I don't know why Steve and I haven't been to Annapurna Cafe until recently. We have walked by the restaurant plenty of times when out and about in Capitol Hill and it always smelled great when we strolled by. Well better late than never I guess as we finally made it here and simply loved the food! I got my favorite when it comes to Indian cuisine which was the Chicken Vindaloo. It was wonderful! Steve liked his dish as well (though I can't quite remember what it is)! We got some Garlic Naan to go along with our meal. It was huge! But we chowed it down and loved every moment of it! From the bar which I think is called the Yeti Bar we got some Saffron infused cocktails. The one I picked was the Madras. It wad very good and this type of vodka added a great, unique dimension to the cocktail. We loved it! We to finish off this great meal we got some dessert with some deep fried goodness along with some cream. Yes, we had a fantastic meal here and really went all out by trying everything. This was a DoorDash order, but wow I've never had Indian food from a restaurant taste so off. Chicken tikka masala, no tikka masala flavor and asked for 2* spice out of 3* and it was bland. Saag paneer, terrible with no flavor or spice Chana masala was just weird with no spice Garlic naan was good Idli sambhar was dry and sour. We had been meaning to try Annapurna for ages. The incredible spice aroma bombarding us each time we take the broadway/denny exit out of the station, we knew we needed to finally try out this capitol hill staple. I'm glad to say it did not disappoint in the slightest. We were seated quickly. The ambience in the basement seating area is super cool. The Himalayan/Nepalese decorating is distinct and enjoyable. The service throughout dinner was very fast and attentive. All of the food was unique and delicious. I couldn't help but take a picture of the humorous sign in the bathroom - FYI, they sell their copperware. One thing to note: they add a 15% service charge to the bill and do not expect additional tipping. I get that this sort of practice is controversial. I agree with the idea that businesses should be up front with pricing and adjust menu prices instead of adding charges at the end. I think it helps that I was aware of this charge going into the meal. I'm not a big fan of this practice overall, but I can't let it stop me from eating at otherwise great establishments like Annapurna. Looking forward to adding Annapurna to our regulars. read more

I went here around 7:30pm on a Sunday and it was still pretty busy, but we got seated within 5 min. This place has nice, eclectic ambience with Nepali/Tibetan vibes as there is a lot of items and paintings laying around the restaurant walls and furniture. It is a smooth transition from the bustling Capitol Hill, although it is closer to the light rail station which is convenient for commuting but also not located in the busy Pike/Pine area of Capitol Hill. We tried 2 different momos (fried momo with lamb, chicken tikka masala) and Annapurna curry with chicken. The fried momo came with 3 different dipping sauces that supplement very well, and I liked the spicy one and the peanut one the most. The chicken tikka masala momos were interesting as they were on a small skillet with green peppers and onions. The Annapurna curry was well spiced but a bit watery, but there is a good amount of chicken. All 3 dishes were more than enough for 2 people to share. Service is good as water refills were present and they deliver the food promptly. Service charge 15% is included, which is pretty good as most other places force 18-25% service charge which can be way too much if they do not adequately deliver on service. read more

Annapurna was incredible! The food was delicious, the ambience was just right for our small get together, and we had a lovely time. One brief caveat before I rave about the food--the intake process is highly unorganized. I asked the first individual I saw about our reservation and he just told us it's "on the other side". Okay, where? We go across the hall and down and someone greets us, then asks if we want a table. I remind them about our reservation and they are unsure if they can seat us. Then as the woman who is helping us is grabbing menus, another man comes and asks us if we want a table... they are just not coordinated. They ended up seating us at a far away corner of the restaurant and at some point the man came to us and said "look you're over here away from everyone! Don't you love it??" Weird. Okay but onto the food. The momos (we got 3-4 different kinds) were all absolutely fantastic. we also ordered a few curries and went with the medium spice level which I think was right for a table that claimed to be able to handle a bit of spice but in reality can't handle too much. Personally I would have gone spicier. I ordered a chai and it was heavenly! So flavorful but it didn't end up conflicting with my sleep so that was great. The recommendations from the server were all excellent and every dish was loved by the table which leads me to believe it's hard to go wrong here. Ultimately after we were seated everything was conducive to an enjoyable time--great company, great food, and nice ambience that struck the balance between bringing the food at a reasonable pace but also giving us space to enjoy ourselves. read more

