Change of ownership a few years ago led to some inconsistency, but not on this last visit. The crust, sauce and cheese were perfect! My family and I have been going to Cebula's pizza for over 30 years. It truly was one of the best pizzas in the area. I would always order mine the same way, "Cheesy and Extra Crispy". And the owners were happy to oblige. I was sad to hear the family were selling the business a few years ago. When the establishment changed hands we still decided to patronize the new owners of the pizza place because they were also sold the recipes for this once delicious pie. I had been there a few times over the past couple of years, and I really tried to like it. But it wasn't the same. However, my family still liked it so I would go along and still order my "Cheesy Extra Crispy" order. While in the restaurant this evening, I placed my same order again with the waitress making sure to emphasize the "Extra Crispy" because doughy pizza really turns my stomach. Our order came in out in less than 10 minutes. The owner, Frank Andrews, delivered our pizza to our table by literally throwing it on to our table and walking a way without a word to us. We took a look at the pizza and could tell it wasn't fully baked and was far from extra crispy. I politely asked the waitress if they could place our pizza back in the oven to get it crispy. The waitress brought the pizza back into the kitchen and the owner quickly reappeared at our table. His angry words to us "this is as good as it's getting and if you don't like it you can leave". What kind of owner talks to a customer like this for simply asking to have it well done? Not a very smart one. We were so taken aback by the conduct of the owner that we decided to leave and made our way to the door. The waitress asked about the 2 cans of Coke that we had in front of us. I told here we weren't paying for them because of the utter disrespect shown by the owner. We walked out of the restaurant. The owner then aggressively followed us out to the parking lot and started screaming at us about paying for our Cokes. He went behind my car and took a picture of my license plate. My son, seeing how upset this was making me, called the owner an unfortunate slur word that made him more out of control. I returned to the restaurant to pay for my drinks because I didn't want anything from this individual. I was then berated by his mom and dad. You can't make this stuff up. Unfortunately, the pizza has gone way downhill. They have changed the crust and the cheese is completely tasteless. Don't be fooled by the good reviews online. Those were for the business when the original owners had it. And to you Mr. Andrews, you can be sure that I would never step into your filthy, run down, hole in the wall again. Hello and welcome to this take out video. Today's show takes us to Cebula's Pizza in Dupont Pennsylvania. How can I explain this type of pizza for those who never experienced or has ever lived in the area. To me it tastes like a cross between baked which here in Northeast Pa calls "Old Forge" style and fried which is called "Scillian" style pizza. Now here is the thing, this place has been around for many years with a high reputation for being excellent, however a few years back the original owners from what I heard sold to who owns it now and is basically keeping the same recipe. When you get pizza from this place you get it how it comes, cheese and sauce, that's all, they do not offer any types of toppings. Now it was not bad, I tasted a more cheddar flavor as the main cheese where in other pizza's you taste a more dominant mozzarella. Now I recommend you all to try this for yourselves and make a decision. I can't say it was bad, it wasn't, the next time I try this I will eat it in house to see if there is a difference. I noticed that the crust was not crispy, I know I went from Dupont to West Pittston, but it should not lose the crispiness that fast. I give this overall a 5 out of 10 being an average rating. For all of you that follow me on a regular basis know I never felt the need to rate a pizza, now I am not saying this is a bad review, I will call it an average review. It's been a long time since I have been to Cebula's and after decades of a pizza recipe guarded closely and with a stellar reputation, I wanted to check it out not that it's under new ownership. I was not disappointed! The pizza tasted just about the same (I hope the new owners got those 70-year old, well cured pizza pans with the deal). I did done in rather than take put to size up the place. Same booth and tables as it always had, which is a nice touch cause this place is art deco heaven. There was a coat of lighter colored fresh paint, which makes it a nice & bright and the large mirror still hangs in the dining room like ur at ur Grandmas's house. The circular bar area is the same and filled with locals having a great time! So good to be back! Although the menu has expanded, I ordered the classic tray. The crust was perfectly heavy in the traditional Cebulas way... with that tomato-ey sauce and crazy cheese all burnt in the right places. The traditional 8 large square pieces had those dark airy bubbles lifted from the dough. OMG! Fabulous!! I was never so happy to burn the roof of my mouth...we all know & love "the Cebula burn"...where you want to wait to eat the pizza cause it's so hot out of the oven...but you can't! You just can not! I took half of the tray home with me 'cause who doesn't love Cebula's pizza served cold the next day??? AMMI RIGHT??!!! I have heard alot of great things about the new young couple that took over the restaurant, and I am thrilled for them. They kept the traditional but are doing some spin offs like broccoli & cheese on certain days and upped their burger game and even added salads! Slow down fellas...slow down! Rumor on the street is that they will sell you an un-baked or par baked pizza to take home. Great for us native NEPA peeps who travel back home with 6 trays of local pizza in a cooler in the back. You know I am hitting you up for a tray at the take-out sunroom in the rear of the building...or dine in....or in the West Side Club parking lot. I will take Cebula's however I can get it. What an amazing staff! The Pizza Chef was SUPER accommodating and stayed open to make us one more pizza before the place closed and we drove over an hour to get it. The place is old and out of style but holds a special charm about it. The local fare can be pretty loud and abrasive but that's what alcohol does to a person. They weren't that busy, & they have a small menu which is GREAT for the kitchen, I get it I used to work in 1. Yet to wait 45 minutes for the burger on "burger night" is insane! Not to mention no S&P on the table I had to get up & get it off the bar, the waitress only brought ketchup & never asked anything else, I don't use that. Anyway, I won't be back. Unorganized & sloooow! Unless you're ordering pizza, which seemed to come out quicker. I've been visiting this nostalgic nod to 1939 since my junior year in high school (1968) to enjoy its unique pizza's crisp and sometimes burnt crust and cheesy (non- mozzarell) topping. It WAS awesome stuff and unlike any other in NEPA. Later, as an adult, I enjoyed the convivial banter of fellow patrons, usual suspects, at the original 1939 bar as I awaited my weekly pizza order. Lately, however, inevitable changes surrounding new ownership have caused me to rethink my patronage. First, the new owners have established hours that have compelled sports fans to seek new venues. The 4-10 pm hours preclude patrons from watching early sporting events and cut short enjoying later ones. It's positively counterintuitive that the new people can't see the cash value of a bar filled with, for example, Notre Dame football fans in what was known as an area Notre Dame bar. I guess they need their sleep. Secondly, and most importantly, though the former owners trained the new in matters relative to offering patrons a consistent pizza product, the lessons were, unfortunately, lost on them. While the topping is consistent with the old, they have substituted a "cakey", metallic tasting and seemingly half baked crust for the crisp, well-done original. It's a poor substitute for the original that begs the question, "Why switch a proven winner and fan favorite with a tasteless substitute?" Perhaps the new owners, a younger couple, envision a cost savings in the new concoction. Perhaps they lack the wherewithal to duplicate the former owners' 54 year old traditional pizza taste. Whatever the case, whereas I may stop in in the future to say hello to the amazing server Chrissy, talk sports with Miggs, or share a shot with former owner and friend, Bobbie, I doubt that order pizza there. ........ unless, that is, the new owners get their act together and return to us the pizza that made Cebula's famous. read more

