Wow! How do you get a customer to change their 5 star rating to 3 stars? Truth is... it's no fault to their own. Ox & Olive was the new kid on the block until their competitor opened a few weeks ago and boom, comparison kills! I've come to Ox & Olive a hand full of times, soft opening, bar seating and main dining. I've literally done the full tour. Each time was service was warm, ambiance was cute, and the experience felt like the "It" spot DC loves to hype. The problem is Ox is great but there is nothing on the menu that says, I need this again. Each time was great but the food is just okay compared to the new kid on the block. Definitely recommend this place for date night! Come see it! Come indulge but unless they do something with the menu I'm not sure this place will last with such a strong competition down the street.

Exceptional and memorable!!!!! From the moment we entered, until we walked out with our belly's full the service was above and beyond. In an ambiance that makes those intimate moments better. Our server/nutritionist coordinator/food specialist (DJ), and yes all those titles because that's how he made the experience feel. He was exceptional with recommendations and experience on what we should taste. First, Margaritas and mocktails were savory and delicious. The mixologist did his thang on the drinks. We then continue to the starter Mini hotdogs, broiled oysters, and wedged salad), all nothing but exceptional start of explosions of flavor and delight taste. Follow straight to the head liner, a tender and delicious decadent steak that melts in your mouth paired with creamy mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Lastly ended the night with a savory, salty and sweet treat of banana, caramel ice cream. This was a time I could definitely experience again!!!

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! Was so hyped to try this place after seeing it all over social media--reservations are hard to get so my friend and I picked Monday night and opted for bar seating. The restaurant is small, inside felt crammed, but I guess the ambiance gives off an intimate upscale vibe. However, the music is TOO LOUD, we had trouble hearing each other and I couldn't hear the bartender half the time--this was frustrating. For a high end steakhouse, I would have expected more from the management staff--they all seemed unfriendly and never came around to follow up with guests on their dining experience (at least not us!). But the food runners were friendly and cheerful. Food menu is not that extensive. Their pride and joy is the high quality "Beef with Tail to Tell" steaks so we got the Kuroge (Montana) 1.5lb for $148.50. It was huge, definitely shareable for two--meat was tender but the steak LACKED FLAVOR, very bland, and we requested for the steak to be cooked medium but it came out medium RARE. I had to ask for salt to add to the steak. The Whipped Potatoes texture was comparable to a toothpaste sticky texture, not soft and was way too overloaded with cheese. The Maitake Mushroom was good, I liked the peppercorn madeira sauce. The Carrot Cake ($29) was a MAJOR LETDOWN--says it serves 2 but the portion is small!!! The carrot cake presentation itself is cute, designed in a shape of a carrot, but the cake inside is thin, layered outside with sugar coating (or candy melt) which throws off the taste, and there were dark brown sections that were so bitter it was not enjoyable whatsoever. This dessert was a bait! Cocktails were decent. Dirty Martini is good if you like strong drinks, French Martini if you like a more sweet or juice taste, and Pornstar Martini if you like champagne. The martinis ranges from $18-24 a drink. Bartender Jeff was super busy making drinks all night, seemed like he was the only one. Note: the final bill adds an automatic 20% Service Fee, which we were not informed ahead when making reservations, when ordering or written on the menu. Overall, overpriced and underwhelming dining experience. Tip: There's no valet here so recommend parking in the Georgetown Park Parking which is a block away. For roughly 3 hours, parking was $26.

Service was the highlight of our visit to Ox & Olive. Unfortunately the rest fell really flat. To start, they sat us outside. I went back and checked our reservations and there wasn't any note or indication that we were booking it to sit outside - it's 96 degrees. None the less, we still were so excited and tried to be optimistic about it! Their outside patio was blocked in and didn't have any air flow or fans which made the heat almost unbearable - both of us were dripping in sweat throughout a very expensive meal. My recommendation is either fix the patio to have stronger air flow or don't let people reserve the patio unless the season/weather makes sense. Our server was incredible - he was so kind and really welcoming throughout the whole meal. He was the highlight. In terms of the food, everything felt really gimmicky which would have been ok if the food was A+. We got the mini hotdogs, beef tartare eclair, wedge salad, a specialty steak - Hereford (from their daily selection tray), and their onion rings. I'll do a breakdown of my thoughts below: - hot dogs: these needed some serious acid. Overall they lacked flavor and had a poor ratio of bread to meat. - beef tartare: this was one of our favorite dishes of the night. Well balanced with the fat and acid. - steak: unfortunately it was overcooked to medium when we ordered it medium rare which was a massive bummer for it being a steakhouse. It also lacked salt which feels like a basic necessity when it comes to cooking beef. - wedge: an overall good wedge. I really liked the green goddess dressing and little bits of bacon and herbs throughout - onion rings: well done, loved the sauce with it! Overall, for almost $400 I expected so much more. I really hope they take the feedback and negative reviews and improve over the next few months. Had high hopes based on these folks other restaurants so wishing them the best as they work the kinks out.