We weren't sure where we were going on Broadway and decided to pop into Annapurna. I've walked by it forever (in relative terms - it's older than my daughter who I brought with me). We were seated immediately in the Yeti Bar (it was only 4:45) and supplied with excellent pappadum. We ordered the lamb kothay momo to start with. We followed that with sekuwa, garlic naan, and one of the classic combos (I missed the name but it has a chicken curry). The momo came out very quickly and were fantastic. We loved them plain and with the various sauces. The lamb was so tender and flavorful. The chicken curry was fantastic (we ordered 2/3 spicy stars). We loved all of the sides. The delicious smell from the street should lead you in. I got their Spicy chicken vindaloo. Garlic naan GOOD FOOD! NOT A FAN of the SHADY AF note added with bill saying a 15% "service charge" is automatically added (not informed until AFTER you order & eat). Saying it's because they're "eliminating tipping". Annapurna Cafe is a cap hill institution at this point, and is still a really solid choice when you're pondering where to grab dinner on the hill. The space still has the same coziness as always, which comes by virtue of being underground. That plus the dim lighting makes it a pretty good choice for a date. The menu hasn't changed too much in the intervening years since my last visit, and still contains all the Nepalese staples with some Indian dishes interspersed. I'd recommend going with the Nepalese dishes because that's their specialty. Definitely get momos to start -- and they have several kinds, including a delicious vegetarian version, which come with a few different dipping sauces. Their various lentil dishes are a good choice for the vegetarians, and I went for the Annapurna curry with fish. Their curries are not that spicy, but very savory, and the fish was cooked to flaky and tender. Portions are not huge, but are definitely satisfying, especially if paired with some naan or roti. Service is fast and attentive. One thing I will say is that your hair and clothes will likely smell pretty fragrant after eating here -- since the restaurant is in the basement, the ventilation is not the best, and the aromas do stick to you. read more

A complicated and unusual review. First so people will see it: they apply a 14.4% "Service Charge". I only knew this after seeing someone else's review here on Yelp after I got on Yelp to leave a review and checked my receipt. Where I sat was so dark I did not see it on the bill and gave a tip on top of the service charge. Certainly the waiter did no say anything about a service charge. I would take two stars off except that since I am in favor of eliminating tipping, I want to support places that essentially seem to be substituting a service charge or just more honestly rolling tips into the price, so I will just take one star off. Otherwise, for the food, it is 5 stars. Have only had the Nepali items on the menu. Portions are not large but food is filling and the price is proportional to the portion size, exempting the service charge. Service was polite and efficient, though again, no mention of the included service fee. Very pleasant and colorful ambiance. read more

Wow, what an incredible meal! We were overdue for a date night, and decided to hit a bar before Annapurna. Walking into the hallway decorated with lanterns and twinkling lights helped you immerse into the transformative dining experience. We got a table during a busy Saturday night. We lucked out on a 4top for 2ppl! We needed space for dishes. We went a little overboard on apps. If we should have passed on anything, it would have been the calamari. We love chickpeas, but the breading wasn't doing it for us. The tensing momo was above and beyond!! I also adored the crispy rolls. We decided on chicken tikka masala and annapurna curry with lamb. AMAZING! Combine them both if you're daring. It's hard not to keep dipping, and the naan was soft on inside and crispy on outside. Service was quick! Our copper glasses stayed full. This was my first visit to this restaurant. We ordered jaljeera, spinach momos, paneer chili momos, pani puri, malai kofta, and naan. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable. My favorites were the pani puri and momos, which were amazing. However, the jaljeera lacked the authentic flavor and was too mild. The malai kofta was too sweet, had insufficient gravy, and the kofta were a bit hard. The naan was just okay--slightly cold and a bit stiff. I wanted to love Annapurna Cafe after a mishap nearby with a restaurant not being open, but sadly it was just an okay experience food-wise. The restaurant specializes in Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan cuisine from the mountainous regions. While I usually go some apps and a curry, the selection of Tibetan dishes definitely intrigued me so I differed from my usual orders... and that was probably a slight mistake on my end. We tried their Annapurna Curry with Tofu, the Tibetan Vegetable Thukpa soup, and a Stuffed Paratha. The curry felt very watery and unflavored to the point of it being almost too bland. Paratha was flaky but also bland to us. The thukpa was probably the biggest disappointment. It tasted like a bland vegetable soup that you could throw together at home so I regretted not going for another type of daal or curry. I also noticed their menu was confusing when it came to labeling what was vegetarian or vegan. They'd go back and forth either listing an item as 'vegan' or using a symbol, or not at all on items I was confident would be vegan friendly. While the food was bland, I did find the ambiance quite nice with the restaurant being on a lower level and the staff creating quite the mood lighting for us. Perhaps these dishes were just misses on our end and they have other great items to try. Hopefully if you come, you'll have a better food experience than we did. read more

