I usually come to this place for lunch and it's $20 per person all you can eat. The atmosphere and cleanliness is very nice considering it's in Chinatown and there's usually no wait time. I'd definitely recommend trying their dim sum (siu mai, hai gau etc..) and their sushi's. There's a wide variety of fried foods like tempura, noodles (udon) and desserts (ice cream, deep fried banana). There's also a wide variety of alcohol (corona, sake and wines). Having been here many times, I've never been disappointed in the service until this past Sunday. Coming in at 7pm, there was a lineup of four groups ahead of us - which is very understandable, but there wasn't anyone to manage the line and take names down. My friend stood for about 10 minutes before she got one of the servers to put our name on the list, but she noted that the restaurant was half empty with many tables available. The manager seated two groups ahead of us, offering the larger group free alcohol. He then turned to the rest of us and told us they were at full capacity and would no longer be taking tables. The couple in front of us told him they were on the list, to which he responded "oh yes, I remember you, you're on the house". When he turned to us, we also said we were on the list and he argued with us until we pointed our names out, then he rudely seated us. The remaining people behind us who didn't put their names down were told to leave - even though the restaurant was literally half empty. We were so confused with his attitude and demeanor, but also so happy that we were able to get a table. We then asked one of the servers if they ran out of food or were closing early, but she didn't know of anything. Throughout our meal, we noticed the manager shaking his head and scolding the servers on the floor, which is a big no-no for retail in my opinion. We also noticed that all the new customers coming in were being seated, so there was really no reason for the manager to turn anyone away, adding to our confusion again. Overall, the food was good and table service was speedy, but the entire experience was a roller coaster of emotions and confusion. AYCE sushi & dim sum why not?! I really enjoy how they have sashmi as part of the ayce as well. I think that is hard to come by since most are rolls that you would find in Chicago. I've been to enough AYCE places that they all blend in after a while. August 8 actually brings something new to the table with blow torched aburi sushi!! I really enjoyed their selection under their usual sushi menu, the last several options are blow torched and I liked every one of them. Maki rolls are well made with plenty of filling and flavour. The dimsum options are also fun to explore just as an alternative for the palate. For dessert, I would recommend the sesame ball for dessert which has a surprise centre! However, dim sum items were very, very tiny--but that's okay since its AYCE and you can always order more if you want to. We were strolling around Spadina looking for a place to eat on a windy winter Saturday when we stumbled upon this restaurant when we crossed the street from Augusta ave. To our surprise, we didn't find ourselves eating at the same dim sum place we usually go to on weekends. We decided to be a little bit adventurous and give other restaurants a try. August 8 is not that bad honestly, I actually liked the salmon taco and eel taco. For the dim sum, well, no one has ever beaten dim sum king for its authenticity for a lower price. I would say this is not bad but there's definitely something to improve on. Some things to improve on: 1. The app is not that friendly - you can look at AYCE app that they use for ordering system; they can better represent the food and it's very user friendly. You also have to think about the people who are not as tech savvy and people who easily gets frustrated with bugs - UX is the key here 2. More selections on rolls and sushi but given that this is fairly new, I would say they are still in the discovery phase on which food to cater 3. Dim sum - some of our orders are dry and it's really not something that I would want to devour, good thing we don't like wasting food so we just ate them regardless Kudos on: 1. STAFF - this restaurant has nice staff, regardless of how busy weekend lunch time is they are very attentive to their customer's needs 2. August 8 is probably going to be my new staple AYCE sushi place in Toronto. It has more variety than Fushimi, plus dim sum! For an AYCE restaurant, the food is on the higher end, but don't expect anything phenomenal. The establishment is clean and the service is good. :) Sashimi: fresh and pretty good for AYCE. Enoki, beef ribs, teriyakis: tasty, highly recommended. Eel sushi: can't go wrong with unagi. Special rolls: The rainbow roll and black dragon are pretty good. Dim sum: I actually really like the dim sum here. The serving sizes are perfect (I was expecting giant Siu Mai like the ones you'd