I can't stop gushing about this store. It absolutely destroys the competition. The nearby Zia's prices are so bloated, I can't afford to shop there anymore. Asylum is a MUCH better alternative. First of all, if you shopped at Rockzone, rest easy. This store has nothing to do with that rat hole. The manager from Rockzone, Scott, opened Asylum after they went under. There is no carryover stock that I could find, and trust me... that's a bonus. What is here is mind blowing. Zia's, Revolver, WHATEVER... there is no way they could match this store's selection. They have everything from John Denver, to Motorhead. There is a wide variety of genres, and none of them are lacking. I'm a regular to record stores, and there is a LOT to love about this one. Scott is a great manager, he's always giving good advice. He always makes sure there is a lot of new stock moving in every week, so I make a point of it to stop by as much as I can. The prices are very fair, and cut into their competition quite easily. I don't see myself making a drive downtown to visit Stinkweeds any time soon... This is also THE store to go to for autographs, and other memorabilia. The Zia's by ASU charges EXORBITANT prices for autographed merch, and I'm positive some of it was faked. I asked Scott about a signed Alice Cooper top hat's authenticity. He showed me a picture of Alice signing it right next to him. More than enough proof for me. There are two listening stations on either end of the store, so you don't have to wait to try your records out. There is also a lot of cool swords and stuff on display. Lots of awesome dragon statues and stuff. Makes the place feel like a genuine, old school record store. Needless to say, it's highly preferable to the pens and candy you find at Zia's. There is an enormous selection of dvd's, tapes, and CDs. Too much for me to go through in one trip, but I really liked what I saw. To take in everything it has to offer, you will need to make between 4-6 trips. They also have a lot of meet n' greets. I got to meet L.A. Guns the other week just by chance. They were hanging out on the blue couch in the office. (The office has to coolest door I have ever seen, by the way). In short, if you want to shop at a real record store, shop here. read more

I used to love this store. I would come in here all the time before he moved locations. Awesome collection of funko pops, records, merch, etc. However the issue is is that the owner jacks up the price on everything. Everything comes from his "personal collection" which basically means anything can be sold for way too much money. He often sells things like funko pops in a pair which isn't uncommon with pops however it can be excessive when it comes to entire sets. I love paying local shops more money and would rather shop local to keep those businesses open. I don't mind spending a bit more if I know the money is going to a bad ass, customer friendly place. It's gotten to the point where the pieces are so crazy over priced, with horrible condescending customer service that I don't feel great about coming here. If you're interested in a specific pop you don't see, he will literally ask how much you're willing to pay just to see how much money he can get out of you. He will laugh in your face if you mishear a price. The owner doesn't wear a mask and I'm pretty sure he thinks covid isn't real. I don't usually shop for records but he watches customers like a hawk to make sure they put things back exactly perfect and complains if you accidentally get finger prints on the pops (not what happened to me but to a family member). It just sucks when you feel like you have to walk on eggshells when you're in there. It's just been too many things over the course of several different trips and I just don't want to feel taken advantage of. I don't really care to hear his shitty explanation of why he does the things he does. He often claps back when people complain about his store and tells them they're making fake reviews. I recently visited Asylum Records with high hopes of discovering hidden gems in their extensive collection. However, my experience was marred by the owner's gruff demeanor, which set the tone for the entire visit. Upon expressing my interest in rock records, I was met with a dismissive remark that left me disheartened: "I have 1000 rock records, and you couldn't find one?!"Not only was the owner's attitude unwelcoming, but the pricing of the records added insult to injury. Every record on display was exorbitantly overpriced, with markups ranging from $10 to an astonishing $50 above reasonable market rates. This blatant exploitation of customers' enthusiasm for music is disappointing and reflects a lack of respect for the very community that sustains record stores like Asylum.In addition to the inflated prices, the overall atmosphere of the store felt more like a confrontation than a celebration of music. A record store should be a haven for music lovers, fostering a sense of community and shared passion. Unfortunately, Asylum Records fell short of this expectation, leaving me with a bitter taste and a strong aversion to returning.I would caution fellow music enthusiasts to approach Asylum Records with tempered expectations and a prepared wallet, as the experience may not align with the joyous exploration one typically associates with browsing through a record store. First off this place is amazing, if you're into music, pop culture, funko pops, and just plain awesome collectibles. Stop here! Scott is amazing, he has one if not the best selection of vinyl records in the east valley that is out there. He has celebs stop by and do signings all the time, he looks scary but it a big ol' teddy bear (don't let the tattoos scare ya) The store is very well stocked, its design is immaculate, and the shop Cat (of the feline kind) is adorable. I highly recommend this place as not only is it a nerd/pop culture heaven but the owner is willing to go above and beyond to get you an item if he can, prime example, SDCC funko pops, or event funko pops, autographed records, instruments, dvd's, comics etc. He either has it, or will get it. I only started collecting vinyl records about three years ago. I used to go to Rockzone and this is when first time I met Scott as the manager there. Fast forward to 2013 and my lil family and I can't get enough of Scott's new store Asylum Records. We have found pretty hard to find records there. Almost all of Public Enemy's whole album collection which was in mint condition! I have to say that hands down their hip hop selection is the best in the Phoenix area! But I honestly don't think Asylum meant to target this group because their rock selection is even better! I can spend hours here and have! They have two listening areas where the customer can sample the product before they purchase your goods. So, as an avid vinyl junkie I would recommend checking this place out! read more

well hello to all that reads this I was on a vacation not by choice though but I was in the market to rebuild my album collections since mine got clucked off while I was on that vacation so I went on a shopping day and ive got to say that asylum records has everything going for them they have a huge selection of all different types of music they also have some of the most wanted and desired collectables anything from jewelry to figurines also the staff are very nice and there is some good music playing as well as videos ive been to several stores and this is the best one due to the fact of selection,size of place,decor! so in saying all of this ill be going back there and only there I suggest this place to all! read more

Asylum Records is an awesome record and collectibles shop that, in many ways reminds me of the record shops while growing up in the 80's...with amazing Rock memorabilia decorating a good majority of it. My family and I love spending time finding gems all throughout this store. The experience is made even better with helpful and friendly shop owner, Scott. Scott has great stories, is incredibly knowledgeable and always makes me and my family feel welcome....so much so, that for my son's 12th birthday he chose to go to Asylum Records over having a birthday party. My local record store closed and I was directed to a new store. Asylum Records. WOW! What an AWESOME store! You are drawn to the place by the outside but once you get in the doors you are never gonna want to leave. I could spend all day here. This is a REAL record store! So much cool stuff to see. They have it ALL. From vinyl records to cd's, cassettes, dvd's, concert vhs, music memorabilia, and SO much more. Very clean and spacious. and they have 2 listening stations. The guy behind the counter is the owner and is very helpful and is happy to share stories about his touring days with bands. I love this store. Here is everything you need to know about Asylum Records: 1: Their selection is excellent, and they can cater to just about anyone's taste. 2: The store is badass. Adorned by everything from autographed posters, to swords and dragon. 3: The staff (two people) are excellent. They will find you whatever you need, and give excellent recommendations. 4: The pricing structure is spot on. I haven't seen anything I would consider to be overpriced in my multiple stops to this store. My dad and I met the manager, Scott, through Rockzone Records. I recently visited Asylum Records in Tempe and instantly felt like I'd found a music lover's paradise. The store has a vast selection of vinyl records and CDs across genres, but it really shines in the heavier stuff--metal, punk, rare collector LPs. My life is rock n roll and 80's metal and this place delivered selection and the rare finds you will never see elsewhere!
