Always driving past this street and never been inside this restaurant. Finally got to try it and loving it a lot. The outdoor seating is really nice, especially when it's not that hot outside. We ordered the chicken taquitos with guacamole and Chicken & Machaca Enchiladas. The food was so delicious and service was great. We didn't get to try their desserts cuz we were stuffed. Definitely coming back to try their Happy Hour menu. Only down side is their parking lot is very small so it's hard to find a parking spot.

4.5 I was so happy to be invited to a private event! I heard the place wasn't that great, but the buffet totally changed my mind. I tried Achiote Chicken, Pork Chili Verde, Steak Picado, rice, beans, and salad, all super flavorful and delicious. Even the chips, salsa, and guacamole were really good. The vibe was great, and the servers were fast, friendly, and attentive. It was a fun evening with friends! Parking was a bit odd cause it seemed hella small but luckily there was some available in the lot.

Happy Hour margs, need I say more?! Hard to believe that this restaurant is over 100 years old, not many establishments can say that. It is a real cornerstone of Pasadena dining, there is a love or hate feeling when you bring up this restaurant among locals. Chips and salsa is provided with orders so it is the perfect after work stop. They do have better the ability to make quality margaritas for full price which is almost 2-3 times happy hour but if you like mezcal it might be worth it for a more refined taste. Conveniently located by the 210/134 freeway entrances, it has it's own lot that says a lot for Pasadena establishments.

We love Mijares! Friendly staff who always remember us & are genuinely kind. Chill, family style vibe. Beautiful light music. Open patio & air conditioned interior. Food is INCREIBLE. We come OFTEN.

Mijares has been around over 100 years, although it started as a just a tortilla store. Jesucita Mijares, the first owner fled the revolution in Mexico. Somehow she decided to settle in Pasadena where she opened a tiny Tortilla Factory & established the restaurant. I think the original place had a bad fire and it was rebuilt. It is so very comfortable and clean and just pretty. This is traditional Mexican food. She used all her her original recipes and they still do. They are well known for their Happy Hour and their Margaritas. They have indoor and outdoor dinning. The prices are fair for Pasadena. The food is stellar. Make a reservation. They also have a banquet room and private dinning. The enchiladas are excellent and their rice and beans are so good. Make sure to get tortillas. Their hard tacos and chili relleno are so great. Everything is great. You will love it.

Such a nice place for Mother's Day dinner! We came here with my husband's mom and grandma and it was the perfect spot! My mother-in-law and grandma shared that they had the perfect time! I left my sunglasses here and we called and spoke with the manager (we think?) and they were so so kind! The food was so so yummy too! They even had mariachis and they got tears out of us! The ambiance is so so classic and nice too! We loved all of it! Thank you for a perfect night, Mijares!!

Went here for our annual office Christmas party. First time here, and as a longtime resident of the City of Roses, I feel a bit ashamed for not visiting sooner. This really is a Pasadena institution. Needless to say, Mijares is extremely popular. Every time I pass by, the parking lot is always full. Speaking of the parking lot, it's very small. Good luck trying to find a spot. You might get lucky in one of the adjacent residential streets. Maybe. I ended up parking off of Fair Oaks, which is like a 10-minute walk from Mijares. Inside is much more spacious than it looks from the outside. Plenty of seating, including a large outdoor patio. This is a great place for large group gatherings. There's a nice little full bar inside, too, that seats about 10 or so. Staff is efficient and friendly. Menu is LARGE. You'll take a while trying to find something. Prices are a little steep. Ordered the following: - Crab enchiladas - 6.5/10: A little disappointed in this one. It was just cheese enchiladas with some crab bits on top. The crab was a bit tasteless and was similar to the canned stuff you get at the grocery store. Accompanying frijoles and rice were good, though. - Strawberry margarita - 7.5/10: Not bad. A little on the light side, though. The avocado dip I'd say was the best dish for me. Super fresh and tasty. Not sure if I'd come back just because of the hassle trying to get in, but I wouldn't mind. This is a fun, relaxing place that's steeped in history.

Great place to bring family and friends especially after work gatherings- they accommodate large groups and they're so accommodating not only was the food delicious their service was amazing and they have such a great patio area to accommodate large parties.

Mijares is one of Pasadena's prettier Mexican restaurants and also its oldest, around since 1920. It's apparently situated on the site of founder Jesucita Mijares' original tortilla factory, restaurant and residence. It's still run by her family. It's a large space, with good-sized indoor dining rooms plus several patios and a large banquet room with its own patio. Even its parking lot is pretty spacious. The menu is quite extensive and includes an all-day breakfast section. The prices are perhaps on the slightly pricey side, but their Birthday offer for Birthday Club members is quite nice, includes a combo and flan! My combo #12 was fine, although the chile relleno was a bit generic. The machaca con huevos I ordered to go was very good, as was the flan. Service was friendly if a bit sparse. Overall a decent choice for Mexican in Pasadena, with a lot of history. I would say my go to is still Cabrera's for the food, but Mijares has a nicer atmosphere.