get at an actual dim sum restaurant, but they came in bite-sized pieces). Tataki: disappointing. I am a very big fan of sushi and dim sum, so coming here and having both made the experience even better. My bf and I ate the AYCE dinner here and was given an iPad to choose from as their menu. I usually go to the Brampton location but after the latest visit and the review I have given, I have decided to try out the downtown location as it is the newest location. We have decided to come during lunchtime. The downtown location is definitely smaller than the Brampton location, less seating but spacious. It is still the same menu and also using an ipad to order. But definitely, the food are better than the Brampton location. The sushi is fresher tasting, it is definitely not day-old kind of taste. The sushi rice is cold as they should be. The teppanyaki items, especially the beef skewers are my boyfriend and my favourite dish. The meat is extremely tender, did not stick to the skewer (easy to take out), and seasoned well. The dim sums are cooked through and through, each basket of dim sum they serve are HOT HOT HOT! I extremely like the service they provide. They are so fast! You order from the ipad and almost not even 5 mins, you get your food. What I would say is that, we have a few slower orders but that's because we have ordered a lot of soup filled dumplings and they can't keep up with us (sorry, but it's my bf's favourite food in the entire world!). They also ask if we want our soft drinks to be refilled without us asking. Always walking around to remove any empty dishes from tables. The price is definitely a little bit pricey for a lunch AYCE but considering the amount of food you can get as well as the service? I will say it's worth it. P.S students!!! Good quality AYCE sushi is really hard to find, and I guess August 8 wasn't my favorite joint. They separate Lunch and Dinner prices, and sashimi was only part of dinner, but you can order it anyway during lunch hours if you just pay $30 instead. Service was okay, the place was quite empty when we went in but everything was rather slow-paced. I like the iPad ordering system but our orders got mixed up a lot, we always got either too much food or too little at a time. I think the meat and dim sum was pretty average, and the rolls weren't my favorite. I did, however, REALLY LIKE the SASHIMI! It wasn't very big but it did taste fresh and delicious. I love white tuna so it's nice to find a place where you can have unlimited portions. Give this place a chance. Honestly I've always been skeptical about AYCE sushi- how can a business sustain itself and provide good sushi when it's all you can eat? Costs must be cut somewhere right? So when I heard about dim sum AND sushi, I was even more skeptical. But then I read the reviews here and figured it was worth a shot - especially since my cravings for AYCE was pretty strong. Upon walking into the place, I already got good vibes- but of course, a nice place doesn't mean good food. It was only until the sushi was brought to our table that I was sold. The sushi was fresh and very similar to the pictures on the iPad. There was a wide enough selection of nigari, teppanyaki, hand rolls, special rolls, etc. that I think there is something for everyone. In terms of the dim sum, everything was to standard. Nothing amazing but nothing disappointing- except maybe the custard bun. I'm not convinced they make the dim sum in-house because it looked and tasted very frozen fresh, if you know what I mean. The iPad made things very quick. From placing an order to eating it took no more than 5-10 min. Waiters were also fast to collect plates and even gave a tutorial on how to order from the iPad. Granted, I also visited with my boyfriend on a Monday during lunch so it wasn't busy at all. A few logistics- sashimi is only available in the evening. However, they do allow you to have sashimi in your AYCE for lunch- you just have to pay the dinner price. For $18.99, I definitely would come back, but I can't justify paying $29.99 for dinner (even with sashimi). Would I come again? Probably. But only under specific circumstances- the $18.99 deal for lunch on Monday-Thursday. So I guess you could say I enjoyed the experience, but didn't love it. read more

