My friend and I were very excited to try this place, as we live in the North End and frequent many of the restaurants in this group. The service was beyond horrible. We ordered an app and entree at the same time, the app came 55 minutes later. The entree then came about 20 minutes later. After walking around Faneuil Hall all afternoon for Christmas lighting, my partner and I got the hunger bug. Rather than tempting into the Quincy market food lines, we opted to walk over to North end. My partner found Assaggio because it was listed as a romantic, quaint, intimate restaurant that was good for dates. While I've known my partner for almost a year, he continues to surprise me with these romantic spots. I agree that the ambience in this restaurant was a girl's dream. The service was amazing, the white linen tables, lighting, soft music, and wall of windows facing out into a quieter part of North end made me swoon. The food, however, was not what I quite expected for the price. I loved the espresso martini. It was also $17. We had a flat bread margarita pizza for sharing. I think the bread was delicious and basil was a great touch, but the sauce seemed anti-climatic. We also had the eggplant lasagna. Although it was an appetizer, the portion was the same size as the meat-based lasagna. We were able to share this as a couple and still take the food home as leftovers! The eggplant lasagna was hearty with lots of eggplant, but again the sauce was not our favorite. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't fantastic. The sauce was in the middle for us both. It had a very natural smooth taste to it. Perhaps we were hoping for more garlic or Italian seasoning to make the flavor pop more. I also wonder, if we had got plated dinner meals, if the food would have been the wow factor we were hoping for. We saw the table next to us have their plates dinner meals delivered in stainless steel skillets. Interesting. We were able to walk in and get a table on a Saturday night where everywhere else was turning people away. Saved my wife and I as we were running out of options with our kids in tow. While relatively fancy, they were very accommodating for our children. It was honestly among the best Italian dinners we've ever had and we have been coming to the North End ever since we lived in the city 15 years ago. We started with the meatball and ricotta appetizer (excellent) and we knew we were in for a great meal when we first tasted their sauce! My kids also went through two helpings of bread before the meal came. My wife had a fabulous ravioli dish and I had the lasagna. Typical lasagna portion, but sitting in an awesome cream sauce. While we loved our meals, here was the best part of this restaurant for two tired parents: Our kids are rather picky and they were very accommodating - we were looking for just a basic spaghetti and meatballs for one and spaghetti with butter for the other PITA child... Best spaghetti dinner ever... But what was very telling was just how good their homemade pastas are when you tried it with nothing but butter. After eating ALL of both of our meals my wife and I polished off the kids' as well! Oh yeah - very nice wine selection as well. The atmosphere and the decor is beautiful, we had to wait a extra 5 minutes to get are table because it was extremely busy. The manager (Corey Ciminoo) was very accommodating and helpful we had a allergy in are party which he made sure that we were talking care of . I had the mussels for a appetizer , for main course I had the salmon, it was cooked to perfection! Then we all ordered the home made cannoli (to die for!!) the server Tony was very attentive. My fiance and I live in the North End. We have been to almost every restaurant. This is one of the worst experiences we have had. We got seated in the basement, at the bottom of a staircase. Staff were running up and down the stairs the entire night. We could not even have a conversation. This table was also right next to 2 closets and extra chairs. Great Italian just off Hanover. It's one of the collection owned by the same company. Noisy and a little tight. Majority of the entrees are served in "all-clad" type pans, which offers a unique presentation. The combo provides that lively ambiance. The Veal Osso Bucco was fork tender, falling off the bone. I came here during restaurant week with myself and 5 other friends. We had reservations for 7:30 and when we arrived about 5 minutes early they were still setting up our table. The restaurant is pretty small, so our group was taking up most of the bar area while we waited to be seated. We were sat at about 7:40, but then around 7:50 they decided to move us again. The second table was definitely more spacious, but by the time we were settled it was a half hour past our reservation. We received our Dine Out Boston menus and noticed there were 3 courses, which is standard, but the way it was presented online made it look like you were getting 4. For an appetizer I got the ceasar salad which was your average salad but loaded with dressing. Two of my friends got the caprese & prosciutto, but both were missing the prosciutto. My other three friends got the Calamari & Fritto Misto and said they got only one piece of each type of seafood with an overload of onion rings. For dinner the waitress told us that the mushroom risotto had been replaced with a seafood risotto that contained crab, salmon, sword fish and lobster. Sounds tempting, but don't be fooled. Three of my friends ordered this, and none of them enjoyed it. It had an overly fishy flavor and gave the impression that restaurant changed the menu to unload a surplus of seafood before it went bad. The risotto itself was also subpar, definitely would not recommend. Two of my friends got the Chicken Supreme which was underwhelming as a "stuffed" dish and was incredibly dry. I had the Ravioli Caprese, which was delicious, but the portion was small (3 raviolis) For dessert I ordered a cannoli. It was stuffed with a lemon cream which I was not aware of. I am not a huge lemon fan and had I known, I would have ordered something else. The tiramisu was delicious. When we got the check, we had ordered a bottle of Chianti for $38 but were charged $40. Last night was my third time eating at this restaurant over the years & it did not disappoint. This was by far the best Italian meal and experience that I've had anywhere in the North End. As we enter the restaurant a couple coming out said wow that was amazing & they were right. We didn't have a reservation and the host was very gracious and sat us at a table for two, near the bar. The restaurant is clean and attractive with a high end feeling. Our waiter was absolutely fantastic... Maybe one of the best servers that I've ever. He was very attentive, knowledgeable with the menu, friendly and excited about the product that he was serving. We started with a Glass of riesling and Cabernet both delicious. The bread and olive oil with whole olives was scrumptious. We Moved on to the caprese salad which had vine ripened tomatoes & the best buffalo mozzarella