Melanie is absolutely awesome! I love her clothes, jewelry and kindness. I have asked her for items for fundraisers and she is extremely generous. I have had many outfits tailored by Melanie. I have one leg linger than the other and she fixed my clothes, altered my daughter's Grammy Gown at the last minute. She tells you upfront the cost so that you can choose to go to another tailor. Do you see any photos of up-close alteration work that proves quality level before and after alteration? Do you see any reviews that show the business's good faith practices when customer issues do arise? I recommend to be careful with these women, I noticed unethical business tactics to squeeze as much money as they can from a transaction if a customer doesn't notice a tiny sign, especially if they lead you to a different mirror where it is not displayed during a fitting. I see that I am not the first customer to be taken advantage of, they also charged another customer $1200 on a roughly $200 dress when she didn't see the tiny sign policy. Read further to see how they perform unethical tactics and shut down a customer who expresses grief and asks for help when it's addressed. It's normal to have a final sale sign if it's displayed in a reasonable size in a reasonably clear area, but the policy that customers must inquire price before leaving their clothes, without the business even mentioning a quote or providing a ticket, is suspicious. Never once told me how they charge for such a simple alteration. No words about cost, just smiles and an interest in what my husband does for a living. I thought I was dealing with a reputable business because of the area, I feel regret in misjudging them. Take a look for yourself and decide if this is attached to a sneaky Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell policy that leaves the customer in a tricky position if they're coming in for a simple alteration, or if they need to return a defective item. During the fitting, the woman stated it was a simple fix that would be quick, but when the time came to justify the cost, she said my dress was "defective" and needed more work. I never received a call to update me on this alleged problem, and I never gave permission to do any extensive work because that would mean higher cost on a cheaper dress. No transparency, no proper etiquette. She also forgot the agreed upon date of pick-up, I had to physically come in for check-up when they did not answer my voicemail. She said it was half-finished, still did not mention the claim of a "defect" that is not provable to this day. When they received my dress to have it shortened (my only request was to show my shoes), they not only failed to show my full shoes, they performed sloppy work that I could have done myself for free. Allegedly forgetting my date of pick-up, it left me needing to trust my husband to pay at pick-up while I worked, not understanding market-value cost of a shortened hemline on a simple satin dress. Even if I had inquired for a quote at drop-off, he still may not have known what is to be paid, there was no ticket provided. They took advantage of the situation, and when I politely reached out for them to justify the cost, the owner gave a sterile text and told me it was their final communication on the subject. I needed financial help from my family after this, the charge was significantly more than the cost of dress. When I came in person to ask them to do the right thing with my supportive family member, that I was unhappy with the quality of the work as well, the owners spoke a different language so that we wouldn't understand, refused to compromise, then called the police on us when they weren't able to justify the cost. Their reason was that we were "hostile." I don't know how standing up for yourself is hostile if we didn't raise our voices or resort to cursing at all. No cursing whatsoever, and if they have security cameras with audio, that would prove it. The officer sympathized with us and advised us to go to small claims court. We were simply dissatisfied customers and they seemed threatened when they could not explain themselves within reason. They also lied saying no one has ever had a problem with cost of alteration, but see for yourself in a previous review. I ultimately asked if she pulled the figure of cost from her butt without reason. Of course I was frustrated, I felt they stole my money and would not compromise when I politely tried. I didn't even expect a full refund. Now imagine purchasing from the shelves. You may find something is defective later, made from cheap materials that degrade, I wonder if the same tiny sign policy would affect you and your friends too. Something to think about! read more

