Craft beers, nice decor, good food, great staff, good for a group About 12 of us wanted a meal all together in McHenry MD, and we all like craft beer and pizza, so the Mountain State Brewing Co. restaurant was an easy choice. (Jun 2026). It's a large brew pub with a cabin-like décor, out Sang Run Road just north of Deep Creek Lake. There's a little carved bear by the front door, and a kid-size huggable bear at the host stand. Photo ops! And fun for the kids! They seated us quickly and our server was quick in taking beer orders. They have plenty of soft drinks, and we got Lemonade and Apple Juice, Orange Fanta (a favorite), and a pitcher of Mountain State's own creamy MSBC Root Beer - made here! Beer-wise, there were 16 draft crafts plus a couple of old standards to choose from on a paper menu or by looking at their website or QR-code. Most were around 5% ABV. We had Pennsylvania's full-flavored grassy citrusy mildly-bitter Victory Summer Love golden ale. We raided MSBC's just-west-of-here West Virginia brewery of their creamy malty lightly-bitter Miner's Daughter oatmeal stout, and a lightly-bitter caramel Almost Heaven amber ale. New York's Hudson North brewed us some summery sweet Salted Watermelon cider. And we had some from home: Columbia MD's Black Flag Snozzberry Haze: a fruity piney hazy IPA, standing up at 7% ABV. Baltimore's Mobtown Fever Dream, a creamy flavorful somewhat fruity IPA, punching at 7.4% ABV. And Baltimore's Wico Street Yeah Brah, a strongly-bitter double IPA, clobbering us with an 8.5% ABV! A wonderful fermented tour of the northeast! Get ready to say "yum" out loud... From their wide range of bar foods and appetizers, we had fresh crisp tortilla chips with their medium-spicy cream cheese and homemade-ranch baked Buffalo Chicken Dip, elevated with blue cheese on top and an add-on side of chipotle! They made their own fresh-Spinach & Artichoke Dip with fresh basil, roasted red peppers, and an extravagant blend of cream cheese, feta, mozzarella, asiago, parmesan, and cheddar jack. The giant soft crust Pretzels & homemade Beer Cheese were notably popular with the kids. Salads? Yep. Tasty Lemon Herb Chicken Salad, crisp and crunchy Caesar salad, house salad with requested black olives, and cole slaw. And sides of orange segments and raisin-like cranberries for the little ones. And on to the main feast :-). Simple fried chicken nuggets and off-the-menu Pepperoni Pizza to be sure the younger crowd was satisfied. The Boars Nest sandwich was overnight-tender pulled pork with tangy Carolina BBQ sauce and fresh crunchy cole slaw on a lightly-toasted brioche bun. The spicier "wilder" Wild Boar sandwich had that low-and-slow pulled-pork awakened with bright jalapeños and spicy Chipotle BBQ sauce, topped with provolone on that toasted yet pillowy brioche. The fresh Caprese sandwich had firm ripe Roma tomatoes, tender baby spinach, and fresh mozzarella with requested added chicken. It was all dressed with bright basil dressing, drizzled with tangy sweet balsamic glaze, on crisp and soft toasted Italian bread. A well-made classic caprese re-invented by MSBC as a bright crunchy sandwich! Everyone liked those classic crisp pepperoni pies. From their world-class pizza recipes, we had the Supreme: pepperoni, sausage, onions, green peppers, their cheese blend, and black olives, drizzled with fragrant fresh olive oil. And the vegetarian so-tasty-you-wouldn't-guess it-was-gluten-free Yard Sale pizza: marinated artichokes, prosciutto, mozzarella, with an olive oil & garlic base, sprinkled with fresh basil and a dash of freshly-cracked black pepper. Mountain State Brewing Co. gave us a memorable spread of great beers and delicious creative foods. You know we enjoyed leftovers the next day :-) Our terrific server Claire was ever-attentive, and between you and me, made it seem effortless to host our full table of hungry adults and kids. On our last trip to DCL, we went looking for a casual dinner brewpub where we could bring our pup. What a great find! We were able to sit out on the patio, have a great local brew and sample some absolutely great food, highlighted by some spectacular pizza. Back at Mountain State on a Friday night for some cocktails and pizza. In the last couple years, they have now actually added in some domestic drafts, which they never used to have. They also make some craft cocktails to keep up with other local establishments. Their woodfired flatbread, which I actually call pizzas because they're round, but thin crust, are the highlight. This year we ordered the Big Casino for the first time, which is Ranch base topped with fresh spinach, sliced roma tomatoes, bacon, and our mozzarella cheese blend. My husband had a house bloody Mary and I had a very tasty gin cocktail. We sat outside on their lovely deck, which has a view of the mountains and if you stay until sunset, there's usually a gorgeous sunset to boot! We love to make a stop here annually. They have a dog friendly patio as long as your dog obeys their rules: all dogs must be leashed, no barking, no biting, no begging, no dogs on your lap, no feeding your dog from the table, no allowing your dog to eat off your plate and servers are not allowed to pet or play with your dog while they are working. read more

