If I could rate this place 0 based on first impression I would. Let's put it this way, about 10 of us pulling a late night at work needed some grub and this was the only spot open in town. We left and drove an extra 5-10 miles up to IHOP on Leesburg Pike because no one could stand the smell as soon as we walked in the door. Literally nearly made 3 members of our group hurl. They have something here for everyone. For being a 24 hour diner you would expect the food to be a little so so, but it is actually pretty good. I have tried a little but of everything over the years and I can say I have not had a bad meal. The service can be a little slow though, but its nice to just sit and relax. read more

We had our wedding reception there and everything was impeccable and just like we dreamed to have it. The food was salmon, broccoli, and mashed potatoes. We also had our cake made at the Amphora Bakery. They did a fantastic job making it exactly like we wanted. The flavor for the cake was red velvet, and wow! Everybody complimented everything. Not only was the room gorgeous, the tables were set up nicely, and the food was the number one thing! I was so proud. I'm not sure how the restaurant is for a regular day, but for big events, I highly recommend it! We had about 65 people in our reception. It was wonderful! read more

Grew up going here and always loved it...especially on the weekends for breakfast. Just seems the original family owners are not as present as the service was okay but with no customer engagement. Staff attitude seems to be one of quiet desperation. Food was okay but not the same quality that this landmark has been known for. Amphora omelet was thrown together and overcooked. I used to come here ALOT late night from parties, clubbing, etc. Now that I've discovered better 24 hour joints, I haven't been back since! The food here is usually consistent. I've never really had BAD food before, but its not the best. I prefer amphora over ihop any day, but then again a lot of places are better than ihop. Service is 75% okay. If you want GOOD food late night, go to Annandale or Ba Le in Falls Church. They don't serve traditional American, but the food is MUCH better. read more

I'm a fan of the Amphora in Vienna "from way back," and enjoy this location as well, which is sort of the "Uptown Cousin" to the original...... Visited here last week on Monday night. I stop here sometimes for dinner, and have never been disappointed. My partner had the chicken parm (my "old standby" from the Vienna days......) and I had the chicken fried steak. Both entrees were nice, and neither were expensive considering all that you get. Vegetables tasted fresh, and were neither over, or under-cooked. Chicken fried steak often leaves you feeling like a beached whale, but that was not the case here. Light breading, and the gravy/sauce was NOT "gloppy," as it can be sometimes. There is a full bar/wine list here. A glass of red wine was a nice accompaniment, the house red was decent, and a good value. They use the nicest coffee here, nice and smooth, good for black coffee drinkers like me. We were in luck, as Monday was "National Pie Day" and we shared a German Chocolate pie, hadn't seen THAT before, it was quite good. The Amphora probably costs a little more than your average diner, but there aren't many diners around Herndon, and the quality is definitely better than the Tastee in Fairfax. Horrible!!! I went with a large group and our salads had been sitting out for a while if the half melted ice in the glasses meant anything. And all the water they had was filled with little pieces of white...something. Even when asked if it was lemon water and then to replace it, the new water still had them. Their glasses were dirty, and one member of my group could see possible lip marks on the glass from someone else. Now to the food. The salad was marginal at best, I'm pretty sure it was a Caesar prepackaged from the store, or at least that level. The main course included a cooked chicken breast, a single meatball with red sauce, two seasoned slices of potato, and a variety of partially cooked vegetable slices. The chicken tasted...wrong. Just wrong. Like it was diseased or something. The meatball wasn't too bad, but under the circumstances I still wonder if there's something I don't know. The potatoes were actually good, but the vegetables were cold and definitely under cooked. Finally, the dessert was a slice of chocolate cake (supposedly). In reality, the top cm or so plus the frosting detatched from the rest of it, and then the main body simply looked like a kitchen sponge spray painted dark brown. At that point, none of us trusted the food at all so even the bravest of us only tried one or two bites before leaving. Since Yelp won't let me give zero stars, I'll justify the single one with the fact that the staff was cordial and they served fanta, albeit in their dirty glasses. Amphora is just about the best thing in Northern VA. I can literally sit down at 3am and order ANYTHING (from eggs benedict to moussaka to salmon salad to sirloin steak), which comes out quickly and is consistently delicious. I mean, come on -- even Taco Bell is closed by that point, and you know the quality of food you'd get there if they weren't. The wait staff is attentive & prompt without interrupting too much (rocking some snazzy server jackets), the coffee is great, desserts are phenomenal, and prices are reasonable. The whole place is well-preserved and authentic without being over the top or stuffy. Definitely recommend to anyone at any hour of the day! read more

