Great place for large groups looking for something different on a night out! The medium room was perfect for a group of 9-10 people. Room was clean, A/C was working perfectly, and staff here is super friendly. The karaoke system is pretty intuitive; you search by artist, and scroll through the song list. All the songs we wanted were in the system, and you can queue up as many songs as you want, so load up on what you want and sing to your heart's content! August Box is also BYOB/ Bring your own food. This was honestly one of the most fun nights we had in Phoenix. The staff was really nice and we loved the BYOB concept. No more paying for $15 shots and watered down cocktails! Rooms were Insta-worthy and super clean. We were one of the last ones in the place, so the guy working gave us a quick tour, at our request hahaha. There was a 20-person room with two stripper poles???? Amazing. My only advice would be to actually watch the intro video, as there are a lot of Asian songs on the system, which makes it a little tough to maneuver. I had great lots of fun with a few friends, de-stressing after finals, but wasn't satisfied with the service. The mic broke down and the system had terrible sound quality - there was so much static. When we notified the front cashier, she took a long time to switch out the mic's and didn't offer to put us in another room. Then, the second mic malfunctioned too. While she was fixing the systems in our room, we stood there awkwardly and watched our karaoke time sadly tick tok down. The system had a lot of Asian and American songs, but it was a bit weird that they used Chinese renditions of American songs for background music. For example, the only 'Imagine' by John Lennon that was available was a remake from a Chinese singing show, which was just plain weird to sing to. It wasn't just that one song that was the Chinese rendition; rather, there were many other songs that were like that. It wasn't a huge problem, but I was hoping for the original versions to sing to. Personally, I don't know if I would go back again, but this is the only place that I know of so far in Phoenix that has karaoke without an open-bar style. It was much more comfortable singing in a private room with a karaoke system - I wouldn't dare, with my voice, to very awkwardly sing in front of a crowd. Also, the private rooms had cool displays, which was pretty nice. Some suggestions: 1) Bring cash because there's a minimum $25 charge for cards, although August Karaoke has an ATM machine inside the store that you could use (I think there was a charge of $2) 2) Sometimes, there are Groupons so keep an eye out for that! Bottom line: A-okay; it was fun but I wish they had better service, less malfunctioning devices, and more song choices. read more

I am super confused with what I remember - maybe it's nostalgia glasses for something else. August used to be my hands down favorite place for karaoke in AZ, but small changes or disappointments here and there stacked up to make everything worse. Super easy to make a reservation - we can do it over the phone. For a friend's birthday, we called a couple days in advance for their largest room - 12 people. For almost 3 hours and 15 people, came out to about $10/person. For a prorated rate, not bad! I don't remember what old system they had before, but whatever they changed to is launch Windows 10 - looks pretty but buggy as hell. So much harder to find anything. This is one of the few places I've seen without the iPad or remote (not a deal breaker). To search, you gotta type the first letter of every word (New Kids On The Block = NKOTB). But most the time it's not even alphabetized. And when you find your artist, super obvious picks might not even be there, like All Star for Smash Mouth. Really cool selection for Chinese, Japanese and other Asian language songs though. Not sure what happened to the sound system - it actually sounds kind of worse. Three years ago belting "My Heart Will Go On" was hilarious. This time it just sounded kind of staticky and hurt my ears (no regrets though). Though the first two hours were great, our tail end picks showed us their system is straight up broken. Three songs in a row our lyrics were desynced to the music video. We ended on Maroon 5's "This Love". Music video was synced to the lyrics, but the instrumental was lagging FIVE BEATS. ON 4/4 TIME. WHY IS IT SUCH AN AWKWARD SPACE BEHIND!?!?!? Everything else before then was bearable, but that ending just made it super sad. Hope they can fix their issues before/if we stop by again. I went here for my birthday and we reserved the MVP room (up to 30 people). The staff here are so chill. If you know what you're doing, this place can be hands down the cheapest and most fun you can have in a 2-3 hour window. First: This place is BYOB. So you're welcome to bring in your own alcohol. So I would recommend (depending on your group size) bringing a couple coolers of