Amazing Wok next to Kroger on Henderson Rd used to be a largely Americanized Chinese takeout place... or so I've heard from other people who have lived around there for decades. They're now under new ownership however and it now appears to be a super authentic Chinese restaurant. I shop at the Kroger next door pretty regularly and I always see Chinese college students hanging out there in groups, so it must be authentic? It looks like they have hot pots built into the tables now too? They still offer takeout, but it's definitely a lot more than a takeout restaurant now. I dropped by last weekend to grab lunch to go. I ordered their kung pao chicken and it was delicious! Grabbing food here comes with a bunch of challenges though. First of all, no one who works here speaks English fluently. So unless you're fluent in Mandarin (I'm not), that'll be a challenge. Second, I'm not sure if their website is updated or if it still reflects what was being served under the old ownership. Either way, their online menu and their menu in the store are completely different. And even within the store, there seems to be a different menu for Americanized Chinese food and authentic Chinese food. And their Chinese menu has some amusing translation issues. I have no idea what "Weird-flavored dry-pot duck" is!! Third, you'll need to have an adventurous dining mind because their menu has items like bullfrog and pork intestine. Their food is delicious... you'll just need a bit of courage to brave the language barrier and the unfamiliar menu! Hopefully they can update their website to make it easier to order online... that would solve a lot of the confusion for people who grew up in Ohio like me! read more

Someone should tell her she's not doing her parents any favors by being so rude and unhelpful that people just walk out. What a shame cuz they looked like they were working hard. I've been coming here for years now and it never disappoints. The food is very delicious and I don't think you're gonna find anything like it anywhere else in Columbus. The owner (who I do not think has changed) has always been great and while the menu seems to have changed slightly to be more Hunan oriented with a new chef in the last year, it's still so damn good! New does not mean bad, contrary to some other reviews! Chef is also super nice (and a great cook), just like the previous one, and the vibes are always fantastic. (Edited to clarify my comments regarding the two vastly different ordering systems, and any reason for the addition of Americanized food as options since my previous visit are entirely conjecture on my part and reflect no actual firsthand information.) Met a friend for a birthday lunch at 1:15pm on a Friday. The neon open sign is turned off, as it was the last time, but the doors are unlocked. No other customers, but I was greeted non-verbally and provided with an extensive paper menu and a red solo cup of water as I waited in a booth by the window for my friend. They seemed to have updated the menu to include some standard Chinese-American take out dishes since we were here last, but the major of the menu is presumably authentic, meaning interesting things I've never heard of. When my friend arrived, she also was given a paper menu and a small acrylic sign with a QR code and a table number was brought to our attention. Scanning it links you to a very different menu than the one online, with many photos of the traditional offerings. The language barrier is neatly skirted this way, as orders are placed by clicking on the image. We had a braised pork dish with a slightly sticky, almost bbq-like coating on maybe bony pieces that might have been vertabrae? Two empty plates and two bowls of sticky rice came with, and the two bottles of differing soy sauce that were far better than the Kikkoman printing led us to expect were pointed out, and packets from a dish on the table that contained plastic gloves for eating them without utensils. (Disposable chopsticks for the rice. ) Second course was "sweet potatoes with sugar" that turned out to be a heaping pile of chunks of white sweet potatoes, crispy outside and fluffy inside, dangerously hot right out of a fryer and covered with golden molten sugar that hardened and formed threads of spun sugar in places. We were given metal forks and a shallow dish of plain water was placed between us beside the platter. Gestures informed us that we were to dip the potato chunks into the water before eating. This seemed a safety precaution to cool them just enough to avoid 3rd degree burns from the sugar coating and harden it. Interesting to eat, and delicious, although we ate too slowly and were unable to pry the last few chunks from the rock like hardened pool of sugar. Last course was one we had before and loved, a plate of 15 smallish steamed dumplings filled with ground lamb and grated carrot and a small dish for our preferred soy sauce for dipping (the darker, non-vinegary one). Other than bringing the courses and the brief gestures on how to eat the food, there was no other interaction with staff during the meal. While we may have been given space because we both arrived masked due to the air quality, I believe this is typical. Everything we needed was on the table. The lavish lunch ended up being about $55, and my card was swiped and totaled with no tip despite suggested amounts on the receipt. Pricey for the apparent hole in the wall location, but a bargain for the food and experience. If I've enticed you with my description, do not attempt to order online from the menu on their website. It seems to be an attempt to generate income by satisfying what they think Americans expect from a "Chinese takeout and delivery joint" I doubt they do it well. Unless you are fluent enough to order properly on the phone, go there, scan the QR code, place your order even if you want carryout. But you'll miss out on the experience if you don't dine in. This is the only indoor restaurant where I've removed my mask to dine in years, as we ordered carry out here last time. But we anticipated an empty dining room for a late lunch and it was well worth the risk. read more

