I landed upon Greath South Bar last night after searching high and low online for a Tuesday night…read moreopen mic on Long Island. Sign up was at 7:00pm and the mic started at 7:30. Now I've pervious performed at and attended over 100 open mics, at different bars, venues, houses etc, and believe me when I say this was one of my all-time favorite. All the musicians were super talented, the host was a pro's pro, and the audience were incredibly supportive & engaging. The space just felt warm, friendly and had a calm yet electric buzz the entire evening. Also, the bartender, Penny, really seemed to set the tone for the entire bar. She is extremely welcoming, witty and just an all-around positive person. You can tell she really enjoys her job and makes sure that her patrons are having a good time. I was sticking to non-alcoholic ginger beer all night and she only charged me $2 each, how kind is that?! All in all, a true gem of a bar with an open mic that I will 1,000% return to.

But this time I went with their steak sandwich and it was everything. I'm still dreaming about it. Snacking on a side of fries on our way home was the perfect ending to the day as they have amazing fresh French fries and I'm not a fry person. Also their version of burger sauce is pretty in point. I've been to Main Street Patchogue a few times before and I'm always amazed at how it's now like Huntington, with tons of eateries, bars and places to hear live music. It was a busy late Spring Friday night and my cousin told me if we were there just two weeks later (ie, post Memorial Day), there would have been lines to get in anywhere. So make resos! I made one easily earlier that day and when we arrived around 7:30, it was not packed, but it is pretty loud in there even half full. Our waiter, Jonathan, expertly took such great care of us from start to finish, even taking my father's dad jokes in stride. There's a solid cocktail menu, but I had a couple glasses of a better-than-decent prosecco. My cousin loved his espresso martini. For food, count on a couple respectable vegan entrees and I went with the Japanese eggplant with cashew ricotta. The eggplant is delicious, slightly sweet with a creamy rather than chewy (thank god) texture. The cashew ricotta is also tasty, but I do think it needed to be blended a bit more to remove the slightly grainy texture (the cashews might have needed more soaking). My father loved his French onion soup and pastrami sandwich. Separate paragraph for the fries. They deserve it. I'm glad we ordered these to share- it's an enormous platter of them. I appreciated that they were salted perfectly. I appreciate restaurants that can make satisfy a variety of preferences and dietary restrictions. The vibe here is festive and vibrant and a great choice for groups and families.

There was a small "Happy Anniversary" place card with our menus, which was nice, but unfortunately there was no other acknowledgment of our special occasion. I was also a little surprised by the menus. They had nice leather covers, but inside were several separate sheets of paper, which seemed unusual for a restaurant positioned as upscale. I ordered the three-course prix fixe special. The website listed it at $55, although I believe the restaurant menu said $57. I had the Korean wings, which were huge and very tasty, although extremely messy, followed by the salmon, which was good. My wife had the rigatoni and said it was very good. Every month they host events that are both nostalgic and entertaining. We came here for office trivia and we had an absolute blast. I've been coming to Arooga's for awhile now. Food here is not always the best, but the main reason I always come is because of the service I receive. I know it sounds so cheesy, but good service always makes people come back; I'm proof of that! I pretty much always get the same waiter since I mainly come at the same times every week. I'm not really sure why this waiter isn't a manager or something more. His name is Eric and every single time I get seated, he always greets me with good energy. He's a fun waiter and makes sure our food is coming fast. He makes sure our drinks are refilled and actually has conversations with me and whoever I'm with. He doesnt just treat us as a 'customer.' Food was fresh and delish! I had the OG chicken sandwich on gluten free roll which was so good. My boyfriend had Mozzarella triangles which he loved and Trio Fajitas which was very flavorful. Atmosphere was fun - we watched the Kentucky Derby. Deandra our waitress was so helpful and friendly. Jason the manager came over shook hands and was so nice. The pros - great beer selection and service at the bar. Cons - our food took forever and when we got it, it was so-so (not to mention the crowds). Overpowering smell of bleach!! Noticed this the first time we went there and it was brand new, so thought they were being over-zealous with cleaning products, but after our THIRD visit tonight, it is STILL a very prominent odor and, to me, very much of a turn-off. I had looked at the menus of a couple of other nearby places. Very glad that I chose this one. Sad that it's not near me, but I'll be back.

The Skirt steak, looked perfectly marinated and cooked, with some very large asparagus on the side. Next time I'm getting the Skirt steak, still thinking about it. Happy hour is 4-7pm just $2 off drinks and apps.. bar only not in dining room not much of an happy hour.