After reading a few reviews online, I thought I'd take the family to try the famous pizza in Dupont. This place is definitely sketchy and if you're intimidated by trying food from a 1950s style bar with original furnishings probably not the place for you. I really don't mind that sort of thing and was there for the pizza. After navigating through the front door around the bar with the kids in tow we found the dining room in the very back of the building. It's definitely a time machine as far as dining rooms go with the old fashion, vinyl, booths and chrome legged chairs and tables. This place literally hasn't had any updates since 1965 if I had to take a guess.That being said, the weight staff was really nice and when we asked for a white pizza oddly enough she said it would take over an hour to prepare, but if we wanted a regular red pizza, they could have that very quickly, except if we wanted any toppings which would take longer for some reason. We ended up settling on two plain pizzas and an order of chicken wing bites. After a bit of a wait, the chicken bites came out, which were boneless chicken chunks, slathered in wing sauce in a paper bowl. We we were given the cheapest possible paper plates to eat on, and when portioning out the chicken bites, the sauce drenched the cheap paper plates within seconds, which led to a pulpy saucey mess. The chicken bites themselves tasted pretty good, but nothing special. Next came the pizzas, or at least their version of pizza. Imagine cheese and sauce and barely cooked dough on a tray, that's what we got. Almost impossible to transfer a slice onto the cheap white paper plate and again the sloppiness of the pie soaked through the right through the plate. We had to ask for several extra paper plates to try to prevent a disaster. As far as the flavor goes, I really enjoyed the taste of the cheese and the sauce, but the crust was, well... not crusty and had to be eaten with fork and knife. The rest of my family didn't care for any of it and still talk about it months later, sort of jokingly and won't trust me to try new places anymore. I did read before we went that there was a relatively new owner, so hopefully it was just growing pains of getting the pizzas worked out, but I don't think I'll be back to find out . read more