I need to start by saying that their current staff only speaks Chinese. I didn't realize this when I walked in and a customer had to help translate for me. Aside from that, this was some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. The food was cooked with so much care and love, and everything was so well seasoned and had so much flavor, it was incredible. This review is based on the new management. Very authentic Chinese food (if you look at their separate menu, which is only in Chinese unfortunately). The place doesn't look the greatest at first glance, and the service was a little slow because of how busy it got, and you get served water in red solo cups but the food is good. You can also order ahead even for dining in if you tell the owner. Highly recommend their lamb skewers. They were seasoned very well. The price was pretty reasonable at $2 each. Overall the items were flavorful if not just a tad bit salty. Would definitely still go back for skewers though! read more

Amazing Wok has nothing amazing about it. I tried it several times and was never impressed. This is a fairly standard counter service Chinese restaurant with some plastic tables. It has no ambiance to speak of. The carryout is recommended and you get some off your bill. I had the Szechuan tofu on the most recent visit. It was nothing special and it cost about $6. They had some of the typical Chinese vegetables but this time it was mostly broccoli. It was also not spicy like it said on the menu. The sauce was weak and it barely added anything to it. It still is cheap though at lunch so it's not as bad as it could be. The restaurant also never uses MSG so that's a good thing. It's not a nice place for dining in. The interior is so humble and needs an update. It's also cash only can you believe it. They need to get with the times and modernize if they want to be successful. I wanted to like this more but they are not consistent enough at Amazing Wok. It has good prices especially at lunch. The only good thing about it, but it needs more to make me want to go there. read more

Stopped in and was looking for some Hunan chicken to go . I waited almost 10 minutes and as I was waiting there I felt Like there was going to be a language barrier and there was. I had some questions and the chef couldn't understand so a nice woman sitting at restaurant translated for me. The chicken was not what I was expecting it was more like general tso chicken. It was my first time coming here after they changed owners. It's still family-owned. The new owners are from Hong Kong. They have very authentic Cantonese food! You need to ask for Chinese menu! My friends and I ordered Stir-Fry Beef with egg on Rice, Preserved egg with Pork Congee, Wonton Soup and Salted Fillet with Jalapeño. Every dish was tasty! Pretty good. They have a tofu dish with century egg. I liked it with a bit of chili oil on top. Creaminess of the egg went well with the softness of tofu. They have really good lamb skewers. It was incredibly tender and well seasoned. Fell apart in my mouth. They have a nice chive pancake. Really crispy. Good flavor. They have this soup as well with sour greens, fish and jalepenos. Stumbled upon this authentic Cantonese restaurant yesterday. Because it was 端午节(a traditional holiday that Chinese people eat savory rice or dessert rice wrapped in bamboo leaves call Zhang 粽), so I asked if they have it, and they had both kinds. China transplants or NYC/ other large city transplants are in luck! Their 粽 tasted exactly like how my grandmother used to make them ( nothing extra, nothing missing - and super fresh). Side note about how great Columbus is - you can get authentic food as long as you are keeping an eye out for them! I think it makes sense we should call in advance to preorder, just to make sure they have what you are looking for. This is an underappreciated gem in town. If you look closely at the reviews and rating, you will find it very polarized. I wasn't able to figure out why until I found out the owners and servers have some language barriers and the have a hidden Chinese menu without English translation. That was their secret weapon. I feel sorry that the language barrier makes it hard for some customers to enjoy the most authentic, delicious, and amazing Chinese food in town (at least I would argue it is). The experience would be significantly enhanced if you have someone who understands Chinese goes with you. I would also highly recommend the "Congee with preserved egg and lean meat" （皮蛋瘦肉粥）. I am not sure if it is on the english menu but almost all of my friends have crazily fell into with it after I took them to the resteraunt. read more