I would like to say one of the best customers service experiences I have had in a while in Northern VA. Last night my wife decided on Amphora for dinner and might I say great choice. My 5 year son loves breakfast food and my wife wanted to see the options but decided breakfast as well. I choose dinner. Satisfying all different cravings in a normal family now a days. We were surprised at the large selection but very impressed with the results. Our waiter was very respectful, as the manager Steve was as well. They greeted us at the door and proceeded to a booth covid19 safety protocol distance. The resturaunt is very spacious. Our food came in a prompt manner and our drinks never stay empty. What more can you ask for. My 5 year old told the manager Steve and our waiter they were the best cooks! My wife enjoyed the bread they use for the French toast...I did too...very good. I never thought my son would eat that much pancakes but let me tell you..fluffy and good...needless to say his plate was almost empty. I personally had the chicken Florentine, I believe I spelled that right, amazing! I had a Cesar salad that was delicious as well but when my plate came, they mean business. I could only eat a 3rd of my plate but it was delicious. Our server was about to supply me with a to go container and we were happy and satisfied. We will be returning due to the respect, courtesy, hospitality, and can not forget the food is amazing. I came here once about a year and a half ago at 12AM. As you can imagine, the only kind of food places that are open late at night in Herndon are typically fast food joints. Wanting something more substantial and a little bit nicer than McDonalds at midnight, my friend and I decided to come to Amphora Diner. The diner was surprisingly not as empty as we had imagined, which was nice and made us feel like we weren't dining alone. The food options are typical diner food options--breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert at any time of the day. Their menu is absolutely huge and could make a thin novel in itself. They boast being able to offer over 300 different menu items--and of course when you have a menu that extensive you aren't going to get 5 star food. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie, which I actually really enjoyed. The creamy and buttery mashed potatoes covered by a cheesy and gooey crust were really good and really satisfied my late night greasy food craving. I haven't tried anything else on their menu. Service was very, very slow however--might have been due to the time of day. If I ever have a late night diner food craving, I'll definitely come to Amphora again. read more