Mijares has been in business for 100+ years, they are a favorite among locals. Whether you are here by yourself, dinner for two, or a private party in the banquet room, they've got you covered. It's a lively place with a full sports bar with high-top tables when you enter, or request a table in one of their dining rooms. I do like the Guacamole that is prepared tableside, it's worth every penny and calorie!!! My usual meal for lunch or dinner is Chicken Mole Enchiladas, the sauce is rich and thicker than the green or red Chile version. If you want to try a variety, they have an appetizer sampler, sizzling fajitas, fully-loaded nachos, cheese or shrimp quesadillas (non-meat). Be adventurous and try the "Garbage" burrito filled with everything (lol) and your choice of chicken, beef, pork or veggie style. Make reservations by calling 1-626-792-2763 and don't forget to tell'em that Rosemary sent ya!!

Went for lunch on a Sunday. We didn't get the buffet - although it looked like a nice spread. We had street tacos, a beef burrito, and a quesadilla. Service was great. Waiters kept bringing chips and salsa. We had to ask them to stop as we were getting full just from them. The street tacos were ok. I thought they'd have traditional street taco toppings like cilantro and onions, but they had cheddar looking cheese on them. Honestly, the tacos were somewhat average - meat was on the dry side. I didn't try the other dishes but the burrito had diced tomatoes in them, which I thought was weird. Price was a bit on the expensive side. $22 for three tacos with rice and beans. $22 for a burrito and another $5 to put some cheese and green sauce on it to make it "wet". Overall, it pains me to give them only 3 stars because the waiters were so great, but the food was pretty mediocre.

The food was AMAZING! We had an issue with a huge bus blocking the parking lot against oncoming traffic and the manager or owner who came out was so rude we didn't really want to stay but we stayed to celebrate a family member's birthday. The drinks were just ok but we all loved our food. The guac was pretty bland and lacked salt though. The other staff waiting our table was nice and the outdoor seating was pleasant.

Margarita? Extra Chips & Salsa? Yes sir!

Three words: Cinco de Mayo. Says it all, yes? I figured it would be a zoo at happy hour and dinner today, so I snuck in for lunch instead. Busy, but my plan was executed to perfection. They sat me quickly, immediately brought out chips and salsa and water, and dare I say...a margarita? How did that get ordered? Anyway, a carne asada burrito and margarita was just what the doctor ordered. Or I ordered. Ok. It was me. The chips were fresh and warm, very good salsa. The burrito was big, hot, fresh, delicious, and I couldn't finish it all. Margarita? OK, I finished that. Did I mention it was Cinco de Mayo? Congrats on a century of serving great food, Mijares, and cheering you on for a century more.

Ask the Community - Mijares Mexican Restaurant

Is it full bar. Jack and coke?

I've never had a drink at the bar but from what I remember it looks like a full bar.

What options for vegetarians do you have eg do the beans have lard? Does the enchilada sauce have chicken base?

We don’t use lard. We use veg oil. No chicken base in the enchiladas. We have vegetarian fajitas, if you see our menu we have a “V” next to the items that are vegetarian.

Will you be bringing back your super popular Sunday buffet brunch?

They said they will bring it back on Sunday, March 6th. She was tentative on that date so I would call to verify. Hope that helps.

Can we dish our own food at your Sunday brunch or is it served to us?

Yes! Buffet Style! My Mom is the owner & oversees our buffet every Sunday! We have the same items on the Alice's Sunday Brunch Menu on line at http//www.www.Mijares restaurant.com

Is there anyone I can speak to about a group reservation? I've been calling this past week with no luck.

Last weekend we went to Saladang Song and a party of 6 adults and 2 kids were told they could not sit more than 6 to a table. Perhaps that's why they're not replying.

Do you still make your own tortillas? Are the tortillas still made in-house?

Hi Eric, We we’re making fresh tortillas on Sunday’s when we were able to offer Bruch. We make our own chips but not tortillas. I see you uploaded pictures but did not give us a 5 star review.

Will you be closing on Friday?

No, Mijares will be open. We are allowed to serve outdoors on our 4 patios here in Pasadena. We do not serve indoors. Mijares will continue to be open each week Tuesday-Sunday 11am- 8pm. Call for a reservation or just walk-in, order food togo with…

Are the beans or the rice cooked with any chicken stock or lard? Looking for vegan (not just vegetarian!) options.

Great question! The Mijares rice is made with chicken stock. We don’t use any Lard what so ever. We use Canola oil. Beans are just beans. Absolutely no Lard or stock. I hope this helps.

