This review is a bit belated. About a year back I decided to try a Mac. I looked these guys up, saw the positive reviews and thought I would try them out. The guy who greeted me was very pleasant. Since I do IT for a living, I asked very specific questions, IE maximum amount of ram, why no OSX installation disc, etc. While not entirely Mac savvy, I knew enough to ask the right questions. After hearing all this I decided to buy a late 2008 Macbook. I was advised that they were installing OSX off of a volume copy and that once I registered an iTunes account I would be able to reinstall later should I decide too. Fast forward 6 months I decided I wanted a newer/more powerful Macbook. I try to download OSX from Apple, does not work. I also start looking at the value of my current Macbook on Ebay and find that I overpaid by about $250. I'll get back to this in a minute. I went back to Austin MacWorks and ask for help to reinstall OSX and am told that they charge $70-$80 for a reinstall. I find the same sales guy and explain to him our previous conversation regarding my registration with iTunes and the ability to download OSX, he claims we never had that conversation. Our discussion gets heated fast, and finally the only way they will reinstall OSX for free is if I promise to never come back to the store. Now I am not without fault. I should have researched Macbook values before going into the store. I do know that generally Apple products hold their value longer. They have too to justify the higher initial cost. It has now been a year and my $870 Macbook is worth $450 at best on eBay. I will be lucky to get $400 on Craigslist. My goal with this review is to let you know my experience with this store. As far as I am concerned they are very dishonest. They purposely mislead even the somewhat informed just to get another sale. Yes, I realize they are there to keep their doors opened. But I can tell you without reservation I will not only never visit this store again, but I have been telling everyone I know about their misleading behaviors. Treat me well, I'll be your biggest salesperson. Treat me bad, I'll be your biggest detractor. To summarize: Overpriced products. These guys do everything they can to help you with your machine, even if it's an older model. If you go to the Apple store, they'll just tell you to upgrade. At MacWorks they'll help you try to solve the problem, and if they can't, they can work with you to get a good price on a gently used or brand new model. Don't expect instant turnaround, but as with anything, you have to pick two: Fast, Good, Cheap. These guys' services are reasonably priced, and they know what they're doing. Thank you for the assistance from the professional techs at Austin Mac Works. It did take a bit longer than I expected, and I did have to call to check in a couple of times, but they were very kind and professional and did their best to help me. My issue was a bit hard to detect and it took a couple of trips to figure it out. In the end, they did find the issue and since it was not repairable, they only charged me the diagnostics fee. I feel I got a great value for the time they spent troubleshooting. They even tried to spend a good deal of time working on the diagnostics with me there in the store, instead of just the "drop it off and see you later" approach. I felt they really cared. While I visited the store, I could see they had other happy return customers. read more

My main complaint is not everyone that may work on your computer is the most personable and clear on timing of repairs. I love these guys. They managed to save my hard drive after I had accidentally doused it in gatorade. Another time I came in and they were able to diagnose and fix my computer while I waited (about 15 minutes) and they didn't even charge me! I completely trust the staff. Every time I've gone in they list out all my options and always seem to find me the cheapest one even if it involves some jumping through hoops on their part. They're really knowledgable and don't have all the hassle of going to an Apple store. While I was in Austin I tried to buy all my Mac accessories through them. If I could given a zero rating, I would. I had an appointment to get a battery changed in my iPhone. I show up on time to have the guy tell me they don't have batteries in stock and that it will take a week to order one. While I could've waited a week, I inquired why they didn't call and tell me they didn't have them in stock. Their response: we don't have any info on you. Really? Nothing from Apple for my appointment with a number or email? Nope. I asked why they would accept appointments if they don't have the batteries. Again, Apple's fault. I called Apple and shocker: they get all the information necessary to contact me. The guy who "helped" could not have cared less. I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple store to get it fixed. Don't waste your time with this place. read more

With a fried computer, Macworks did their best to make the heinous process of sending out my computer for repair, getting the proper parts, and setting me up with a temporary computer. They put up with my constant phone calls, my tears, and frustration. In the end, Jairo (employee) worked his wizardry and got me back up and running. read more

After feeling like I was brushed off at the Apple store because my MacBook Pro is vintage they recommended Austin MacWorks. I drove right there and was the only customer. The RAM got dislodged from a fall off a shelf and in a few minutes they took my laptop from a black screen to running again for less than the diagnostic charge. Decided to replace the battery since the charge capacity was reduced and that upgrade was completed in less than 10 minutes. They were fast, friendly, efficient, reasonably priced, and non-condescending. They also do warranty work on newer tech so I'll go there instead of the Apple store that's often crowded and sometimes treats older people and equipment with a hands off attitude. read more