The service was awfully slow for a Wednesday evening. When you enter you need to wait to be seated. I waited around 10 minutes just for the hostess to acknowledge us and seat my part of 2. It also didn't look overly packed at the time. Regardless of that, they had a fairly decent beer selection and extensive menu with pizzas. I enjoyed my beer and the pretzel with beer cheese was also good. Next time I'd go back for a pizza and possibly just sit at the bar. read more

We stopped into town for a long weekend, and it had been ages since I last stayed in Deep Creek. Had we not just had pizza the night prior, I would have ordered some here because it all looked (and smelled) amazing. The biggest thing of note, we had the friendliest, and most kind, waitress from any restaurant I had been to in a long time - so kudos for that! We ate at Mountain State and had a really good experience. The pizza was great, and the drinks were even better -- I had a margarita that was perfect. We ended up coming back a few nights later just for drinks. We had a few beers and a few margaritas, and the servers both nights were very nice and welcoming. My wife and I booked an igloo on 1/18 with our 3 and 4 year old. Service was wonderful and the kids loved the igloo experience. We ordered the appetizer dip sampler, cheese bread, Caesar salad, and the flatbread with pulled pork. We enjoyed everything. The only critique would be to put a bit less dressing on the Caesar. Nice selection of beers and a full bar. The hospitality is great and atmosphere fun and fast paced. We enjoyed live music and the eldest son liked the GF pizza. My youngest liked the gyro and husband enjoyed the steak and cheese. I was not a fan of the food I chose for dinner (bbq one night...steak and cheese with Caesar salad the other). The chicken dip is good and a nice appetizer to share. It's a popular spot so you can expect a short wait on Friday and Saturdays in season. Definitely try it! They have swag if you want a souvenir. The Bloody Mary looks delicious and I'll definitely try that next time. We were here in the winter (just after Christmas). Fun place when you need to eat and/or get out of your rental house. Conveniently located near Wisp, service is friendly and restaurant/bar area is spacious. Pizza was cooked too much to my liking, I'm not a fan of the char. Hummus was fresh and tasty. Drinks were served quickly but pizza was nearly an hour wait. Guess I'm on "mountain" time but hard to wait, but atmosphere was pleasant enough, so pack your patience. read more

We had a pretty big party and came here for dinner. We sat outside and it was great. There were a lot of tables outside with umbrellas and there was room for the kids to walk around and not have to be seated the whole time we were there. I ordered a Reuben and Caesar salad. Both were really good. I ordered the chips with the Rueben thinking it was fresh chips but it wasn't, it was a bag. They were good but just wasn't expected. My kids ordered the chicken fingers and they liked them. The staff was excellent. For desert my brother in law ordered a s'mores pizza for the table. OMG it was sooooo good. I could've probably ate the whole thing! I'm not sure the next time I'll be back in the area but this will definitely be a place we keep in mind when returning. read more

Came here on a Thursday afternoon and sat outside. It was such a beautiful background for our lunch and we even saw cows and deer! I enjoyed the hazy ipa and a reuban with salad. My food was really good. We also ordered a smores pizza for the table which was a crowd favorite. My daughter ordered a hot dog and it was huge! No complaints from her though. The service was great. Everything about this place was great! A great selection of different beers and an extensive list of different pizzas. We got the Pita and Hummus to start and then moved on to pizzas. We got the Mushroom Medley, Fire on the Mountain (no cheese), the Loaded Baked Potato, and the Cuban. They accommodated one of our friends who doesn't like cheese and they added more toppings and it was fantastic! The crust was so thin and crispy and had a great taste. The Mushroom Medley was a huge hit with our group and we wanted way more haha. This place is very family friendly and also great for beers after a hike or day on the mountain. The views are great from the back patio. Service was great! Amy was our waitress and she killed it. So nice and gave us great recommendations. The