I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. The food is thoughtful and complex, and unfortunately, that's just not for me. I can see why people enjoy it so much, though. Service was okay. Basically a teen at the register playing on her phone and a cook in the back. I wasn't really offered much of a greeting or an intro to the menu. It's a very limited menu as far as sandwiches are concerned (only six options.) I ordered The Superior minus kimchi with the spicy mayo on the side. I don't believe the menu mentions it, but the sandwich did come with a handful of fries. I took a seat in their cute dining area. It's decorated very nicely. It was a little chilly, though. I noticed a couple tables with trash on them that sat that way during my entire visit (all the while the cashier was on her phone.) Definitely room for improvement there. My sandwich was good; a little sweet for my liking. What I disliked was that there were tiny onions grilled with the steak, and those onions are not on the menu. I'd already wasted my lunch hour finding this spot, figuring out what to order and waiting for my food so I didn't bother saying anything or asking for a re-do. I just ate a few pieces of the steak and packed the rest up for my husband to have as leftovers. The quality of the steak was great and the fries were excellent. So, if you are all about limited menus and lots of ingredients, this might be the spot for you. It wasn't for me.

Service was prompt and friendly. It's tight inside, this is not the place to come with a big group- but a few friends or your family? Absolutely! Perfect. 4 stars because I just feel like the Reuben could have used a bit more flavor somehow. It was a little dry today. The bread was good, the meat was lean and thinly sliced, but I think we needed more punch from the sauerkraut and dressing. Still, will come back many times for years to come! Happy to have this in the area.

Their sandwiches are crazy-expensive, especially for the quality of the turkey. It was the slimy, smooth kind, not the more dry, you-can-see-the-grain-and-taste-the-quality kind. I got turkey and cheddar and it was $15, plus adding a drink and chips was $3 more. Hubband got the turkey and ham sandwich and said the ham was excellent but had the same gripe about the low quality turkey as me. Are they big, yes? Would I rather have less meat but it be much higher quality for the same price? Also yes. Decor hasn't changed in the almost 15 years since I visited. It's clean enough but still incredibly over-crowded with too many tables and chairs. Service was friendly. Honestly, this is just so underwhelming that I'm incredibly surprised that people are excited to drop $15 on a mediocre sandwich. I'm missing something (it must be nostalgia because I didn't grow up here.)

There's a small lot but you can park right there. It's right off of Michigan Ave so you really can't miss it but it is very small so you may not know what you're looking for. Just keep an eye out for it. They do have plenty of seats but it's not a full sit-down situation so I don't make it seem like you can bring a table of 20 in . They do have seats to sit in. There are countertops you can stand at but this is more likely a quick bite or to-go kind of situation. Even though there are people who do come in for the lunch break. But it's just basically tables and it's not a lot of frills or bells and whistles but it's still enough to have a bite to eat. The customer service is super nice and I was very taken care of and everybody was super friendly. As far as that goes that is something that has no issue . I ordered and it came pretty fast within 10 minutes so that was good. The service is quick but when I went it wasn't overly packed so that probably helped. Still it was good service and swift service as well . NY club - it was actually really good. It was very large and it got me right for lunch time for quite some time. It was put together very well and it didn't fall apart as soon as I picked it up. Turkey was warm and the sandwich was put together really well and the bacon made it pop . Cajun fries - the fries were crinkle cut and they came cajun seasoned to perfection . Would I go back? I sure would. Good customer service, solid product. Next time I go I'll probably end up getting a corned beef like I wanted to in the first place... The fries and onion rings were kinda cold, but the Cajun seasoning on the fries was good. I like the flavor shots you can add to your fountain soda. I went with the Crispy Cancun sandwich (fried chicken, chipotle aioli, pickles and roasted corn topped with cilantro on a challah bun) and the garlic parm fries. Everything was really good. The fries were doused in a lot of sauce and even a bit of garlic butter but miraculously they didn't get soggy. The sandwich was juicy and crispy and the bun and toppings went with it all perfectly. I went with the mild flavor as I can't do much spice these days and it was perfectly seasoned. I also went with one of their slushes, the apricot mango, and I LOVED it. I'd come back for that alone! Price is a bit on the higher side for fast casual, it was around $30 for all of it, but it was delicious and prices are going up everywhere these days so I get it and don't knock them for it.
