Okay, so this is one of those expensive, fancy Mexican restaurants. Located in Pasadena, they couldn't be on a worse street. There is almost no parking around, because all the pandemic outside dining areas have been kept in tact up and down the block, taking away blocks of parking. When will Los Angeles end this nightmare?! Anyway, the good. The restaurant is beautiful. Service is terrific - friendly, attentive, responsive, and personable. People also clearly love it around here, cause it is packed. I always mention that, when it is the case, because you should balance any person's review and personal opinion with the fact that there are many others who would disagree. There, have I been nice enough? Now on to the food. The food is nowhere near the worst I ever had, but it was all pretty bad nonetheless. Let me add, as a condition, I am not a lover of Mexican food or its flavors. I do like it at some places and sometimes, but I'm not one of those people who eats Mexican food once a week or even once a month. I love Latin cuisine but I'm more or of a Cuban, Peruvian, Spanish, Brazilian, Argentinian, or Puerto Rican cuisine person. So, please keep that in mind. We had... the sampler platter appetizer, which I think has flautas and taquitos and stuff. It was all a mush and worst of all there were all these cold sauces poured on top. They took it back the first time when I said everything was cold. Then the second time they explained it's meant to be piping hot food covered in freezing cold sauces. Yucko! Never seen that before in my life in any cuisine. Then we had carne asada platter. This was the best dish and it was still chewy and full of gristle. It was just mediocre (and I've had many carne asada) and way overpriced. The crispy tacos were $20 for 2 super greasy, dripping oil, gross chicken tacos. They said they cannot do beef tacos. What?!?! The Carnitas de lechon a pibil entree was a total waste. None of us would eat it. I'm not sure what human would. The spice combination and flavor profile overall was inedible in my opinion. The food and service here was just fantastic and priced well! 4 of us were walking down Colorado looking for a place for a 5 o'clock dinner and, while not looking for Mexican food, stopped by outside because it looked interesting. We were greeting by Jose, the owner, and starting discussing tequila (my friend and my favorite alcohol) and he sold both us and our wives and we decided to eat there. We ordered chicken mango, a salmon dish and a tequila pasta dish and everyone absolutely loved the food. In addition, the margarita that Jose suggested was also very good. So, on top of the great food our server, Stephanie, was also excellent, answering questions, making suggestions and just being available as needed. We ate outside in front and it was perfect, tables spread apart and most everyone walking by had masks on. Went here for the first time last night. We sat indoors (gasp!!), as the restrictions had finally been lifted and everyone dining was fully vaccinated. We felt safe, as everything was socially distanced. We all got the margarita flight (on special on mondays). It was $22 for three types of margaritas (full on drinks, see pictures). Great deal but we all expected it to be mini margaritas, so definitely Uber there if you're planning on having the whole flight. My friend and I shared the chicken enchiladas and carne asada quesadilla. They were so darn good that I forgot to snap a photo before eating. Truly delicious. Flavorful and sooo filling. Quickly becoming a favorite Mexican spot in Pasadena. Love that they offer daily specials on drinks and food, and service is always so on point. Food is fresh, drinks are delicious and strong if you like that! I was so impressed by the extensive cocktail menu, must try Anayas margarita and La cascada. The agua frescas are a must and you can combine flavors, I did cucumber watermelon and it was perfect. Fajitas are great, and the salmon tostada salad was good but the salmon was fried and coated in teriyaki which I didn't like. Lots of options though so will definitely be back often. read more

Originally planned on going to Oji Sushi next door but restaurant was not following posted hours. Ended up going to Anayas for brunch and will be returning soon. 4 stars!!!! Anayas offers complimentary chips and salsa to start your meal, and we finished every single one of the chips! The chips tasted freshly made and delicious. If you like spicy food, I strongly recommend asking for the hotter salsa to go with your chips and your meal. For brunch, we ordered the Shrimp Ceviche Tostada appetizer ($12), the Shrimp Chile Relleno Plate ($20), and the Crispy Tacos Plate with Shredded Chicken ($10). Just like the chips and salsa, everything we ordered was super tasty and yummy, but my favorite is by and far the Shrimp Chile Relleno. Plenty of shrimp and cheesy goodness wrapped in a delicious and comforting egg batter. The plates also came with one of the yummiest refried beans I've ever had. Our order turned out to be way too much food for two since all portions were huge, so we ended up with huge portions for dinner with our leftovers! According to our server, Anayas just opened this past January. So glad that they are surviving seven