Every trip to Deep Creek I go on, this place is a must! Some of the best barbecue I've had is from this gem hidden up on the mountain. Their restaurant is nothing too fancy, and fancy isn't even needed with how good the food is. Inside you'll find some picnic table and the counter where you place your order. Last time I made a visit, some friends and I shared the piggy platter with pulled pork and the brisket, along with sides of their baked beans and coleslaw. The coleslaw is a must to pair with the pulled pork. All of the meat was perfectly seasoned, and super tender. It really is melt-in-your-mouth good. The barbecue sauce provided is a great compliment to the meal and completes everything. I have yet to be disappointed by Archie's and will continue to visit for some fantastic barbecue! read more

An update to my review - nothing has changed, Archie's is still hands down our favorite BBQ. In fact, we love it so much that we had Archie's cater our wedding in 2015. They came all the way from Maryland to the Pittsburgh area. Debbie Archer was great with helping me to organize the food - she was very accommodating and quick to respond to any questions or requests I had, while working with our budget. The food at the wedding was AMAZING as expected - we got so many compliments from our guests on their meals, and everyone wanted to know who the caterer was. Some were a little disappointed to find out that it's about an hour and a half drive away though! The guys who set up the catering and served the food were great - they took care of everything. I didn't have to worry about a single thing that night which is a huge relief for a mostly DIY bride. They packed everything up at the end of the night and cleaned up after themselves. We couldn't have been happier with the service beginning to end. Came here for lunch and split a buffalo chicken wrap and a meat plate (half brisket half pulled pork). We had asked that the buff chick had ranch instead of bleu cheese, but that didn't exactly happen, oops. The meat plate was excellent and I loved the BBQ sauce. As sides we got the potato salad and meaty beans (lol) and they were both DELICIOUS. Also loved the cornbread. This was our second time at Archie's and surely not the last! While on vacation with my husband, and my cousin and his girlfriend, we decided to split the Mountain Man challenge, which consists of 1 rack of ribs, 1 half bbq chicken, 4 pieces of cornbread, 1 hot side dish, 1 cold side dish, 1 archie deluxe sandwich and a drink. Since the staff knew that we were just going to split the food, they gave us an extra side at no charge and split up the sandwich contents - half brisket, half pulled pork. And, they gave us each a bun. We only had to pay for 3 extra drinks. Everything was delicious! And, let's just say we all had plenty to eat and still had leftovers! Totally worth the $50! The Mountain Man Challenge wall of shame is quite funny! For those 13 or 14 out of 326 (at the time of our visit) that actually completed the challenge, I saute you! As others have mentioned, Archie's has a great atmosphere. It is a nice, clean restaurant. It is more of a fast food place in the fact that you seat yourself, grab your own condiments and drinks, and throw away your own garbage. Staff is friendly. Nice log-cabiny feel. I said to my husband, " Archie's - 4 stars?" His reply (with a mouthful of delicious BBQ) was, "ABSOLUTELY - if not 5!" Well, there you go folks. Marriage is all about compromise, so let's call it 4.5 stars for Archie's! It is really nice to encounter a non-pizza, non-chain spot while in the DCL area, and Archie's will satisfy any carnivore and/or BBQ connoisseur. It sure made us happy, and we love BBQ. Love the friendly service at the counter/cashier, and they bring your food to you at your table, which is made up in a very log cabin-like atmosphere with big ol' picnic-style tables, perfect for passing your delicious BBQ dishes around (or don't share at all). We definitely ordered way too much food, but the portions were large and the prices were fair. Collection of hot sauces and BBQ sauces met my needs, spice-wise and flavor customization-wise. Meat isn't over-seasoned and served without sauce so you can do the dousing yourself. Our sampler platter contained 4 juicy, meaty, fall-off-the-bone ribs, pulled pork (my favorite), brisket (the weakest link in a stellar lineup), cornbread (a total superstar in the cornbreads of the world), and two sides. We chose the mac-and-cheese (how I really rate a BBQ place) and the baked beans. Hubby loved the baked beans (that's his jam) - they had little chunks of hot dog mixed in with the beans! I enjoyed the mac, and doused it in a pool of Frank's Red Hot (that's my jam). Service, as mentioned, was quick and friendly. Food was delicious. Bathrooms were clean. Seating and parking were ample. Went here while vacationing at deep creek lake because the local microbrew place was about an hour wait. Was Friday night and place was never more than half full but several streams of people through the door. Ended up going what I always do at BBQ joints a platter containing a little of every meat and a side. Enough to split with another person the 1/2 rack of ribs on the plate were good but a little too red for my taste. I know there should be some pink seat but these looked under cooked. Fall off the bone good though and not too much fat to fight. Pulled pork was excellent and brisket was really good too. There was counter order service and the food literally was brought in less than 5 minutes which makes me think how long it was sitting in the back. Of course it's not cooked to order but it was eerily quick. The bake beans were interesting as they had bits of hot dog cut up in them, and the mac n cheese was sub par. Plenty of extra BBQ sauce available which is awesome but I didn't even find the hot house blend that spicy. Cornbread was...meh. I got a look at the salad and as always in BBQ place you should shy away from it as it wasn't much to look at. If I could give you some advice Id say, "Just the Meat!" read more

