Great local, family owned pizza restaurant. We are from the DC area, where it's hard to get great pizza, particularly New York style. We were in Scranton, so looked up pizza restaurant recommendations, and found Buona. We called in our order and picked it up. When I told them I was from out of town, I got the whole family story of the business and how it's been handed down to the next generation. The pizza was really good. Can you get a better slice in NYC? Yes, but if I were in Scranton I'd definitely go back. Lots of toppings on the meat lovers. Good flavor and the right amount of cheese for a white pizza on the Tomato & Basil. Good crust, though I'd like it be cooked slightly longer. It has some crispness to it, but I'd love a little bit more. If you are looking for good pizza in Scranton, give this a try. read more

Walking around Downtown and on way back to car walked by the open door. We got a whiff of pizza aroma seeping out the door and had to go in to check it out. We found Buona on Yelp. After a day of skiing a satisfying slice sounded ideal. They do carry out pizza by the slice, and the BIGGEST calzone you've ever seen. Pandemic procedures: call your order in and pick up in store. The employees seemed to be a little slack in wearing masks, but I felt safe in mine. The restaurant was empty. To go only right now (Feb 2021). The pizza was perfect. Cheesy and a little crunch with awesome flavor. The calzone was also really impressive. The ricotta and ham inside tasted really good. We were able to walk to and from the Hilton around the corner. All in all it was fun to have some authentic food. read more

Hours to this place say they close at 11 on a Saturday night. Walked in around 9:02. I've never seen more miserable people working in a restaurant in all of my life. As others have stated, yes, this is a classic local pizza joint so the ambiance has a Backroom feel. I'm sure this place is cozy in winter, but it was about 90 degrees on a June evening. The pizza itself would not have been bad (toppings of cheese, sauce, and pepperoni were pretty good) if they didn't burn it, but they did. Ate one slice. Here's the bigger problem--if these folks hate their job so much, they need to hire people who know how to interact with the public. Three people walked in as I sat waiting for pizza, none of them acknowledged: the pizza cook kept hiding behind the pizza oven scraping the wooden pizza paddle. The guy making the pizzas looked as if I was asking him to wipe my rear when I ordered a pizza, and then in back a woman staring glumly out into the wide yonder of the restaurant. Finally, a young woman at the counter asked, after patiently waiting for 10 minutes, "Could I get two slices?" The cook said, "We don't have none. We're closing." An hour and a half early? I got my pizza and two sodas, and the pizza cook mumbled $22 dollars. That was my whole interaction. And when restaurants close and act like their world has been shattered because people didn't support them, this is why. I'll never go back. We stopped here briefly while in town; the place has an old fashion look with a long way to get to the order counter, kind of reminding me of a school cafeteria. We ordered pizza by the slice and were quite happy to receive a generous, hot and crispy portion with a very delish sauce and just the right amount of cheese... Quite a delight! read more

The person answering the phone was extremely rude. I called said I wanted a large pizza and he said it was 15 min before close but he would make the pizza. He hung up on me. I did not have time to tell him exactly what kind of pizza I would like. When I called back and explained that nicely, he told me he doesn't want to make a pizza for me anymore after I only asked to actually tell him what pizza he was supposedly going to make me. We chose this pizza place because it was within walking distance from our hotel. Wasn't sure what to expect so after reading reviews we decided to get a closer look. When we entered the establishment I noticed smoke. Maybe they had just burnt someones pizza or the ventilation couldn't keep up. We decided to order anyway. I ordered a medium pizza and my wife was hoping they had white pizza by the slice but they didn't so she ordered a cheese steak sandwich. After about a 15 minute wait everything was ready to go. The pizza was ok but had a film of burnt (black) residue on the bottom. The pizza was well done but itself wasn't burnt. My wife's sandwich was dry and we added all the ketchup packets we had to equalize it. Maybe they had a bad day. read more

On a friend's recommendation, I ordered a Stromboli at Buona Pizza. This place has been in Stanton for 55 years. The folks behind the counter were super friendly and helpful. Patient enough with me to explain some of their pizzas. Definitely recommend stopping in for a slice and a drink. If you you're looking for something fancy this isn't the place for you. Great buttery crust, the moozarell was great, pepperonis were spicy. The crust was thin but my personal preference is to have it a hair thinner. Good pizza REQUIRES dabbing off grease with a napkin- like Buono's delivers. Has that great PA pizzeria feel inside, like the one I used to work in. read more

Buona has becoming something of a Scranton institution and locally famous but I really don't understand why. Their pizza itself is rather average. Unless you cover the pie in toppings or loads of salt there isn't much in the way of taste to be found. The restaurant itself is dimly lit and grimy. When entering Buona Pizza I feel the same as when walking through a dark alley or parking garage after dark. The people who work behind the counter all have attitude problems. Looking from the outside nothing invites you to enter. Once entering a few games to hold your attention while you wait so, bring your quarters. Then you walk by about 10 tables to reach the order counter. Still the look is just blah. But, if you place an order and have a little patience you will be in for a treat. Called for delivery last night, whoever answered immediately acted as though I was bugging them attempting to give them my business. Then they outright refused, even though we're like maybe 5 blocks away? So, why say you deliver, if you don't? Really bugged me. And in truth, I only ordered from them because I remember their pizza as being decent. So, after hanging up with them? I ordered from Grande instead. Firstly, I'd like to state that I'm disappointed that I even have to write this review. I've been a long-time customer (5+ years) at Buona's Pizzeria and previously have not had any issues. They have good pizza, but as I've come to find out, terribly rude customer service. My coworkers and I decided to get a pick-up order for our lunch on 3/12/21. My coworker placed the order and one of us were going to pick it up. The coworker was met with annoyance and acted as if we were inconveniencing them. We quickly forgot (5-7 minutes after the order was placed with a phone log to prove it) that our one coworker couldn't eat meat today. We called back to ask if we can change our order to a calzone without meat and my coworker was very rudely responded to with cursing, lack of understanding, and terrible customer service. She quickly called back after the second call to cancel the order because she no longer felt comfortable picking it up. When asking for a refund/cancel the order, she was told she could pick up her refund at the police station because he was calling the police to file harassment charges. It was our mistake that we messed up the order but we very quickly tried to correct this. This sort of service is just unacceptable and I will no longer be a customer at Buona's pizza. Good pizza is not equivalent to harassment and verbal threats. My coworker's credit card was charged prior to pick up and now we have to go through disputing the charge all for wanting a nice Friday afternoon pizza. read more