Never go hungry at Sephora! They have a large menu with something for everyone, including 24 hr breakfasts. Their Greek dishes are fantastic. I love their club sandwich. As soon as you walk in, you see their amazing bakery displays. Cakes, pies, cheesecakes, tarts. How can one restaurant have so many selections?! I have been here twice for lunch and each time, have had to spend an inordinate amount of time perusing the menu. One thing that can be said is that there is something for everyone and all meals are of good size so you will not go away hungry. The first time, I tried the Classic Reuben sandwich, an open faced sandwich with corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut. I don't think I've even had a Reuben sandwich so I don't have experiences to compare it to but this was not very exciting. It didn't have a lot of flavor and required utensils as it was too big to pick up without an additional piece of bread. The accompanying fries were okay. The second time, I had the Caesar salad toped with grilled chicken. The salad was good and the chicken was tender. My colleague had the huevos rancheros (breakfast 24 hours a day!) - the plate was huge! Bottom line is that service is good, food is plentiful although I did not have anything that was outstanding. The choices are plentiful so you can find something for everyone. I would recommend a perusal of the menu ahead of time if you are in a hurry. In the area for Thanksgiving and Friday Morning before heading home to NJ we stopped at Amphora for breakfast. Once again the meal was a delight and the service was excellent. Actually the best service I have had at a diner. The coffee cup was never empty and the coffee was very good. I had a mushroom omelet with cheddar cheese. Excellent. Mushrooms were good, appeared to be fresh, the cheese was delicious. My wife had the Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries and she simply raved. My older boy had a bagel and lox platter. A large portion of lox on a nicely toasted bagel. Our younger boy loved the scrambled eggs, french fries and toast. As I have said, I judge diners outside of New Jersey based on how they would compare to a NJ diner. This one would be among the best in our area, maybe the very best. The best thing - 24 hour service. You can rely on this place to be open all the time, and the food quality is the same all around the clock. The interior of Amphora's is very homey - it's like your typical diner, but a little more formal. A lot of people tend to go here after church on Sundays, so expect it to be crowded then (or on the weekends in general). The servers are always friendly and attentive - I don't think I've ever had a problem with any of them, and I've been here a lot. The food choices here are really varied, which makes for hard choosing and easy satisfaction. It was established as a Mediterranean restaurant, but there are a lot of other choices. Their breakfast choices are great (try to Belgian waffle!), but there's plenty of sandwich and entree choices. The menu is huge, so take your time looking through. Also, if you have kids, the kids menu is great - my younger brother loves the meatloaf. The prices are also really good for the portions you get, so it's affordable for those who are short on money. Amphora is really accommodating for groups, so come with friends and pick things to share - they're not skimpy about the portions and they're happy to provide plates to share. read more

Granted, it's still diner food, but the fact that you can get eggs benedict at 3 in the morning and it not be half bad is a miracle in and of itself. A typical experience, you walk past the always tempting desert display as you're escorted to your adorable booth. Get handed a gigantic menu that has everything a diner could ever possibly have, plus some greek specialties. I typically order the steak and eggs or the meatlover's omelette. The hashbrowns are stupendous, and the toast is fresh baked from the bakery. After that, you convince yourself that you are not in fact stuffed from their generous portions, but that you actually now require dessert. The pies are always good, but my personal favorite are the rum balls and the strawberry cheesecake. Only warning, if you're in a hurry at night, bring cash. read more

It has been a long time since we tried Amphora Diner and I would say that our visit was good. We ordered med delights, pizza burger, mixed grill and country steak w eggs. The country steak was the only one that we didnt like because it was too bland. The bread crumbs didnt have any taste and the steak. I've been in the area for a few weeks on business travel and I have been thankful to find Amphora due to my odd hours. What really surprised me was the quality of the food and baked goods. A lot of diners these days just use non-dairy (Coolwhip) and shortening for their pies, but I was pleased to find the pies and cakes here were much better than that. If you were to compare the food very broadly then sure it is decent, but when you compare it to most 24/7 options then it is 5 stars. This obviously doesn't apply to NYC and such places who have amazing diners everywhere, but that isn't a fair comparison, those places get a relatively huge volume of people, where Amphora seems they could use some more business in the late hours. Very Good Food & Service; Huge Choice; Kitchen more Consistent. We're long term patrons who go through spurts of dining here 2-3 times a week to not at all - we average once a week overall. We've had our great & not so great experiences here over the years. Our biggest complaints have been 1) the inconsistency of the kitchen between lunch & dinner. Lunch was always better especially if you're a salmon nut like I am; and 2) bar service when even their cocktail specials were slow to arrive & inconsistent in quality. I'm happy to say the last 3 times we've gone (last week in August), we found the meals (& salmon) perfectly prepared & consistent between lunch & dinner. The cocktail special arrived promptly & was delicious. The bathrooms were clean & in good repair. The staff was friendly, available & prompt. I ordered the steak and eggs today, came out just right, the whole wheat toasts were pretty delicious too lol. The options on the menu have been reduced, but even their limited menu offers numerous options well beyond other restaurants.
