Great service and selection! We also had pictures with the Grinch taken yesterday and that was fun. Thank you, Chris.

Ask the Community - McKenzie Feed and Tackle

Do they have a vegan section for feeding animals a vegan diet?

For feed which sort of animals? Pet and livestock feed isnt typically labeled as vegan or not. We have organic and non gmo chicken feed for example, but it doesnt describe itself as vegan.

Hometown Pets - I was actively trying to breed this docile female Goliath before they let her die.

Hometown Pets

They killed our $500 mature female breeding tarantula. Who was special for breeding because she was…read moreextra docile. And customers wanted her babies. THEIR ONLY POSITIVES: 1 extra star just for Jordanna. We will admit their animal care products and prices are decent, and there's a selection. Jordanna is an honest employee and well learned. But I do not recommend this place for anything after the way they let their own animals and other animals die. They had a store parrot who they let die. That shoulda been a sign to us. WHAT HAPPENED: My son and I boarded our tarantulas with hometown pets while we are moving. It was 2 weeks. He paid $40 a week every week. He gave explicit instructions that 3 of them are Goliath tarantulas who need water every single day. "She needs her plastic water dish filled every day or she will die in 48 hours." Their hired employees said they absolutely knew about Goliath tarantulas. I believe they do. But the owner, Jim, he *NEPOTISM HIRES HIS OWN FAMILY TO DO WORK WITHOUT RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE OR DILIGENCE*!!! And more than once I've encountered that the wife & son don't learn about the animals and literally 'do not read.' Can't answer my questions. My son noticed they did not observe the instructions on the cage or the hazard warnings made visible for the employees safety if they simply WERE uninformed. I can see them in the video. They are not wearing gloves or being cautious. "No bare hands. Danger hairs." Is written all over the cage. Jordanna spoke to my son and knew exactly what he was talking about. She knew about Goliaths and said she would make sure everyone else knew. But when the wife spoke to my son I couldn't tell what she was asking, but she seemed totally oblivious. And when he came to pay the second week he found her dead because they didn't water the goliath tarantula for 4 days. We had to retrieve the tarantulas from hometown pets and try keeping them safe in a van instead. THEIR HISTORY AND OPINION OF GENERAL BEHAVIOR: This place literally bought up every non-corporate pet store in Eugene/Springfield. They shut down and sold off anyone they didn't convert into a chain store. They have complete monopoly on pet stores that aren't either PetCo or Petsmart. There used to be at least 3 different stores in town between Pet Time, Zany Zoo, and Bobcat Pets. Now there's only hometown pets. And they're halfways incompetent and the owner is manipulative. He has a hell of a poker face and puts on a businessman act like a pro. But zero sympathy was given when our tarantula was killed. My son said they tried to humiliate him for "screaming and crying in the back room." The owner Jim is basically Buck Strickland from "King of the Hill." Jordanna is Hank Hill who actually runs the place and makes things look confident & professional. You can trust what Jordanna and Jayden say. You can trust the store products. Their prices are good. Their terrariums are their best product. bread and butter. But never trust them with the safety of something you love. You'll set yourself up for absolute heart-break. My son is not doing ok. I'm still upset too. Or maybe just go to Walmart or Petsmart since there's a stupid monopoly on privately owned pet stores.

They have better quality pet food than you can get at the big box stores, though they don't carry the grain-in kibble brand I've been feeding for the past few years. I supplement with fresh meat and vegetables and yes, my dog is pampered, but I wasn't ready to switch base kibble brands, and I only saw grain-free options on the shelf. The lone employee was basically polite but not too helpful. I found some treats and shampoo for my dog, but otherwise had to go elsewhere.

Not after today. I brought 1 out of my many dogs in to pick up some training treats. He is only 6 months old. The clerk working approached very quickly/closely to me and my dog. and caught my dog off guard and he nervous peed slightly. The Clerk asked if I wanted to take him outside. So I did to the grass to finish his accident. I returned to pay for the treats and leave. However the clerk yelled at me and my dog not to come back into the store and to leave the dog outside. I calmly informed him I will never be going back to this store again. My puppy had a nervous accident. And it is way too hot outside to leave a pet outside. Especially a black puppy. The clerk furthered the bad experience for my dog and for myself. We both deserved to be treated kindly and with respect.

This particular store however, clean- bright- smells good and pro staff that are smart, fast and friendly. Makes the shopping experience a 10! I'm thrilled I can find everything I need in one place. I'm a loyal customer now. Have 4 picky diva cats, one happy red heeler pup- they sell all quality food for tight budgets all the way to top shelf needs. I'm not sure if they have prescription diet though, maybe call before. Prices are competitive if not sometimes a tad bit more but they offer a punch card. Honestly, even if they didn't offer that, I'd gladly pay the small difference to shop where you feel they care about your experience and time. Thank you MPM for giving me a place to go and get away from ..... :) Side note: The location is a bit of a puzzle at first for entry and depart. On a fast street with blind corner, once you figure it out though, it's not an issue.