alcohol. Second: make sure you don't forget your plastic cups or whatever you're using to make drinks. Don't forget whatever snacks you may want to snack on while singing. Third: If you're doing a large group like mine, I would bring some towels like we did. Someone will inevitably spill or knock over a drink. They will charge a cleaning fee if you don't make sure the room is semi clean. Lastly: They have multiple mics in the MVP room so many people can sing at once. They have a projector screen so you can see the video/lyrics. You can adjust the sound inside the room to perfectly tune it to how you want your voice projected. The reason for the one missing star is because of the Song Catalog. I feel like it's lacking some of the more classic American songs, and they have a huge catalog of korean/chinese type songs. And because of the huge catalog of Asian songs, it makes it a little difficult to sift through to find the American/English songs. They do have an app you can download that will sync up with your room and you can queue songs that way. Very helpful. We rented the room for approx 2 hours on a Saturday night (9-11pm) but then extended it for an extra hour until midnight. There is a music licensing fee that's also added on so the final total came to be about $480. That's for 3 hours of entertainment and unlimited alcohol (that everyone brought) for 25 people. So approx $20 per person. What a deal! read more

Total bait & switch. They conveniently don't list their prices on their site. Upon contacting them they said there'd be a 52$ deposit for a medium sized room, and to arrange a call for further scheduling. They called and said there'd be an additional 72$ per hour for the room with no food or alcohol included, you have to bring your own. In a capitalistic society this is why competition is necessary, or businesses like this will become too greedy with outrageous pricing. The music selection is very limited, equipment not up to par, microphones aren't the best quality, you're really just paying for sitting in a small decorated room while spending most of the time browsing the music selection available. This was my first time here after seeing this place so many times passing by the Phoenix Rock Gym. My friends wanted to do something fun and I was so surprised that it was close to ASU where we all attend school. Swin, was our host and he was a great host. He accommodated to our needs and was super nice to us. He taught us how to use the karaoke machine and explained the prices very well. He also let us see the rooms before we got to choose. The price is based off the size of the room and by the hour of how long you stay. We got the medium size room for $55/hr split between 6 people. The room was spacious, had colorful lights and the music was very clear with no audio problems. I was surprised how many options of artists and songs they had. They had music ranging from English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean! They even had some newer songs that played on the radio. They offer drinks to order and if you check in on yelp they will give you a free water bottle! Over all I had a great experience! I will definitely come here for special events or just something to do late at night. You can bring in your own food and drinks and they do open till 4am so that's a plus! read more

Your first impression is always your last one. As you walk into this place, you feel like you're walking into Caesar's Palace. This place is so well decorated: Granite front desk top, Shiny marbles all extend all the way to the ceiling. The chandeliers look so delicate that makes you think they're stolen from Louvre. After visiting the website the thought crosses your mind as if this will be a good idea for a non Korean, but I figure this is Phoenix, I love karaoke and so do my friends, I have nothing to lose so "Buy Now!" it is. You have to reserve the room in advance which I did online and set everything up though a couple emails (they were very responsive). Note: This place caters to ASU students pretty hard core, so it's fairly empty in the Summer and you might be able to get away with not reserving. At this point I'm the only one who has dealt with the biz, so we pull up with all our friends and the place looks closed. We walk in and its completely empty but an employee walks out, confirms my name and takes us to a room. He gives me a quick "how to" on the machine and off we go. ***Here are 3 main reasons why you should try this place, over Guitar Hero at home***** 1. You can bring your own liquor. We just bought the sodas from them and mixed it all ourselves. 2. They have tambourines and maracas in the room. Adds to the fun for people who are not singing, and when was the last time you used a tambourine or maraca?? 