It's hard to believe this is the same space that once housed Reverie. Ox & Olive has completely reinvented it, creating a moody, elegant dining room that feels both inviting and sophisticated. The dark, dramatic design gives the restaurant a distinct personality without feeling overdone. The kitchen is firing on all cylinders. Given Ryan Ratino's track record, expectations were high, but the meal still managed to exceed them. The standout for me was the ribeye--beautifully cooked and packed with flavor. It's also worth noting that Ox & Olive is currently the only spot in the area serving Bear Creek Farms beef from Tennessee, and the quality absolutely shows. Excellent cocktails, attentive service, and a stylish atmosphere tied everything together. Ox & Olive feels destined to be a destination restaurant.

Not a wedge salad as advertised. Supposed to have bacon per the menu....

Should have read the other reviews before going here. Steak was ok, but the pricing is deceptively kept from you until the bill arrives. The Japanese Waygu is the only steak that is priced and known ahead of time. (Priced by the ounce and clearly labeled so on the menu) All other steaks have a price displayed on the menu. They bring a large tray with the cuts of the steak directly to the table. They explain the origin, aging, and cut. I was comparing each one the waiter explained to the listing on the menu to check the price listed for the steak. The problem: As stated above the Japanese Waygu was listed by ounce. All other steaks had a set price listed. They list those as "$125/#". Not per ounce or at 16oz or 28oz. I kept asking, "so that steak is this one on the menu for $115?" Answer, "Yes". Bill arrives and the steak was $230. Not what I expected. Turns out the "$115/#" means per pound. I asked why they don't explain that when they brought the tray of steaks. No good answer other than, "...we've been struggling with that." OKAY, not my fault.... WTF, why not just print "$115/lb"??????? Problem solved. Wow, that was really hard wasn't it. Fix your problems. It's that simple. I started with a mock "wedge salad". A steakhouse wedge it was NOT. Not even close. As stated by others here, the whipped potatoes were set up like Elmer's paste. Not good. They also serve a tallow butter with the bread. I didn't care for it at all. Just give me a French cream butter, salted. I question their judgement and ability to be a going concern long term.

How do I love Ox & Olive, let me count the ways..LOL! First, let me thank my very good foodie friend who discovered this new steakhouse and booked our date. Gotta love a gal that has initiative! :) Ox & Olive is a true "steak lovers/enthusiasts" dream. The cuts shown are for the serious meat eaters. On a Monday, I was surprised to see the amount of meat that was being thrown around...LOL. The thickest cuts I've ever seen in one place. We ate more like steak novice :). For appetizers, we had the yellowtail tartare, charbroiled oysters and the beef brisket mini hotdogs. I absolutely loved all three however, she thought the oysters were a tad salty.. not me, give me the salt..lol! I had the 12oz striploin sliced and she had the Black Bass for entrees. Without being a prisoner of the moment, the flavor coming off of that steak had me giddy from the first bite to the last. Perfectly charred on the outside, and buttery soft on the inside....Just amazing! Her Black Bass was delicious and I know a good piece of fish and this was it! Ox & Olive is a quaint restaurant with a trendy design. The furry throws on the backs of the chairs were definitely picture worthy but how do you clean them?? hmmm.. When I say quaint, I mean small. You absolutley have to make reservations or you'll be wasting your time. I'd say, Ox & Olive can hold 50 patrons and another 8 at the bar. They do have patio seating as well that may hold an additional 20. Service was exceptional. We were greeted with complimentary infused lemon drop martinis that were so good, she ordered one for her cocktail of the evening. I did take issue with the included 20% tip and eventhough I was treated this particular dinner, I believe high-end steakhouses in Georgetown should trust their patrons to do the right thing. I'm jus saying!!!

