We were on a road trip when our alternator died. Bad news. It really is the worst breaking down on a road trip--you need to get fixed fast and get going and you are at the mercy of the mechanic you end up at. And there is always the fear that the mechanic will take advantage of you in your situation, getting you to pay way more than is necessary because you are without normal options. We were going to get towed to a local dealership but the towing guy suggested Ashton. After checking out the reviews here we decided to take a chance. Absolutely a great decision. Steve was kind, speedy, and incredibly fair. More than fair, really. He gave us a great deal that the dealership admitted being unable to match (both with regard to timeframe and cost). Long story short, we were on our way again with just a few hours' delay. Really incredible. You can't say much better about a mechanic than "he got me back on the road fast with a great deal when I was stuck and at his mercy". We were truly fortunate to come across Ashton. ------ HORRIBLE ------ I usually don't write reviews (Good or bad) But this place is a TOTAL RIP OFF and it came to a point that I ended up writing one. I went there to change front break pads for my 3 years old honda civic. Other then that car was COMPLETELY fine. I got a call from them that, both front and back break pads AND rotors need to be replaced. I was like, ok do it. Once I received the car, they had it jump started and didn't tell me that they broke the alternator of the car. Once I came back home, car won't start. They refused to take care of this fix. They asked me to pay another $800 to change the alternator. I was so pissed that I took it to Honda Service station right next to the street. It turned out that only car battery was bad and got fixed in $150 then what Ashton guys were asking to change alternator for ~$800. They do NOT know what they are doing. I was unable to be without my car during the week due to work, so I needed a shop to not only be open on Saturday but be able to finish in one day. Great service and great mechanics. Had my 1999 isuzu Rodeo blow a head Gasket. these guys fixed it and my other head gasket for a great price. These guys even went thru the trouble of changing my timing belt, water pump, valvle job, spark plugs, pulleys, oil, oilf filter and thermostat! It made sense to replace all of these parts at the same time because they were all coming out anyways, might as well put new parts in... When i got the car back i found out that they even put new hoses in the car for no additional charge, because the mechanic said it just made sense!. Went in for a problem based on the Yelp review, having never been there before. Told them the problem I was having, that had disappeared the day I took it in. They look for the problem but couldn't find anything wrong. I expected to pay the $175 estimate based on their evaluation of the car. They told me to take it home at no change since they couldn't find a problem! Said to bring it back with any more problems and they will check it out. Hopefully there's nothing wrong, but who has heard of a no charge testing and evaluation at an auto shop. This has definitely turned me into a customer! read more

When we moved to the area ~10 years ago, we didn't know where to take our car for service so defaulted to the dealer. What a mistake! Over-priced and under-serviced, I complained at work and someone referred me to Ashton. For the next big tune-up I took it to them. They called the next day to say all was basically fine but my water pump was going out and I needed a new one. As my heart sunk a bit and asked the cost (as if I really had a choice, right?) they told me they heard the dealer was having a recall on water pumps for some models, and THEY had called over to see if MY car qualified. Turns out for my model it was a silent recall....so I would not get a notice in the mail, but if I had a problem and brought it in it would be handled for free. They said I could pick up my car from Ashton and bring it to the dealer, and after they were done with the no-charge water pump, bring it back to Ashton and they would finish the tune-up. Being mildly lazy and not wanting to drive back and forth over the next few days, I asked what a water pump would cost for them to just do it right then. $700 for them, normally over $1,000 at a dealer! Needless to say I went and got the car, took it to the dealer for a free water pump, and brought it back for the rest of the tune-up. They had told me up front the tune-up was a big one (60,000 miles) and would be ~$750. When I picked up the car they handed me the bill.....$690. Now THAT is incredible service! If they had said I needed a new water pump I would have really had no choice but to pay them to put one in. But they did the right thing, and have earned my business for life. We have referred many, many people via word of mouth to Steve and team at Ashton, who all now make it their go-to mechanic. Figured it was time to share the love on Yelp too! read more

Steve is the man! I came In with a new set of rims that needed to add spacers, after problem after problem he was able to help and take care of my car. I appreciate the help here because he was very persistent to finish my car. He had to shave down the bolts underneath my spacers because it would hit my rim causing it to not sit correctly. It took them over a month to identify it even though I told them they were wrong in their first diagnostics. I just experienced hell and heaven(okay,maybe not that dramatic). Last night, while hanging out with my friends, I left my jacket at a restaurant like a big doofus. What I didn't realize was that my keys were in my pocket, and since I had hitched a ride from a buddy I didn't realize until it was too late. My car was parked inside the West Pleasanton Bart station garage and I had no choice but to leave it over night, hoping that my jacket would turn up come morning. To make the matters worse, my parents had been nagging me to get a spare for my keys for awhile now which I naturally brushed off because that's what I'm supposed to do as their son. So naturally, I had to have my car back as soon as possible so that my parents wouldn't find out with a subsequent "I told you so" lecture. Because I had been racing against time, I googled and called around trying to look for the best solution that would be both time and cost efficient. I first called locksmiths, and most quoted me for over $300 including "service charges"(hidden fees). I threw that plan out the window and decided to have my car towed to the Honda dealership since it was right around the corner. So I called some other towing companies, one which told me that it would cost "$200 per hour because not having the keys makes it a more difficult operation since they won't be able to get the car to neutral without it". Note that I've used this towing company before and the normal cost then was about $50 for the service and additional fees depending on the distance. I was about to give up and fork over the cash until I found Ashton Auto Service. Over the phone they told me that it would be $125 flat, no additional fees and will be there as soon I want. Steve, the tow truck driver, came and met me promptly, greeted me with a smile, and got the job done in 30 minutes despite my car being in a not so ideal location(Bart station garage with cars going in and out). Not to mention, he got into my car and and put my car into neutral in less than 5 minutes... not as difficult as other towing companies had told me. I felt at ease with Steve's professionalism and friendliness and can't say enough good things about it. To reiterate, I met with Steve around 9:20 am, he dropped off my car at the dealership by 10:30 am, and after I took care of some stuff on my end I'm home right now at 11:10 am typing out this review. I called them afterwards to get his name for this review and he had told me that he went back to straighten out my car even though his job was already completed when he dropped my car off; he went beyond what was required of him. I may be out $260 today(the key will cost me $135) overall but the process was painless thanks to Ashton Auto Service and Steve. Very fast, reliable, honest, and I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

Came in 3 days ago for a smog check, unfortunately my computer was not working and they were unable to smog my vehicle. They replaced the fuse for free and told me to come back in a couple of days for a retest. Went back after 2 days, my car passed smog, and only charged me $50. I'm always hesitant going to car shops because I don't know when I'm over paying for a service. The tire pressure light came on while I was driving down to LA for Thanksgiving, and I called their office in a panic 30 minutes before their official opening time. They were perfectly friendly and said I could come in. After checking the tire pressure, they let me know that it was probably a faulty sensor battery rather than anything wrong with the tires. I'm definitely not a car guy, and they were honest in telling me that I didn't have to get anything replaced right away.
