I ordered a veggie sope ($9) and a bean and cheese torta ($15), which ironically arrived without any beans. Both items were pretty bland. While the phone service was super friendly and delivery meant I missed out on extra hot sauce, the food itself still shouldn't lack this much flavor for the price. I just ordered from them for the first time for delivery! I think I need to just go in person next time. This review is just to warn you not to order for delivery! They don't have the proper packaging and everything spilled. The "plate" wasn't a plate and packaged all in small containers that spilled. Plus the veggies came wrapped in foil that was also all placed in a really really small bag. I couldn't even arrange it onto a plate at home myself, I had to throw it out unfortunately. This is a friendly place. It's very small, making it a great place to sit with a friend in a quiet atmosphere. It's not a place for a big party, but if you get your food to go, there is a courtyard around back. We usually go for breakfast after going to the farmers market. I always get chilaquiles verdes con cesina (try it once and you'll know why!). My daughter tells me that the birria chilaquiles is "bomb". The portions are huge. I love the al pastor. The flavor is perfectly spicy and just the right amount of sweet to make your mouth very very happy. The staff are so friendly here. It really feels like the perfect place after shopping Old Town for some down time with delicious food. There are parking lots all around the area, and one can - occasionally - find street parking. Came here with some girlfriends for a quick dinner. It was pretty empty on a Saturday at 7pm. It's a pretty small establishment with maybe 4 tables and some window counter seating but clean and welcoming. So one downside was they only accepted cash or Zelle and they didn't really have an itemized tab. I ordered the birria chilaquiles and asked to add guacamole. My friends ordered the birria plate and menudo both with flour tortillas. We also got individual flan desserts as well. When it came out they got corn tortillas and I didn't notice mine did not include the guacamole I asked for until after we left. So not the best about making sure orders are accurate. Another downside of them not using a computer system since I'm pretty sure I was charged for the guac and didn't get it. As for the food, it was just ok. Not the best and not the worst and that was the consensus amongst the group and we grew up in El Sereno so we know good Mexican food. My chilaquiles didn't taste like the chips were freshly it was already pretty soggy. It's all right for Pasadena but for authentic Mexican this is prob not where you'll want to go and price point was a little on higher end. read more

This place was recommended to me by a local business owner. I walked in and was impressed with the large menu for such a small restaurant. There are about four tables and some barstools along the window. It took me a while to decide as they have burritos, tacos, tamales, tostadas, sopes, enchiladas, and tortas! I finally decided on a sope, which is one of my childhood favorites. The sope itself was thinner and crispier than I am used to, but the toppings of refried beans and shredded chicken were fresh and tasty. I opted to nix the lettuce due to the current national parasite outbreak. I choose the medium hot salsa which added a tasty kick. The owner, who has been here for the last 31 years, told me that everything is made in house, even the agua frescas. I enjoyed the agua de tamarindo with my meal and I can attest that it was actually fresh and thirst quenching, not the overly sweet drinks that I usually see offered. Give Tortas Mexico a try. I ordered the vegetarian taco after reading this restaurant sold the best vegetarian tacos in the area in a magazine. I ordered at the counter and ate outside. The woman who took my order was nice. The inside was colorful, and there were a few tables outside. The vegetarian taco was very full with ingredients including a generous portion of fresh avocado, rice, lettuce, tomato, beans and cheese. You can select the salsa based on spice level. I tried the Carne Asada Tostada and it was to die for! It was so delicious with the Lettuce, Cheese and Sour Cream made every bite delicious. My boyfriend tried the Tinga Tostadas and I had a bite of his and it was also very tasteful. I'm definitely going to be coming back. read more

At 1pm they only had 4 and I needed a dozen more! Tortas Mexico has great Yelps so I trust my brethren here. With faith I was able to call in my order, find an empty parking spot on Union, hustled up Fair Oaks and all was ready. The jalapeño and cheese had a healthy kick of spice which I like. The sweet pineapple have a nice amber colored masa to tell they are different from the savory. I put them in a slow cooker with a little water to keep them hot to transport to a dinner party. Everyone wanted to know where the tamales came from! My only recommendation is a way to identify the assortment when taken out of the bags.... I mixed them up once played and thought the green dot was sweet... They were jalapeño! The best part about the food here, was the cashier. She's really sweet, pretty, and patient with you when you order your food. Outside of the service, the food is okay at best. I didn't like that when I asked for sour cream in my asada burrito, there was none in there. The cheese they use in my burrito wasn't that great either and I couldn't finish it. Lastly, I tried their jello since I'm a huge fan of jello. The taste was not really there for me and it had the consistency of cheese instead of jello. I will say, maybe I ordered the wrong food item since they were advertising tortas and birria tacos more than anything else. I will come back to try new things and because of the service. read more

We were very hungry and looking for some Mexican food to eat. We were not disappointed. We ordered (2) Tortas one which was the Birria torta with consomé and the Al Pastor one. FYI...If you order the Al Pastor you will get pork meat that is marinated in their secret sauce. Being OG I was expecting the usual cut which is the carne asada style type of marinated meat. Although it was stacked with all the fixings, I'm gonna have to say that the Birria torta blew away the Al Pastor. If you like Birria, you will definitely enjoy sinking your teeth into this torta. The consomé dip just puts it over the top. 5 stars just on this torta alone. It was my first visit to this establishment. So I will revisit and choose other items from their menu to review at a later date. It has a nice ambience and vibe. You can choose to sit inside which seemed a little cramped for my personal taste or outside under a covered walkway. After taking a walk through old town Pasadena we followed the most amazing smell. We discovered Tortas Mexico. While we weren't ready to eat, we decided we wanted to return and experience the amazing food. We ordered chips, salsa, guacamole and salsa verde. For our meals, we gad the Birria tortas and beef tacos. Amazing. The owner suggested menu items for our next trip to them; we will definitely be returning.
