A small, rare find. I visited after turning away from a nearby restaurant with a long wait. Went around the corner and immediately sat down to a wonderful dining experience. The entree was very tasty and the portion was generous. Staff recommended my entrée and I was very happy. I tried a Tibetan dish and found it different than any other type of Asian food. The most amazing experience. Chanced upon it while walking by and it's so beautifully colorful inside. Was a mother daughter run place and had that laid back and relaxing feeling in how they ran it. Service was reasonably prompt, especially considering there was one lady waiting all the tables and running the till, with one other running the kitchen. Every time I've been to Victoria, over the course of over 10 years, I make a point to eat here. A small restaurant with big heart! Staff is always friendly and the food is always something to look forward to, I'm never disappointed. I came with a vegan person this time who found plenty of options. I love the texture of the chickpea-battered onion rings and kale. The delicate and balanced flavor of their cashew curry is delightful and for the first time I had the uniquely light bread with Dahl that is now a favorite. Delicious! I've been dying to eat here for years and finally made it on my most recent trip. Whenever I am in Victoria I enjoy walking around and reading all the menus as there are so many places to eat at. I am always thankful of places that have unique food that is not easily available other places and who post their menus on their windows. I am even more thankful when places make note clearly of their vegan options. I've tried Tibetan food a small amount of times in the past, but really wanted to try this place as they offer vegan Momos. I've been on a dumpling kick lately, and these sounded fantastic. I am happy to report I was able to make it happen, but did walk all the way over to this location once as I did not observe correctly that they were closed on Sundays. Lunch on Monday had a smaller menu, but they were happy to allow me to order the Momos which were not on this menu. I was happy to wait the additional time as I really wanted to try these. The tofu onion mixture was fantastic and I opted to have mine pan fried with the medium sauce. My boyfriend opted for the pork version and enjoyed his equally. I was sad to find that I quickly devoured all of them and did not have any to eat at a later time. There are multiple other items on the menu I would love to try on future visits. I spent multiple hours trying to find a version of a vegan Momo in my home town as I enjoyed these so much. The people at the table over complained about the hot temperature of their soup dish, but this seemed like a good thing to me. Others I observed dining seemed to be similarly happy with their meals, and this place seemed busy for a late lunch in a town with so many options. read more

I was visiting the town and my friend recommend we meet for lunch at this charming hole in a wall restaurant. It is very rustic and authentic. It was my first time trying Tibetan food, I'm always curious about trying new type of food. The service was good, it felt more like we were in a family own restaurant but I don't know if this the case. It has a very relax atmosphere. I really like the location and also all the large window facing the street. We had dim sum and spring rolls and more. This is a good place to dine in, if you want to try healthy, msg free this place is the bomb. Poories is what you need to order for start, match it with any of their curry. I had their Thukpa and its so good and healthy, you can tell that it's cooked with out any extender or unwanted seasoning, they used free range chicken. For dessert we had chocolate blueberry momos, the bomb!!! It's a must so make sure to make some room for dessert. To top it all the owner's daughter is amazing, friendly and very accommodating, excellent customer service. So once we come back to Victoria, BC we will definitely make this as one of our favorite spots. read more

Tasty food and affordable price. We decided to get takeout from here and I'm glad we did. They were able to make our food quickly. We tried the momo (pork), shabakleb, and chicken curry. My favourite was definitely the curry. I was so happy find out it was made with cashews, so it's dairy free. I asked for medium spice and it wasn't very spicy, but had a little heat. But it was delicious. There were plenty of pieces of chicken and the curry was flavourful. It came with an option of white or brown basmati rice and deep fried bread. The shabakleb was tasty too. It's essentially a deep fried pita pocket filled with plenty of ground beef and a spicy sauce. I kind of wish there was something else in the filling other than ground beef, but it was still good. The momos were just ok for me. It might have been better if we had it fresh and I'm the restaurant. But overall, the meal was satisfying and reasonably priced. read more

