This is the only store I will shop at for my freshwater fish. I have never once brought a disease home from adding a fish from this place & I have been shopping here for years. I enjoy the diverse selection of fish they showcase & the tanks are always beautifuly aquascaped with real plants & bogwood. I'm a new fish mom to a wonderful betta that my friend Jason gave me and I knew the only place to go to set him up with everything he needs was Aqua Serene. I can't believe how big this place is! I was a little apprehensive walking through the doors but after wandering to the back I realized how totally awesome this place was. There's so much to look at! I feel like a kid in a candy store. On the outside I may look like a composed lady but in the inside I'm spazzing out. What's that? What's this? Whoa! Cool! Koi! A kind employee helped me out for a good thirty minutes picking out the right stuff for King Leonidas (my betta). We looked at all sorts of things from plants, heaters, cleaners and gravel. Everything you see in the fish tanks are for sale. I bought a beautiful piece of wood with a plant attached to it. I'm very satisfied with my experience and will come back again to ooh and aah at the koi pond. read more

Don't waste your time if your into Saltwater. They have almost no live aquaria, old dry goods and people that don't have a clue about Saltwater. Bad part is when I got into this hobby they were well stocked and the people were some of the most knowledgeable around. read more

Aqua Serene is my personal happy place. I just got home from buying some plants for my tank. (I am going to start aquascaping [very exciting] ). The guy that helped me today was SO passionate about aquarium plants and he really talked to be about everything I needed to know. He even demonstrated for me how to plant the plants, how to fertilize, I mean he went above and beyond just selling me the plants that I wanted. He really educated me about what I was doing and where I can go from there! This is NOT my 1st AMAZING experience with Aqua Serene. I never leave with a question unanswered. My pet crawfish, Mr. Pinchy, was on the brink of death but wouldn't give in. I hated watching him suffer so I called the store to see if they had any recommendations and they couldn't have been nicer. Rene offered to euthanize Mr. Pinchy for me so I wouldn't have to do it myself. They were very sensitive to my situation and made his passing a lot easier on me. This store is highly overpriced and the not to mention the people are ignorant and rude. Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars here until recently when I had to deal with the rudeness. But at least they made me find a better place to shop. I don't recommend going here unless you want to be treated like crap, when you can go not even a mile away and get a way better deal at constant gardener. I've been occasionally popping in here for the last year or two and after spending years keeping fish, it's been apparent since day one that they keep a super healthy supply of livestock and plants, way more so than your average store. They also cater to both beginners and high end keepers of aquaria, which is awesome. I've also recently been frequenting the hydroponic side of the business, and found the folks working there to be friendly, kind and extremely helpful The reason for my review is to thank them for also understanding customer service. I purchased a product recently that had a defect I didn't see initially. I was apprehensive they might think I damaged the product, but when I arrived, they remembered me, took care immediately and swapped the product for a new one. Thanks especially to Andrew for being knowledgeable and understanding what customer service really is. If you have any hobbies involving water whether it's gardening or keeping fish, this place has you covered. They also have a selection of golden Buddhas and other art pieces and imports. The people here really know their stuff and it's fun to stop in just to check out all their awesome fish. I come here on the regular and wouldn't shop anywhere else. read more