Quality AYCE sushi and dim sum, with an iPad ordering system and fast and attentive service. I visited this location on a late Sunday afternoon, and was seated right away. Luckily the lunch AYCE menu ran until about 3:30pm. 4/5 - Venue 5/5 - Food 4/5 - Overall Venue: The location is clean and well kept, with obvious signs of renovation, just don't expect a modern or high end experience. The seating is spacious, with booth seats and tables alike. There is also a small bar available, with a selection of Canadian classics, and imports like various sakes or Chinese beers. The only downside is that the tile floors really pool up the winter snow and slush, and can lead to a pretty dirty floor. Food: The sushi here will NOT disappoint. The fish is fresh, and an obvious step up from your typical AYCE sushi joint. The salmon is buttery and tender, and the butterfish is very smooth as well. None of the tough fish that you can sometimes get at AYCE sushi. The dim sum is not bad as well, though I do suspect that not everything is fresh or made in-house. The tempura is light and crisp, and the sushi rolls are well made, and presentation is not poor. Come for the fish, it's worth it. Overall: One unique aspect is that the ordering system is through an iPad, so there's no need to flag down a waiter, or to repeat a long list of items to them. All our food that was ordered arrived in a timely fashion, though I expect times to be slower during peak hours. The waiter was very accommodating for our vegan friend, and the kitchen happily accepted sushi that incorrectly had mayo in it, and remade it to order. This location for August 8 is located on the east side of Spadina near the south east corner at Baldwin. Smack down in the middle of Chinatown's main street between two foodie communities (Baldwin Village and Kensington Market) lies an "all you can eat" restaurant for sushi and dim sum. While our group ended up going for lunch the dim sum menu is not as diverse as a full blown dim sum menu and the lunch menu to me seems to be really scaled back from previous visits to August 8 in Brampton. Simply put there's a lot of menu items missing from the lunch menu that really make the meal seem lacking. While our group was on the lunch menu, you don't really see what's missing until you go to use the iPad for ordering and notice how many options are simply missing. The headers are there but going into certain options the menu is simply blank. The kind of menu items I'm specifically missing would be things like kalbi, sashimi (all), tataki and other things like torched nigiri etc. Simply put there's not enough good options for lunch to make it worth while. I'm not sure how much it is for the dinner menu at this location and it was a holiday (Thanksgiving Monday) but it really seemed to be lacking compared to dinner. For the most part most decent rolls, dim sum dumplings, tempura, nigiri sushi (tuna, salmon, eel, surf clam, etc) were available. The fried chicken wings and katsu which were ordered in the beginning didn't come until practically the end. Hand rolls and "tacos" were also available but in the future for best bang for the buck I'd have to say pay the extra for the dinner menu to be unlocked or don't even bother. When all the good items are not available at that point it's not really worth it. I went to this location of August 8 over the thanksgiving weekend (just a bit of a late review, haha) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of the fish! I had previously been to the Hamilton location and found myself underwhelmed, but figured that as this location was in downtown Toronto, it HAD to be better. Thankfully, I was right! I was happy to see red tuna on the menu, and the variety of dimsum is great for someone just trying to fill their craving for siu mai and the like! My friends and I are going back this weekend, and I am very excited! Since it opened this year, I have been at this location 3 times. I have frequented at the other locations when I was in Burglinton/Hamilton area. This is my favourite AYCE sushi place with consistent fish quality. This is the only place where I do not find bones in my sashimi. The selection is varied. It seems their menu changes slightly from time to time. For example, they used to offer red bean ice cream and now they have removed and replaced it with chocolate ice cream. However, the service is a hit and miss. There were times I would ask for water refills or more serviettes and they would forget about them. They don't charge extra if you don't finish your order. It looks like the reviews here are a hit or miss here, but I had a pleasant experience. After hearing there was a dim sum/sushi ayce place in the city, I was excited to try this place out! Came here on a weeknight for a friend's birthday which wasn't empty but not fully busy. They have an iPad ordering system which seems to be a standard nowadays but it makes for easy ordering. The decor is modern and chic. I really enjoyed the portion sizes here and the selection of dim sum and sushi. The dim sum obviously isn't as high quality as it would be a regular Chinese restaurant, but I thought it was worth it for what it was. I enjoyed the curried squid, chicken feet, siu mai and shrimp dumpling (the wrapping on the shrimp dumpling was very aesthetic!) On to the sushi, the sashimi seemed fresh with a nice thick enough slice to enjoy. Go for all the torched stuff on the menu -- torched shrimp, torched salmon, torched dragon roll... I'm a sucker for aburi sushi and this wasn't bad at all for ayce. There were some items that were a miss like the salmon