My husband and best friends surprised me with a birthday dinner! Overall I had a lovely time, and it was truly a memorable experience. I will note that the seating is a bit awkward and could be uncomfortable for bigger people or a larger group overall. My husband and I also arrived a few minutes after our friends--our friends already and drinks but it took about 20 min before anyone took our drink order (and we were the first group in the restaurant for dinner). Aside from that, it was a great experience! The cheese & charcuterie were delicious. We also ordered 2 tins of caviar and loved them!!! I appreciated that the server brought us some chips to eat in addition to the waffles. I also asked if I could keep one of the tins as a keepsake (the dinner was a surprise for my birthday), and I'm pretty sure he dug the tin out of the trash for me This is such a special place for a date night or intimate dinner or drinks with friends. read more

I believe my experience is consistent with several reviews here. Good food & wine list, but terrible service. We walked in when the place initially opened and were treated well - since we were the only two people there. We ordered a bottle of wine and appetizers. When things started to get busy, we noticed that no one had cleaned our area or asked us if we needed anything (even the check) in a while. We were at the bar, so you have to intentionally ignore us when we're making eye contact and saying "excuse me." Eventually I got one bartender's attention, ordered two cocktails and he begrudgingly said "sure." At that point, I should've said "never mind" and left, but I didn't - and that's my mistake. Somehow it gets worse. We were finished, and let me add - with the same dirty plates in front of us. We needed our bill so we could LEAVE. I asked a woman, she said "sure" again - unhappy to get us anything. Still - no check. I had my credit card out, kept trying to get someone's attention. Maybe 15 minutes later, a different bartender finally gave us our check. I should add that he apologized for how long the check took. This was not the same bartender as before. The ambience was great, but being ignored for an extended period of time was not an ideal experience. Apparently ~$200 on a pre-dinner drink/bite isn't enough for attention at this place. I felt like absolute crap after this experience and wish I never gave them a dime. Don't go here. There's plenty of other places in the area with better service (although it doesn't take much to be better than this place). read more

Wow, wow, wow...This place is fantastic. The food, decor and service were top notch. We started off with the deviled eggs and they were amazing. I like that the filling wasn't heavy on mayo and the perfect amount of bacon and chives on top. Then came the mussels, these were probably some of the best ever but the star of this dish was the wine broth. They brought us extra bread and spoons cause we couldn't let this go to waste. If there weren't people in the restaurant, we may have just drank it from the bowl. Two of us ordered the burger, it was cooked perfectly medium with goey cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms and Dijon mustard. It's by far one of the best burgers I've ever had. Others had the Belgian Waffle which was pretty and according to my friend was very good, and the Eggs Benedict was lovely as well. I'm not much of a dessert person but did try a bite of both. I liked the bread pudding more than the mousse. I thought the orange in the mousse was a little overpowering for me but the birthday girl really enjoyed it. We stopped by on Sunday morning looking for a bathroom and a coffee and found this gem of a spot. Great pastries (ham and cheese and mini chocolate croissants), great iced lattes, and a super nice staff that was warm and conversational. The bartender even made my child a lemonade (not on the menu) and gave her a taste of nonalcoholic rose for free! We sat at a table in front. We didn't try the prepared food but the menu looks great and we'll definitely be back. read more

I was so disappointed that the chef decided to take the award-winning coq au vin off the menu. That dish was "lick your plate" good. Who does that? That was the sole reason I made the reservation. I will definitely check the menu before returning. The chicken paillard is the replacement chicken dish and it is truly nothing special -- just a mis-named chicken breast with cream sauce. I only ate a few bites of it. The caviar service with chips is still a hit. My husband's duck confit was very good. The bread pudding was not good; the mille feuille was nothing special. read more

I enjoyed having lunch here. There is street parking, and the place is right off the corner. I ordered caviar, and had the bartender pair it with a red wine. The presentation was well done, served with chips and waffles. The caviar was shown to me and opened in front of me. I also ordered the figs, both dishes were delicious. They have a happy hour which I missed since I arrived a little earlier then when it started. I gave 4 stars instead of five because of the atmosphere. I sat at the back bar which was a little dark, but I ate alone and didn't want to take a table. I would recommend this place and return. read more