We got the chicken saag, lamb kofta, samosas, garlic naan, paneer naan, and a dish I can't remember the name of but it had like 10 different little things on it like beans, nuts, chicken, etc. The standout was the sauce in the lamb kofta! I don't eat lamb so I didn't have the meatballs (but heard good things from everyone else), but the sauce was so good. A touch sweet, so if that's not your thing I wouldn't recommend but I loved it. The chicken in the chicken saag was also not dry at all and tasted great. The naans were good but I thought the garlic one didn't have enough garlic, and the paneer one was good too but it was a lot! This was my first time trying Nepalese cuisine and it was pretty good. My friend and I ordered the naan, tensing momo, annapurna curry, and lhasa curry. The tensing momo was the best item we tried. The filling in the dumplings had chicken mixed with spices that gave it such a good taste and flavor it was hard to not resist as we were waiting for our other items. The annapurna curry was good. The sauce was tomato-y and mixed with chicken and veggie pieces but the flavor was not as great as the momos. Finally, while naan is always enjoyable, the naan here was a bit underwhelming. Otherwise, the ambience and decor was really nice. Lots of Nepalese and Tibetan decorations and the cups they served water in were pretty neat. Very very delicious Indian food. It has the great classic Chicken Tikka Masala but I feel like it had a bit of extra nutty flavor or something that gave it more umami than you would typically have in a tikka masala. I think since it is combined with other cuisines besides Indian, that added flavor was very rich and unique. The garlic naan bread was very good too. The service was friendly and efficient both times I went in, and helpful with my questions about the menu items. They did not have chicken korma but the man suggested the Chicken Tikka Masala which he said would be similar. The restaurant seems to be located in the basement, it is downstairs and right next door to one of the entrances for the Link station. You can smell the delicious food wafting from the restaurant from the street. As soon as you go down the steps, the atmosphere envelops you with rich dark red wall coverings and reflective tiles. It is an experience walking down into this restaurant! Like stepping foot into a separate timeline. Very good food, I want to go back and get the exact same thing but I'm sure all the other options are just as good. read more

After passing by this place on numerous occasions while in Capitol Hill (and once while they were only doing takeout due to Covid), my friend and I finally gave it a try on a hot and sunny day. I distinctly remember meeting another Yelp Elite at a Yelp event who said this was one of her favorite places to eat in Seattle. My friend and I were seated indoors near the patio. They have no A/C though and so we were sweating throughout our meal. We ordered the Himalayan Lamb curry (savory brown curry with onions, peas, and other vegetables ) and the Annapurna curry with chicken (more of a reddish curry with vegetables). On the menu they sounded alike, but the waiter said they were quite different from each other which I agreed with after tasting both curries. We ordered both as three star spiciness (scale is 1-3), but they honestly tasted more like 2 stars on a 5 star scale menu. Regardless, the curry flavors were definitely there and both were delicious! Our total came out to about $46 including tax and tip (note that a 15% gratuity is already tacked on to all orders), which is somewhat pricey for two dishes but not outrageous. Neither of us left hungry. The atmosphere is okay. Nothing fancy. The only outdoor seating they have are three tables of two and so it's very cramp if you want to sit outdoors. Service was excellent. Our waiter was very friendly and refilled our waters several times. We received our food within 20 minutes of ordering.