They helped me extend the life of my MacBookPro to 8 years as I was holding out for the new model. The motherboard died just a few months short of the new computer, so they rented me one and gave me a generous rate. read more

This is about as good as customer service gets. I dropped my Mac Book Pro and they did everything they could and then told me that I would be best off letting them send it to Apple. I got it back very quickly for a very fair price and it works great. Then I was talking to Ramana and he noticed my busted screen on my Iphone and volunteered to repair that for me without my even asking!!! As the GM of a upscale Italian restaurant, I can truly appreciate their focus on taking care of their customers. This place is one of the best in Austin and if you need any work done I would highly recommend them. read more

Absolutely amazing!!! The manufactures store (not allowed to use other business names in reviews) said that they could not perform the recall repair to my phone (replace battery and power button) because the phone had a scratch on it and their policy excused them from making the repair if there was ANY damage. When I got home I called their support number...got the same excuse. Never having seen the phone...just basing their determination on something some genius decided in the store. Contacted corporate customer support...same illogical decision based on the same illogical judgement that the phone was damaged and therefore was ineligible for replacing known faulty components that were not in any way related to the alleged "damage" (again, a 3mm scratch on the frame of the phone). This battle has lasted over a week and still isnt resolve. the issue with them isnt about the phone or the recall...its about absurd "support"....but that is a different matter which I have addressed with a review of THAT company. Just to make sure that it I wasnt completely off my rocker by thinking that the phone was completely serviceable, I went to Mac Works. I didnt tell them anything about the pathetic service offered by the geniuses and several layers of "support" above them. I just handed them the phone and asked if they did recall work. 24 minutes after walking in the door at Mac Works...I walked back out...with a repaired phone, He was able to do what the manufacturer said couldnt be done. He did it while standing at the counter...not an elaborate work station. He did it while helping other customers. He did it while showing me what he was doing. Most importantly....he did it by using common sense and not looking for excuses not to do it. He had no difficulties at all. And didnt charge me a penny since it was a factory recall. Moral to this story....dont necessarily buy what the manufactureres reps might tell you, no matter how smart their job title declares them to be. And dont rely on the manufacturers "support" to support you....they support the previous decisions made by those below them. If their determination seems illogical...go to another AUTHORIZED repair service provider like Mac Works....they might agree with the manufacturer...or...they might be able to do what the other say cant be done...because they actually try. While they did partially fix my computer so that it could boot, they did not make sure everything else was working right and I have to take it to Apple to figure it out because I do not want to deal with these people again. They did not give me a quote, barely even spoke to me and were talking with another customer on the phone while dealing with me. I would not recommend. read more

Outstanding. Visited the 2nd. St. location downtown and was greeted by friendly, extremely knowledgeable staff. My computer was failing to boot and I was at a loss. I was given a quick, honest assessment of what potential problems may have been affecting my machine and given an estimate for repair. I left feeling optimistic that if my computer could be repaired, these guys had the skill set to do so. Sooner than later, my laptop was up and running (with a new hard drive), all my data had been captured (i'm the guy who never backs up) and transferred, and I was back to work. Austin Macworks understood the urgency behind my repair and acted accordingly. It's nice to know that in a world plagued by increasingly poor customer service, there are still a few businesses that dish out the quality of care that we all hope to receive. Apple's Magsafe chargers are known for breaking due to what is called strain relief. There happens to be a settlement going on that allows you to get your adaptor replaced for free for up to three years after initial purchase. It's happened to me twice in the past two years. Cool? Cool. Well, Apple's website said I could visit MacWorks to get a replacement, which was good to hear, since I try to avoid the Domain at all costs on the weekend. I contacted Macworks beforehand, told them of my situation, asked if they would replace it and was told yes. When I got there, the technician told me that a charger "would never do this unless I did something to it" and didn't believe it was covered under warranty. I guess this missed this bit on Apple's website: Resolution Note: This program will cover strain relief for a period of three years after the purchase of an adapter with computer or a standalone adapter. Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary. Pending the results of evaluation, you may or may not be eligible for a replacement adapter free of charge. Signs of accidental damage would negate any coverage. Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements. When he spoke with his manager, who was the person I spoke with on the phone initially, he said that he would replace it, I would just have to pay full price for it, and that I must have misunderstood him. That is not a replacement, that is me buying a new one. Needless to say, I will go to the Apple store from now on, at least their employees are trained and knowledgable. read more