    Is brunch offered on Saturdays?

Hello Dawn. We do not offer brunch on Saturdays. Thank you for asking.

I will definitely be returning and with a group of friends again because the space is very nice and the vibes were great! Perfect spot for game days or an outing with some buddies. As for parking, it's located in the busy area of Pasadena and centered around a residential area expect to park far or in a parking structure; that means walking! Although, that's not a deal breaker as the area offers plenty to do and all within walking distance.

For example, they have a Spanish Language Brewery Meet-up every 3rd Thursday from 7:30-9:30pm monthly. Parking is street only so be mindful of the neighbors. There is no food service at this location but they seem to partner with a couple food trucks serving tacos. Some inside open air seating but the main draw is the relaxing patio. I liked their hard seltzers with fun flavors as jicama, tamarindo and passionfruit. I didn't like so much their signature Yerba Mate Pale Ale, but thought it was an interesting concept. The happy hour special is Monday all day and Tuesday-Friday open until 6pm $2 off full pours. Very family friendly, I always see a couple tables with children and dogs at them. Maybe I'm getting to be an old fuddy duddy but I hate when parents let their kids go free range. Screaming and running around like the establishment is a park these kids becoming trip hazards. There needs to be a revamp of their board game collection. There three boxes of games that looked incomplete or used up, not good with such games as Scrabble and Pictionary. Free Wifi with log-in is a bonus!

It really hits the spot when you're craving comforting, flavorful Mexican food. The chips are fresh, the salsa is good, and the menu has offerings that feel more authentic and varied than a lot of other places. I especially appreciate that they have Yucatán cuisine options, which you do not always see at every Mexican restaurant. I am also very fussy with mole and typically do not like it at all, but I actually really enjoy the mole from El Portal. It has been a real eye-opener for me and honestly inspired me to give mole another shot elsewhere. One thing to keep in mind: a lot of the combo plates are smothered in delicious red sauce and plenty of cheese, so if you are not a big cheese person, just be aware before ordering. The enchiladas are good, though sometimes they could use a little more sauce, as the tortillas can come out a bit dry. The margaritas are tasty, but they do feel a little small for the price (Roughly $16 for a 8oz glass?!) The staff are friendly, the vibe is nice, and overall the food is consistently good. The only other heads-up is that some of the tables and booths are pretty small, so it can feel a little cramped in the main dining room. Also, **make sure you get your parking validated**. This is important because if you do not, the parking lot can be extremely expensive. You can also look for street parking on Green Street. Still, El Portal is a spot I really enjoy and it is on our regular rotation of places to dine.

But the velvety red enchiladas are a dream. The whole fried fish is crispy and served hot. The chile verde tart and savory with tender pieces of pork, the enchiladas suizas a perfect mix of sour and savory. Lightly battered with a touch of heat, the chile reinos are delicious. In the summer, the ceviches are outstanding as are the sopas and tostadas. Very personable and jolly hosts/owners, Lupitas wins on all fronts. This was actually our second attempt, the first time we showed up on a Saturday afternoon they were closed, despite their online hours saying otherwise. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and came back. Service was okay. The food? Disappointing. The shrimp cocktail was the whole reason we made the trip. It tasted watered down, had no seasoning, no lemon, and still had shell on the shrimp. It genuinely tasted like a pre-made Costco cocktail in red dyed water. The fajita plate (shrimp, beef, and chicken) was passable but nothing special. What really ended it for us were the hidden fees. We ordered the fajita plate $30 (+ taxes) a massive spread with a separate plate of rice and beans and they brought out THREE corn tortillas. THREE... I am Mexican. I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants in my lifetime and have never been given only three tortillas for a plate that size. We asked for more tortillas and were charged $4 with zero warning. It's not about the money it's the principle. The charge was never disclosed. When I brought it up with the owner, Lupita, she was dismissive and couldn't explain the reasoning it's not even homemade tortillas. You can literally buy 90 tortillas for $4 at a grocery store! She took off one of the charges but kept the other $2. Meanwhile, they offer unlimited chips and complimentary salsa without blinking. The inconsistency is baffling. We genuinely wanted to support this family-run restaurant we loved seeing the family come in together. But the disrespect during that conversation made it impossible to leave on good terms. Do yourself a favor and drive about a 1.5 miles down the street to El Metate. Their large shrimp cocktail is $15, is so flavorful, and the staff treats you like family. Their pozole is outstanding too. We found them on our first failed attempt to come here and we'll be going back to them exclusively from now on. We will never return to Lupita's and made it clear to not go there in our community thread with 15K people. Unless you like hidden fees and mediocre tasteless overpriced food then this is your place otherwise...don't come here.
