My husband and I have been to Amel's half a dozen times now, as we live nearby. I will note that we tend to order seafood dishes rather than specifically Mediterranean food. We've found the food to be carefully and consistently prepared. In our experience, the service has been always attentive and personable. The ambiance definitely has a comfortable, old-world feel, with cozy booths and wall sconce lighting. There's a friendly, home-y feeling in the dining room -- and the bar section out front has more of the same. In a famously transient industry, it's clear that this restaurant has been around for a good long while. That kind of history doesn't just happen. The fact that they have a huge neon shish kabab sign out front lets you know they're planning on sticking around, too. Tried this restaurant for the first time on the recommendation of a friend. As many pointed out, the decor is a bit dated, but the place is clean. Our server, Annie, was great. All of the food was delicious . We had artichokes stuffed with goat cheese, French onion soup, lamb shank, the gyro platter, and crab stuffed mushrooms. Went to this place with a friend. Great food and good times. We sat at the bar and it was decorated festively for the holidays I enjoyed the cute decor. The bar tender was super friendly. I tried a chicken dish and it was super yummy. Really cheesy with mushrooms and tomatoes the rice was super buttery and really tasty as well. My friend got the Scallops and he said that they were really good too. This place is just all around delicious. The only bad part to this restaurant is the parking. It's terrible!! Good Mike is an excellent host, bartender and company. Today's app was the Scallops Wrapped in Bacon It originally came in a skewer with a few more, but I was sharing and it was delicious. The presentation was much better than this picture, but it didn't make it very long after the balsamic drizzle and garnish. Next was a seafood sampler; jumbo shrimp, crab meat, and salad... Our meals varied from the carpet ride dinner menu, to the lamb, I had the gyro platter and she crab soup and Moroccan soup and French onion soup. Salads are amazing too. I prefer salty over sweet, and this hit the spot, the onions were decent sized pieces as opposed to thinner slices, and it added to the heartiness of the soup. The lamb Jazmine was flavorful and tender. And the pasta my wife had was fresh tasting , the Mediterranean angel-added chicken for protein and switched to penne, the sauce was a little soupy, but very tasty. If I am looking for Mediterranean food in the South Hills, this is my first stop. My whole family agrees. If I'm really hungry I will get the Aladdin's pasta with spinach, feta and pine nuts; it's a delicious vegetarian meal and enough for two meals. If I'm with a group I might get the Mezze platter with a selection of Mediterranean apps. But what I most often do here is stop by to grab a couple of their classic tossed salads, which are a little elevated with beets and chickpeas, and their hummus, which for my money is the best in the city (and as a lifelong vegetarian I've tried a lot). That's just a perfect meal for a couple people; they also give you an abundance of Pitaland bread to go with it. They have a lovely, cozy indoor space and if the weather is nice the outdoor patio is a beautiful spot to enjoy a sangria and feel like you're somewhere other than McNeilly Rd. entirely. The lady advised they would still be very busy, but made reservations for us. We were seated immediately upon arriving, but they were still packed! We arrived around 6pm on a Friday and it was packed. We entered the front door and stood for a few minutes before a waiter asked us if he could help us. We asked if we could sit outside and he said we needed to see the hostess who was in another room around the corner. The room we walked into from the front door had a few tables along the front wall and then a bar. As we walked around the corner to the hostess, we see another bar and a larger seating area. There's also another door on the side that enters into an alley and a back door. Very confusing setup. So we ask for a table and are told it would be 30 minutes. We decide to wait. It ended up being about 10 minutes before we got seated. Service was very good. Our drinks were always full. We ordered hummus, chicken kebabs with fattoush salad. The rice pilaf was so buttery and tasty. The chicken was a little dry, but they serve it with a lemon soy sauce that helps. It's more soy than lemon, but still good. The vegetables on the kebab were a little too charred for my tastes, but they also served it with broccoli and green beans which were very good. Went there on a Saturday night around 6:30 and it seemed very busy. This was my groups first time there so we were unsure what to do when we walked it. You walk into the bar area which was jammed pack with no were to walk. We stood there until someone greeted us and asked what we needed. We then got sat in the bar area which I love the vibe of. We ordered some drinks and the spinach feta pastry appetizer which was amazing. Everyone loved the food they got. I got the filet kebab which I loved. Amel's is a hidden gem in Brookline. They have a vast menu of amazing Mediterranean food including a great grill with a number of beef, chicken and lamb items to choose from. I highly recommend getting their homemade Hummus with ground lamb and pomegranate sauce. It's the best I've ever had. I also recommend sitting at the bar. I absolutely love Amel's!!! The food is so good. There is nothing on this menu I have not enjoyed, but my current favorite entree is the Chicken Taboo but w Baba Ganouj instead of hummus. The Baba is actually kind of sweet; its not like any other I have had before and I love it. I strongly recommend making reservations - in fact if you walk in the first thing they'll ask is if you have a reservation, not "hi," or how are you! I am giving 4 stars bc #1 the parking