My husband and I had both our ceremony and reception at Court in the Square in September 2013. Overall we were very satisfied with how the event went, and were told by our guests that the space was beautiful, the food was delicious, and the service was pleasant. Here's our take on the entire experience working with CITS, from start to finish.
The space deposit is $2,000 which was on the lower end of all the venues we considered. We booked our date about 10 months in advance. We fell in love with its old world charm and quirky location in Pioneer Square. I was hesitant to go with CITS based on some of the other reviews I had read about the planning process, but our desired wedding date and budget made CITS one of the best options for us. We had 140 guests (invited 180) and it felt like we were just about at maximum capacity. If you're having more than that, it may be doable but will feel a bit tight, particularly between tables.
Throughout the entire planning process - until the last week before our wedding - the catering manager, Bob, was extremely difficult to get a hold of. Emails and phone calls went unanswered for weeks, but once we set up meetings, he was easy to work with in person and quite helpful. He offered to make suggestions for rental companies, florists, and other vendors. He was open and honest about their capacity to do certain things we requested, but always seemed to talk me out of things that seemed difficult or not typical of how they do this (for example, having passed wine during cocktail hour). At the end of the day, his team can do anything you want if you have a clear vision.
About 3 months before our wedding, Bob was nowhere to be found. We heard nothing from him for 2 months despite our many phone calls and emails. There ended up being extenuating circumstances that caused his unavailability but I was disappointed with the lack of delegation to another staff member. It took a stern email to finally get a meeting set up with one his is colleagues, Jackie, who was also our day-of coordinator (she's fantastic by the way). We completely understood the situation but felt it was a bit unprofessional to go so long without hearing a word. We met with Jackie 2 weeks before the wedding to iron out the details and finalize the menu (this was the best and most productive meeting during the whole process). We didn't sign a food contract until the week OF the wedding, and paid our 30 day catering deposit 2 days before. This certainly stressed me out given my type-A, organized personality but if you're a more laid back, easy going person you may not find this sort of thing frustrating.
The day of the wedding, everyone at the venue was fantastic. We had a group of friends setting up our decorations and from what they said, the staff was willing to help with anything. One caveat is that anything the staff does, you'll get charged for it. For example, if we had had the CITS staff hang our lights, we would have been charged $50. Have people on your end do those type of things to avoid getting charged.
At the end of the night, Bob sent us off with a box of all the goodies we didn't get to try (appetizers, desserts, and many items from our buffet). It was a nice treat to take back with us to our hotel.
One note about the bar, if you serve alcohol perhaps write it in your contract to not serve doubles. We reached our bar limit before dinner was even served due in large part, I believe, to the drinks being so strong (many guests said almost undrinkable) so we were going through liquor bottles rather quickly. Looking back, I would have only served wine and beer strictly from a cost perspective. We ended up raising our bar tab by $2,000 just so our guests wouldn't have to pay. This may be more of a reflection on our guests than the venue, but I believe making the drinks so strong played a part in how quickly we reached our limit.
If you go with CITS for your wedding, my advice is to approach the planning process knowing that you will always have questions, things will NOT be crystal clear when it comes to menu, price and timeline, and you will not know your final total until after your event has happened (it's been 2 months and we're still waiting for the final bill). Bob does provide a variety of options to fit within your budget. Go into any meeting with Bob with a clear vision of what you want and they can make it happen, but don't expect it to be an easy process. I certainly don't regret having my wedding here, and everything went really smoothly that day. You won't be disappointed if you choose Court in the Square for your wedding. read more
