We visited recently with family. They were take out only but my in-laws pulled some strings for indoor seating. This place was great and a shame they aren't doing indoor seating again. I felt like I was in the godfather. In summer they even have bocce courts outside that look like a blast. Service was amazing with constant refills and even some canolis on the house. I really enjoyed the anti pasta to start, pizza was an appetizer and I had the veal parm as the main entree. I ate so much it hurt ... literally. Their old forge pizza is okay in my book although I like others in the area way more. Their sauce/gravy had great flavor. The veal parm was okay but not something I'd order again. This place has fallen off. Ordered a tray of red pizza and 4 cuts of double crust white. Totally flavorless! No detectable onions in the red sauce as well as the need for some salt, pepper, and other seasonings. The pizza here USED to be good but perhaps Old Forge pizza has not kept up with their reputation. I really haven't had pizza like I remember it from any places there recently. It's unfortunate. I have to say BIG disappointment!!!!!!! The mussels were not washed, sand was all thru the marinara sauce. The clams casino, one of the worst things I have ever had-old refrigerator taste as well. Inedible!!!! The white pizza was underdone, but OK. The pizza with sausage was foul and way underdone. We had one bite and left everything on the outside table. While I have enjoyed using goldbelly. They recently delivered frozen dumplings late at night after our family was asleep. In the morning, they were a pile of goo. Totally unsalvageable. So, there was not nearly enough dry ice, and the delivery window for frozen food was unrealistic. I simply asked for goldbelly to replace the item. I didn't ask for a refund even, just a replacement. They refused to do so. That is not an acceptable business practice and so I will no longer use them. read more

For those that haven't heard, Old Forge, PA likes to lay claim to being the self-professed "Pizza Capital of the World." USA Today (https://goo.gl/dySbwM) has even bolstered this claim by stating Old Forge is "The American Pizza Capital you've never heard of." Arcaro & Genell (A&E) are allegedly the masters of this style, as they've been mastering the craft since 1962. I always get a kick out of such bold proclamations; mostly because I like to try and debunk them, but this one also happened to tie-into my obsession with regional cuisine. The Old Forge-style of making pies is a rectangular pizza (don't call them "pies" here fyi) that's crust is somewhere between a Chicago-style and NY-style crust, but with an almost buttery texture. The hearty amounts of cheese is a mixture of American, mozzarella and cheddar and the toppings of one's choosing are trapped underneath to seal in the grease. We ordered up a half pepperoni and half sausage, olives and peppers red pie. Overall I'd say the pizza was really, really quite good―maybe even bordering on excellent. The toppings and cheese, while copious, were pretty standard in flavor. However, the real star was the crust; buttery and tender, but hearty enough to support the copious grease from all the cheese and mounds of toppings. So, would I say that Old Forge is the pizza capital? I'd say probably not--especially after my latest encounter with Lou in Chicago, but that's a story for another day--but they do a fine job and serve up a damn fine pi...err..pizza. read more