I'm not exactly sure why or how this place got such high ratings. We walked in and it was a small place, but had a decent amount of seating. Our server wasn't mean, or anything, but she wasn't friendly and wasn't attentive. It felt like it took forever to do anything and receive everything. It took close to 20 minutes just to order, which really should have been our cue to leave. Food took a painfully long time to come out as well and the quality didn't justify the wait. Everything was super oily and some of our items were missing, which I was kinda ok with since what we did get wasn't great. I assumed they'd just take it off the bill, but nope. They finally realized we were missing items and instead of asking if we still wanted them, they brought out our missing items as we were already done with our main entrees. I was super disappointed by the overall experience and wouldn't recommend this place with so many other options within walking distance. read more

Lovely dinner with peaceful ambiance! Never had Tibetan before but w a veg in the group we tried it and loved it. The decor was very peaceful with zen music in the background. Chai tea and mango lassi to start...delicious. We tried the vegan samosa with a dipping sauce redolent of 5 spice and some fried onion rings..very tasty. Pork momos were bodied dumplings with a spicy (but not too much) dipping sauce which was a lot like Mexican salsa. Main courses: vegan and lamb curries were great. Lots of lamb in the curry and the vegan had a nice lentil accompaniment. Both served w rice and poori. Vegetarian and pork shehta were just lovely and very sizable portions. Both were over brown or white rice ...the brown rice looked more like red rice and was very flavorful. It is not nearly as spicy as Thai....the level hot was more like a low-medium but that's ok Too full for dessert. Portion size was generous. Service was friendly and efficient. I wish we had a place like this in SanDiego! Next time in Victoria, we shall return! Loved this place by all four of us. read more

Excellent! Saw on "You Gotta Eat Here" and so we gave it a go as we have never tried Tibetan-Himalayan-Indian cuisine. Pleasantly surprised! Everything made in-house from scratch. We started with momo dumplings which were very good then a shepta stir-fry noodle dish which was balanced and flavourful. The curries are rich and amazing (all dairy and gluten free; be daring and ask for hot and get the spicy pickle!). Lunch specials are a great deal. Dinner service is all about sharing! The chef and owner Pemba also has a little window kiosk in Market Square called Pemba's Kitchen serving up a very limited menu of delicious daily lunch specials like curry bowls with rice and lentils and vegetables. I was afraid to try this as I'm interested in trying new things but it's always a risk. I had the good fortune to be on business and have my lunch expenses reimbursed, so my colleague and I decided to give it a go. Boy, were we in for a great surprise. The atmosphere is lovely, the service is excellent, and the food is amazing! Great portions, great taste. We both ordered the curried chicken lunch special, which comes with locally raised chicken(!) in a curry sauce, rice, a little side of dal, and 2 nice pieces of fried bread. We also ordered the steamed momos because I was curious to try them. They were DELICIOUS! We ordered half beef, half vegetarian. I would love to see them offer a cooking class on one of their closed days to teach people how to make delicious momos. We finished off the meal with some yummy chai teas. The food was decent but unfortunately the service was not good so I did not enjoy the experience. We were not aknowlaged for at least 20 minutes although only 2 other tables there. We did not get our water / tea for at least 40 minutes. The dumpling dish is under entrees on the menu so i did not realize it came with no veggies or sides but she never came to check on us so I couldnt order something extra. In addition, $14 is a lot for 8 dumplings and nothing else. Very dissapointing and I really feel like I missed out. read more

I have not found momo and momo sauce (chutney) better than this (and I've tried in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver & now Victoria). Medium spice for the chutney was perfect. Some of the momos have a slight twist (e.g. vegan) from authentic momos you find in Nepal or Tibet, but they are awesome too! The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable, fantastic service. The curries I've had were a bit on the mild side, considering I ordered medium spice, next time I will order hot and hope for something spicier; they were still flavourful. However, comparing curries from Tibet/Nepal region to India - they are actually milder (in my experience) so I guess this fits. Delicious. Reasonably priced too. read more

We were looking for something a bit different and decided to give them a try. They had good reviews and I've been curious about Tibetan food for a long time. SO glad we tried it! The food is very similar to Indian, but there's also a bit of a Chinese influence. We had the Momo's (dumplings), lamb curry and the shepta. The Momo's are a bit like shu Mei with different seasoning. They come either steamed or fried. We couldn't decide so she offered to do half and half. Really good. The lamb curry was the best I've had. Similar to Indian, but a bit less forward with the spices so you taste the meat a bit more. The shepta was where it crossed over to a bit of a Chinese flavor. Kind of a stir-fry with just a bit of soy sauce. Again, subtly seasoned, but flavorful. read more

