On the way back, hunger kicked in, so we decided to check out HomeState in Pasadena. Okay, California...not bad. Not bad at all. For a little Tex-Mex dining outside of Texas, I'm gonna say they came pretty damn close! We had the Vaquero Taco, Chicken Taco and Ranch Salad, and the best way I can describe HomeState is this: this is Tex-Mex doing the Twist and Shout rather than "Hey Baby, Qué Pasó?" It has its own California rhythm, but you can definitely hear Texas playing underneath it. And the food was excellent. The Vaquero Taco hit all the right notes...pulled brisket with just the right blend of spices, pickled jalapeños, onions, cilantro and lime, all sitting on a corn tortilla. Smoky, tangy, spicy and fresh without any one ingredient trying to overpower the others. The Chicken Taco was another winner. Pulled chicken seasoned just right, guacamole and fresh cabbage. Simple ingredients, but when they're put together correctly, you don't need to complicate things. But that Ranch Salad... By far one of the best salads I've had at a Tex-Mex eatery. Organic market lettuces, black beans, avocado, Monterey Jack, pickled onions, pico de gallo and crispy tortilla strips. Add Mary's Chicken and you've got one hell of a combination. The citrus vinaigrette is excellent too, but honestly? The salad has so much flavor you almost don't need it. They've also got a decent beer selection, artisan tequila cocktails, lemonades and some great coffee. Me? I settled for a good ol' Modelo. And they served it in a mason jar. Loved that! The place was absolutely packed. Every table seemed filled with families eating, talking and having a great time. I don't think I ever saw the ordering line disappear. HomeState had that constant hum a good neighborhood restaurant should have...the sound of conversation, food hitting tables and people genuinely enjoying themselves. Service was excellent, but what really stayed with me was how everything came together...the decor, the food, the smells, the energy. For a moment, it took me somewhere else. It reminded me of being around my mother's kitchen while she made tortillas by hand, hearing that rolling pin pounding away in cadence with your heartbeat. There are certain smells, sounds and flavors that don't just remind you of home; they take you there. Yeah...that's how HomeState made me feel. I've been coming ever since, through all the different locations and price changes. I remember when the fish tacos were just 99 cents on Tuesdays, then $1.25, and now they're two for $3.55. You do have to order in pairs, though, so if you want three tacos, you'll have to get four. They've expanded to about 12 locations throughout LA and East LA, which makes it convenient depending on where I'm going. I live in the San Fernando Valley, but whenever I have plans in Pasadena, I'll drive down to the Altadena location since it's right around the corner. I'll run my errands in the area and, of course, make a stop for my favorite tacos! The staff is always nice, especially the woman I usually order from. She lets me practice speaking Spanish with her while I'm still learning, and I really appreciate that. I'll typically get two fish tacos, or four if I'm especially hungry. Overall, Tacos Ensenada is my ultimate favorite fish taco spot in Los Angeles. I've been coming here for years, and even with all the price changes and new locations, the tacos are still worth the trip. If you love fish tacos, I highly recommend giving them a try!

But we saw all the cars parked on the street and then the line of people at the truck. My girlfriend was like "I don't wanna wait a half hour to eat" but because of how late it was (they stay open till 2:30 am) we decided to stay and give it a try. It was astonishing how fast they were moving people through that line! From the time we hit that parking lot, we were feasting within 5-7 mins. They only serve 2 things - street tacos ($2.50 each) and we later saw that they also serve nachos (not sure what the price is on nachos - but we'd love to try those next time ). They have a wonderful assortment of meats as you can see from my pic: asada (steak), pastor (BBQ pork), carnitas (fried pork), chicharron (spicy pork), cabeza (beef cheek) & pollo (chicken). We got asada, pastor and pollo tacos and they were VERY good. You can get spicy or mild and they come with onions & cilantro. There are 4 or 5 guys cooking and as soon as you tell them what you want they are handing to you - not kidding, lightning fast, hot & fresh! It is artistic how well-oiled their whole business runs and is VERY impressive!! They don't have actual tables (because that would be inefficient). The auto repair shop has installed a pull-down shelf on the parking lot wall that you walk over to once you have your food and it is very efficient and absolutely perfect for this location. Again, this one our most impressive finds and $14 for 5 tacos and a 5 min wait for what looks to be a 30+ min wait is just unheard of. 5 stars all day long!!
