I made an appointment here after reading all the Yelp reviews. It took weeks to get an appointment, however I patiently waited as it seemed from Yelp that Amanda was the best. I'm pretty petite so I need to get things altered often, and I was excited to potentially find a great place in the neighborhood. I received a confirmation email right away which asked that I respond to confirm. I replied and asked for an estimate to which I never received a response. Upon arriving to my appointment, I was greeted by Tina Marie. She was very friendly and told me I could go ahead and start trying on my items. When I exited the dressing room, there was a woman sitting there scowling -- it was Amanda. I didn't get so much as a smile or hello, I immediately felt completely unwelcome. While doing try ons, I tried making polite conversation to break the ice and she was not having it. I'm not sure what her deal was, but I got the impression she didn't want to be working with me for some reason. She commented that it wouldn't be worth it to alter the dress the way I wanted (shorten the straps) since it would probably cost more than the dress. I appreciate the honesty and cost benefit analysis, however, have some tact. It came across very backhanded and the dress had cost $150, so not exactly inexpensive. When trying on jeans, I asked about the length and her opinion on if it was ok to which she replied it didn't matter to her, she wasn't going to be wearing them. I found her commentary very snide, she is supposed to be a professional and I was asking for her professional opinion on the alteration length. The grand total to shorten two pairs of jeans and shorten straps on a dress: $48, to be paid upon pickup. A bit steep and I would have appreciated knowing in advance, hence my email request for an estimate that went unanswered. Also, cash only for $75 and under.
A little less than a week later I got a call from Tina Marie that my items were ready and I'd need to schedule a try on appointment. The times that she gave me were inconvenient (during work hours) and one week plus away. I told her I would just pick them up and not do a try on, which she said was fine. Although I didn't get a try on appointment, it did take a phone call to coordinate a time for pick up. Ultimately I was not able to go and my husband stopped by around the given timeframe I had told Tina Marie I'd be by to pick up. It took a while for him to get in (this isn't a store front, you have to call when you're there, etc) and he gave her $50 for the $48 total bill. She didn't have change. How can you require cash payment but then you don't even have change? I think he was pretty frustrated by that fact, as I would have been too. They ultimately agreed to an amount a little less than $48 because of the change issue. He brought my items home and I was shocked -- every single item had an issue. One pair of jeans had excess material folded and sewn inside, creating a bulky look. The other pair of jeans were still way too long, by at least an inch. The dress strap had been sewn back incompletely on one side, looking as if it is pulling apart and will come undone. I immediately emailed Amanda telling her of the issues, I also mentioned that I felt very unwelcome in her studio and would have appreciated a response to my estimate email request. She curtly replied that she would refund in full to my Paypal account. She did not apologize for the way she made me feel in her place of business, the lack of communication or the poor quality of her work. She also made a comment that seemed to imply I was not telling the truth about the dress or that I had somehow damaged it myself over the course of a couple hours. I would have preferred that she offer to correct the issues as opposed to refunding me, as I now still have three items that need to be properly altered. As annoying as that is, the silver lining here is that I never have to step foot in this place again. read more
