I am very sorry but this place is overrated. It's not a 4.5 star place not by any yardstick. I came here with so much of hope. But if you claim to be a Nepali restaurant how can you make Thupka so wrong. The broth was pretty dead. The momo were also very average. I am sure a restaurant doesn't have a 4.5+ rating by accident so my best guess is that food quality may have declined in recent years. On the contrary the service is really top notch. Well greeted and well care for. The problem is in the kitchen. Please review the cuisine. We ordered the Momo's, Eggplant Curry, and Lamb Curry. The Lamb Curry was the clear winner with deep, rich flavor. The Eggplant Curry was okay but not as strong. For the Momo's, I did not love the fried version and should have gone with steamed instead. The flavors overall felt very authentic and the place still has that mom and pop feel, which is nice. The space is a bit cramped and the chairs are not the most comfortable, so it is better for a casual meal or takeout rather than a long sit down dinner. Prices lean on the higher side, but that makes sense for a spot on Davie. Still worth a visit for the food and the authenticity. read more

If you're not sure what Himalayan food is, just think about Northern India. While there are definitely some Tibetan items on the menu, if you're familiar with Indian restaurants you will feel right at home here, with items like papads, naan bread, and raita. We purposely tried to order items we wouldn't find at most Indian restaurants, and we were very impressed. I had the Nepali Bhojan (Traditional Plate) with chicken at spice level 4 of 6, and it was perfect. The chicken was interestingly spiced and sauced, and the plate came with a delicious potato and spinach dish, rice, soup, raita, yogurt, naan, and papad. The star, though was my companion's Creamy Chicken Curry, a rich, tomato-based generous helping at spice level 3. It came with rice and soup. This will be my go-to next time. The food here is incredibly enjoyable! I have never had some of these options, I found them to be unique, and I greatly enjoyed them! I've never had coconut rice with pieces of shaved coconut in it but it was delicious! I've also never had fries with creamy chicken sauce (buttered chicken sauce) it was amazing and on a cold day-- even better! Definitely stop by and try it out. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the bustling Davie Street in Downtown Vancouver. We saw the happy hour menu advertised at the street level and decided to go upstairs. The interiors are pretty shabby and I was glad we were offered seating outside on the patio. The patio is definitely cute but pretty dark and the table we were seated at was tiny. There was no space for bags, purses etc. or even for all the dishes we ordered. Service was painfully slow - getting our menus and waters itself took so long, then it was 10-15 minutes before someone came to take our order, and finally, the food also took a very long time to come out. While ordering, I was surprised to find out that the happy hour menu advertised at the street level did not match what was mentioned on the menu provided to us. Anyway, we ordered a combination of items from the happy hour menu and the main menu. The food was better than the ambience and service, but nothing really memorable. I was in Vancouver for work and stay in Davie Village which was awesome. What was more awesome was this Himalayan restaurant across the street from my hotel. I walked over there for lunch and had the best butter chicken ever. It was spicy, creamy deliciousness. The naan was so soft and buttery. I also tried mo-mos which are like dumplings. This is my first time visiting this place on a friend's recommendation! I'm glad to now add a new momos spot to my list. The ambiance of the space was very relaxing and homey. It felt like a good familial spot for a group of friends to catch up. (Not pictured) We ordered lamb momos for the table, jhol style (which means in soup). This was beyond delicious! I found the momo filling to be spiced perfectly and the lamb had a lot of flavour. I was basically drinking up the jhol soup as well because it was so good haha. My friend and I split the lamb curry plate, which comes with basmati rice and lentil stew. The lamb curry was rich and deep in flavour. The meat was tender and cooked perfectly. The rice was cooked well, and the lentil stew was a nice touch. The lentil stew wasn't my favourite flavour, but it was growing on me the more I ate it. Honestly the inside is pretty beaten up. The inside basically looks like a living room and dining room. Nice mountain murals on the walls. Staff are friendly. Looks like there was only 1 waitress working. Fortunately the place wasn't too busy. Momo (dumplings) - nice and tasty. 8 bite sized morsels. Comes with 3 sauces (orange, red, green). The spiciness order (mild to spicy) is green, orange, red. Okra - chopped up and served in casserole with curry. Comes with basmati rice and lentil soup. Napali bhojan - traditional platter with several bowls of goodies. I got the goat curry one. Comes with 2 types of flat bread (naan and some deep fried crispy one), and containrs of yogurt, some cream cheese thing with nuts and raisins, spinach, lentil soup, and a scoop of rice. Covers all food groups. French fries - yes, they have them here. I imagine they're as Nepali as a cheeseburger, as they tasted pretty American (French?) I'm a frequent visitor of Vancouver and I've always wanted to stop by this location for many years. Although we have Nepali restaurants where I live, they were some items that really made this place, truly unique. Specifically, I decided to try the Veggie Thukpa, Tibetan butter tea, and tigmo. I normally go for the Momos, I'm a bit of a dumpling enthusiast; but since it was Christmas Day, cloudy and rainy, I decided to indulge myself and something more warm and flavorful. On first glance one would think that Thukpa is the South Asian equivalent to Ramen. I really enjoyed the masala flavored broth and the firm noodles. It was appropriately spiced and was not too salty. It normally comes with a well-known steam bread called Tigmo. It's like a cinnamon roll that has the fluffy consistency of a bao bun. The layers are spiced with turmeric, cilantro, and garlic. It really compliments the broth when you dip it and eat it. I decided to get the Tibetan butter tea. It's a very interesting consistency, it's creamy, but not heavy, and, not salty as I thought it would be. It's a pretty small restaurant, but they make up for it with their food and hosts. read more

