    receipt from vet

I'm writing this to discourage people from bringing animals to Old Mill to be sold due to the extreme animal suffering I witnessed. January 30th, 2023 I saw a VERY sick angora rabbit at Old Mill Feed. I asked owner Debbie what was going on with her. She replied, and I could tell she hadn't taken her to the vet. SO the next day (tuesday) I called her and said I would like to adopt the rabbit and I had made a vet appointment for same day (tuesday). She was happy, and she said she had called clinics several days ago and been offered weekday appointments but hadn't taken one because, "I can't take animals to the vet during the week because of my work schedual." Could she really not get away for one hour in order to save this rabbit's life? Her husband could of ran the shop by himself. The rabbit had been suffering for days. Just to look at her face was so deeply disturbing to me because how she suffered was written all over her face by the days of runny nose and weeping eyes. Under the eyes and mouth there was fur that was clumped thick rock hard from days of tears and snot running down. I didn't even know how I would get that loosened. The nose was red and raw and peeling up around the edges. One eye was hairless around it. Her breathing was labored. Her eyes were not wide anymore because she'd been so sick. She was underweight (weighed 2.6 lbs). The vet told me she had a severe infection. The vet asked me if I'm up for the amount of care I would need to give this rabbit. I told her I have to do it, I don't have a choice. She said you can either euthenise her or give her a fighting chance. She told me she might die. She told me her temperature was low and dropping and that I would need to put her in an 80 degree room. She gave me antibiotics, eye drops. I would have to force feed her Critical Care which is a mush food you make for rabbits who are not eating and you give it to them with a syringe. And she told me to buy nose drops that would help clear the nasal passages. I took the rabbit home and did these things. That night she took a turn for the worse. Her breathing became more labored and she was sitting at the cage door like in a panic having to work so hard for each breath. It was horrible and this will always haunt me. I thought about euthenasia. But I had a feeling she was close to death and might not make it to the vet due to the stress and the wait time at the vet. It was shortly after having these thoughts that she suffocated infront of me. It is a horrible way to die. The suffering she went through and the horrible death could have been prevented if Debbie would of taken her to the vet early on. The rabbit could of lived. No innocent little creature should have to endure that kind of suffering and that horrible of a death. I am so mentally tormented by witnessing her suffer and die, I don't even know how I will ever get past it. I lose sleep at night because all I do is think about the suffering this poor rabbit endured. It is such a shame she would lose her life this way when she could of lived a long happy life with someone who loved her. She was such a beautiful white rabbit and so special and I loved everything about her. Everyone knows that Debbie is a nice person but this doesn't excuse the neglect of an animal by not taking her to the vet when it was so obvious she needed help. By the time I met this rabbit she'd been sick too long to the point that she couldn't recover. Wednesday Debbie called me to ask how it went at the vet. I told her the rabbit died tuesday night. She told me that I could send her the bill and she would pay me back. This goes to show that she could have afforded to take the rabbit to the vet herself. This angora rabbit had been abandoned in a box on the doorstep of Old Mill by an unknown person.

I moved away from Cottage Grove and still like to come here when I can to see Deb & Chuck and stock up on supplies!
