Before going, I had read a few isolated reviews mentioning poor service and food quality. Since our experience was the complete opposite, I think it's only fair to share it as some balance. We had made a dinner reservation for the patio overlooking the river. It was a beautiful, sunny (and HOT) day. When we arrived, the hostess let us choose our table. I picked a sunny spot, but our server, Amy, came over and suggested we move just one table back because the shade would reach us much sooner, and we would still have a great view of the river. She was right, and after a long day on our bikes, we really appreciated her thoughtfulness. And that was just the beginning. Amy immediately brought us water and took our drink order. I was craving a spicy margarita, which wasn't on the menu. She graciously told me that if they had jalapeños in the kitchen, she would make me a great one. A little while later, Amy appeared with my margarita in hand and apologized for the delay. Then she explained why it had taken a little longer: they didn't have any jalapeños in the kitchen, so a staff member had actually run to their nearby home to grab a fresh pepper FROM THEIR GARDEN for my drink! Seriously. Who does that?! And yes, it was one of the best spicy margaritas I've ever had. Dinner was just as impressive. I really wanted a Caesar salad with steak, which also wasn't a menu option. When I asked Amy about it, she immediately said she thought they could make it happen. And they did. The steak was cooked perfectly, the salad was well made, and it had exactly the right amount of dressing. After three days of biking the GAP, sitting beside the river with a delicious meal, refreshing drinks and that beautiful view was exactly what we needed. Huge props to Amy and the entire staff at River's Edge Cafe. From accommodating our off-menu requests to literally finding a fresh-from-the-garden jalapeño for my margarita, the service went far beyond what we expected. Our experience was absolutely wonderful, and River's Edge will definitely be on our list the next time we're in Confluence!

I spent a long day tooling around the Laurel Highlands and wanted to get back to Pittsburgh before…read moredark. However, since I was touring a few Frank Lloyd Wright houses, I had not eaten since my early morning continental breakfast at the Comfort Inn in Connellsville. Mindlessly following the Google Maps directions, I arrived in a town called Indian Head and didn't have any expectations about what I'd find in this family-friendly roadside diner. Without hesitation, I ordered the $13.99 Grilled Chicken Salad. I was quite impressed with what arrived. There were huge pieces of grilled chicken breast, tender and moist, with cucumber, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, onions, beets, shredded cheddar, and a pickled egg with ranch dressing on the side (Photo 9). Sounds basic, I know, but it was hearty, fresh, and genuinely satisfying. Midway through my salad, a plate of fries arrived (Photo 10). I wasn't expecting it, but the server apologized for the delay. I only noticed later that the fries were mentioned in the menu. I certainly didn't mind because they were hot, tasty, and not at all greasy. Even though I was getting full and kinda anxious to get going, I was rather hypnotized by the refrigerator of freshly made pies. I just couldn't help myself and ordered a $4.29 slice of Banana Meringue Pie (Photo 8). I don't think I've had homemade pie that good since gorging at Valois back in my olden grad school days in the South Side of Chicago. What a nice surprise to have such a delicious square meal in a place called Indian Head. Everyone was so friendly that you just had to smile; our waitress Lori was particularly nice and efficient. The food at Maywood Grill was superb and done to perfection. Their fried chicken sandwich surpassed all chicken contenders and their onion rings were sublime. However, it was their pizza that was the star of the show, as it has been a long time that a pie checked all the boxes. First, the crust was just the right mix of crunch and chewy goodness that thought I had stepped into New Haven, CT. Next, the cheese was real, not that plastic rubbish you find masquerading as cheese from so main big chains. Each slice was perfect example of how pizza should be done. Without a doubt, I will most definitely return a slice of Maywood Grill's perfect pizza pie.
