Turkey Bacon Ranch Sub
Joe R.

My favorite sandwich is the Turkey Bacon Ranch sub. A bag of chips, my favorite drink, and a chocolate chip cookie make it complete. You may need to wait a few more minutes to get your sandwich, but it's worth the wait. This location has a pretty cool mural on the wall of Royals stadium along with a couple of famous baseball players squirting the water cannons at the Raytown Blue Jays and Cardinals mascots. There are other firehouse artifacts on the walls for good conversation pieces.

My medium Jamaican jerk turkey sandwich on wheat ($5.55) tasted great, with a good amount of meat, and plenty of fresh toppings. The service was relatively fast, but otherwise just okay, while the dining area was clean and nice, with a firehouse theme. A good variety of sauces with heat levels marked 1-10 were available to spice thing up. Very nice.

Fast warm and filling sandwiches. Great for lunch! And feel safe while you eat local fire and police are supported by Firehouse and frequent this location. Service is quick so we can all get back to work. Fresh soft breads and fixins make this a good sammy. They dress the sandwiches but you can spice them up with BBQ sauce, and a variety of hot sauces if you like. Not into a sandwich I recommend their salads as a great too.

Always good food and great service. Wish there was one closer to home. Nothing I don't like otherwise.

But this place exceeded my expectations. I will definitely back to try every dish, but for the first go around, I had the goldilox and it will be hard not to just order that every time I return (But for my Yelp community, of course I will switch it up). Smoked salmon with a nice slab of cream cheese, complimented perfectly by cucumber and onion - you just can't go wrong. To top it off, the bagel-like bread (what they're known for) with the crispy shell and soft inside was everything I ever wanted and more. Service was quick - no complaints there. While you're waiting in line, they offer cute Bay Boy postcards (for free!) so between the souvenir and the food, there's no way you'll forget about them.

As luck would have it, I had to run an errand near the area and my decision was made. First off, the entrance isn't where you'd think it would be. The order window was closed and I noticed people going up to the deck to get in, so up I headed. The place was actually spacious and comfortable, it has a Caribbean vibe to it. After much consternation, I figured I'd make it tough on them and opted for the Reuben. As some somebody who has had many Reubens at the place where they were invented, Omaha's Blackstone Hotel, I can be a tough judge. This is definitely the best place to get one in KC, so I know that I'll be back for more. I even liked the bread that they used, it set it apart from other sammiches. And the service was great, so I'll be back.

For a brief moment, I thought I heard music. There was a DJ, actually. But that's not how I remember it. I remember the bus. Yellow and black, impossible not to notice. Anime artwork stretched across the side. Go Chew Burger. At the window, someone was waiting who was every bit as inviting as the aroma coming out of that heavenly little bus. I started looking over the menu, and there, winking at me, was the GOCHEW Burger. They mentioned the double patty. I hesitated. "We won't tell anybody." Two patties it was. They also talked me through the kimchi: fresh or charred. They gave me enough information to make me feel like I was making all the decisions. Double patty. Charred kimchi. Loaded fries. I was all in. While I waited, I did what anyone with an infatuation does: research. I learned about Joohae "Chewy" Yoon and what she's trying to do with GOCHEW--take Korean flavors and put them into foods people already know. Burgers. Fries. Familiar food carrying something new. Then the buzzer went off. Time for our first date. No chairs. No tables. Things were getting a little awkward, so we went back to the car. The fries had lost their crispness to the sauces and steam, but I didn't care. The Korean BBQ sauce was sweet and savory, the gochujang brought mild heat, the creamy lime sauce cut through it all, and the bright green chives pulled everything together. Incredible. But the burger? Perfectly crisped edges. Juicy, hot beef. Melted cheese. Charred kimchi bringing sweetness and acidity. Three sauces that somehow never fought for attention. And the bun had a serious responsibility. Two patties. Cheese. Kimchi. Three sauces. Everything depended on it. Spider-Man protects New York and everyone who depends on him. This bun had the same problem. With great power comes great responsibility. And it held. Mostly. The attraction was still there. The infatuation was still there. But they had become something else entirely. Love. This wasn't just a good burger. This is the best smash burger I've had in Kansas City. Chewy set out to make people fall in love with Korean food by putting those flavors into things they already know. I think she got me.

Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and our food came out quickly. I ordered a turkey club while my dad got one as well, and unfortunately we both had the same issue. The turkey was on the dry side, and it was sliced much thicker than I personally prefer. I tend to like a thinner deli-style sliced turkey, so it just wasn't my favorite sandwich. My mom ordered one of the salads though, and honestly it looked better than my sandwich. It was loaded with fresh toppings, and she said the ranch was excellent. If I come back, I'd probably skip the sandwich altogether and give one of the salads a try. Overall, I can definitely appreciate what they're going for. The prices are fantastic, honestly unheard of in present day, and that's the main reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3. It's a true local spot, and I wouldn't mind giving it another chance to try something different from the menu.
