Autodidact came highly recommended when I asked Reddit to recommend a brewery in North Jersey. Glad I made the trip as the beer was definitely top tier. My girlfriend and I stopped in on a Friday evening during a weekend trip to High Point State Park. They only had nine beers on tap but there was nice variety and excellent quality in the lineup. Several IPA's and hazy ales but also a grisette, a German pilsner, an English mild and a milk stout. They don't offer flights. Interestingly enough, as much as I enjoy flights at breweries, I've actually found that not offering them is usually a good sign as it is the mark of a brewery that is serious about beer and knows what they are doing. This was true for Autodidact as each beer was excellent. Five star beer but four star taproom. 6 o'clock on a Friday night but only about seven other people there so it was kind of dead. I didn't enjoy the dim, colored lighting or the cold concrete slab bar. We were sitting at the bar and I hated that the only menu available was behind us so we constantly had to turn around to look at what we wanted next. No beers available in the to go fridge but they were able to make us a few crowlers. We live too far away to come back any time soon, but I'm looking forward to tucking into the beers at home sometime soon. read more

One of my favorite breweries in NJ :D I loved this place before even entering it. How did I know you ask? It has great brewery energy from the outside. Truth! Upon entering we were greeted by a nice gentleman who also served us. There was music playing and the vibes were super duper chill. There was only a couple late on but they were chillin like us. Loved that! I ordered: - The Notebooks She Kept, Grisette w/ Green Strawberries, collab with Carton Brewing (gf) 5/5 - (2) Daylily, Hazy Pale Ale, Citra and Mosaic hops (me) 5/5 - Omni, Hard Seltzer, lemon-lime flavor (gf) 5/5 I love this space and enjoyed being here tremendously. If they had a food truck outside I probably would have stayed for a couple hours. This is the best brewery in New Jersey. I've had all the other contenders (Troon is great if you don't want to be able to drink it or want an argument) and this is the best. Only drawback was the traffic pattern around this place but it had ample parking. Really a top-notch place. read more

Loved this brewery! Excellent tasting beers, beautiful vibe, and really cool beertenders that were fun to talk to. I had the White Shorrs New England IPA, which was super hazy and juicy, incredible flavors. I also had the Hazy Pale Ale, big fan of its juicy yet mellow finish. The beertender was so nice and I really enjoyed talking to him, I wish I remembered his name! I was visiting family from San Diego and was beyond happy to find this gem. I love a good brewery...and Autodidact was a hit with our neighbors and me. While I only had two beers - the porter and the grisette - they were both fantastic. I'd never had a grisette before and while I'm WAY more of a porter/stout guy, this grisette was a home run. This place is way bigger than I ever expected and the simple decor and furniture oddly made it very welcoming...as did the bartenders. This is an amazing brewery. So happy to have them in town. It's a small storefront in a stripmall so I was expecting the inside to be a lot smaller than it is. It's actually huge. Lots of table and areas for sitting, a bar area, couches, plenty of bathrooms and of course the brewing area. The beer is awesome. Tons of selection on tap and a few different options to bring home in a four pack. The staff is super friendly and personable and we were chatting with who I think is the owner for a while. They do a great job of bringing in local food vendors. When I was there Minuteman BBQ was onsite and it was sooo good. They also fill the calendar with fun events like vinyl night and emo trivia night. I definitely look forward to coming back! read more

I've been in NJ now for a few weeks. I live close by here and never got the chance to come in once they opened. I am so happy I chose to walk in and try it out. The beer is exceptional, and well prepared with unique flavors and options. The atmosphere is very inviting. A zen mixed with modern which brings a calming but fun experience. I visited the Autodidact brewery this week. It was a Saturday about 3 pm in the afternoon. Their were a few patrons sampling their beer beer selections along with a larger group that had children ages 5-10 year. I like kids but at breweries. The kids were playing with large wooden blocks that seem to be falling on the hard floors with a resounding vibration. This was not an enjoyable experience for me or my guest. This was the worst part of my experience. The nice part is that the cheerful female bartender immediately greeted us as we walked in and offered samples if we wished. Two samples can be tasted for free. I loved that. We selected the amber larger (5.1 abv) $6 for 12 ounces and the Solace (8.0 abv) $8 for 12 ounces). The beer comes in 4 oz, 12 oz. and 16 oz.. Their are no flights. Both beers were to our liking but I really did not care for her Solace. Snacks are offered like tortilla chips, guacamole and chips and pretzels. You can bring your own food or order delivered food. A food truck arrives on selected days and if you visit their online website the days are posted. If you have a service dog they are invited. All other dogs must remain on the outside patio. read more

In a small, non-descript strip mall along NJ Route 10 in Morris Plains, Autodidact Beer offers a variety of tasty beers in their intimate but comfortable tasting room. I wasn't expecting much from a strip mall tenant, but was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the beers and casual upscale ambiance and design of the tasting room. Autodidact features only eight taps in its tasting room, but serves up a variety of beers including Saison, Pale Ale, Grisette, Oatmeal Stout, Sour, and Pilsner in "taster" (4 oz), "half pour" (12 oz), and "full pour" (16 oz) servings. The bartender mentioned the owners were planning to expand the number of taps to offer additional varieties in the tasting room. I'd definitely like to see more variety on tap. When we arrived on a Friday night around 8pm, the tasting room was almost empty with only a handful of other patrons and remained that way until we closed our tabs and left. I enjoyed the Reunion, a hoppy Pale Ale with New Zealand Hops, and the Hawks and Doves, an Oatmeal Stout.. giving them a solid 4 out of 5 stars for their smooth, consistent flavors. Prices vary to depending upon size, not variety or alcohol content (all of which fell in the 4-6% range when I was there), from $4 for a taster to $8 for a full pour. Surprisingly, Autodidact Beer doesn't offer flights of "taster" samples to sample several beers at a time and guests are limited to two taster samples at a time. They do offer beer 'to go' with a limited selection of cans (12 oz 4-packs of Wash Grisette and 16 oz 4-packs of Daylily Pale Ale) and a larger selection of anything on-tap in 32 oz crowlers (a giant 32 oz aluminum can filled with beer straight from the tap and sealed, preserving the beer's carbonation for about three weeks) or BYO growlers (a glass container filled with beer straight from the tap and capped off, preserving the beer for a few days). Parking is available in the front and back of the building. The parking lot in front of the building facing NJ Route 10 can fill up quickly, but there is plenty of space in the parking lot behind the building and there are entrances in the front and back of the building. PRO TIP: New Jersey's draconian liquor laws prohibit microbreweries from serving food, but light snacks are available. You can also order via your favorite delivery app or enjoy Japanese ramen or yakisoba noodles from Tokyo Ramen next door. read more

My husband and I stopped here on a random day off of work and had an awesome experience! We have been to many breweries (and can be tough critics) but were very happy with this one! Parking was easy, the staff was so fun and pleasant, the beer was awesome (lots of collabs with our favorite other breweries), and loved the design! It was a comfortable place to hang out and spend some time. I'm not a big fan of all IPAs but found some that I loved (doubles and triples too). We cannot wait to see what they continue to do.