3. The experience. I don't know of any strictly karaoke places in the valley. (Hubby and I and my other friend from Hong Kong went yesterday :p) In short: - Nice equipment (really nice sound system and touch screen song selection) - Real MTV from the original singers/artists on the background instead of blue screen with white words - A huge selection of Asian songs (they are new enough for me!)! Just like back in Hong Kong!! Most songs are from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China. They have some Japanese, Korean and English songs too, but not a lot :p - Three of us have our own spacious room to sing for privacy, just like in Hong Kong! - The place is really clean and neat! :D It's not like those fancy bars and lounges with fancy decorations and interior design, but it serves the purpose of singing songs so it's good enough for me! - The most amazing thing is the price!! First review in a while, here goes. Went for a friend's birthday (well admittedly, I did plan it since I know my friends are a bunch of karaoke-loving Asians). I've been wanting to come here ever since it opened, since this is the first ktv-style karaoke place probably in the whole state! I think there is another one opening in downtown Chandler though. We went on a quiet Wednesday afternoon during our spring break, and we were the only group during happy hour. They were running an anniversary special (through the end of March) of $10 a person for 5 hours during happy hour, but their regular prices are not bad at all. They had a fairly large selection of English songs, which is great since even though we're Asian, we're super white-washed. We were able to sing and sing until our throats were sore and our tummies wanted food; we didn't even get through everything on our playlist. Had a blast and hope to be back! read more

So there's this karaoke rent-a-room and sing with friends type place that's been around forever - everywhere in the world it seems but just recently started up here. Or at least as far as I'm concerned - I'm always late to such parties. There's this place called August Karaoke Box (八月恋歌) in Tempe on the south side of University between McClintock and Rural - more specifically in the mall at University @ Dorsey that has businesses like Republic Ramen. You basically pass Republic Ramen and go south into the parking lot and it's in the same building on the east side of the building. There's also a rock climbing place to the south so it can be busy and the parking situation can vary. So... I've been here a few times with friends and there are things I like about it and things that I am not particularly pleased with. I'll break it down for y'all... Pros: 1) During the weekdays of Monday through Thursday before 8 pm you pay 15 bucks an hour. That works out pretty cheap if you come with friends. It's usually not crowded in the afternoons at all. 2) You get a private room so nobody sees you singing except for your friends if you're the shy type and are mortified about the idea of singing in front of people. This also allows you to try out songs you normally wouldn't dare without any embarassment when the song becomes a trainwreck. 3) These rooms allow you to have a private party for as long as you like and are willing to pay for. Cons: 1) Catalog - I understand that the reason this KTV place even exists is the Chinese speaking clientele - which is why I wasn't too surprised when the receipt I got after paying was almost all in Chinese characters. That said they could use a much bigger English language artist catalog. It's funny that the Rod Stewart and Bee Gees song catalogs are much bigger than the Beatles catalog and there isn't any Rolling Stones at all that I could find. Nor could I find any Eagles. Or Led Zeppelin. Been here a few times and I can see the novelty fading pretty quickly after going through all the available songs that I like/know. It might be my lack of Karaoke GUI navigation skills but I searched by artist and looked at all the offerings for each particular artist. What's weird is you can type in songs by name and they sometimes come up even if the artist isn't listed in the artists section. Oh well. 2) The way the lyrics show up on the screen are usually two lines at a time. During faster paced songs the transitioning of the lyrics to the next pair of lyrics can sometimes be slow enough that you can be caught waiting/wondering what the rest of the lyrics are (if you don't know the song too well). Most karaoke bar type setups have a full screen of lyrics at a time to avoid that. 3) The backing tracks/video. So some of the songs have the actual music video or live video of the artists playing their songs. Some of them have some weird Chinese videos of women walking through the street but having nothing to do at all with the song itself. Awkward. But some of the audio tracks sound like MIDI - like you're listening to an old school arcade game rendition of that song. Fortunately not all songs are like that. If you're a karaoke fan this might appeal to you to try at least once anyway. As always, your mileage may vary. read more