lot is awful, and #2 the interior is very dated and needs deep cleaned. There are very few things I miss about living in the South Hills. However, Amel's is one of them. I first started going to Amel's in my early 20s with my friends. It would be a treat place for a group of us on the weekend. We would try to eat here once a month. I was back recently when in the area and was happy to find that everything is as perfect as it has ever been. Amel's famous weekend brunch is really something not to be missed. There are so many delicious choices. Fried Feta in Filo Pastry, people!! It is mind-boggling how delicious it is. It's so good I swear my vertigo kicks in with every savory bite that hits my mouth. Full disclosure! Driving by Amel's it would be easy to confuse this place as a more "dive bar" type establishment (maybe it's the neon genie) HOWEVER, this is one of the best restaurants around. I am so fortunate to have found this place, and to have had such a great experience. From the moment that I called Amel's to make a reservation, the hostess was the most wonderful person. She was so friendly, and accommodating. Ok, so I walk through the door expecting to see red leather booths, oh no! Maroon Velvet walls. This place's decor is outstanding, so beautiful, so funky. I loved everything about it. Our reservation was later, but somehow.. even though the place was PACKED on a Saturday night, we were seated almost right away (we just expected to grab some wine at the bar) The hostess, again.. came through and continued to do so throughout the night. She was so friendly, and just buzzed around talking to everyone and making sure everyone was having an enjoyable evening. The menu selection is HUGE, with a ton of vegetarian options. I however got the salmon, which I have to be honest about.. I was not a fan! It was very, very, fishy and salmon is hands down my favorite fish. I was not in favor of how it was prepared (I'm assuming broiled) didn't have much flavor to be honest. However, with the service, the ambiance, and the rest of our food and drinks, I hands down give Amel's a 5 star review. The rest of our food was great, the waitress accommodated our needs by asking if we wanted our appetizer with or without meat. So good. Everything I had was excellent - only gave 4 stars instead of 5 because my husband said although his filet mignone was a good cut and cooked well, it easily not seasoned. I think to summarize Amel's would be easy 5 Star Ambiance, 5 Star Service, 5 Star Appetizers, 2 star entree's. Amel's main courses just do not deliver it is like the bigger meals can't hang to the appetizers. Amel's I will now follow the Applebees rules which is simple only order Appetizers!! their appetizers are literal mouthwatering cuisine cultivating incredible flavor blasting adventures. Like literally such good appetizers. But then we get to the entrees and i got the lamb burger everyone was ordering it so I ordered it. And it was just dry and lacked flavor at the end of the day and maybe this was user error but I kind of wish i just ordered more appetizers. Me Lady's Mom got the lamb gyro and the same review just bland and dry needed a sauce she gave her entree a 2.5 stars even! so it was not just me. Amel's is a fantastic South hills classic. I've been here twice so far, the first time being so impressive that I decided to bring my family here for my birthday dinner. Well let me just say one of the best birthday dinners I ever had, and my family thoroughly enjoyed everything that was on the table. We started with 3 orders of grape leaves (they are THAT good- and my nana makes these herself and I would say they are almost as good), an order of hummus and tabouli. Appetizers: winning!!!!! The family loved it. Next for entrees we got an assortment of kabobs, mine was the kabob sampler that came with grape leaves and eggplant with lamb and marinara on top. All of our meals came with the Amel's salad that was truly special with the lemon and mint dressing. This is a new favorite spot and I am so pleased with my dining experience here tonight! We were told the kitchen was slammed and our food would take a while, but that also came out quickly! We split the mezze platter, fried feta in filo pastry, fried zucchini strips, and gyro platter. Everything was fantastic. Mezze platter: hummus, baba, tabbulee, onion, artichokes w/tahini, stuffed grape leaves, pita. Everything on this platter was good. I especially loved the hummus, onion, and artichokes. Fried feta in filo pastry: olives, horseradish dip. Super tasty. The filo pastry had such a nice texture to it. The disappointment was SO real on this one that I don't even know where to start. First off, I thought this was a middle eastern restaurant, well kind off but not really. We came on a Saturday night around 6ish for dinner and they asked for reservations which we didn't have. They sat us in the corner by the back door which pissed me off because we had an infant and the high chair was in the way of the door which was constantly being used. It was annoying because there was another table on the other side which would have prevented this especially during covid. The worst part is the food. We ordered a steak and the mixed kabobs which came out probably 45 mins after we ordered as they slowly bring you pita bread and salad. I did not like my tabbouleh salad, I had this in other places and it was my favorite but not here. A $35 steak was so disappointing, you're better off at Texas Roadhouse. It had no flavor, a good steak should not need sauce but we had to drench this one in A1 sauce. The kabobs were a joke, you get one bite of each meat for $28. The only one that had flavor was the shrimp. I really wanted to like this place but this is the worst $80 that I've spent at any restaurant. For first timers, you have to walk through the bar to get to the dining area. There is also additional parking in the back as well as an entrance and outdoor sitting. read more