I've never reviewed anything before. That's how big of an impression this place left on me... I feel compelled to speak up. Honestly, this is the worst customer service experience I have ever had... Long story short, we bought a crappy off brand charger that messed up two older model MacBooks. We knew the news would be bad, but at several different points, I was quoted everything from $50 to $900 to fix each computer. Eventfully, the end result was a $900 quote per computer so I went to pick them up and just cut my losses. As a side note, when I originally went to drop my computers off, without even looking at them, the technician told me the motherboards were probably fried and immediately started trying to sell me a $1200 computer. I dropped my computers off on a Friday, and I was told I would hear something by Monday. I didn't hear anything all week and so on Thursday I called to check in. That's when I was told it was going to be a very minimal repair and that someone would call me on Friday. Someone did call me on Friday, and that's when I was quoted the end $900/ per computer. He told me I could pick them up that afternoon. I couldn't make it on Friday so I went in on Saturday afternoon. My computer was ready but I was told that they "couldn't find" my husband's laptop. What in the world? No apologies. Nothing. Some dude just came out and told me. Finally, after waiting forever in silence with this guy, someone else said they found it but weren't sure which hard drive belonged to my husband. At this point, I'm pretty fed up. I felt like I had been given the run around for over a week. I left the store with a promise that they would call me on Monday after they figure out which hard drive belongs to my husband. This place is such a nightmare that I've thought about reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Save yourself the headache (and massive bill) and run to the nearest Apple Store instead. read more

after i took my computer to the Apple store and was referred to this location, i was advised my issue could be due to two reasons. i took my desktop, they advised that the diagnostic fee would be waived if i decide to have them fix it. i was quoted a time frame, the time frame was not honored and was pushed back a day. the repair ended up costing more than the price of my machine so i did not use their service and paid the diagnostic fee. i also had to request the diagnostic report with my receipt. read more

I said goodby, thank you for the info, and he just hung up the phone as if frustrated with my call. WORSE customer service I have ever received. I have been a customer at MacWorks for several years. I always took my computer to them for repairs, and even recommended them to some of my friends. After being a customer and spending a fair about of money you think I would be treated better than what they treated me. The backlight on my 2009 macbook burnt out, so I took it to macworks to get fixed. They told me that my backlight had burnt out and it would need to be replaced. So I asked them how much it would cost and they told me about $290, and that was IF they could find me a part. Fast forward to a half a week later and they call me to tell me that they "looked"at my computer and told me the same exact thing all over again. Your backlight is out, we need to replace it, it'll cost this much, but this time he goes your computer is only worth $300 so it wouldn't really be worth it to replace. After we got off the phone I started researching how much a new computer would cost, and started doing some price comparisons. I found that at the Apple Store a new macbook pro with a student discount would be $99, so I called MacWorks to see if they could match the price or if they could give any discounts if I traded in my computer. They told me first off that the Macbook Pro that I was wanting to purchase was a "poorly made model" and that I should instead buy the more expensive one. Then I asked about student discounts, price matching, and cost differentiation for trading in my old model. The rude man on the phone told me that they don't give student discounts, that their prices were already matched with the Apple Store, and that they wouldn't give me any discount unless I transferred my data onto the new computer from my old one and if they got to keep my old one. How unethical!! Also he told me that since they couldn't "see my screen" they would have to open up my computer to even transfer anything, which would make the data transfer more expensive. (The Apple Store found this amusing, because they were able to transfer the data by plugging in both machines without ever having to look at the screens) At this time I also did some research to see if I could find that part that I needed cheaper so I could possibly go elsewhere to have it fixed. I found on IFixit that the part I needed was only $29.95 brand new and $19.95 used, this means that MacWorks was trying to charge me 10 times what the part was actually worth. So I printed out my findings and went to the store to pick up my computer unannounced. I showed the owner how upset I was that they were trying to charge me so much for a part that only costs $29.95. The owner then tried to tell me how I was wrong for even thinking that, because their prices were "matched with apple's repair for the genius bar" and that if I bought that part and brought it in they would replace it, but if it went wrong it would be all my fault. Finally they brought out my computer and I opened it, and they told me it would be $50 for "diagnostics and testing". I told them how the hell did you do any diagnostics and testing when my computer was completely dead because they didn't charge the battery when they had it for 2 weeks, and because they never opened it. They told me I had to pay the $50 because I had signed the paperwork contractually binding me to it, and I wouldn't be able to take my old computer home with me. In summary: Do not take your computer to Austin MacWorks, they are untrustworthy and they will completely screw you over with pricing. They have lost my business, and I will tell everyone I know not to go there. If you're going to buy a new computer the Apple Store is the way to go, and they will hook you up with whatever it is that you need to purchase. read more

