There aren't paintings on the walls nor clothes on the tables. There's nothing special about the decorations at Atxondo, but don't underestimate them. They make up for it with their food. A Spanish Basque Country restaurant, their menu is more affordable compared to many restaurants in D.C. and pack their dishes full of flavor. Everything we ordered, we enjoyed. Our favorites: Manchego cheeseburger, roasted Brussel sprouts, scallops on a bed of squid ink rice, and the Basque cheesecake. The drinks are solid too. The $10 red sangria was how I want all sangria to taste. The guava margarita was excellent too! The staff are so kind, attentive, and personable. I can't recommend this place enough!

What a hidden gem....like ... seriously hidden...waaaaaay up 14th Street. In a easy to miss strip of shops in an easy to miss part of DC is a little Tapas Bar serving massive flavors at shockingly good prices. I went with 4 friends, all over 6 foot 2, so we were able to taste half of the menu. Everything we had was stand out good, came out fast and full of flavor. This is now my favorite Spanish restaurant in DC (thank God, cause I was really missing Estadio the other day). The dishes I'll ask for on my death bed are: the scallops over black rice (scrumptious and perfectly cooked scallops resting on the most delicious and most rice....like....the rice might out shine the scallops it's that good); the steak (PERFECTLY cooked and impossibly tender....what the hell did they do in that kitchen!!!!!! We almost ordered another); and the seafood paella (just...get...it.... period)!! Fast and friendly service, solid cocktails and of course sangria. I don't want to gate keep. This place is a hot! Go keep it in business!!!!!

Oh my goodness, if in DC go here! This truly is a gem. Small sized restaurant that cooks each dish to perfection. Our chicken and octopus was as tender as it comes and my husband's Manchego cheeseburger was packed full of flavor with a light heat. I am a foodie, my husband not as much. But he was begging to come back while visiting on vacation. This never happens! Staff was attentive and friendly! Plus pricing was affordable for the area.

Nice food spot in north dc. Went during happy hour. Service was quick and attentive. Staff gave excellent recommendations from the menu. The interior was small and cute. Only con is the lack of parking nearby.

Stopped in recently for a meal on the patio and it was good, not great. Some nice dishes, some ok. Service was good. Didn't do any drinks. For food, the highlights were: crispy potatoes (bravas), pan con tomate (flavor was amazing, bread was soggy), mushrooms garlic wine sauce with an egg (great flavor but very liquidy/hard to share). We also did the gambas (delicious sauce but the shrimp were overcooked), the octopus (nicely cooked but just not a favorite), manchego cheesebuger (just ok), and the tortilla (not runny inside, no onions, i'd call it a potato omelet). the coconut flan dessert was nice, a touch sweet but not overly so. Overall enjoyed, it's not difficult to get into so that's nice but it's a bit of a trek for me so not sure how frequently I'd go as there weren't many truly standout dishes

Amazing food and lovely service. This place is a sleeper and it won't be long before Tom Sietsema 'discovers' it and you have to wait to get in.

Cam here with friends. We had heard good things and wanted to check it out. Spanish food from the basque region is very good as I have been there and have first hand experience. In the north they call them "pinchos" instead of "tapas." And of course most of the menu is naturally gluten free. We started with the cheese platter which was excellent and I a martini made with Spanish Gin. It was nice and served in a fun glass. In the end we ended having the manchego cheeseburger (no bun for me). I know, not the most Spanish item on the menu. But it was very good. The place is simple and their is actually more seating outside than inside. The prices are reasonable. I would come again if I am in the neighborhood (which is likely since my friends live a block away), but this is not something that I would recommend driving a long distance for. In other words a great neighborhood restaurant.

Atxondo was such a lovely surprise. We are visiting DC for the weekend for dance and felt like we were in the middle of nowhere when we saw this place. It was a very chill neighborhood for a Saturday afternoon, and we're so glad we took a chance. The patatas bravas were amaaaaazing, and I was pleasantly surprised that they chose to fuse a curry sauce with their bok choi, rice, and salmon. A smart combination that cuts through to the palate. The smoothie and sangria were refreshing, and I was happy that I came during their afternoon happy hour. Their staff is friendly and the restaurant features an inviting environment. Check them out next time you're passing by; I highly recommend!

Easily one of our favorite Spanish spots in the city. Extremely friendly service and such high high quality food. Went for a friends birthday and had so many dishes - the standout was the whole rock fish - wow! Don't sleep on this gem on upper 14th for amazing food and overall impeccable experience.

Kale Salad, Black Rice, Seared Scallops, and Pineapple Margarita...Delicious!!!