The only difference between a cozy gem and a pretentious scam is quality of service. I'm going to echo the other recent reviewers here: I've never spent so much money only to feel like I don't matter at all. I've lived around the corner from Apéro for over a year but I had only stopped in for drinks a few times. Money has been tight so I was waiting for a special occasion to come in for dinner. All in all, it was over $500 for three of us, which I know isn't big bucks for Apéro but for me it was a HUGE splurge on a long anticipated experience. New Years Eve rolled around, and the four course pre fixe menu seemed like the perfect opportunity to dine in. We made a 9:15 reservation -- but after awkwardly standing in the way and being told "five more minutes" every so often, they finally sat us at 10 PM. I immediately asked our server if it was even possible to be out by 11:15 or so, as we had committed to being elsewhere for the toast. The waiter, unaware that they had kept us waiting 45 mins already, correctly pointed out that a four course menu is meant to be enjoyed slowly. I couldn't agree more -- had there been more transparency or if we hadn't paid a $150 deposit, I think we all would have opted to come back another night. (To the waiters credit, he tried his best. To the kitchens credit, the soup was the best I've ever had. The rest was good, not outstanding. I think, didn't have a lot of time.) I made it a point to remain positive with the staff and with my party, I didn't want to kill the vibes for everyone. I also know how much it sucks to be working in the service industry on a holiday. We didn't ask to be comped anything, nor did they offer anything. It did irk me that they were passing out the "complimentary midnight toasts" just as we were calling an Uber to meet our friends. They could have poured ours early just in case they succeeded in making us miss the toast we committed to. The real reason I'm complaining right now is because they forgot to credit the $150 reservation deposit to our final bill, and in our rush to leave, I didn't notice until the next day. I stopped by Tuesday (before the dinner rush), with my confirmation and receipt, and politely explained the charge and offered my feedback on our experience. They assured me that the feedback was appreciated and that "next time" will be better. By Saturday the deposit had not been credited back to my account, so I called at 11 am. The person who answered assured me that the manager would be in soon and, at the very least, someone will call me back that day. Saturday went by, then Sunday went by--no refund, no calls. So on Sunday evening I sent an email to the only address I could find. At that point I just needed to submit the request in writing in order to streamline contesting the charge with my CC company. Monday evening I got an automated email stating that my 12/31 reservation "had been cancelled" and my deposit was being returned. I wanted to be able to go back for that "next time," so I waited two full business days before posting this review in order to give Apéro an opportunity to respond. I didn't expect much, but I was hoping they'd acknowledge at least one of the mistakes: lack of transparency about the overbooked reservation or forcing me to submit three requests before they'd correct a significant overpayment. But they obviously don't want me to come back. read more

This is ultimate definition of cosy neighborhood bar (you could almost imagine moving in, or at least wanting to!) - it really is, but also so much more. The decor and ambience are super-sleek and suave, but because the staff are so lovely, ultra-helpful, friendly and down-to-earth, it's not pretentious or 'stiff'. Best of all is that I don't know of any other place in town that serves up Laurent Perrier by the glass (one of my favorites), and at a very reasonable price too. The snacks are good too - I wasn't a fan of the gougeres (I've been spoilt on Daniel Boulud's), but the mushroom cigarettes are fabulous (and I don't even like mushroom normally) - inventive, packed with flavor and texture. I'll be back. As the chefs-de-cave say in France, when is the best time to drink champagne? Always! Thank you team for 'democratizing' champagne, and for a great addition to DC. read more

