I have tried Angie's a couple of times in the past, and honestly, none of it has been impressive.
But today I just don't know what happened and how poor food is seriously served.
I had a build your own burrito, with surf and turf, pesto, olives, pepperjack, onions pepperocinis, beans and spinach.
First off, I asked for no rice, but got rice anyway. And it wasn't even good rice, it LOOKED dry and unflavored.
I didn't get my cheese, which was disappointing since the pepperjack could've added a little extra depth of flavor to this burrito.
The pesto wasnt bad, nothing to get excited over, it was probably Costco or Resturant Depot pesto, either of those are acceptable.
The toppings were terribly portioned. I got maybe 1oz of beans, a ton of onions, which I don't mind onions, but they throw off the flavor, especially since they are red onions. Having a lot of onions and tiny portions of everything else is both sloppy and I feel intentional.
Now, I wasn't eating this, as I don't normally eat much rice, but I did pick at the meat so I could review this properly.
The steak. It was cooked well, I was surprised. It was juicy and it had sizeable pieces in it. But my goodness it was BLAND. absolutely no flavor. Just thrown on the grill and pulled off and staged or put straight into the burrito with no attention, no nothing.
The shrimp, which I got literally 3 pieces, was dry and had a mild flavor to them, more than the steak, but wasn't nearly enough to save from the dryness. These shrimp were not marinated or cooked properly. Also, the flavor was very lacking in salt.
The tortilla was plain, bland, just a vehicle for the ingredients, no love, no nothing put into that also.
This isn't the first time I've had Angie's food, and this isnt the first time they clearly put little effort into their offerings. Not sure what they are here for. The menu is planned well, and I appreciate the diversity of offerings, but very little is executed with any poise or expertise or effort.
Angie's reminds me of a place that knows what it wants to be in its head, but has no flipping clue on how to achieve it.
And that's sad, because Tucson deserves better.
