menu of specialty prices drinks and food. We wanted to sit in the bar area, but a convention gathering occupied that space and we were seating in the dining area, which was no big deal. Our server was a pleasant young lady and greeted us in no time. We placed our order: tequila and pineapple juice, fish tacos, mini beef sliders, order of fried, and buffalo wings. Our drinks came first and they were good. It was rail liquor, but the drink was sufficient. Our food order came out next: the fries were hot, crispy and not greasy; the wings (although only four) were fried nice covered in buffalo sauce with a side of carrots and ranch dressing; the mini sliders arrived on a soft mini bun with a sauce and pickle; and the fish tacos (blackened fish) came on flour tortillas with a a nice helping of toppings that were fresh. All in all we enjoyed the food: everything was hot, fresh and filling enough for two people. All in all, a nice HH spot if you are in the area. read more

My family and I ate here a few times during our stay. For our first lunch at the hotel, I had the grilled peaches and prosciutto. I also had the cheese flatbread. Both were very good. We also had a few breakfasts here, I had the berry French toast, which was amazing! The bread was coated in corn flakes, which gave it a nice crunch. For a different breakfast, I had the toasted oats oatmeal. A big bowl of oatmeal came with brown sugar, bananas, and sliced almonds. Tasted good, but it's your standard hotel oatmeal. I did like that it came with fresh bananas and almonds. Michelle served us both times and she was lovely! She gave us some tips on the Metra and where to stand for the 4th of July parade. We really liked the delegate. While it is infact the lobby bar and restaurant for the Residence Inn Downtown/Convention center, it certainly seems capable of standing on its own. Besides the bar, we might have been one of a few tables going for an early Friday night dinner. I was originally concerned because an empty restaurant is usually not good for anyone! The food was really very good. Deviled eggs were great, with some spicy addition beyond the typical paprika. The grilled chicken sandwich was loaded with bacon and avocado. The chicken gyro was served open-faced, and was more a knife-and-fork affair. Lastly the shrimp and grits was on point! Lots of huge shrimp, all properly seasoned, grits had a nice texture, accompanied by a really delicious sauce. On average, it was expensive, but all the food was executed well. Service was friendly and efficient. For those driving in the city, we found $10 parking for the evening in a nearby garage via SpotHero. Usually just saying it's a hotel restaurant is enough for me to say, no way, but I'm glad we tried The Delegate! Pleasant surprise! read more

My husband ordered the members turkey sandwich with smoked bacon sandwich and it had fries so I stole Some of his :). The waitress was very friendly and gave us insight of The neighborhood. This week I have been staying at the Courtyard Downtown. Part of my great experience was dining at the delegate I dined there several times mainly at the bar. Unfortunately the bar was out of a ton of beverages (liquor). No options for those in my party that were drinkers. I did have a great dining experience with Victoria which is why I left a higher star review. Victoria was super friendly and worked so hard to make sure my table was pleased. I had the grilled chicken Sandwich which was mighty tasty. Victoria was quick to check on my party and refill drinks timely. The venue had great menu with tons of options. The rooftop of our hotel is actually the Delegate Rooftop bar. It is much nicer at 8:30 when there's a cool breeze, lights, comfy seating, music and a bar. The view is obstructed by the large convention center. Since we are staying at the hotel, there isn't pressure to get drinks at the bar. There is a Delegates Restaurant & Bar in the lobby. We came here to eat after traveling to attend a speech convention. The food was absolutely incredible! We had the burrata salad and the chicken burger - so good! Azeb helped us and she was so amazing! She recommended some delicious wine and helped us problem solve when we couldn't figure out what to eat! I came here before happy hour, so the prices were steep and the place was empty. The bartenders were nice and social, which is always a good thing. The food was blah. The third drink was made by a different person and I could tell she assumed she knew what I ordered so I overlooked the error. It was restaurant week, so we opted for brunch here given the solid menu options. I wasn't aware that the restaurant was a like hotel lobby bar and restaurant, wide open to lots of traffic. Not a big fan. We were seated towards the back, near the restroom pathway. Our beverage of choice was the classic mimosa. The champagne to juice ratio was just OK. Could've gone for a couple more ounces of champagne lol! We started off with the deviled eggs and the fried green tomatoes. The deviled eggs did not miss, the salty savory flavor was perfect. The tomatoes were absolutely a No, the breading/batter used was super gritty and dense tasting. They got that dish all wrong, which is a shame since the jalapeño jelly was so so good... but couldn't save the dish. For our main, we opted for the smothered chicken and biscuits and the L street scramble. Though the fried chicken tenders are small, resembling nuggets, they were seasoned well and fried exceptionally well. The biscuit itself was an 8/10, almost perfect but not quite because it was almost TOO dense. But stacking each biscuit bite with egg, chicken, grits... yeah I know, greedy...was perfect! My cousin said that the scramble was bland, she had to add table salt and pepper to her dish. Unfortunately I didn't get to confirm her review with a bite since I was digging into my dish. For dessert, we had the mixed fruit and cinnamon roll. The fruit seemed fresh, and was served nice and cold. As for the roll? Pretty disappointing. It was very tough and stiff! The glaze was yummy and that's it, we barely touched it. (They actually bought out the dessert barely through our main so it set). Service wise? 2/10. Incredibly slow, but not materially noticeable since we were in deep convo. Also, didn't like how the dessert was served TOO soon, it shouldn't have been fired so soon. read more

The Delegate saved our celebration! We were planning a 50th birthday party for a good friend. There were 20 of us. Too large of a group for main dining seating and too small for private rooms as they were requiring $3000 minimum! I dealt with Camilo. He was so patient and helpful. Service was chick fil a plus some. We had so much back and forth with our numbers but he was great. Made me feel as if I was not doing it alone. The night of the event everyone there worked hard to make everything so beautiful. Service was impeccable. The food was delicious. I chose the salmon and grits. I had been looking forward to it from the first time I read the suggested menu. The dish was amazing. Someone knew I am a sauce person and really did it right. Was staying at this hotel and decided to check out their happy hour. The brussels sprouts were the star of the show! They were SOOOO good. Small portion but I almost placed a second order before finishing. The blackened salmon tacos were dry, and don't come with any sauce. Do NOT recommend. Fish was definitely over cooked. The wine was fine, however I was initially served it in a dirty glass, like a whole lip print on the glass. The lighting is poor at the bar and I saw the bar tender checking it and since he was pouring, thought it was clean. WRONG. He poured me a new glass though. The bites at HH are $8/ order and include things I didn't try like chicken wings, fried green tomatoes, and sliders. Drinks ranged from $5-8 and HH is only from 330-630pm M-F. This is, by far, one of the best rooftop venues in the city. The Delegate sits atop the Residence Inn, across from the Washington Convention Center. I visited this gem a few years ago when my Bestie threw a birthday party for her guy. Loved it then and love it now. I visited this spot on a Wednesday evening where the weather was absolutely perfect! We found seats on the sofas to grab a cocktail and lite fare. I ordered a Margarita. He ordered a Tito's. We had wings with mambo sauce that were YUMMY!! I have to mention the amazing service from Dawan Hatch! We were having trouble ordering one of the build your own cocktails online (they have the QR code thingy where we place an order online, then they bring the order to you) and Dawan went above and beyond to ensure that we were able to successfully navigate the site and order our desired items. I gave an extra 2 stars in this review thanks to Dawan and Julio who also made our experience one to remember.