ever! We were the family of 12! It was a really special evening - what a wonderful night for my parents' 59th wedding anniversary - thanks to Carlo, Corey, Sergio and the rest of the staff! They took such good care of our table. We shared some of their wonderful bruschetta appetizers, the burrata salad and even shared the special risotto of the day before our entrees - all of them were excellent!! They CHARGED me for ICE in my drink! Are you kidding?? I've traveled all over the country for work and have NEVER been charged for ice! It may sound trivial, but if they feel they can get away with this, what else will they start charging for? Silverware?? Again, I realize how minor this is, but it really ended up souring the mode of the evening. The poorest and slowest service (to the point of being nonexistent) I have ever endured. I had to ask five (yes 5) times for ice and lemon for the water. We asked three times for bread which arrived shortly after receiving our entrees. I never received the grated cheese which was offered, but with no wait staff taking notice, I finally dug in while the meal was warm. We had a 7:15 reservation and were begging to pay and leave at 10:30. We were seated upstairs, which tends to be noisier due to the fact that the seating areas are larger. The dining area is very attractive and bright. It would have been fine had the music not been periodically cranked up to override the diners voices, just exacerbating the noise level. It was also distracting that the lighting was being played with on several occasions. I ordered the chicken parmigiana and was sorely disappointed with the quality. The chicken was a bit underdone (how is that even possible?) and I was fighting through grizzle and soggy breading. I live down the street from the North End and know many fine dining establishments so I will never step foot again in this one. This is my 4th time here but the first since it closed and reopened a couple of years ago. It's very nice inside now, but I have to say I preferred it the way it was. It lost its old school charm in some ways.. Pros- Lovely little place, very cozy and romantic, awesome for a date night. The staff and service here has always been fantastic, and I've never had a meal I regretted ordering. Tonight I had the short ribs and I'm just going to say that they were one of the best meals I've ever had anywhere. I cannot imagine it being prepared or cooked any more perfectly. Flavors were great and texture was incredible.. The Tuna tartar app was lovely as well and the complimentary lemon cello shots are a generous touch post meal. Cons- I think it's just a bit over priced. There is a ton of competition in the North End obviously and I think this spot is on the pricey end of things. Typically you get more than you can eat in the N.E. But this isn't the case here. The portions are fine for a meal and I'm a guy who can eat, but you won't be bringing home leftover. For the money I think it's a tad stingy. Secondly they have a truly spectacular wine list, with 100s of offerings if you want a bottle. Ranging from 40 to 1800 dollars but they're by the glass list is insufficient for the level of food. It's really almost embarrassingly small. I closing, you won't be disappointed with your meal quality or the atmosphere here. You probably won't find a better staff in the area either. These folks take pride in what the bring to your table. Just don't expect to have leftovers and don't fret over choosing a glass of wine from an extensive list.. I do recommend you try it, it's a positive experience in a sea of choices. read more

We were greeted by a hostess and an older gentleman. The older gentleman showed us to a table by the window. We were served right away! We had the mussels for an an appetizer, lamb chops and seafood risotto for entrees! All of it was extremely DELICIOUS and flavorful! No complaints at all. There's one word to describe this recent addition to the North End dining scene. The word is "superb." The decor and the ambience are top notch, and the cuisine is outstanding. The menu draws from the native cuisine of Positano, and we sampled everything from the Carbonara to a combination of shrimp, scallops, calamari, and swordfish. The subtle touches such as a candle on every white linen-clothed table and the limoncello served with dessert -- a mouth-watering lemon cake with fresh whipped cream -- make this restaurant one to which we're looking forward to visiting in the very near future. Assagio is a great restaurant in the North End and I would highly recommend it with the only drawback being poor service. Four of us came here once and another time I came on a date night. Both times the food was great but the service was below par. To start the service here sucks! To start our waitress was wearing jeans and a low cut tank top which is a little bit risque, which I don't really mind but would definitely be a no-no from my parents in an older generation. Our waitress asked us if we wanted bread? Hmmmmm.... I don't know we're about to spend $200 on dinner for 4. Of course, we want bread! We wondered if there was some type of surcharge but thankfully there wasn't. Afterward one of my buddies checked in on yelp for a free shot of limoncello. She brought four for the table which we initially thought was out of courtesy (we did not all want limoncello, only he did) but thinking it was courteous, we then drank the shots only to find them on the bill. We complained to the owner later, who graciously apologized for the bad service and removed the charge and comp'd us some apps. Good on the owner, terrible on the waitress. The 2nd time we went the service was just as blase but at least this waiter knew that it is customary at a restaurant that serves bread to bring bread. I am a bit picky but from a restaurant in the North End, with so much competition, it is obnoxious to flag down a waiter and not have them be able to describe basic aspects of the menu. The appetizers here are great and almost meals in their own right. I tried the sausage and broccoli rabe which was delicious. One of the best apps I've ever had. So well cooked and well presented. We also had the charcuterie plate which was absolutely delicious. Such fresh and delicious meats and such a large portion. Truly a picturesque dish. But once again, the waitress misidentified multiple types of meat and did not really explain what they were making us hesitant to order in the first place. We also tried some of the calamari which was outstanding and well-breaded but not overwhelming. The food here is delicious! First time here, I tried the braised short rib which was well cooked and served with two good sides of mash potatoes and spinach. The spinach was especially good and the mash was okay but a little buttery. The second time we ordered some carbonara which was absolutely amazing and a huge portion served in a pan. Some may not like the presentation in a pan but I thought it was charming and conveyed freshness. The food is delicious in all phases and the portions are huge and will leave you full. read more