Archie's was the last stop in Deep Creek before heading home...and it did not disappoint! Order at the counter, and enjoy your last few minutes of hunger before heaping mound of grilled mammal slathered in deliciousness is served at your table. Offerings are fairly standard- sandwiches, wraps, wings, half-chickens, ribs, and piles of pork, brisket, etc. served in various sampler combinations. The two older boys ordered boneless chicken wings (much more than they could eat),I split a rib/brisket/pork sampler with boy#3 (much much more than we could eat), and my wife sensibly ordered a pork wrap. Cornbread, slaw, potato salad are the kinds of sides you are going to be offered. Food was just awesome. BBQ ribs were fall-off-the-bone perfect, brisket and bbq pork were spot-on as well. Kids liked the buffalo chicken wings; wife liked her wrap. Everyone was happy, happy, happy...to quote Phil, who would love this place! Décor is what you'd expect in a BBQ joint...rustic, nice picnic tables, etc. Clean. Counter service was really friendly. Check, check, check. The thing that made us laugh most was the Mountain Man challenge. I can't remember all the details, but for $50, if you can consume a half chicken, full plate of ribs, 4 corn breads, a 16 oz. drink, one sandwich, a hot and a cold side, and possibly a few other items- in under a hour, with no bathroom break- you eat free. Something like 297 have tried it; 12 have succeeded. You lose, you pay. The hall of fame- and gastric shame- is posted in the vestibule as you enter. Aah, America. Land of BBQ and plenty. We really enjoyed this last stop, and it kept the family satiated...in gastric paralization...for the duration of the ride back to Lancaster. No cries of "I'm hun-gry" from the back of the van...it was an experience that stayed with us for hours! Will surely be back next visit! read more

I really wanted to give more stars but I can't! First of all let me say the customer services was great, as soon as we entered we were greater and the staff was extremely friendly. This was my first time visiting this area and we were looking for something basic that we could eat the next day as well. Being an country NC girl I love BBQ of any kind but this was the worst I ever had. I decided to get ribs and pulled pork and my boyfriend got ribs and chicken with green beans and macaroni as sides. When I first opened the containers at home I immediately notice the orange mush pulled pork like substance that reminded to of school lunch as a kid. I decided to take a bite but couldn't eat much more, the ribs and chicken were next. The chicken was so bland and dry, the ribs were tender but taste like nothing unless they were smothered in sauce. My boyfriend a former corrections officer (who ate the food prepared by inmates everyday) refused to eat anything except cornbread and macaroni! The next day we decided to eat burger king and subway. We ate here yesterday, 6/27/2013, and the food was good. Had a sampler, an order of boneless buffalo-sauced chicken strips, cornbread, smoked macaroni and cheese and baked beans sides. Prices are very reasonable, the staff pleasant and friendly, the food was delicious and the place was very clean. The smell of the smoker as you walk up to the front door was fresh and not overwhelming. I don't know why people get so down on a place because it's "not the best BBQ I've ever eaten" -- this place's BBQ is above average and as long as it's consistently good, we would definitely eat here again if we come back to the area, and recommend it to others. Don't come expecting the best BBQ you've ever eaten. Come expecting good and solid BBQ that's fairly priced and served in a clean and pleasant establishment. BBQ? Really? The only thing BBQ about this place was the sauce. I got the sampler platter which consists of ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. The ribs had no smoke flavor and were not spice rubbed. They were a bit greasy but they were very tender. The brisket had no smoke ring which should have been a clue. It had no bark and was very bland, and I'm guessing it was cooked in an oven and not smoked. It had no flavor at all. The pulled pork was average at best and in my opinion it was over sauced. This place was fabulous! My husband and I were exploring the area today and stumbled upon Archie's after searching yelp for "bbq". Did not disappoint! We split the piggy platter with chopped brisket and pulled pork- both were amazing. Definitely the best brisket I have ever had, and my husband was all over my pulled pork. The corn bread was moist and sweet and delicious. We couldn't decide between three sides so we got all of them. Our favorite was the meaty baked beans but the potato salad and mac n cheese were also amazing. The service was great, the tables were clean, the decor was fun and woodsy, and the cashier was very friendly and had excellent recommendations. This is a great, great barbecue joint in McHenry. It's family-run and their passion for their restaurant shows. I was a little apprehensive when we went in at first, because it was so *clean*. That's generally a bad sign in a BBQ joint. I expect a little damp smokiness and some sticky tables. Nope, not at Archie's. I got the sampler platter, which could also be described as "two animals, three ways". Ribs, brisket, and pulled pork, plus some beans and cornbread. It was great; the ribs in particular stood out. My wife was also quite happy with her ribs. The kids got pulled chicken sandwiches, which were quite large. So I had to help finish them. Which technically brought the "animals consumed" total to three. The only downside to the place is that the self-serve soda machine is set too high for the kids to reach, so I had to put down the ribs and help. Sigh. read more