Today I took my friend out for a lunch but the restaurant we wanted to go was full-so we started walking and noticed former Konpira location is now a Tibetan restaurant. So we decided to check it out. Lunch menu was simple and around $9-10. I ordered a Butter chicken meal which includes Butter chicken, brown rice, little pickled salad and a lentil soup. It was quite tasty but the butter chicken was not the best I have ever had...I like butter chicken so it still made me happy though. :) I would definitely come back for reasonable Tibetan lunch here for sure. read more

Tibetan Kitchen doesn't mess around with their spices, so if you say "I want this spicy", you'd better mean it. I've been here once for lunch and was here two weeks ago for dinner, and after the last visit, I regret not coming here more often! The restaurant is rather small, but you can usually snag a table without too much of a wait. Service is friendly and efficient. I highly recommend the shrimp curry. I'm still thinking about the curry sauce two weeks later... it's that good! Never say no no to the momos; they're little cloud-like dumplings filled with delicious veggies or meats. When I ordered the vegetarian shepta, I was expecting the dish to taste more like the chinese variety of chow mein and be heavily salted. It actually tastes nothing like typical chow mein and has an unexpected richness and depth of flavour. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the downtown area and enjoy indian or chinese food, but want to try something new. read more

The Tibetan Kitchen Cafe has replaced Konpira! The food is pretty decent ... their lunch specials are a great value at just under $10 for a curry, lentil soup and some fried bread. I would definitely recommend the meatball curry option - the meatballs are made with beef and ginger and taste great. My dining companion got the noodle soup, which was topped with beef and it was pretty good but he had to add hot sauce for more flavour. The interior has been very nicely decorated right down to the fancy bathrooms, the staff was friendly and the food was pretty good. read more

Came here about a month ago. My aunt recommended it as one of her favourite restaurants in Victoria. Given the fact that I adore Asian food and haven't tried much Tibetan, this was a great opportunity. It's quite small and intimate, which seems to be a trademark of good restaurants in Victoria. I'm still unsure as to what 'Tibetan' cuisine really is - the menu seems to consist of Indian and Thai dishes. In the end, we all opted for the shepta- chicken, pork and shrimp. The presentation is beautiful. The dish is served on a bed of brown basmati rice (points for being healthy!) with a generous serving of both vegetables and sauce. I have a habit of always requesting extra hot sauce when I go out to eat... here, I certainly didn't need to. The curry was flavourful enough. There's also a beer and wine menu. I noticed the blueberry mojito on special, and ordered it - it's huge! And hands-down one of the best mojitos I've ever had. If you want a nice dinner out in a quiet space, love spicy food, and love a good drink- 1I'd highly recommend the Tibetan Kitchen. read more

You can taste that the ingredients are fresh and that the cook has put love into her dishes. More of a fusion between Tibetan and Indian food. I had a mild lamb curry with mommas for start and mommas for desert (chocolate mommas). Everything was cooked perfectly and the lamb was as tender as they come. However, the portion was large and filling, good bang for the buck. The superstar of the meal was the lentil soup, and I will keep coming back for this! I went here yesterday with my mother because she was craving momos. I ordered the thukpa, which was fantastic. The chef was very nice and talked to us for quite a while. We had eaten once in a Tibetan restaurant in Portland (OR) and when we saw the name of this restaurant, we decided we needed to try it. The food was quite good (and is a good value...our entrees were about $13 each in July 2012), and the service was prompt and very friendly. The food was well prepared and flavorful. It's hard to put into words, but we all have had eating experiences which we find ourselves thinking "it's hard to imagine the food being any better." We're in Victoria for a few days and drove by on Tuesday. Having had Tibetan/Napali food elsewhere we were interested to give it a try! The reviews here made it a MUST! WOW! What nice, warm & friendly place. After some study we each ordered the Fix Prix dinner. Choice of appetizer, main, glass of wine and desert - we each made a different choice and were able to sample most all of the menu categories. EVERYTHING was excellent. We chose the Pork&Mustard Green Curry and the Shepta with Chicken, and shared it all. The brown (purple) rice is the way to go. This is definitely on our GO-BACK-TO list - may even be a repeat on this trip. read more