If someone asked you -- real quick, "Where is the pizza capital of the world?" Your first thought might be Italy. Maybe New York City? Okay, Chicago if you're talking deep dish. But if you were passing through Northeast Pennsylvania, you'd be quickly corrected. Everyone in this neck of the woods knows it's in Old Forge. This tiny Pennsylvania coal mining town proudly advertises itself as THE best spot in the world for pizza. Wait... you've NEVER heard of Old Forge? You're not the only one. I grew up less than 45 minutes away from Old Forge and I never knew about its 'pizza cred' until a year ago when reading a glowing review in USA Today's travel section. This past weekend, I went back to my hometown to visit my family and headed to the closest Crunch gym in Scranton. Oddly, you can also find the actual 'Welcome to Scranton' sign from the opening credits of The Office just outside the gym. That fact alone makes it a fun stop! I figured, I earned those calories. And besides, just how unhealthy is pizza anyway? Clearly I can justify anything... Keeping with the tradition of the famous pizza places in Old Forge, the Arcaro & Genell family began their business in 1962. To this day, you'll find family members waiting on tables and working behind the bar. You'll get that "family feel" the minute you walk in the door. Everyone seems to know each other, and if they don't, they probably will know you by the time you leave. I was greeted by Ashley who is the daughter of one of the owners. She was friendly and immediately could tell I was confused on what to order (and visiting from out of town. I wonder what gave it away?). She gave a run-down on what made the pizza so different in Old Forge. First, all pizza in Old Forge is baked in large rectangular metal trays (never round). You never call it a pie, but rather it's a tray. Also, what you might call a "slice of pizza" is actually called "a cut of pizza." Confused yet? I went with Ashley's recommendation for Old Forge's signature pizza: a cut of traditional red and a cut of traditional white. The white is actually a double-crusted, resembling more of a calzone than pizza. Out of the three pizza spots visited in Old Forge, I enjoyed the atmosphere at Arcaro & Genell the most. It was a nice combo of classy dining establishment mixed with vintage cool, like a bar out of Mad Men. Then I got the bill, which was less than $4 dollars. Made the 75 mile trip from where we were staying, and it was well worth it. I'd never heard of "Old Forge Style" pizza before, but it's something worth trying, especially if you're like most people with a provincial view who thinks they've had "the best" pizza anywhere on the planet. What this small town has will truly surprise you, particularly this establishment called Arcaro & Genell. We ordered clams casino, which were fresh and tasty. We also ordered a 1/2 tray (not a "pie") of the white pizza with tomato, garlic and onion, and a full tray of red pizza with mushroom, sausage, and black olive. I'll be honest, the pizza isn't the most photogenic, but who cares. It smells and tastes delicious. It's not quite like Sicilian or deep dish, and not like thin crust NY/NJ style, it truly is a style of its own, and stands strong amongst the crowd. You can really taste each and every ingredient, whether you go with the red or white pie. Hell, try both. The cannoli was also good (fresh filling and shell, although no powdered sugar on the outside), boo said her cheesecake was good, and the espresso was also great. They even put in a small lemon peel for flavor. When you sit down, there is bread and a plate of chick peas and olives at the table. All were wonderful, particularly the chickpeas. On top of all this, the wait really wasn't bad for a Saturday (maybe 15-20 min tops), service was good and the prices are reasonable. This is the type of place I'll find an excuse to come back to, and my pizza snob girlfriend from Long Island agrees. When we left, a gentleman named Damian who is the maitre 'd, made a point of asking how we liked it and thanked us for coming. My NEPA friends said that it was either go here or go across the street for the best pizza in the country. So I made the trip up to Old Forge and stopped at the first of the two that I saw, Arcaro & Genell, which has apparently been making pizza here for over 50 years. I opted for the double crust white pizza with broccoli. I learned that they're not "slices" here, they are "cuts". And you don't order a "whole pie", you get the "full tray." Otherwise, you stand out as a tourist. So now you know. The pizza is fresh baked, so I nibbled on the bread and the bean salad while I waited. Bad move because I was not nearly as hungry as I should have been for this monster. An inch thick and more than a foot square, this is a whole lot of pizza. Lots of garlic, lots of broccoli and a ton of cheese. Very tasty, I was only able to eat two cuts and the rest went with me back to the hotel. Easy parking unless the place is packed. The pizza was really good but very wet. I think maybe the broccoli hadn't been fully drained? Anyway, I enjoyed it and can see why it's so very popular. read more

Drove all the way from northern New Jersey to have this pizza. We were NOT disappointed. This are of PA is the self-proclaimed pizza capital of the world. Their sauce automatically includes onion. They don't call it a "slice," it's referred to as a "cut." They way it's baked on a baking sheet, it's cooked all the way through, soft almost fluffy and easy to tear cuts that are nice and crispy on the outside. The staff was great too. Some people may compare this pizza to a Sicilian, it is nothing like a Sicilian. A Sicilian pie is thicker, more doughy and way more dense and filling after having only one slice. The 12 cut is lighter and the dough has more air in it. I definitely recommend a 12 cut tray because after one cut, you'll just want another. Definitely will be going back again. read more

First time will be our last...ordered Lasagna and Chicken Parm to take out. Had to wait 20+ minutes in the tiny little side building just to pick up food. Counter service was extremely slow, literally waiting on 1 customer at a time with 3-5 minute wait between customers. The food was not good - Lasagna w/meatballs was drowned in sauce and really had a strange flavor and texture, and the chicken parm had hardly any sauce on the pasta. The chicken was obviously reheated/microwaved and was cooked to death, it was so over cooked and dried out I couldn't even cut through it, I actually thought it was chicken on the bone at first, but it was just dried out hard chicken! We were supposed to get a salad with each dinner but they only gave us 1 salad (and every salad dressing except for plain oil and vinegar had a .75 cent fee) and the 2 dinner rolls they gave us were dry and stale. Almost every bite of food ended up in the trash. No pride in what they were serving, zero quality standards, zero sense of urgency at the counter....too bad I can't give zero stars! read more

I grew up about an hour away and never heard of Old Forge pizza until about a year or two ago. Finally got the chance to get some while in the area. The pizza is very similar to Sicilian. I honestly am not sure what is the difference between the two they are so similar. As a result, your opinion of Sicilian will bias your opinion of this pizza. I am more of a NYC thin/Neapolitan kind of guy. Nevertheless, I thought it was a very good pie, err tray. It isn't world class but I enjoyed it very much. My wife got the vodka pasta and though that was very good also. The service was excellent too and I loved the classic "Godfather" music. If you are in the area, I'd definitely recommend stopping by and trying pizza in the self proclaimed "pizza capital of the world". I wouldn't make a pilgrimage here though just for the pizza like I would to NYC or New Haven. read more
