Oh my God - I cannot believe that I forgot to Yelp this the moment I got home! Pardonez-moi.
I was invited by a college friend of my mom's (they went to Stanford, aka the school that rejected me) to see the afternoon program (about a charity) and have lunch. Let me just put it out there right now that I LOVED it, with a capital L. It is like going back in time. It was a wonderful escape from my little mundane life, and I just gobbled up every old-fashioned upper crust nuance. All the women are addressed by Mrs. So-and-so, like it's 1953, and the iced tea is very fancy and I loved it loved it loved it. As liberal and progressive as I try to be, there was just something in the nostalgia of it all that I soaked up like a sponge.
And you know what was great? Seeing all these older women who'd taken/were taking good care of themselves, wearing stylish but not Grandma clothing, doing something social for a laugh. We're all going to be there some day and it gave me faith that I'll be able to handle it. Will I be able to afford a membership at the Sunset Club - certainly not, but wherever I'll be I hope to do it with the style of the ladies I met this day. read more