The shop is quaint and the Daughter who is the owner was so patient helping me try several outfits and jewelry and really was confident in getting me something beautiful to wear . I was charged $1200 to stitch a $267 lehenga (Indian outfit). Any Indian person or person familiar with Indian clothing can tell you what they think about that. Moreover, she did not quote me before starting work (which she will tell you is my fault for not asking, and I take responsibility for that, but any professional charging anything CLOSE to this amount should know better and check with the customer beforehand). I chose this tailor because of the reviews for reasonable pricing, so I just trusted it would not be anything like this price, and because she said she had done these types of outfits before. The material was velvet and embroidered, so maybe difficult to work with, but $1200?! She did not add beadwork or anything, mind you -- only stitching. She claimed that it took 3 people 27 hours each to put the outfit together, and that she charges $15/hr. Anyone who is familiar with stitching a lehenga, as she claimed to be, would not take 80+ hours to stitch a top and skirt, velvet or not. So what happened was, I went into freeze mode and handed her my card and left with the lehenga. I would do ANYTHING to take that moment back, to just walk out of the store. We had been friendly right before, so maybe due to cognitive dissonance I didn't say something right then and there as I should have. I then called the 3 people closest to me and told them what happened, and all were flabbergasted. My mom came back alone and then with me and tried to reason with her, and she agreed to take $200 off, but no more. I never wore the lehenga to the event the next day. It's still sitting in its bag that she put it in, because I can't bring myself to wear it. I ended up recycling a fancy western dress to the event. So I now have a lehenga that cost $1000 to stitch that I will never wear. Lastly, Melanie made a lot of assumptions. One example is: she told me, when my mom and I went back in, "most of my customers know my prices" after I asked her how I would have known. I am a first-time (and last-time) customer, and the prices are not displayed anywhere. This is only one example, to name them all would be to double this review. Do not recommend, to say the least. Buy yourself a vacation instead. I will upload my pictures - of the lehenga, the receipts, my email (did not get a response back via email, so went into store). read more

The owner makes most of the clothing here and is a very sweet lady. She even offered to help me with any sewing projects I need help with. The reason I am writing this yelp review, which I have rarely done, is the following. I recommended a friend to Melanie at Aram's for alterations because there is no better! As most of us do now a days, she looked her up on Yelp. And my friend texted me to look at the Yelp Review which I did. I was flabbergasted that the person who posted the review regarding the creation of an Indian garment would ever dream to post something so outrageous. I can say from years of shopping at Melanie's / Aram's there is nothing further from the truth than anything that this woman posted. Aram's is a business that reminds you of how business was conducted years ago! Melanie, the owner, is beyond friendly and helpful. Her merchandise is priced fantastically. Her selection of clothes is for everyone -- from casual to dressy, all age, all shapes. The atmosphere is upbeat--- customers come in and it becomes a get together of friends automatically! In addition to the retail aspect, Melanie does incredible alterations. She is so meticulous and creative in how she approaches an alteration! And when I bring something in, that I am not sure why I bought in the first place(!) from another store, she has wonderful ideas on how to improve upon it and make it look just right for me! Melanie is able to get it right with her attention to detailed alterations so that it has even improved how the garment was purchased in the first place!. She is a creative and awesome seamstress. No better person to take that worn out pair of jeans you cannot part with or that dressy outfit that is classic, expensive but needs some alterations due to losing a few pounds or gaining a few! LOL! She is a totally professional seamstress. Whether Shopping or having g alterations there is like a mini vacation for me --- its visiting an old friend who makes you feel special and welcomed. So, it is astonishing to read such a review by Nisha---- she must be in a creative fiction writing class at a junior college because Melanie goes out of her way to please, could not be more friendly, generous with her time and creative energy. And sad that someone has that much anger and hateful thoughts toward a genuine kindhearted human being as Melanie. And for Nisha to think that sewing a Lehenga (which I have attended 2 weddings where they were worn) is a simple act of stitching, then why didn't she take her project to a dry cleaner who always has some one there to do hems and sew a button on! And in addition, does Nisha, understand that working with heavy beaded material is difficult? Before someone condemns someone they should understand what is involved and the craft. Obviously, Nisha is someone who thinks being a seamstress of the quality that Melanie is, is easily found--- if so, as I said, she should have gone to a dry cleaner or better yet, to Bangladesh and I am sure she could have found a child to sew her Lehenga! And the price to match her budget, and if budget is what she is only concerned with, then she would not be concerned with child exploitation either. Nisha, Please don't bother uploading photos of your Lehenga---- those unfamiliar can just Google one and learn what is involved. And then your silly posting will be even more silly. My friends and I who do shop there after lunching next door, did find it odd that an event that you would wear a Lehenga to, you would substitute a "fancy" Western dress. Oh my! Lana does a wonderful job as a tailor and I presume as a seamstress. She altered several pairs of my suit pants and repaired a pair of slacks with a small hole beautifully.
