One failed without notice with years of photos and the other, a Time Machine backup for my Mac was clicking, with delayed mounting. It wasn't dead yet but I'd not touched it since I unplugged it over a year ago, didn't know the current status, and was afraid to boot it up in case it loaded but might be its last time. The sudden death one was critical, the other not so much (unless I had backed up the other drive during the daily backup)! I dropped them off to Kurt with 2 new drives for transfer and instructions to ignore the one unless the critical one was useless and left town for a week. I returned with hope, concerned but not stressing bc I try not to stress until I know it's bad. But let me tell you, losing 25 years of photos to a scrapbooker is unfathomable. The photo drive was 100% toast unless I send it off ($3k-$10k?). The HD DID have the photo-video drive backed up. (Whew)! To recap: Kurt understood my issues and what to focus on. He gave me an idea of cost/time. He was successful in recovering my data and saving it to my new supplied drives. The bill was very reasonable. Plus, he's a nice guy to work with! Not only did they never get to the action items for which I called, these guys sent a tech who totally wrecked havoc on my machines which were previously rock solid and stable. They ran a software that 'broke' the connections between files and software (e.g. so Adobe didn't recognize PDF files for example, outlook didn't recognize vcards, etc). They added software that slowed down my operations, and caused all sorts of problems I didn't have before they started. At one point I found the tech actually googling how to perform a basic function (seriously? I can do that!?!?) I've spent weeks trying to unravel their 'work'. I heard they did a good job (which is why I called), so maybe it was who they sent...but I strongly suggest you do your homework, ask for the qualifications of the tech they send, and watch them as they perform the work to understand what they are doing so you can either approve it or undo it later.

I dropped my cell phone on my new ThinkPad laptop screen and did what I thought was basically impossible-- destroyed the screen. Took it to Kevin, who I had ordered parts from before. He knew what to do, ordered the parts and you cannot even tell anything was repaired at all. Not a scratch or pry mark or anything. When I picked up my ThinkPad, I brought him my gore of another laptop (an rare type of the HP Envy 360) that had some major screen issues (dropped, half-repaired, manufacturing flaw, screen disconnecting, bent hinges). A little bit more of a challenge, but the guys there did not bat an eye. Got my little HP back in a week in a half, and it looked again, brand new-- could not even tell that they had basically replaced the entire half of my screen. Repair costs were all 100 percent reasonable, and Kevin is super up-front about costs and pricing. If something costs more than expected or they run into an unexpected issue, they will let you know asap. Outside of repairs, they also sell new and previously-owned retail, and all types of accessories, so if you are looking for a great local small business to support, this is the one. The new screen has been fantastic and he even hooked me up with a screen protector I assume for a presumed inconvenience. It wasn't difficult to find however, because there was a sign in front for CareTech and the building itself had signs with all the store names as well. I went around 5:00pm on Saturday and it was easy to find street parking although I'm not quite sure about the other days. It looks like they may have a back parking area as well. I messaged CareTech beforehand, asking if they can fix my broken laptop and they were really quick to respond! I accidentally spilled water over it back in August and fried my MacBook Pro. It seems my Logic Board is damaged and most likely my keyboard too (it's difficult to tell if the keyboard is damaged or not unless it's turned on but that's where I spilled water so... it's most likely done for). It seems like it really depends on the model to accurately quote replacement parts and sadly, Apple parts are crazy expensive. I got price quotes from several different places so I'm certain they're not overpricing me. Also, after talking to them, I don't think they're the types of people that would! For my case, data retrieval would have been $70/hour which is cheaper than most places I inquired! It seems it really depends on if/how much the hard drive was damaged and how hard it is to retrieve the data (internally). When I walked in, Charlie greeted me very warmly and he even remembered my name and situation from messaging me! There was one other person there at the time and they were both really friendly and helped me open up the laptop and take out my SSD. They talked me through different options and it seemed like they were genuinely interested in helping me diagnose the problem more than just making quick cash. Overall, from what I found, this place had really great pricing and awesome service. :)