Unique Spanish food experience in DC outside of the typical Jose Andres restaurants. A hole in the wall I would come to again!

From the out side it look dark and dreary but inside its bright and airy. Very approps to the DC vibe. You'll be greated and seated with that DC flair. The Market went viral so they were short on Lobster meat. Delivery is daily and we got there too early. So we settled on some Salmon Jerk Thai fried rice and Crab Eggrolls. The flavor explosion was massive. The Salmon was thoughly cooked and moist with great flavor. The rice exquisitely seasoned. It was really really good but not Thai flavored. Its not spicey nor was there that lime that Thai food has. Yet, it was delicious non the less. The Eggrolls were bomb. Fully creamy with a great chrisp. I know creamy is weird right? It's totally worked. Theres an electric lemonade and watermelon drink special that's vibrant and delicious. It sets the mood of the evening. Its definitely worth a try. I mean DC sea food scene needed a little invigorating, right!

Honest review: iight so boom, I came in with my girl and my lil one because a couple weeks prior my cousin had their crab egg rolls and I was like ok they decent af. Service: Service was trash, plain and simple y'all need at least 3-4 folks on the floor. Your bartenders should only really have to deal with The Bar. I also do like the fact that I had to ask her multiple times for miscellaneous items and never received them. You need to increase the alcohol variety. Y'all also either need to pick an option and stick with it, options are: Silver or Plasticware Which neither were provided upon being seated. Remember this is constructive criticism. Food: food did take forever to get to the table as they forgot our buffalo shrimp but was satisfied with the crab egg rolls. Y'all are good in the flavor department , I demolished that snapper. But: the rice was too oily, also and my son's garlic noodles were not al den te. (Undercooked) Closer: my girl recorded her part so there's no reason to lie on my rise. But open eating our leftovers while work we both came across little pieces of glass in the rice and the garlic noodles. I originally had crunched and swallowed about 2 pieces thinking it was apart of the food. I don't want anything in return or taking off because y'all take that in advance automatically when dining in. (Also yall should get rid of that 20% service charge). Just wanted to inform you of my experience at your establishment. Thank you.

Dinner at San Matteo, yes please and thank you!…read more Good food and service was memorable adding San Matteo to the list of favorites. The front patio is cute and a nice spot to sit on a nice day. We entered the restaurant, pasted the bar and made our way to the back. We were pleasantly surprised with a nice outdoor feeling to dine at. We were immediately greeted by our waiter, given water and warm bread with olive oil. To kick off our meal everyone had different ideas of what they were craving so we went with three starters. PROSCIUTTO E MOZZARELLA for one. It that had the usual meat and cheese board with nuts, mini bread crackers and jam. I liked how pistachio pieces were found in the meats and cheese. [5/5] BEEF CARPACCIO which is a family favorite of ours was a must try. The tender slices of beef with arugula, with sliced capers and celery. It reminded us of our trips to Italy. [5/5] FRITTO MISTO came next. This mixed lite battered bowl of seafood goodness with a little spice delight. It had calamari, fish, shrimp, garlic, zucchini and chilies. I really liked how the batter was lite which says a lot because I love really crispy anything. [ 5/5] On to the main courses, we proceeded with different pasta noodle dishes. BUCATINI BOLOGNESE one of my favorite pasta noodles was my selection. The noodles were al dente and the sauce and meat were excellent. [5/5] PAPPARDELLE CINGHIALE was my husband's pick. The pappardelle noodles were al dente and nicely accompanied the meat with the tasty sauce. Topped with ricotta; the dish was full of flavor. [5/5] CHICKEN ALFREDO was the last pick. Not an authentic Italian dish; however, hats off to the chef for making this for our picky eater in the family. The sauce was creamy and delicious. Noodles were cooked perfectly. [5/5] Surprisingly we had just enough room for a sweet ending - an Affogato. Whoaza! The espresso was yummy; put some hair on our picky eater's chest. It had a hint of licorice flavor that was unique. Let's not forget the San Matteo Spritz. Smoky and highly enjoyable. I loved it and will order again when I return. Overall, San Matteo hit all the check boxes for our lovely family dinner. The staff were attentive and never left us wanting more water, food or waiting long. The food was tasty. It seems upscale with a casual feel. Some people were dressed for date night while others were having a casual meal with family or friends. The seating options of areas were all unique in its own way. Front patio for a nice day, from the front indoor dining area for maybe a more intimate feel, bar and table top area for a drink and appetizer going solo or with a friend; and lastly the back dining area for a a bigger group to enjoy your meal. Mixing up the dining options that suits you. I'll be back to try other dishes.