First, you will probably go on a mini field trip trying to find this place. I think I spun the block about five times looking for it! Ox & Olive is hidden on a side street, although there are markings with their name. With a 5:30p reservation, we were promptly seated. Inside is a bit cozy. There's an outdoor patio as well. Loved the open-kitchen concept. As I was taking pictures, the sous chefs were smiling for the pics! One even gave me a thumbs up :-) On to the food - we tried a few things: Mini Brisket Hot Dogs, Yellowtail Tartare, Broiled Oysters, Black Bass, Sirloin Steak & Onion Rings. So, don't shoot me, but my favorite dish was the hot dogs! They were so cute being mini-sized, and it was packed with flavor -- the pickled onions, mustard and relish -- chef's kiss. The bread was buttery and soft. Loved it. The Yellowtail Tartare was good. Nothing to write home about, but good nonetheless. The Broiled Oysters were a bit too salty for me, so I told him he could eat the rest after I tried one. The Black Bass was tasty. I mentioned that the jus reminded me of a lobster bisque, and that's when he reminded me that the sauce was just that --a "lobster emulsion." He liked it so much so that he kept dipping his sirloin in it. Take note, Chefs! My only gripe about the food selection is the minimal side dish options - vegetables, specifically. Yes, one can choose from mushrooms or "creamed" greens, but it would be nice to simply have a green veggie without the "cream." Think asparagus, broccoli, etc. Overall, it was a great experience. Richard, our waiter, was kind and hospitable. The complimentary lemon drop was amazing...so much so, I ordered another. Lastly, be aware that 20% gratuity is automatically added. Big sigh for Georgetown. Anyway, try for yourself. Cheers!

The service was spectacular. Our water never dipped below halfway and the staff was so nice across the board. The welcome cocktail was so good that my friend and I decided to order it. We never felt rushed. We had our choice of indoor and patio seating. We chose outdoor. At 84 degrees, the pergola blocked the breeze so I would choose indoor next time. The steak tartare appetizer was solid. A unique presentation with what I believe was a pumpernickel crust. We decided to order the wagyu flank steak that was cooked perfectly to medium. The standout was the loaded whipped potatoes with foam cheese. Delicious! Definitely will be back with my husband.

    Hot dog

This restaurant is trying far too hard to punch above its weight. From the cheap table settings and uninspired menu design to the unpolished service and thoroughly mediocre food, it fell short on every front. If you're going to bill yourself as a steakhouse, the very least you can do is serve a decent mashed potato. Instead, it arrived with the consistency of soup. Most astonishingly, the hot dog starter proved to be the finest thing we ate all evening. That's not a compliment to the hot dog so much as an indictment of everything that followed. That a ribeye could be eclipsed by a frankfurter takes a remarkable lack of ambition.

Ryan Ratino's newest Georgetown hotspot looks the part, tucked down an alleyway with all the makings of an exclusive, buzzy steakhouse destination. Unfortunately, the experience never quite lives up to the hype, or the $$$$ price tag. To be fair, the steak itself was very good. But beyond that, almost every dish felt surprisingly average for a restaurant aiming this high. The scallop landed with little excitement, the wedge salad was forgettable, and while the carrot cake is undeniably photogenic, it tasted more Instagram-ready than memorable. The beef tartare was one of the stronger dishes of the night, but not enough to elevate the overall meal. And perhaps most puzzling of all, a steakhouse without a ribeye on the menu feels borderline sacrilegious since that is what most steak lovers gravitate to. The unique touches are being able to select your sirloin from one of a few farms on a demo tray, and getting to choose your weapon (steak knife). Service did not feel refined. My waiter might as well been working at Cheesecake Factory. Pet peeve questions like "are you still working" need to be removed from staff vocab at high end restaurants. Auctioning off plates "who had the short rib" is weird. In a city filled with strong steakhouse competition, this one just doesn't make me want to run back. 4 stars if value wasn't a factor. 3 stars when factoring in that you are going to spend $250 pp