I used to love this store and still kind of do but after seeing the betta fishes that are in bigger tanks together with other types of fishes with the water flowing really high both of these things betta fishes hate and get stressed out and by the way you can actually see clearly by just looking at that poor betta fish with very obvious stress stripes and i seen another betta at one bottom tank with their fins incredibly damaged it was a pretty sad trip .. Really surprised to see negative reviews for this place. We discovered Aqua Serene early this spring when we were starting to plan our garden. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful whenever we've gone in. Everyone has been extremely knowledgeable and open to answering our endless questions and giving great advice and guidance about our garden. I know if I have a question, that's always a place I can go where someone will do their best to help me find a solution or the right product for my needs. Aside from that, it's just a great place to look around. Our kids like wandering and looking at all the fish and plants. Everything is always super clean and well taken care of. They have an awesome selection of pond plants as well. It's really become one of our favorite stops for garden needs over the last year. Like the uniqueness of this business. It's not just an aquarium / fish store. They have statuaries for outdoor garden, tanks, pumps, drift woods, ponds, aquatic plants, and of course, fresh and salt water fish. The only thing I thought could be made better is their display. The store is fine, the staff mostly ignores you unless you chase them down. It has hermit crab shells, tank supplies, etc. Unfortunately, they have joined the w11 anti- EMX brigade with their 10,000 signs informing me just how little they need my business. I take the bus. William Oelke 1 star I received very poor customer service. Arriving at the store employees were at the registers talking and laughing, not greeting or recognizing customers in any manner. I asked for help finding some items and 1 employee out of the 4 rudely pointed towards an area and quickly went back to the conversation as if I had some nerve to interrupt them. My other issue is their pricing, each time I shop here I receive different prices at the register for the same goods depending on the employee that rings me up. After speaking to the manager Gary I was informed this is common in the industry. It seemed like an excuse so I asked for some clarification as to why inconsistencies in the industry made it okay for them to do the same. Gary said he didn't recognize me and they only give discounts to people they recognize, usually based on large purchases. But, Gary also admitted that employees have a great deal of power when it comes to pricing and some employees are much quicker to lower prices at the register. Again, this shows inconsistencies with their pricing. My bigger concern is this practice could lead employees to give bigger discounts to friends and family while possibly acting on prejudices to keep prices higher for people they don't know, or just don't like. Imagine 2 people walk in and buy the same goods, both their first visits, but one person gets a better discount on their goods. Now maybe that's an issue, or maybe it's not. But what if each person is of a different race, sex, age, or any other difference. Now you definitely have an issue with discrimination read more

I called in about an hour ago looking for some Monte Carlo cup culture. I spoke to an employee named Trey who was extremely rude over the phone. When I asked if they had the plant in stock he cut me off and said no and that he's too busy. I asked him to just check as I live in Portland and would have to drive two hours to the store. I waited on the phone for him just to reply "no" one more time and was hung up on. Called a local store in Portland who is going to be setting aside the cup cultures I need. You just lost a customer. Previously purchased several flagship ADA products and was looking forward to purchasing more, but after that brief interaction we had on the phone no thank you!! The staff is friendly and personable, focused on matching exactly what you need with their tremendously large selection of products. They don't steer you to high-end products just to make a sale, they help you save money. They also are deeply knowledgeable about seemingly everything. The combo of gardening and aquarium stuff means that there are lots of supplies for crossover. They carry high-end aquascape equipment (ADA, etc.), as well as plenty of supplies for DIY stuff, so it is possible to use this store to set up any price-range of aquarium, I think. Aquariums always look clean and there's no smell; animals and plants seem ok. Staff have always been informed and friendly every time I've shopped here and interested in asking questions about what my plans are, what my current set-up is, etc., to help me make sure that I make informed choices. read more

He's potentially the most knowledgable "fish guy" I've met in a tropical fish store. He's given me lots of great advice, and the prices in the store are competitive. I have visited this shop many times of the years and one thing has persisted--- Horrible customer service! I recently set up a new pond and went in to buy a pump. It was not a busy day at the shop yet, the employees couldn't be bothered to greet me. The employee that I approached acted annoyed that I wanted assistance. She was not personable nor helpful. I ended up buying a pump that did not work when I got home. When I tried to return it, they made up every excuse why it didn't work and tried to send me home with the same pump. When I asked for a refund, the employee became visibly upset and was rather rude. I will NEVER go into this establishment again. I've def shopped around and this is by far the worst shop in the area. The employees have no idea about the products they are selling nor do they actually try to help you out. I went in to buy a water filter only to have an employee tell me he didn't use one so I didn't need one. Well that lost the company a solid $200 sale. My next trip in was for a vent fan. I asked if one could be plugged in so I could feel the airflow and compare it to my older model. Simply plugging in this fan would have almost guaranteed another $150+ sale, yet it was too much for the girl to handle. She gave me the excuse that each brand has a different output. All ya had to do was show me ANY brand which outperformed my model! Good luck with this shop. This store has a lot of great products and fish. However, there are some on the staff that need an attitude adjustment. You have to ask for help, one question is answered and the clerk walks away like you are not worth her time. I will be going somewhere else for help just for the fact of the poor customer service. Very helpful staff especially Shawn. We bought out first aquarium 125 gallon last fall and have since added a 72 gallon bow, 110 high and a 35 gallon hexagon. Shawn has been so helpful and informative in our quest to learn as much as we can about fresh water fish.