food and beer are good, generally, but the service was bad enough tonight to warrant 1 star. We were seated immediately but no one came to our table for over half an hour tonight. No water, no ordering, no nothing. Most distressing, I tried to encourage everyone to wait wait patiently but in the last 10 minutes we gestured to every server we saw. It wasn't packed. I ordered carry out from Mountain State Brewing Company. As soon as we arrived to pick up our food the sun was setting and there is a beautiful patio behind the restaurant in the perfect spot to take in the view. We ordered our pizzas in the car on the way to the restaurant and it was ready when we got there. There is marked carry out parking, so it was easy to pop in and out in under a minute. This must be a local favorite because the place was packed with people. We ordered a fire on the mountain and a margarita pizza. Normally I have pictures of food but we were hungry, so I didn't get the chance. I really enjoyed the fire in the mountain, there's a little heat in the sauce and I was happy the pizza was loaded with topping. The margarita pizza was ok. This version has sliced tomatoes on top which I believe is unnecessary. I can't wait to come back for the fire on the mountain pizza and to enjoy a sunset on the patio. This was the first place we stopped on our first visit to the area (we gravitate towards breweries). I think this was probably the best beer joint around, having tried a few others later that weekend. It was very loud and busy, and there was a wait for a table, but we prefer to sit at the bar anyway, so we grabbed a stool. The bartender was busy, but friendly, and we got something to drink right away. I had the Mountain State Seneca IPA (4/5) and the Troegs Field Study (4.5/5). We ordered their small nachos as an appetizer, and they were just ok. I'm not a fan of chili on nachos, and prefer real chees, because they get soggy otherwise. We then ordered one of their flatbread (the hawaiian), and that was great! I thought the pruicutto instead of ham was a neat twist. We were there on a busy Friday evening, and there was live music, a big crowd, and a lot of noise. It's just what I'd expect at a popular brewery. This was my second time visiting MSBC and had a terrific experience. The place is beautiful and it was trivia night so the place was buzzing with people who were heavily engaged in some light hearted fun. The pizza was great! We got the fire on the mountain specialty pizza and it contained all my favorite toppings (pepperoni, banana peppers, onions - we left off the sausage since my gf prefers it without). If I were to make a pizza at home this is what it would look like. The chips and salsa were okay. The chips were thick and the salsa's texture was different as compared to a Mexican restaurant. What did they do to fire on the mountain?? It used to be such an amazing pizza. We went last week and it was like cardboard with about a quarter of the toppings that used to be on it. The cheese seemed cheap and melted very hard. It's so disappointing. This used to be our favorite pizza in the area and I'm hoping it was a bad night, but the bartender said it looks like they always do now. About a quarter of the pizza was the crust around it which was not crispy like a good flatbread. It was hard and dry and not really edible. What a disappointment. read more

The only reason this place doesn't get five stars is when they're busy, the food comes out at all different times, i.e. pizzas and sandwiches twenty minutes apart. Pre-lockdown experience.* It's getting harder and harder to remember how to do this. I don't write reviews nearly as often as I once did. I don't quite remember the way things were a year ago. This is all a mess. What's not a mess, though? Mountain State Brewing Co. If you an avoid the masses and quarantine away from the city hordes, doing so near McHenry, MD might not be a bad call. Wide open spaces. Few people. Delicious beer & pizza. I've been doing this quarantine thing all wrong... Picture it: late-fall 2019. Johnny T was now John T and he was enjoying some much-deserved R&R to lead in to the holidays and a year of relaxation and rest (ha!). Throwing caution to the wind since he was hanging out with his best guys and it was the holiday season, he decided to go all in to some pizza and beer, gluten be damned!