Came here with a group of 7 for a birthday dinner for an 11 year old. We came off the mountain after riding and he wanted meat. Staff was great. We had child that's super picky, another that never had buffalo sauce and two that wanted all spicy wings and some ribs. You get it-mayhem with the ordering. The staff took it in stride and brought out the orders super fast. They know the demands of families that should have eaten an hour earlier. They brought out a cake we brought with the requisite Happy Birthday chorus. Big portions, left overs, meat was flavorful and moist. Definitely a repeat next time we're back. read more

After having pizza earlier in the day and really only seeing so so reviews with other establishments in the area I decided to hit this place up as it had a lot of positive reviews. I wasn't really disappointed and it was a nice break from only seeing pizza in pretty much every other establishment around this area. Let me start by when you first walk in a very nice and friendly greeter is there to tell you the basics and how to order. Menu is not huge and that's just fine! Ordered a rack of baby back ribs, pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese, and a hot dog with pulled pork on top. The baby back ribs, were tender, absolutely falling off the bone and had a good taste to them. I think for me a bit more aggressive seasoning would've been nice but you do have bbq sauce on the side, unfortunately the bbq sauce is not very good. Essentially tastes like store bought so that was a disappointment. The pulled pork was good to. I was impressed at how finely chopped it was, I mean it was very well pulled no chunks of pork to be found which me personally I don't mind a hidden chunk of pork in my sandwich every once in a while as long as it's not plain old grizzle & fat. Again a good bbq sauce would've finished the sandwich off well but... The hot dog was pretty well done. It had a nice smoky flavour to it and the pulled pork was a nice addition to the sloppy mess of a dog. While stuffing my face with all this pork I also nibbled on the corn bread. The corn bread was very moist in fact a bit too moist for me and thus I can only say that it was a very well done one for me. As long as it comes with the sides get it if you must have your fix but if not skip it. Finally the mac and cheese was so so, I'd skip it and just stick with your caveman or cavewoman instincts and go for the meat. We were visiting deep creek and had a great takeout experience here & were pleased with the Quality of the barbecue. I had the pulled pork sandwich, and I thought it was delicious. The pork on its own was so flavorful and moist. I did not even need the extra barbecue sauce they included but that was appreciated and also tasty to dip into. We also tried the pulled chicken, the brisket, Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and cornbread. All were good and to me better than the avg bbq place. We placed the order by phone & picked up via the drive thru 25 mins later. The staff was friendly, we received a perfect order, it was fast service and they kindly offered plates and utensils which was perfect for us and so thoughtful as we were from out of town and staying in a hotel. I'm picky about my BBQ and my fiancée is even pickier. He compares every BBQ place to his favorite so I knew when we came out to the Deep Creek area for his birthday and we found a BBQ place he'd probably do the same. But, he really didn't! He got the sandwich that had a pound of meat on it and while I was slightly disgusted, he loved it. Meh is about right. Nice staff and a nice inside, but everything I had there was bland. Everything from the iced tea to the mac n cheese to the brisket sandwich left a lot to be desired. My friend had the pulled pork and my other friend had the turkey and had similar reactions. The least repulsive dish seemed to be the ribs as my friend said they were decent. We had a party of 6 and getting in and finding a table on a Thursday night was no problem at all at 6:30. I had the sampler platter which consisted of ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. I had to try them both to get a feel of what the offerings are... I highly recommend the ribs. I did see a bunch of people ordering the challenge and splitting it. We had traveled to the area and were headed home but realized we were starving and were not wanting to wait til we got home and cooked. So we stopped here on our way out of town. The menu isn't extensive, and I found it somewhat pricey, but it tasted amazing. We were greeted immediately by the cashier who told us how to order and answered our questions. She was very friendly and basically made the whole experience great. We both ordered the two hand sandwiches (~$8), one with pulled pork and one with brisket. They don't come with a side, so we ordered mac and cheese and baked beans (~$3 each). The food was prepared quickly and tasted great.