What a lovely, vibrant addition to Georgetown. The melt-in-your-mouth pappardelle limone with creme fraiche and caviar might be my new favorite pasta dish in all of DC. My spouse ordered the mushroom "cigarettes" and wanted to order another round. The cocktails, especially the Old Georgetown, are outstanding and not overly sweet. An overpriced and disappointing brunch. The 1st issue is that the brunch menu doesn't seem to have any of the creative dishes on their dinner menu (such as the mushroom cigarettes & pate waffles). Instead, it is just very banal benedicts, avocado toasts, parfaits, etc. The 2nd and more concerning issue is what you do get for brunch is way way overpriced. A subpar croque madame sandwich w/no sides for $22? 3 1/2 portions of deviled eggs (so 1.5 eggs total) for $9? Because of the lack of creativity and price points, I left here with the distinct impression this place exists to try to make money, as opposed to trying to share interesting food with the world, and that type of place will never get a good review from me. Course reviews below: 1) Deviled Eggs (2/5) - 1.5 eggs total with nothing distinctive for $9. Pass. 2) Black Truffle Gougeres (4.5/5) - The one thing in our meal that was quite delicious. The bread was hollow and melt in your mouth with a nice subtle kick of black truffle. If this was a tiny bit hotter and w/some accompanying cooler sauce, it would be a 5 for sure. 3) Crispy Potato Waffle, Onion Creme Fraiche, Gravlax (plus supplementary caviar) (2/5) - This "waffle" ended up being a square of hash brown topped by a forgettable creme fraiche (which is hard to accomplish) and gravlax (which was ok). The biggest problem was the $22 supplementary caviar was TINY (see my pic). Having purchased Osetra caviar before, this was a HUGE ripoff of a portion (and goes back to my big issue that this place seems to exist to just make money off you). 4) Croque Madame (1/5) - At $22, this is one of the worst purchases for the price point I've ever made. See my pic for the size of this. Nothing about the taste was special. No sides. Complete fail. The one other issue is that we were sitting outside (by choice, because we had a dog) in 30 degree weather, and though our server was very friendly & attentive early in the meal, she disappeared at the end. I had to go inside to find someone, and when I asked another server for the check, she never followed up on it. So back inside I went a second time and at the bar counter, the gentleman there literally said "Oh, I didn't realize anyone was outside." Meanwhile, our initial server was in the back having what appeared to be a business meeting. So yep, we were totally forgotten in 30 degree weather. Not a good impression Apero... read more

Cozy spot with a tiny bar conducive to conversation, on a block around the corner from Rose Park in Georgetown. There's also a charming patio in the back. I've enjoyed coming for drinks after work and sampled some of the wines by the glass on offer. Try the Vouvray or the Riesling if you want something refreshing on a hot, summer evening. Have not tried much of the food but the mushroom cigarettes are delightfully served, tasty, and fairly substantial. In all, a welcome addition to the neighborhood with a quieter vibe than what's on offer on M Street or in Georgetown Harbour. read more

The good: Decor is nice although it's a small place. Don't bring big groups. But for groups of 4 or less it's nice and cozy. Service was friendly. The food was excellent (short rib, halibut). Flavors were solid and the portion was decent. The not as good: as someone else said, the menu is clunky. Seems to me they should have a separate drink menu or separate caviar menu. In dim light I wont' even make it to page 2. The manager clearly pushes the caviar. I get it, it's in their name. But it's a bit of a waste of their time to pitch it to people that are there for the food and drinks. Might want to ask upfront if diners are interested in the caviar. The wine pours were small for the price. I would definitely go back for the food and ambiance. I only suggest they refine their menu to make it simpler for both the patrons and the server. read more

Best meal during our 5 day trip in DC. Had the "mushroom cigarettes" as appetizers and steak and Coq au van as our mains. Flavors were delicious. Creme brûlée was the favorite dessert. Wait staff was personable with good recommendations, including an amazing beaujolais (red) wine. The space was cozy and intimate - set in a neighborhood in Georgetown with lots of locals who are on a first name basis with the staff. Felt like we stumbled into a party of friends, who warmly included us. Also, owner helps the staff to cover their health insurance. What's not to like? Can't wait to go back. read more