Not only did they give me a price that was way less expensive than taking it to Apple, they had it turned around in 24 hours. I didn't experience the best service here. It wasn't that the staff was cold or disinterested, but after they held my computer for much longer than expected (and it was only for a video card replacement) I found the computer's screen was black when I turned it on (didn't they test that beforehand?) When I spoke to the staff, they told me to bring it back in (keep in mind this is a 27-inch monitor and it SUCKS taking that thing to and from the car) but only after he gets back from lunch... in 2 hours. Having not worked for the past 3 days because my computer is being worked on, I found that quite rude. Since it is technically their fault that it's not working at all now, I would've expected him to tell me he would fix the problem immediately. I won't be coming back here, unfortunately. read more

I previously wrote a review about Austin MacWorks. This is an update. I am extremely pleased with the work they did on my 2008 iMac. Great price, and Robert was especially helpful. I would definitely go back to them. The down side is that it does take a very long time to even get the diagnostic part done, and they could use some kind of management. When I hadn't heard anything for over 2 weeks, I called and the 2 people I talked to were very confused. They couldn't find me or my Mac in the system (frightening), when they finally figured it out, they gave me a lower price of what the cost would be than it actually was. I was told I would get a phone call when the diagnostic was done, but nobody called. It seems like it would benefit them to have someone in charge of customer service. read more

I went to Austin MacWorks first and regret the waste of $53 & a week of my life. My MacBook Air got soaked by a spilled water bottle 2 weeks ago. If you have liquid damage in or around Austin, TX, go directly to Longhorn Mac Repair in Pflugerville. I found it using the quote function on Yelp and noticed another unsatisfied Austin MacWorks customer went there as well for a second opinion & exemplary service. It's $75 if they can't fix it with a cleaning and $150 if they can, and they can clean the computer immediately, important for corrosive substances. The Apple Store can take days to get an appointment & automatically charges $750 no matter what, basically the price of a new logic board, and outsources the work to an authorized dealer like Austin MacWorks. Austin MacWorks takes your laptop immediately but takes a week to even look at it, terrible for corrosion, and doesn't have the customer service skill to even update you or tell you your laptop is ready. They may also argue with you about whether or not you left your charger with them. Also, Austin MacWorks charges $50 just to diagnose that your laptop needs a cleaning, no shit. Yes, you come in saying my laptop got wet and the screen is flickering and pay $50 +tax for them to tell you the obvious, "there is water damage." Then they say it's $90 if the cleaning works and $450 if it doesn't. Yes, 3x the amount Longhorn Mac Repair charges. Now I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers. I'm a former systems engineer and enterprise architect who has been in tech for 14 years and first started coding 18 years ago. I know if you spill liquid on a laptop, especially if there are problems, get it cleaned immediately with the right tools. I know $450 costs more than the blue book price of my laptop $200, so logically it's better to buy a new one. However, Austin MacWorks also resells laptops. They don't resell at the $200 bluebook of my make and model but at $800. And they want to sell you a new or used MacBook to replace your old one. So they wait a week until the damage to the laptop is worse and charge the customer $50 to state the obvious. Then if there is corrosion or damage they charge the customer another $90 for the failed cleaning and hopefully a comparable laptop at maybe $800. If the cleaning works and fixes the liquid damage, they still make another $450 off the sucker. You can make a lot of profit by legally running a business in a dishonest way. Longhorn Mac Repair took 24 hours to fix my MacBook Air and only made $150, but they'll be my first stop for tech help from here on out. Shame on Austin MacWorks for preying on people. read more

The replacement was fast and the owners and staff were very friendly and I am really appreciative of the great service I received. I had the good fortune of finding AMW while shopping for my new MacBook Pro. I wanted and needed help with migrating my data, installing Parallels to run Windows and a separate Itunes problem. They charge the same or less than Best Buy or Apple but deliver great value besides great service. They were smart, efficient and friendly. They took care of everything and I left with a fully functioning machine. They listen to what you need and provide the proper custom solution (that is not always spending more). It was probably my best computer related experience ever. I worked with John and he could not have been nicer. I would not consider making a move related to Apple products without their input. These gentlemen know their business and customer service. I walked into the store and was helped immediately. I use VMware Fusion to run a virtual Windows machine and had a Windows issue. Srini and John were able to diagnose the problem and fix it in a short amount of time. I paid the priority service fee, and it was well worth it as they were able to fix the problem, make suggestions for upgrading my Windows software, and get the computer back to me in a matter of a few hours. Their knowledge and expertise, as well as customer service, friendliness, rates, and business sense are terrific. read more

