A lost tradition no thanks to the legions of foul smelling Wal-Mart's that co-opted the principles that were important between a customer and the shop keeper. The store is beautifully organized with a replete selection of gifts, bulk bird (and wildlife) feed and some amazing bird feeders that are manufactured in the U.S.A. I was truly touched by the insightful conversation that I had with one of the owners who shared with me an experience rarely had, and truly cherished, thus signifying the importance of supporting our local businesses and the families that run them. What I admire the most is that they support conservation (with real money rather than words) which is important to me.

I prefer to get my suet from Wild Birds Unlimited because the quality is good and I know I am not feeding the birds some hidden ingredients that might not be good for them. Well, to my great surprise I got a call from Barbara and Dan Gleason, the owners. of the Eugene store to let me know they were on their way to my house with the suet! Wow!! Now that's the quickest turn around time ever!! And I live 15 miles from the store in Eugene! To all who love to feed the birds, I highly recommend ordering from them. If you live outside of the city call a few of your friends and neighbors and make a group order that will be delivered quickly! Thank you Dan and Barbara!!

I received helpful ideas and suggestions for solving some challenges with setting up feeders at my home. I did end up spending a lot on the equipment, and the seed is not cheap, but it's great quality feed that my bird customers love, so to me, it is well worth the somewhat higher price. They carry a very nice quality and assortment of feeder equipment. After some trial and error, I was able to get two feeders set up, and me, my family, guests and of course indoor cat are enjoying watching hummingbirds, finches and sparrows at the feeders. Staff have been helpful and friendly and if not too busy, will also give great insights and advice on the types of local birds and their habits. For example, I did not know that a hummingbird can live up to around 12 years! Or that they can be very territorial if they find a feeder that they like. Also, I did not know that you can order online and they will deliver? I only learned that by reading others' helpful reviews, so that might be something for staff to mention. It is a nice plus. Overall enjoy shopping here and appreciate their helping me get the bird-watching and feeding set up.

I recently went in to buy some seed cylinders and suet. The person who helped me was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. She showed me products I wouldn't have noticed if on my own. Also, she had a bunch of great suggestions based on my situation, which was starting bird feeding in a new location. It all turned out to be great advice. I now have birds at my feeders every day, and I am delighted (as is my indoor cat). I highly recommend this place for great service and great selection!

As someone who has volunteered at the California Raptor Center in Davis, CA for 3 years (and counting) and is also a primary handler/trainer of two education ambassadors (a Swainson's Hawk and a Peregrine Falcon), as well as an aspiring falconer, I am pretty well-versed in raptors. Therefore, Cascades Raptor Center was a no-brainer stop on our trip. It was a pretty warm day, as OR had just experienced a heat wave. The raptor center overall was very well-kept, with over 30 education ambassadors on display. All the enclosures were very clean and organized. There were various trainers in several enclosures working with their respective birds when we went, and one volunteer even had a peregrine falcon out on glove for the public to enjoy up close and to ask questions about. We actually made it just in time for the last flight show of the season, and boy was it a blast!! Hans the Eurasian-Eagle-Owl was the star of the show, but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire program. As you can see in the photos below, I snapped some lovely shots of the birds with my DSLR. Here I am sharing some of my favorites. The admission fee was worth it, especially as the raptor center mainly functions from donations. We also shopped at the little gift shop after for some mementos to take home. I would love to revisit on our next trip to OR!