Decent food and a gorgeous setting, but the awful service ruined our experience. I have never spent that much money to be ignored and treated like a burden. My husband and I had such a hard time getting our server's attention, and when we did, she acted annoyed that we were ordering. It made me feel really self conscious - like I wasn't rich or cultured enough to be there (even though my bill was over $275 for two people). We will not go back. In every regard Apero is indifferent. The mains - fish and cog au vin - sat atop purées and veg that were stone cold. I suspect that they set up the sides and then just left them out until the main was done. Mussels were better but quite oversalted. And the whole experience was made unpleasant when we were put in a cramped, uncomfortable table for two and when we asked to move to one of the empty larger tables we were told they were all reserved for parties of four. Would be understandable but for the fact that over the next 20 minutes each of those tables was filled by parties of two. When asked about that we were told that all the people who had reserved those tables suddenly canceled. Quite remarkable that in the space of 20 minutes all the parties for those specific tables decided to cancel. I don't buy it. We won't be going back, especially because DC has so many remarkable restaurants to enjoy. Thank you for your offer of a meal upstairs but we will pass. There are so many notable bistros in DC now - Lutece, Chez Billy Sud and Pastis to name a few - that it doesn't make sense for us to return. One further note about this year service - Damali was lovely and we tipped her over the mandatory 20% service. But the woman who managed the floor was absolutely horrible - sneering, insincere and condescending. I suggest that she get additional training on customer treatment. This was the worst experience I've had at a restaurant that I can remember. We had a 7pm reservation for two. We were not sat til 8pm. Zero apology. There was no hostess at the door for a lengthy period of time. They were completely dismissive to the fact we had a reservation - "oh some tables are just staying a bit longer". Again, zero apology, "yeah it's the holidays, things can get kinda busy here" - so arrogant how they played it off. They had TOTALLY overbooked their TINY restaurant, and they should know better given their size- there are very few tables. It was a power play on their part. People were waiting the whole night and they didn't have enough staff. But what was the worst part was the woman - Corin (something like this- can't recall her name but she was messy, abrasive, and rude and the only woman working there if management is reading this). She ushered my friend upstairs after she waited a while at the host stand, and told us we HAD to sit upstairs at La Boheme (the area of their tasting menu where there was literally NOT a single person else was sitting). We had wanted the lively experience of the holidays at Apero, and told her this. I said our reservation is for downstairs, we booked Apero, and it's the holidays. (The gentleman with whom I spoke upon arrival was polite, when he finally came to greet other patrons that is, and offered me the bar until the table was ready at least), but this woman told me I HAD to go upstairs and that the other hostess didn't know what he was talking for about because SHE was in charge. We were sitting in the upstairs of La Boheme alone. I said kindly - my fiend is 9 mos pregnant, we have a 7pm reservation, and it's already 7:30. The rude employee/ hostess/ waitress whoever she was told me if we wanted to eat downstairs, it would be 35 mins at least more! She didn't even apologize and was aggressive, pushy, and just flat out abrasive and rude. It was then that I learned from my friend that she hadn't given this place another chance from when she tried to came the last time and they were beyond rude to her. We decided we'd rather go downstairs because upstairs was depressing, poorly decorated, terrible ambiance, AND we were alone with this AWFUL and PUSHY woman who was going to completely wreck our experience (even more than it already was). We went downstairs and had to sit at the bar for another 20+ minutes and then after 1 full hour were finally sat. My friend is so unbelievably pregnant - literally at her due date - they again sat us at a high top. (Moved us from the bar to the same situation - a high top - it felt like they were almost spiting us for not staying upstairs in their what they call "tasting room" ... alone). The waiter was fine at first. However, after he took my friend's entree order, and she said the chicken, he came back 20 mins later and said, did you decide the chicken or the steak are you ready to order?. My appetizer was good - I do enjoy the mushroom straws they have - but it was soggy. However the duck confit was awful - dry, totally overcooked. Even the potatoes were rubbery overcooked. It was like the plate had been microwaved or under a heat lamp for their bad servers to pick it up. Of course 20% gratituity + 2% health and wellness charge was automatically included. $260 later and nearly 3 hours, plus a poorly prepared entree, feeling so taken advantage of when I left, and not just bad, but mean, judgy, pushy service, I can see why my friend never wanted to go back to this place after her last time. This will be my LAST. I get why people say this place is "wanna be cool". My friend's company is in Gtown, and I own a home in Gtown, and other places have better food, service, and just don't make you feel so crummy. read more

My wife and I recently had dinner with friends and for COVID reasons, chose to sit on the rear outdoor patio. Upon inquiry, we were told there were mosquitos and were given a natural, non-DEET bug spray. It was completely worthless as my wife got eaten alive and was miserable throughout our dinner. She was bitten many times by mosquitos and by oak leaf itch mites. The next day she emailed the restaurant to relay her unpleasant experience. The response that came from the sommelier included an apology and stated that they spray the patio, that their employees also have to work outside, and that they "feel (her) pain." The food quality was good enough, over priced, modest in serving size, and nothing special. They also snuck in a COVID cleaning fee in the bill, a first for us. read more