Let me start by saying we originally had reservations at another restaurant, but after standing at the host stand for way longer than we should have without anyone acknowledging us, we decided to leave and give Ox & Olive a try. Best decision we could have made! From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, the customer service was exceptional. The host and hostess greeted us immediately, were welcoming, and communicated everything so well. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful. It has such an intimate atmosphere, and I honestly wanted to see the rest of the restaurant because it looked so nice! Now let me talk about DJ, our waiter. He had another gentleman helping him, but I didn't catch his name. DJ truly made my birthday special. From his recommendations to his personality, he was amazing. He was friendly, funny, attentive, and made the whole experience feel relaxed and enjoyable. And the food... wow. Every single thing we ordered was delicious from start to finish. One of the best steaks I have ever had! Even the presentation, the knives, and the overall experience of the meal made it feel special. Now let's talk about those little square treats we got at the end. I cannot remember what they were called, but you all need to start selling those by the bag because they were THAT good! I seriously wanted to ask for another one. Overall, this was a 10/10 experience. Amazing food, outstanding service, and the perfect place to celebrate my birthday. We'll definitely be back!

I was genuinely torn between giving this restaurant 3 or 4 stars. The service is exceptional, and the staff clearly work hard to create a welcoming experience. The dessert course was also outstanding. Unfortunately, for a restaurant at this price point, almost everything else fell well short of expectations. We waited a month for a Chef's Table reservation, so our expectations were understandably high. The experience is advertised at $95 per person, which includes the Small & Tasty selections, dessert, and your choice of steak at an additional cost. Upon being seated, we were welcomed with a delicious martini. However, before we had much opportunity to review the menu, we were immediately asked to select our steak. We chose the Australian Kuroge Black, which was approximately 1.7 pounds to share between two people. One of the biggest surprises was the pacing of the experience. Rather than being guided through a progression of dishes, nearly all of the Small & Tasty items arrived at once. We received the brioche pull-apart, mini brisket hot dogs, steak tartare éclair, marinated olives, and beef & cheddar salami almost immediately. While the staff provided some information about each dish, the overall experience felt rushed rather than curated. We had barely ordered cocktails before most of the food was already on the table. The food itself was fine, but very little stood out. None of the dishes were particularly memorable, and many felt under-seasoned or lacking the depth of flavor you would expect from a premium steakhouse. Nothing was bad, but very little was remarkable. The bone broth was one of the better items. We were repeatedly warned that it would stay extremely hot, but it cooled surprisingly quickly despite us drinking it right away. The overall flow of service also felt a bit awkward, with courses appearing and table settings being rearranged somewhat abruptly and without much explanation. My husband enjoyed the prawns and felt they were cooked very well. Since I do not eat prawns, he ended up having both servings. Another small detail that felt confusing was the hot towel service. Towels were delivered early in the meal and expanded when hot water was poured over them, but because they arrived while we were actively eating, we didn't use them until much later when they were cold. It wasn't clear whether they were intended as a mid-meal refresh or simply provided as a courtesy. The cocktails were well-made, but service from the bar was noticeably slow. With only one bartender handling the room, there were significant waits between drinks. My recommendation would be to order your next cocktail before finishing your current one. While the drinks were enjoyable, I personally did not find them worth the premium pricing. As for the steak, it was simply okay. I was especially excited because I typically love Australian beef, but the crust was so heavily salted that I found myself constantly reaching for water. My husband thought it was cooked properly and enjoyed it more than I did, so opinions may vary. The accompanying sides also disappointed. The whipped potatoes had a pleasant texture but were served lukewarm at best. The creamed farm greens lacked seasoning and tasted as though they had been prepared in bulk well before service. The onion rings felt out of place and were so heavily salted that neither of us wanted more than one. The undeniable highlight of the evening was dessert. We ordered the carrot cake and the chocolate mille-feuille, and both were exceptional. Every component was beautifully executed, balanced, and memorable. In all honesty, the pastry team was responsible for the best part of the entire experience. I would happily return just for dessert. For drinks, we tried the French Martini, Pornstar Martini, Dirty Martini, and Ox & Olive Martini. After two cocktails each, dinner for two, and the automatic 20% service charge, our bill came to nearly $750. At that price point, I expected a truly memorable dining experience. Instead, I left feeling that the food did not justify the cost. The staff deserve praise for their professionalism and hospitality, and the pastry program is genuinely excellent. However, for me, the Chef's Table experience did not deliver the level of creativity, execution, or value that the price suggests. Unless significant changes are made, I would not return for the full dining experience. If I came back at all, it would be for dessert alone.