Rated in the Top 5 places to eat in their area, on Trip Advisor, Cebulas offers a menu that is described by the locals as "the best kept secret in NEPA" Cebulas Pizza is Topped with a Secret Cheese Blend instead of Mozzarella,and isn't served with any toppings,it has a crispy bottom, and homemade crust (so if you are a simple cheese pizza lover this spot is for you!) The pizza is $2.25 per cut and $18.00 for an 8 cut tray. Since we read so many reviews on Facebook about their Pizza and Bula Bites (chicken bites named after the family's last name) we decided to give them a try! I preferred the Bula Bites over the Pizza. (I'm a wing lover). The Bula-Bites were tender and juicy, but my favorite part was size; these suckers are cut into pretty big chunks! I also loved the sauce I was drinking the remnants of what was left out of the bowl like soup! (Psst! It's also a great dipping sauce for the pizza!) This is not a fancy restaurant. It's a dive bar/glorified VFW with great pizza. Don't go to Cebula's and expect five star service, atmosphere or options. If you plan on going, sit at the bar, have a few Yuengling Lagers and order two pieces of pizza. Absorb the absurd conversations that happen around you and then move on to wherever your next destination may be. If you want cloth napkins, a salad fork, and for the wait staff to fall all over you like you're a king....you'll be better off at someplace where the rest of the patrons keep their noses in the air. I was born and raised with this amazing Polish pizza and it just does not get any better. No, this is not a fancy place and it is pricey. Think of your grandmother's kitchen for good, home cooked, quality food. It is a different type of pizza compared to the traditional pizza, but it is well worth the try. If you try and and are not a fan, don't worry! They have an array of other food items like boneless buffalo bites, burgers, sandwiches as well as reasonable bar prices. You want wholesome tradition? I love this "American style pizza", ever since my parents brought me here many years ago when I was just a young kid. It is an unusual square pizza with a thick, slightly heavy crust and a small amount of sweet tomato paste sauce covered in a thick yellow cheese. It only comes one way, no extras, because none are needed. It's a simple but "DELICIOUS" unique pizza that appears slightly unappetizing but perfectly pleasing to your palate. Two or three cuts will fill your stomach but save an extra slice or two for reheats the next morning for breakfast or for a hangover cure. If you tired of all those other assembly line, grease soaked trays of cardboard that are sold everywhere else, then trade up to Cebula's American style pizza ! read more

Cebula's has amazing pizza. The place has a full bar with a separate dining area. The menu is really limited but when your pizza is this good, you really don't have to sell anything else. However, if you must get something other than pizza, I would recommend a cheeseburger...I'm pretty sure they fry the burgers in peanut oil because they pack a ton of flavor. Additionally, it's not a modern place by any means. It's an old-fashioned joint with antlers and fish on the wall where Straub and Bud are free flowing. I used to love this pizza growing up but I pnly give it 2/5 stars because npw it's TOO EXPENSIVE!!! Almost $3 for a cut is outrageous

My boyfriend and I have been together a few years so I've had the pleasure of trying a variety of different NEPA-style pizzas. His family has been eating this pizza for years and every time we go up to visit, I insist that we get a tray of some type of pizza. There really isn't pizza like this back where we live (in Baltimore). Cebula's, so far, is MY FAVORITE. I didn't grow up with pizza like this, but they've really won me over. The slices are thick squares and covered with sweet pizza sauce and the gooiest, most delicious cheese you'll ever have. My boyfriend says the pizza looks like Freddy Kreuger's face and yes, he's right, but ignore the "look" of the pizza and just focus on the TASTE. The cheese is somehow really soft, but the edges crisp up after being in the oven. The sauce on the pizza is hearty, flavorful, and does have a tinge of sweetness, which I love. I believe that it's $18 a tray, slightly more expensive than other pizza places in the area, but it's definitely worth it. Also, they aren't open every day of the week so call ahead before you make the drive over. We usually place an order and it's ready in 20 minutes or so. I read all the other reviews I could find, I agree with the one who said people either love it or hate it, and I am one of those people that hated it. The first thing this pizza reminds me of is school cafeteria pizza or that Nardone Bros. Pizza you get in the square box at the super market. It's just bleh to me, the cheese is the kind that sticks to the roof of your mouth, there is a taste of flour on the bottom on the crust also that was very unappealing. The price was ridiculous for what I got, I could have gotten two of what I believe to be one of the best pizza's in NEPA for the price of one from here. On the other hand my sister loves it, but she also loves the Nardone Bros. Pizza. So I would say if you have similar taste, this pizza might be for you. But I absolutely disagree that this is anywhere near the best pizza in NEPA, far from it. read more

If you come to NEPA there are so many choices for good pizza. But there is one place that is truly the only pizza joint that can be labeled unique. And that is Cebula's. Breaking all preconceived notions of what pizza is, this Polish-style goodness differs every night. No two slices are alike. One night it an be airy and doughy. The next night it could be dense and chewy. The cheese - a mixture of some sort that must include cheddar and possibly American - is creamy and often delightfully slightly burned. The sauce sweet and stewy. And the burgers are homemade and fresh daily with now flavor. If you're a curmudgeon about pizza who only believes it can be round and uninteresting, this is not your place. If you are open minded and really want to experience something truly original and breathtaking, there is no other choice. read more
