What differentiates them from most BBQ in KC and alot of BBQ nationwide is their really sandwich focused. While they bake their cornbread daily their rolls are not house made, but when the best burgers are served on Martin's potato rolls that shouldn't matter. What matters is the meats. I don't like how they have a Carolina style sandwich. KC BBQ should be good enough to stand on it's own and not need other regions to lean on or prop themselves up. Texas toast, Carolina should be whole hog and chopped. I mainly come for the sandwichs and ribs as I prefer Texas Brisket and Turkey and a sourthern style smoked ham. First off, look for the green colored gas station and the line out the door. It's casual trying to hide it's a little fancier than it should be. Unlike most BBQ their sides aren't anything to rave about, but they are large. I like their dirty rice the most. Their regular hog heaven and a Z Man give you the jist of the sandwiches, large, meaty, smokey, but too sweet for my tastes. I like their rib rinner half slab from the meatier short end. Burnt ends are available most of the time, but not always. Decor has character, service is fast and friendly, very common you'll find entertaining conversation with patrons in line with you. Prices are excellent. Portions are excellent. I like the tenderness of their brisket, but find they don't wrap during the stall with foil and i'm more of a butcher paper and tallow guy myself. Burnt ends are tacky and sweet, too sweet and you lose beef flavor. Their sausages are dense and have snap and chew, held a little too hot and render a bit much in waiting. I know I may be nitpicking, but I used to compete in BBQ and feel that what they are doing in Texas is really pushing the envelope and while I appreciate what the Stehney's are doing here, as it's one of the best in KC, I don't think of Joe's as the destinational place it once was.

This location was in a strip mall with a parking lot. It's exactly what you would expect of an old school barbecue joint. It gives a little bit of a diner feel meets cafeteria. You order your food at the counter and pay. Your order is given to you on a tray and then you go and find a seat. There is a waitress there to take drink orders and anything else you might need. The waitress was very kind and hospitable. I ordered the barbecue chicken and you get to choose from different types of sauces. I had the sweet barbecue sauce and for my sides I had coleslaw and potato salad. The starting portions for the sides are really small, but the protein portions are quite large. I really enjoyed my potato salad and coleslaw. If I wasn't staying at a hotel, I would have ordered more to go. The chicken I had was juicy and well seasoned. It was a little on the saltier side than I would've liked, but once I added the sweet barbecue sauce, it helped to balance out the flavor. You were really able to taste the smokiness of the meat and you can't leave there without the smoky scent getting into your clothing. You really felt like you were at a barbecue.

The gal working the counter (yelling) would only let me order what was on the board. I wanted to taste the burnt ends, brisket, sausage, and chicken or turkey. Oh well.. they wouldn't do that. I ended up ordering the burnt end sandwich and discarding the large bun. Pretty good rating on the burnt ends. Tasty. I then had to order the sliced beef sandwich - and discarded the bun again. The beef didn't seem to have any smoke. 2.5* rating. Neat bbq location off of downtown. OK experience with the meat. I now understand yelling at the customers for their orders is their thing. Fine. Didn't work for me.

First off, the place is huge. Despite that, it's not too loud, and it's not overwhelming. I really enjoyed the meal here with 4 other business associates. Service was spot on. Really. Our waiter made us feel like we were the most important people in the place. I can't say enough about how important that is, but I'm sure most of you understand that already! I had the brisket and burnt tips, and they were amazing. As a side, the fries were also fantastic, and the barbecue sauce was superb. I don't normally go overboard about dining at a restaurant, but this place deserves every good review it gets. I cannot recommend Jack Stack highly enough. I only wish I didn't live 4 hours away - I'd look forward to going here one a much more regular basis!
