Picante has been a gem in Pasadena forever!!! I've been coming here since I was a kid. Being from, and raised in Dena!! This place has a special place in my heart. I don't come very often after I moved, but they have really good authentic Mexican food here. I come when I can. My entire family loves this place. A very good menu and reasonable prices with quality food. I tried the chicken fajitas and OMG it was very fresh and hot!!! Good flavor and cooked just right. The service is very exceptional here!! Very good personalities and generous!! It's not too big inside but it hold about 6 tables or so. Nice chill ambiance but most of the time I do take out!! I really like their pollo asado burritos. But be careful when you order as they get it confused with carne asada burritos. And their carne asada is some of the worst that I've ever had. Sadly, when you get home and find out they gave you carne asada instead of pollo asado it's too late. I used to go here years ago. While taking my mom to the beauty shop adjacent to the restaurant, I went inside to see if they had the same food and menu. They had the same menu and food which I was ecstatic about. The only thing that changed was that they had new owners. I ordered my favorite chicken fajitas with rice and beans and a flour tortilla. The food was still excellent like I remembered. The chicken was flavorful and the rice and beans were tasty. I love green sauce it has nice spices with acting. I love this place I am glad I went back. Very expensive in the shopping center and the food is inexpensive. Great variety of food options and specials. The cook Esmeralda was kind and the manager Danica I believe, was so kind, professional, and very accommodating. Great place to dine at for quality authentic Mexican food. I was working with clients in the Altadena area (doing fire recovery work) and stopped in here for lunch. This is like a family business with two ladies who seemed maybe to be family working the kitchen. They have a traditional Mexican menu, which was actually fine. The place seems a little disorganized and maybe not the cleanest or most modern-it has a bit of a disheveled atmosphere. But the service was fine, food was a good value, and came out quickly. How was the food? It was "good" but not what I would call "great." I would call it "serviceable" Mexican food. I would try it again if in the neighborhood and wanted Mexican, but I would not go much out of my way for it, or call it special. read more

Definitely recommend this cafe!!! I called ahead to see if they had vegetarian beans! Yes!!! And I was thrilled with the service. Two kind & hospitable women...I felt like I was in their home getting fed...and it was delicious, home cooked food! She asked me if I wanted refried or cooked pinto beans...she put a big spoon into the huge pot that was cooking & lifted out a spoonful of beautiful pinto beans. Oooh, I wanted those on my tacos. The presentation of my tacos was beautiful (as you see in my photo) & delicious with a fresh aftertaste! The chips were great & yummy salsa. I was more than satisfied. 5s I'll definitely be back! Outstanding food. The people actually care about you and your experience. Wall menus are mostly in Spanish. This place will strike gringos as more authentic. But servers speak English and good service and good food leap over any cultural hesitancies. There was only one person taking orders and waiting tables, and she still brought us "made today in our kitchen" chips and salsa with a smile. Place sits 20 diners at a time. 7 of us here now. I went there for lunch because I had a dental appointment beforehand at the dentist next door. Honestly this is not the best place to eat. The restaurant needs some serious upgrades. The food gave me heartburn and didn't have anything spicy. All I ordered was tacos with rice and beans. I wished I would have liked them but unfortunately it wasn't the best Mexican food. Went tonite ( after not going ) for about 15 yrs or so. The cheeseburger special was yum and also carnitas tacos. I did order a wet carnitas burrito to go ( but next time will prob ) say no rice. It was way too much rice , little bit of meat and cheese. And at first the green chili tasted mild ( but it was too spicey ) for me.