months after the pandemic turned everything upside down. They offer curbside dining as well as takeout and delivery through Ubereats and Postmates. Kudos to the City of Pasadena for closing off a lane for outdoor dining; Anayas is able to accommodate at least 15 tables curbside. Hoping to be back to Anayas to dine inside the restaurant sometime in the near future, hopefully soon. Our go-to Mexican restaurant is El Portal about a block away, and it will be pretty hard deciding between the two. Both are delicious, but Anayas may have the edge when considering portion sizes and price. The staff at Anayas was also super friendly and welcoming, and we really appreciate that they checked at least a couple times on the quality of the food. Why just 4 stars? I've been to Anaya's on several occasions, for dinner and drinks. Due past positive experiences today I met a friend for early lunch. We split the roasted tortilla soup and the enchiladas de pollo. The soup was pretty good, generous serving enough for two (3.00 fee for splitting). However, the enchiladas were stellar, stuffed with shredded chicken, topped with a tangy, green tomatillo sauce and cream and queso fresco, served with fluffy rice and beans. Finally ordered takeout from this joint. Glad we did. Everything was delicious. The Diablo Pasta with Shrimps had a nice kick with a good number of shrimps. I've been wanting to try a nice ever since they opened up in Pasadena and I finally got a chance to last week. We showed up with a party of six and we're promptly seated outdoors. We ordered our mango margaritas and the appetizer platter which came up promptly. For entrées, I had the steak plate which was more than enough food for two people. The food was great, the drinks were not strong but still tasty, and I will definitely come back to try the tostada salad in the future. Also, our waiter was awesome and brought us sides of churros with the free check in on yelp!! Parking is a disaster though because the tiny lot located in the back of the restaurant gets super crowded and people tend to double park. I recommend street parking or parking behind Urth Caffé for a comfortable experience. It was great the Coleslaw inside was fresh and crunchy, not too wet. The amount of shrimp was great. My family and I tried Anayas on a trip to LA while staying in Pasadena as it conveniently located to the Hyatt we were staying at. The restaurant was fairly crowded on a weeknight which was a good sign, so I'd recommend trying to get a reservation on the weekends. The food was solid but the prices seemed a tad high, but the portions sizes were massive to make up for it. The 3 of us were able to split an order of the chicken enchiladas and the veggie quesadilla and were stuffed. The service here was also great, very friendly staff. We were at the Pasadena Playhouse and just discovered this jewel around the corner. This is one of the best Mexican Restaurants, on many points; 1) Menu and food quality 2) Delicious drinks 3) Friendly and professional service, and last but not least 4) Super cool and well-done interior decor and atmosphere! We had the Veracruz platters with Jamaica drinks. All fresh and authentic! The chips, tortillas, and salsa were all homemade and the server recommended a side of sauteed serrano peppers since I had to say I liked spicy! OMG! I can't praise Anaya's enough. This is my favorite sit-down Mexican place. They have great food and margaritas and the service is consistently good. Street parking is surprisingly easy to find (it's located a little at the end of Old Town on Colorado) and you probably don't need to make a reservation (though I always do) to get in fairly quickly; there's a lot of seating. The salsa that comes with the chips is super good. I usually get the fajitas; their corn tortillas are homemade which is a plus. Their dishes satisfy the obligatory large amount of food I expect from a Mexican restaurant and there are always leftovers. It's reasonably priced for the amount and quality of food you get. The Anaya's margarita is my favorite, honestly the best margarita I've had. I like the decor; it's like a traditional Mexican restaurant with a modern twist and a cool mural of Frida Kahlo. Anaya's is definitely worth the visit and will very possibly become your go-to. read more

We both ordered their margaritas - they were quite small & they were quite light handed with the tequila. For our entrees we got: salmon tostada & the chicken enchilada. Both were very flavorful. I recently came to this restaurant with my mom and girlfriend. The decor of this place is pretty nice. The customer service isn't bad but it wasn't great either. It didn't seem like the staff knew who our waiter was & suddenly we had no waiter for a good period of time. The restaurant was maybe filled at half capacity when we were there & the service was still slow. It took almost 20 minutes to get our drinks & the waiter explained to us that the drinks are custom & they typically take 20 minutes to make. Sounds like an excuse to me. The food is extremely average. There's nothing great about it & it's pretty overpriced for what you get. It was good to have at least tried this place since I am local, but I don't see myself returning anytime soon. read more