tataki and beef tataki... I would avoid it as it wasn't done well. It had a weird sauce and the beef seemed too cooked and not sour enough. Some of the desserts were also hit or miss, but the custard bun was a nice touch, I enjoyed the tiramisu served in a shot glass, along with a mango ice cream to finish the night. I had the green tea ice cream, and mango pudding as well, but it wasn't memorable enough to be reordered. I found that it's difficult to find a good ayce sushi downtown Toronto, and almost no ayce dim sum anywhere. They were pretty fast when it came to serving me the food I ordered. I have no complaints on that, but midway when eating I felt a weird sensation in my stomach. I chose to ignore it and proceeded to eat, one of the server's probably noticed the way I was acting and kept asking if I was okay (good service on his part). I didn't even eat a lot, had their Friday special (Sapporo on tap), had my dessert, and after paying went straight to the bathroom due to some discomfort. This was a really nice surprise, considering it was AYCE. Trying to stay on budget, I tend to go for places like Spring Sushi, Aji Sai, 168 Sushi or Kyoto House for AYCE sushi. Having said that, it was really nice to be greeted with a smile for a change at August 8's chinatown location on Spadina. I'm aware they have another location in Hamilton, but I'm not sure if they have another one in Ontario. The interior was quite nice - very modern and sleek. It was a Saturday night but the line to be seated wasn't very long, maybe 5 minutes or so. They used iPad technology as their menu and ordering system so that was great. I can't remember if we had to wait long for the food, but I do remember it all being quite fresh, well-made and flavourful. Their tempura was very crispy and not stale at all and their sashimi seemed and tasted fresh, all surefire signs of quality AYCE food! I was pleasantly surprised since a lot of the AYCE sushi restaurants I've been to have a lot of the time served food that tasted like it had been prepared a while ago/stale/rubbery. The service was consistently nice which, along with the food, also stood out to me. The dessert menu included your typical ice cream flavours - green tea, mango, chocolate, along with tiramisu, deep fried banana, mango pudding, etc etc. I was really happy to find they had deep fried sesame balls and sponge cake though! All in all, a really good experience and I'd say it's worth trying. What ruined the experience was when the manager told us that we had been sitting at the table for 2 hours and he needed the table now. However, we had only been sitting for barely 60 minutes and were eating dessert. The time limit was 90 minutes which we were aware of, but the manager was persistent we had been there for 2 hours. We wanted one bill and were using cash to get the 10% student discount. The bill was given to us on one receipt with two totals, meaning we got taxed twice when we had asked for one total bill to be taxed once. I came here with my friend for lunch because we both realized it had been way too long since we had AYCE sushi, and I was in the mood for some dim sum as well. Ordering through the tablet is very efficient, and the food comes out quickly. The quality of the food, though, is not so great. The plating could also be a bit more efficient. My friend ordered 1 piece of various fried and hot dishes, which came out a lot more quickly than the sushi. Unfortunately, many of the 1 piece orders came with their own dipping sauces, and I had to scramble to eat and clear them off to make room on the table for the other dishes. When the sushi finally came, I was no longer hungry. I couldn't enjoy the sushi because the fish was not fresh. The fried cutlets were also incredibly dry. The tacos were delightful. Give this place 2.5/5 stars. My friends really enjoyed the one in Hamilton and I was excited to try August 8 for the first time in Toronto. We went here for lunch and they had around 15 dim sum choices and around 15 types of sushi to choose from. Their sushi was decent, the spicy salmon, spicy scallop, and spicy butterfish was ok. Was impressed to find aki (squid sushi) here for ayce. The dim sum, tempura, etc was average. With so many ayce choices in Toronto, I don't think August 8 is worth coming back to read more

It's a great all you can eat place with lots of yummy foods. Last time I went the service was really prompt and friendly as well. My biggest complaint is that the sushi items are mostly my least favourite (all the rolls particularly). I came here for dinner on a weekday and the place was really empty. I was a bit worried that the food would not be good, but it was better than expected. Everything came out quickly and my group did not have to wait long between orders for our food to come out, like what many ayce sushi places do. Presentation of the food was nice and the servers were all very friendly and attentive. read more