I went to this place with my friend because we have never had Nepalese food before and I am so happy that we came here! The exterior and interior of the restaurant followed a similar theme and I really liked how cozy it was. The walls were covered in one big painting of the Himalayas and there were little details of goats and houses, which were very cute. The music and traditional lamps on each table really made me feel like I was transported to another place. My friend and I wanted to order things that we've never had before so we got the taas as an appetizer. There were a lot of lamb pieces and the rice was nicely puffed and flavored with spices, onions, tomatoes, etc. The lamb jhol momos came with three different sauces and the server told us that it was tomato sauce, cilantro sauce and hot sauce. My friend and I both agreed that the cilantro sauce was our favorite. For drinks, we ordered the mango lassi and Tibetan tea. My first time trying mango lassi CHANGED ME, it was so good. The lassi was creamy, perfectly sweet and did not have an artificial mango taste. The Tibetan tea tasted a bit like milk tea, but with a slight salty flavor. I did not enjoy it as much, but I am glad I tried it! We also got their lamb curry, which had meat that was super soft and melted in my mouth, but it tasted similar to other curries I've had. The lentil soup that the curry came with was unique though and I liked it. For dessert, we got the "cheesy pistachio lush," but to our surprise, it was ras malai, which is something I've had before at an Indian restaurant. Ras malai is not like any American dessert, but to best describe it, it has a spongey, creamy, cheese-like texture, and has floral, milky notes. We were shooting for a change of pace and decided to go for Himalayan food and continue our search for more momos! This place is on the second floor of the building (see the outside stairs along the side of the building). We went with steamed lamb momos, the curry okra and the mustard curry fish. Each entree comes with lentil soup and your choice of jasmine rice or naan. We ordered one entree with rice and one with naan but the kitchen sent both entrees out with rice. We ended up getting the naan after we noted the issue. The lamb momos were fantastic - the three sauces they provided were great, but the really spicy one (they warned us) was unbelievably spicy, so be careful. The okra was cooked just rice and the fish was amazing as well. The naan was the winner - nice and fluffy and fresh. read more

The flavors were wonderful. It was our first time to have Mo Mo. they looked like steamed Chinese dumplings, but the fillings had all the rich Himalayan spices. Delicious! I had the overnight marinated grilled lamb plate, and my husband had the traditional "chili" stew. With fish. The coconut rice pudding for dessert was positively dreamy! The Himalayan bread was disappointingly bland (surprising, considering the spices that were rolled up in it ). And the bowl of red lentils that came with our dinners or lukewarm and we asked her to take them back and make them hot in the microwave. The main thing lacking was that the service was really slow (though I will add, this wasn't the only time we experienced slow service in Vancouver ). There were two servers and they didn't really offer any communication about why everything was taking so long. So we did a lot of just sitting there waiting. Went on Thurs for dine out Vancouver and asked our waitress what she recommended so I ordered the chicken momos, 4 Nepalese steamed dumplings with cabbage & spices which came with 3 dipping sauces, red chili which was so good, yellow one which was more mild and a green one, great start to the 3 course meal as she suggested it was their most popular starter. Then I ordered the grill chicken as my entree which was chicken breast marinated overnight in yogurt and Nepali spices. Served with pulau rice and yellow lentil soup. It was a tad bit overcooked as mine were charred but nonetheless pretty good and clean eating. For dessert, I ordered the pistachio lush which is a home made cheese sweetened milk spheres in pistachio-flavoured cream altho I suspect this may not have been homemade as it tasted just like ras malai, an Indian desert made from milk also but it was still pretty good. All in all, dine out menu was very reasonable $34 for a 3 course meal in what I believe is one of the older restaurants on Davie Street and our waitress was so kind and the restaurant has character. read more