** We came in to the tap room on a Friday afternoon and I was surprised to see how busy it was. We had a server come to our table but given the amount of people in the taproom and guys in our group, I found it faster to order from the bar. Since it had been a while since I had a beer, I'd forgotten about my seasonal rotation. A few samples reminded that I favor a good brown ale in the fall so I settled on the John Brown Chestnut Ale. I'm not a fan of chestnuts but I found the odd taste nicely masked by the vanilla and molasses. The beer had a good malt finish and I savored the final drinks. The seal broken, I had a wild hair to try the black IPA. One more of those and I started to forget what was happening. It was time for food. Our table ordered a number of pizzas with the goal of mixing, matching and sharing. I'm an only child -- so you know how that was going to work. One of my friends and I exclusively shared the Fire On The Mountain and that was, hands down, the right choice. Sausage, pepperoni, banana peppers, and onions atop spicy red sauce and loaded with cheese. We shared a medium (16") but should have gotten a large (18"). We devoured that thing. I tried a few other pizzas on the table. They were good but didn't hold a candle to the Fire On The Mountain. It (and the beer) was well worth the upcoming gastric distress. I had chosen my path and I was fine with it. *That's* how good this pizza was. And, the beer. You can't forget the beer. In a normal world, I would be a few weeks away from a return trip to the taproom. That's not happening. That sucks. I hope I can correct this sooner rather than later. I'm willing to risk it all for this grub. For a fella with a funny belly, that's all the endorsement you need. And that's 2400 reviews. Punch it in. *Does that even matter anymore? What with people acting like there's not a pandemic going on, did the sacrifices everyone else made even matter? 'murca, you got some 'splainin' to do... **Didn't *have* to go all in. When you're south of the Mason-Dixon line it is ill advised to call your most excellent pizza, "New York Style" unless you're looking for boycotting from the local Mountaineers. How do you remedy that problem? You call it "Flat Bread Pizza." And let me tell YOU what...that there is some faaaaaaantastic New York...ummm...flat bread pizza. The crust was bubbly on the edges and just the right sorta crisp on the bottom. There were plenty of toppings (we went with the Meat Lovers version with tomato sauce instead of BBQ sauce) and they came together perfectly in each bite. The service was great and the ambience was perfect. I wish I didn't live three hours away otherwise this would be my go to place for pizza. Fwiw, they were also right on with Roma tomatoes for the Caprese salad so somebody's got some food smarts back in that kitchen! We were underwhelmed, sadly. I ordered the butter chicken pizza and it was very dry and flavorless. Totally lacked the spice of curry expected. My husband ordered the buffalo chicken pizza and it was like any other buffalo pizza. We then decided to try our luck at the apple crumble flatbread and it was even more disappointing. Picture a can of apple pie filling, straight of the can, thrown on a flat bread that wasn't cooked fully. And then add a "dusting" (and I'm being generous here) of what you "might" call a crumble. So disappointing. There are so many ways everything we ordered could've stood out a bit more. The drinks were ok. I ordered the grapefruit special and it was fine and my husband ordered the dark and stormy. Service was great and they took off the apple crumble, so we do appreciate that. I wanted to like this place more, but I didn't. Full disclosure, we came on a busy Friday night. We had called earlier in the afternoon to ask about reservations for 6 and they said they didn't do them, so when we got there we were told a 30-min minimum wait. Not a problem, except two large parties of 6 and 8 came in after us and were seated before us. We were seated inside and waited 24 minutes for someone to come to the table for our drink order. Service was better after that. The pizza crust was good but the margherita had slices of tomato all over it. The salad was good and fresh. Also had the local flight sampler and it was the best part of the whole meal. read more

A group of friends and I visited this restaurant at the end of July 2021 as part of an annual birthday celebration to Deep Creek. This restaurant was on our list for quite some time, and it did not disappoint! There was no wait to be seated without a reservation for a group of 8. We had a range of appetizers, entrees, including pizzas, salads, and sandwiches as well as a round of drinks. The cheesy bread was delicious, fresh, hot, and appetizing! For my entree, I ordered the Apple Butter Pulled Chicken. The sandwich was reasonably priced but not my favorite because the chicken didn't taste fresh. The chips on the side were a bag of chips instead of homemade chips, and they tasted great! I tried a bite of a friend's margherita pizza, and it was absolutely delicious. The portion sizes of the pizzas were appropriate for one adult. The cocktails were on point (I ordered the tequila flight). The service was very good--friendly, fast, and consistent. We would definitely return and try some of their other options! read more
