Everything was so delicious we were all trying each others food at the table. The service was a bit slow, but two 10 party groups on a Tuesday can't be normal and there was only one waitress. Back then you'd order the schnitzel with white gravy and mushrooms, and pan fried potatoes, and it filled your whole plate. It even came with a buttery roll and a cucumber dill salad or spatzle. Came here the other day with some friends to try some schnitzel and spatzle along with some drinks. I ordered the gypsy schnitzel and german potato salad. We tried to order the beer to split amongst 3 people but they gave us all 1 L each, no complaints there since they had Weihenstephaner Hefeweissber on draft which is one of my favorites. My friends got the fried macaroni and we split a chocolate cake at the end German Salad (4/5): nice little sampling plate of different sauerkrauts, the potato salad, and the iceberg lettuce. The potato salad is nice since unlike American salads, its not drenched in cream sauce and is mildly tart. The potatos are soft and theres a hint of green onion flavor. Fried mac and cheese (2.5/5): decent crispy batter but the inside was pretty much kraft mac and cheese Gypsy schnitzel with Spatzle (4/5): pretty large fried pork schnitzel with an orange mushroomy/peppery sauce. The schnitzel was pretty tender and the batter remained decently crispy throughout the meal. The spatzle also was given with decent sized portions and cooked pretty al dente. Kind of a standard egg noodle but decent with the gypsy schnitzel sauce. Chocolate cake (3/5): the chocolate cake was nice that it wasn't too sweet but a bit on the smaller size. It wasn't particularly different than regular chocolate cakes I've had from grocery stores or other eateries. Overall the portions are solid and in my limited experience it's a good representation of German food. They have the same selection of German/Swiss/Austrian dishes as you would find in restaurants in those countries, all well prepared. We moved away around the same time the original owner passed away and yesterday was our first trip back. Adolf, the original owner's family continues to run the restaurant. No visible changes since our last visit. Ambiance remains the same, very casual and a bit of a diner with a German theme. It is a good option for German in the CSRA. No complaints with their cucumber salad, schnitzel, bratwurst, kraut and spatzle. I do have a beef with their potato salad, I prefer it to be room temperature/warm with bacon...it is still good if you haven't had it another way. Wow. I should have turned around immediately when I realized there was only 1 other table occupied in the restaurant at 6pm on a Sunday night. The woman who sat us was just barely above welcoming and just shy of hostile. That was the second red flag that we ignored. The reviews we saw in a taste of Augusta magazine were good and the restaurant had been in business since 2004. We wanted German food and had committed. Let's go over the pro's. The restaurant was quiet and the atmosphere was relaxed and clean. We didn't have to wait for a table. The portions were huge........ yeah. That's the good. Now on to the meh. The food was just barely above edible. When we started to eat I began to question our safety. It didn't taste spoiled it just had a very distinct feeling of uncaring. Like this is the absolute least we can do and that's all the effort we are going to put forth. It was overly expensive. I ordered the Jagerschnitzel and a glass of water and my husband ordered a diet soda and the sample platter that came with Bratwurst, spatzle, potato salad and schnitzel. The potato salad was icebox cold and watery. The main flavor seemed to be cold grainy water. The schnitzel was a giant seasoned-less shake and bake pork chop that had been frozen. The brat was a hot dog and the spatzle was flour, water and eggs. Nothing had seasoning, not even salt or pepper. The jagerschnitzle was fried potatoes and giant pounded flat, breaded and deep fried pork strip that tasted as if it had been frozen. The potatoes were cubed and dropped into a deep fryer. The dish was then covered with what tasted like jarred brown gravy. I....... Well....what can you say. This culinary delight of a dinner cost us, with tip $65 At this point we did have a different young lady who waited on us. She seemed nice enough and was studying for a test. She asked if we enjoyed it and needed boxes. The answer was no and no. To be fair, we got exactly what we ordered. There's a reason this place is dead at dinner time. The service is absolutely awful. They have 1 person waiting tables and she's very rude. She was very nice and friendly to the other tables but very curt with me. I ordered a beer and it took 10 minutes to get. Mind you there were 2 other tables that had already ordered in the place besides me. Two other tables sat down after me and got their drinks and salads before I got my beer. I love the decor and ambiance of Augsburg Haus as it reminds me of some of the cozy family owned restaurants I went to in Germany. We arrived at 5:00 on Super Bowl Sunday and it was almost empty. They did a steady business in takeout orders but we were part of a handful of guests. There were signs on the table's announcing that new appetizers were available. Our waitress was quick to bring us waters and a menu. I think in years past they used to serve yummy brotchen with butter but we didn't get any this time. Our friend Sal ordered beef with spaetzle, mom got jagerschnitzel with roasted potatoes and I got the dinner bratwurst with mashed potatoes and goulash gravy and sauerkraut. Our meals included a salad choice and mom and Sal got the German cucumber while I got the small German salad which is a sampling of four salad: the cucumber, German potato salad, and purple and white cabbage salads. All the salads were fresh and tasty. I'm always surprised by the huge portions of the entrees. It would be easy to share but they do charge a fee to split an entree. My bratwurst were perfect, the mashed potatoes were the chunky kind that I prefer. The sauerkraut was cooked well but extremely salty. Mom said her schnitzel was a bit overcooked but still good. Sal's beef and spaetzle was tender and she thought the spaetzle was very good. We all had to get to go boxes since we only finished half of our dinners. They do offer several German beers and wines. We were too full to consider dessert. Our total bill was about $85 before the tip and included one beer. There aren't too many choices in the area for German food so there isn't much to compare it to but I'd say Augsburg Haus does capable, if not inspired, German cuisine. read more

We ordered many different meals from Gypsy's schnitzel to the steak over spaetzle great. To bratwurst was excellent along with the boots of beer. Our waitress was very helpful being she was really the only one serving taking orders but her and another gentleman from the kitchen brought the food out as it was ready which we like so the meals were hot and fresh. Called ahead to see if they have outdoor seating available since we were on the road with our dog. Staff wasn't friendly over the phone, and it didn't get much better once we arrived. As a German native, I expected great food and was disappointed. The cucumber salad was lacking the typical dill flavor, it was bland at best. The schnitzel were huge, but really too big for a single meal. Half the size (and price) would have still been a generous portion. I was part of a large group for lunch today. They did not have enough servers. No refills on drinks were offered, not even Water. I ordered the potato soup. Which should have been named basil soup had a small amount of grated potatoes in green water. I will not get that again if I ever return. The mashed potatoes and the fried pork chops looked good. I will return Again to give them another chance before I mark them off my list. The evening meals are very expensive. I did enjoy looking at all the German decorations. This place took me on a trip back to Germany. This was our second time coming. We came on Sunday for lunch. We sat all the way in the back. I love all the memorabilia all over the place. Of course we ordered some German beers. We also ordered 2 schnitzels. This time we both ordered the Augsburg special (Swiss & sauerkraut topped) and got spaetzle on the side with gravy. All meals come with a side. Got the German potato salad (this was perfect). I swapped my side so I could get the spaetzle with gravy (you have to ask for it) So buttery!