Came for the Momos. Stayed for the momos. It's been years since I originally wanted to come to Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen, however, for whatever reason, I've constantly been delayed again and again. Finally, after the long wait, I finally made time in my schedule to take my family out for dinner here and take a small dip into the world of Nepalese cuisine - a terrific amalgamation of Indian and Chinese foods. At Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen, I think I got exactly what I was looking for, and I would be happy to come back again to try some other menu items. Items that we ordered for dinner: - Lamb johl momo, $15.00 - Steamed chicken momo, $13.00 - Nepali bhojan (traditional plate), one lamb and one chicken, $26.00/plate - Tingmo (plain bun), $2.50 - Chicken grill (w/ fries), $19.00 - Chicken curry (w/ rice and lentil soup), $17.00 For my hungry table of four, the total cost was about $120.00 before tax and tips. A couple of takeaways: 1) The traditional plates individually have more than enough food for the average person. Great assortment of flavours and textures, very similar to an assortment you would find at an Indian restaurant. 2) The momos were absolutely delicious. Juicy, never dry, and wrapped lovingly in what I would consider the perfect ratio of wrapper to filling. Served with three different sauces, including a spicy chili sauce and a lighter, green cucumber sauce. I would consider having an entire meal based solely off of momos. The Lamb johl momo was a pleasant surprise! Highly recommend. Overall, I wasn't blown away by anything from the menu, but I will say that everything was decently delicious. Although slightly pricey, considering how niche this type of cuisine is in Vancouver, I will most definitely be back in the future to trial more (momos). read more

The food here is very authentic and awesome. The Nepali Chili section is a must try. The service is very quick and hospitable. Dining experience is quite good. When you enter the restaurant, it ambiance feels like a local restaurant from Nepal and you get the full experience. The one downside is that in several dishes they use a lot of oil by default. I returned for a dine-in meal with my wife, so we could sample more dishes together. This time, we ordered a couple of appies and main dishes, all somewhere between medium and hot spiciness level. Here's then run-down: -Chatpate (puffed rice; $9 plus tax): Nicely textured and seasoned, albeit a bit oversalted. The puffed rice was perfect and the dish came with bits of red and green onion, chickpeas, tomato, and various herbs/spices. I've only had chat a few times, mostly from Indian restaurants, so my point of comparison is limited. But this was nice. 4/5 -Momos (Tibetan-style dumplings with vegetable/tofu; $11 plus tax): Some of the best restaurant dumplings we've had in some time. Generously-sized dumplings, with mostly soft but somewhat crunchy fillings and served with three dipping sauces that complement each other very well. Delicious 4.5/5 -Yellow lentil: I had this last time and it was just as awesome. The use of lime leaf makes this even more complex than a typical dal in Indian cuisine. Nicely spicy, with lots of cumin and lime leaf, and nicely textures... a touch salty. This was served with basmatic rice and papadams. 5/5 -Spinach: This is totally unlike an Indian saag, and I much prefer this. The spinach still retains its form (not pureed), and is cooked with thinly sliced potatoes and a wonderful array of spices. This one was oversalted as well, but still delicious. 4.5/5 Other than the oversalted issue with a bunch of dishes, the food is just wonderful. They really put a lot of care into what they do, including their impeccable service. Reasonably priced and generous portions. I can't say enough good things about this place. Try it! read more

Flavour of the curry gravies were reasonably good, they were tasty, we ordered "medium spicy" and everything was pretty muted, so probably tailored for their typical clientele for the area. Of the four curries, jackfruit and okra curries had reasonable portions of actual jackfruit and okra in the gravy. Goat and lamb curries serves were mostly gravy, there might have been five or six very small pieces of meat in either dish, and those pieces were chewy and tough. I wouldn't recommend ordering either of these if you expect to actually have pieces of the meat in the meat curry you order. Gave this spot a go because fantuan had a 50% off offer - this was out first time ordering from here. It wasn't too terrible because the curry gravy they served up was tasty, but definitely not somewhere I would go out of my way to order or dine here - I like to have meat in the meat curry when I order.. well a meat curry.