I left my iMac at this store for repair, there was a colored spinning wheel on screen that would not quit & I could not use the computer. 2 days later I was called by their tech who asked me questions about what I did to the computer, such as bumping it while it was turned on. It's a desktop, it wasn't bumped or jarred, I don't move it around. The price was very high to change the hard drive b/c cost was added to back it up. I refused to pay the high cost & took it to Apple at the Domain whose first diagnostic test at the Genius Bar said the problem was not the h.d., then the 'Genius' ran a 2nd test that showed it was the hard drive; 2 different outcomes. I took my computer home to think about my options & turned it on & voila, there was no more colored spinning wheel & all my data was there, no loss of files & it worked beautifully. Makes you wonder about those diagnostic tests that always show a new hard drive is needed !! This would have been the 3rd h.d. in 6 years. Apple has not impressed me & I question their test results & the high cost of both computers & repair. read more

I'm sure everyone's experience will be different. Folks have good days, bad days, but this was my day and my experience. Apple store in the Domain referred me here but I had actually already reached out for them to discuss my issues. My hard drive crashed and I had not backed up in a few months (I know, I know). They told me it could be 2 days or 2 weeks so I prepped myself for at least 2 weeks. They salvaged the info in less than 2 days. I brought them another lap top on a Friday and had my computer back by Saturday evening. Service was great, price was fine by me considering I would have lost everything. Price to pay for not backing up. Had they not been able to salvage it my experience may have been different, but it wasn't. So ya'll get 5 stars. Service, response, result, all the best i could have hoped for. Thank you for the work and the communication. I can't imagine how much this crew gets hounded by other folks trying to salvage computers. Some customer service is harder than others and in their case I'm sure folks really ride these guys something fierce. Just remember, be nice, be respectful, and they will do everything they can to fix your computer. MOST IMPORTANTLY, remember they didn't build or break your computer. Shit happens. read more

I don't think these guys know how to talk to actual humans. I brought my computer in for troubleshooting and asked how the process worked. They were never very transparent with their process; all they said was that it depends on what's wrong with the computer. They never told me about the $50 service fee up front. They asked me what I spilled on the computer and if I dropped it. After I told them I did neither of those things, they then ran some tests (again without communicating what exactly they were doing) and kept the computer overnight. The next day they told me it was a temperature sensor problem and it would cost $600 to replace. I decided to get a second opinion. When I took the computer to the apple store they found the temperature sensor was not the problem but there were other issues. The apple store quoted me $400 for repair but fixed it for free since my Applecare had just expired a couple months before. I would NEVER recommend Austin MacWorks to a friend or an enemy. read more

OMG, This place has the worst customer service of any store I have ever been in, in the World! Right up to and including the Owner, Mr. Tatineni. I don't think they are accustomed to talking with humans. I took my well beyond warranty, custom built Mac Pro Tower to them to install a new WiFi card. Simple operation. Push it in, screw it down, attach 3 antennas. Two months later, with no calls, no updates, I finally called to nag. (yes I have another computer to use) After a call back, I was told that they got the wifi card installed, but that the video card is not working. "What? It was working when I unplugged it to bring it to the shop!" So today I went to pick it up and pay my bill. The worker who I had talked with on the phone would greet not me, not look at me or even talk while punching the keys on their computer for over a minute. During that awkward time an older fellow walked by and I asked him if he is the owner. He said, yes, one of them. I asked him why my computer is in worse shape now than when I brought it in. His answer was that the video card was not supported by Apple. ??? I asked him if the machine boots and he said yes, but you cannot see anything on the screen because the video card is dead. DUH. I then told him that I have been a business owner in Austin for 21 years and I have never seen such surly and rude service as I have experienced in his store. His answer was "Well I've been in business for 25 years, so I have you beat" and walked off. ??? Really? Unbelievable. My advice to anyone with an ailing, out of warranty Apple product in Austin, TAKE IT ANYWHERE BUT AUSTIN MACWORKS. Blow it up, run it over with your truck, set it on fire, buy a new device, anything... just stay as far away from these guys as you can.