I first enjoyed this delightful fare when I moved here in 1996 and lived in UA providing research to the NASA foundation at OSU. Stumbling into this hidden gem was a wonderful serendipity of strip mall classic Chinese food ! I just visited again after a long stretch of not and gosh if this isn't the best pork fried rice in this city of Columbus, oh! I got the Spicey and am glad I did! Wtf is wrong with your business that you want to close over an hour before your posted closing time. You're destroying your business and your reputation. My 4-star rating is a tad generous, but I just can't deny Amazing Wok. It's the most comfortingest of comfort Americanized Chinese food for me. I grew up near here, so this is the Chinese food by which I compare all other Chinese food. To me, everything is either better or worse than Amazing Wok. Nostalgia aside, Amazing Wok does a good job with fresh ingredients. The wonton soup is a little bit devoid of veggies, but it's still my standard order. The sweet-and-sour chicken is served dry, with the sauce on the side. I love this aspect, as you don't run the risk of the S&S chicken being completely sticky sweet. The fried chicken is light and puffy... mmmm. The interior hasn't been updated since we started coming in the early 1990's, if ever. It could use a facelift, that's for sure. So... carryout it is. Also, they are cash only-- which seems like an unnecessary inconvenience, but whatevs. read more

I use to go to Amazing Wok a few years ago, was consistent. I ordered on Christmas day General Tso's chicken to be picked up at 1230pm, and ordered at a little after 11am. What I got was cold, stale, flour based rolled balls of chicken and flour fried in a wok. My order was order was easily sitting on front desk for over an hour. I wish I took pics. Literally the entire box was cold, stale and stuck to the styrofoam. I turned the food upside down and it stuck to the styrofoam. Few little brown rice came out, but get the point. Absolute crap food. Fried rice was colored and no consistency. Some white rice, some extra dark rice, mixed in with medium brown colored rice. I never complain, as example as this was only restaurant review I logged in for. This place was the worst meal I ever had period. Had to throw 90% of it away. I pulled up to the restaurant and there were 6 patrons smoking directly outside the door. I waited about 5 minutes until they went back inside. I had ordered online through their website and when I got there at the time I was quoted, my food hadn't been started yet. I waited patiently for an additional 24 minutes. The item that most every table seemed to be enjoying (meat skewers), I couldn't find on the English menu-which had a good sized selection. When I left, a new group of smokers was standing guard outside. When I got my food and brought it home for my family's dinner it was packaged very well and still plenty warm. We ordered hot and sour soup, Kung pao chicken, garlic beef, shrimp lo mein, and General tso's chicken. The beef dish tasted too heavily of cinnamon (even though that was not listed as an ingredient) and was, after a few bites, inedible. The kung pao chicken had little flavor even though it was listed as a spicy dish. The peanuts tasted raw (as in not even roasted) and the consistency of the sauce was viscous. The general tso's was the most edible of all and still only rated a 4 out of 10 by only one member of the family. The smell of the soup was pungent and the consistency was almost gelatinous. Even the shrimp lo mein missed the mark with only 3 shrimp in a full order. So disappointing because we are always on the look out for new places to eat and this place was packed. I'd like to think we hit a bad night or something but we won't be back. $50 (after carry out tip) down the drain and we're back to frozen pizzas. read more

Used to eat here every week until it was sold. Just tried it for the third time after being disappointed the the last two times. It was Christmas and nothing else was open. The food was absolutely horrendous. It's like they purposely hated me. the hot & sour soup was recycled every day for the last two week. It smelt so bad it stuck up my house for 1 full day. Portion size seems to be smaller than prior ownership. I ate in. Soup was served with meal. Food was hot but got cold as I had my soup. I served with a half of glass of water and they never refilled. Great Food!! The original owners retired a short while back and the new owners took over about a month ago. The new owners, a family, served Clintonville for 5 years of great food and had their restaurant on High Street (Canton City) just south of Henderson Rd. They had great food their and after I stopped the other day at their new location, I found that their chef was carrying on their same great tasting food tradition at their new venue Amazing Wok. I think you will find their restaurant hospitable, their food delicious, and their prices reasonable! Try their great soups as well, especially the hot and sour soup. Small restaurant completely devoid of ambiance, Amazing Wok offers your typical Chinese fare, freshly prepared and promptly served. AW's hot and sour soup always leaves me wanting for more, as did its char siu (BBQ pork) before the appearance of the new kid on the block known as Sunrise Market. Unlike other fast food places, AW's dishes are not plagued with MSG, so you don't have to worry about the sucka sending your brain cells to overdrive. Very amicable owners. Fair prices for the behemoth portion sizes. Seriously consider the carryout option though! read more