Tucked into the heart of Dupont Circle with its unmistakable bright blue awning, the restaurant is intimate, moody, and always buzzing. It's not a huge space, which only adds to its charm and makes every reservation feel like a win. The atmosphere is perfect for sharing dishes and lingering over dinner with friends. The food was incredible...I genuinely loved every single bite. Just be prepared: the Sichuan spice is no joke! If you aren't expecting it, it'll definitely sneak up on you (in the best way). The sauce has a slight kick and is very savory. The beef is soft and also flavorful! I feel the price for the portion is kinda expensive though 8/10 Chili wontons - skin is silky and soft, sauce is savory with a small kick as well! Even though the sauces look similar to beef noodle they taste very different. The fillings had good flavor and overall were good but were a bit tougher and dryer than I would prefer. 6/10 Crab fried rice - crab is slightly overcooked but naturally sweet. It has a light curry taste throughout and was pretty good but didn't really stand out 5.5/10 Mapo tofu - slight kick and nice savory taste in the sauce! However I think they cut the tofu pieces way too large or the tofu they chose had way too much tofu flavor that overpowers the sauce. I'd prefer a very light silky tofu but this was a soft tofu. 6/10 Vpod - at first it just tasted like orange juice but then the other flavors peek through on the after taste and when I mixed it more. Even though it was good, it still felt very basic 5/10 Philadelphia Scotsman - it's pretty ginger forward. Technically the level of ginger spice is fine but strong but then the rest of the drink got completely overpowered and so this just wasn't that great 2.5/10

I know reservations are probably highly recommended, but we were fortunate to walk in at just the right moment and snag a seat. The seating is cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed evening. The atmosphere is just my style, an elegant, dark, grown and sexy vibe that really sets the mood. The decor is striking, with thoughtful touches that create an inviting space to unwind. While it leans a bit on the pricier side, the exceptional service more than justifies the cost. Jordan and the team were incredibly knowledgeable about both the drinks and food menu, offering suggestions that perfectly matched our tastes. We tried two standout drinks that I can't recommend enough: the Attractive Nuisance and El Tiburon, (which is an Old Fashioned made with gin). The bartenders here clearly know what they're doing, each drink was crafted with care and precision. The good music in the background added to the overall ambiance, making it a delightful spot to spend an evening.

Because the last time we were here, we could find a seat easily. So never thought about making a reservation. As we walked in, the place was packed. Lucky we got a table in the corner for an hour. One of us had to stand unfortunately. Drinks were great but felt overpriced. Food was delicious too. Fried potatoes and tartar is a must have. The service was great. Ambiance is amazing as well. Slightly on the darker side in the inside. They also have outdoor seating.

For context, my last visit to DC in my teens, I was looking to view DC, in a new light, as an adult. Entering Jane Jane somehow felt like home. The intimate, inclusive, dimly lit bar, decorated to feel both modern and vintage reminded me of my favorite spot in Houston, Nobies. While Nobies offers great food, Jane Jane kills it with their cocktails...and the complimentary bowl of cheese its...perfect bar food I guess? Their legend's menu is just that. Although I came in anticipating ordering one drink, that one turned into two after trying the "A La Playa". I'm not sure I'd sip it on the beach, but the sweet, slightly Smokey, fruity concoctions now lives on my list of favorites drinks. It has the perfect balance of flavors. While a $17 cocktail is not an everyday outing (for me atleast), their drinks are strong, and legends worth trying. The shenanigans on 14th are just a welcome bonus.

Five stars for the host and the bartender. Two stars for the server…read more It's really eclectic place with limited seats. The decor is fun and bright. If there's nowhere to sit, there's standing room where you can order from the bar and wait. Perhaps it's my fault for having too high of hopes but I left feeling underwhelmed by the drink selection. We ordered two crop tops - it's a gin drink with a dash of red wine. We ordered while we were waiting in the standing room...and then we were seated...and we were still waiting...so it took a long while. With tip we paid $44 for two drinks. If there's a happy hour, perhaps that's the better play but I won't be returning.
